Ziva Ta'kim - Heart condition/damage verb

BYOND Key: SierraKomodo

Character name: Ziva Ta'kim

Item name: Technically not an 'item', but an RP based verb that will cause a small amount of heart damage per use

Why is your character carrying said item to work? Ziva has a genetic heart defect that runs in her family on her mother's side, which has been slowly degrading her heart as she grows up. As a result, high-stress or high-excitement situations tend to cause her to have heart problems. Up til now I've just been RPing out these effects, with medbay typically completely ignoring me and saying there's absolutely nothing wrong because there's nothing wrong mechanically and refusing to cooperate with an RP situation. She has had a surgical procedure that repaired some of the damage to her heart, but the operation to fully cure the disease is far too expensive (And before anyone says anything about cloning, consider the fact a /genetic/ issue would be copied by cloning).

Item function(s): Verb causes ~5 damage to the heart per use. I've thought of a couple ways this could be implemented, though I'm not certain how limitations of byond/ss13 code would effect this:

1: A verb created that is only usable by my ckey when playing a character named Ziva Ta'kim

2: An implanter that I'm given at round start like any other custom item that, when implanted, gives access to that particular verb. Since implants show up on medbay scans, it can be labelled as something non-assuming like 'Heart Monitor,' which would make since given her condition.

Item description: N/A

Item appearance: N/A

How will you use this to better interact with crew and/or stimulate RP? As high-stress and high-excitement situations cause issues for Ziva as her heart struggles to keep up, this will provide an extra mechanical layer to how these situations are played out. Specifically, this will provide something for medbay to actually work on mechanics wise instead of waving it off as 'Stop trying to RP things that dont exist'.

Additional comments: As a side note, I'm not going to spam this thing to kill/nearly kill me - I'd expect it to be something that's easily fixable with an injection of inaprovaline or paroxatine when she goes into medbay. The main reason I'm requesting this is for that interaction with medbay instead of it being sent to a crashing halt by players that don't want to cooperate with a purely-RP situation.

One could think, if people do not want to "cooperate with a purely-RP situation", they won't really care about "something that's easily fixable with an injection or inaprovaline" either. They will just give you that inaprovaline and tell you to "get the fuck out of the medbay im busy many patients".

Plus, that's a snowflake custom item. Just roleplaying it out without any mechanics but with people who actually do care will be optimal, I guess. Huh.

Not mentioning the fact that it's either going to be used once in a round (why even bother, then) or done too frequently (where one could question why NT allows an almost-dying cat to still work on their station, remember that NT has tons of spare free cats).

I've ahelped for minor heart damage in relation to this in the past and admins have done so without any problems, and in those situations medbay /did/ go through the motions of checking on why Ziva has suffocation damage, asking about it, and treating it, as opposed to scanning her once, saying 'you're fine', then going back to the sensors console.

I've been told by admins that I've shown this thread to that I can just ahelp for this whenever it would make sense for Ziva's heart to start acting up, but setting up this custom verb/item/what-have-you would make things a bit easier, and let me handle these situations when there's no admins available.

If this is accepting to expand on a character, then sure. This could be interesting.

On a second note, I gotta point out a downside: Medical is very mechanic-based, and it's probably one of the most burnt-out professions. Unlike something with Robotics, repair-arpee needs to be done due to the actual lack of mechanics. Like when my IPC Ricochet had to get tinkered on for half the round by roboticist Ashley Paynther (sp?) because of an ingame bug. Medical doesn't have the luxury of being arpee-based. Sierra can be trustworthy enough to not 'abuse' this and drag all of medical into forced arpee with Ziva. I think that's the real concern after all.

That's also why I'm suggesting only about 5 points of damage per use. I certainly don't plan on spamming this, or using it all willy nilly for woe-is-me RP, but it /is/ a defective heart and something that should have some effect on RP with this particular character. For those doctors who don't want to actually RP with this? That's fine, an inaprovaline injection or w/e will set her right on her way, and it's far less awkward ICly and OOCly than walking in ,'Her hearts acting up' ,-scan- You're fine get out.

Questions.

Do you plan to have higher stress levels make it happen more?

Have you done a lot of thinking on the origins of the medical issue?

Purebred genetic havoc? Anything?

That was the plan for it, yes. Any activity that would result in increased stress, or increased heart rate in general, such as having to run around a lot, being scared shitless about something, getting shot by a taser/stunned by a baton (I can refrain from triggering it in this case if people get worried about the potential of abusing that to avoid security), etc etc.

Regarding the origins, I left it somewhat vague, but described as a rare Tajaran genetic disease that affects the heart and tends to be passed on from parent to child. Her mother passed away from heart failure due to the genetic defect.
