Right now you can shift click anyone in view to instantly see everything they have, and with the 360 degrees view spacemen has its really pretty above average.

i have two main suggestions.

Firstly, hide some items from a normal observation, small items need you to aim at the hands and examine to see them, tiny items would be the same but 1 tile away.

Small items would give "He is holding something in his hand" while tiny items give nothing.

IDs should also apply, you would need to get up close to check someone's ID, instead of telling what job someone has 15 meters away, sunglasses should also hide your face unless observed aiming at the head 2 tiles away.

Aiming at the upperbody allows you to see the general idea of what someone is wearing, but you would have to aim at body parts to check particular items like toolbelts.

E.g:

Redshirt McHarambaton eyes Someone.

This is Someone!
He is wearing a radio headset
he is wearing some mask
he is wearing a grey jumpsuit
he is wearing some gloves
he is wearing some belt
he is wearing some shoes

Redshirt McHarambaton gives someone's face a good look.

You know this guy! Its Rob Oster, you remember he works as an assistant

You stare at Rob Oster!

Redshirt McHarambaton stares at Rob Oster's hands.

Its Seems Rob Oster is wearing some insulated gloves!

The second part of the suggestion can be seen in the example, unless you're covering your eyes, people can tell you're looking at them.

If possible, implanting an identifying system would be great, not everyone should know the 50 or so interchangable crew working with them, it would also stop the meta with communication using antags, and "HELP MAINT" will be a lot more useless.

Lifeweb does this to a degree. Examining anything gives a visual indicator that the character is looking at something (whether person, mob, item or the floor), such as:

Urist McDude looks at Grinder Mag.

Easy to execute.

I like the idea of hiding small items, details, etcetera.

However, memory is a bitch to code. Or rather, it's very simple, but the amount of storage space it'll take is amazing. My suggestion is, if someone is wearing something that'll obscure the face properly (not sunglasses, but an actual mask, etcetera), then you need to take the time to look at an ID for a name. Otherwise, I think, the game would be very awkward to play.

Someone's been playing too much lifeweb.

Some parts of this idea are interesting, but aiming at specific bodyparts is -really- fiddly and not at all easy or intuitive like in real life. Examining someone would take forever if you had to keep reselecting specific areas, and i can't honestly think of any way to make that process better

Could have examine start at the area you're 'aiming at', then slowly begin to examine the rest of them on a timer. Think of the timer for stripping as an example, or the way you examine someone with grab + help intent.
