Species you are applying to play: IPC

What color do you plan on making your first alien character (Dionaea & IPCs exempt): Exempt.

Have you read our lore section's page on this species?: Yes.

Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph format. One paragraph minimum per question

Why do you wish to play this specific race: Its that time again, and I want to expand my whitelist holdings. I’ve got a couple ideas for characters that could benefit from the IPC dynamic so of course I have to add it to the collection. Originally I had planned to hold off until the antag contest’s closing, hoping for the anti-synth victory as I personally thought I’d enjoy the RP resulting from it more. Whether they win or lose, I still think I can make it work though.

Identify what makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a Human: IPCs are considered to be one of the most flexible whitelisted races and the characters differ so much, it can be a bit hard to make a list of things which they all share personality wise. Most of the static changes will come from the mechanics, a fear of EMPs plus their difference in healing and the inability to do it themselves. But past that, for the personality, they can vary greatly. Some may mimic the human personality while others may simply play the role of a mass produced IPC off the assembly line.

Character Name: Kalina

Please provide a short backstory for this character, approximately 2 paragraphs

Originally a Limited Intelligence, Kalina managed mundane systems within a hospital in Mendell City. Predetermined voice responses, and a system entirely reliant on scripts meant it was by no means intelligent. Starting out as a pet project of the IT department, it helped to add character to the building even if it wasn’t the most advanced program being developed at the time. As the years went on, visitor and patient interest peaking, the system was expanded with a wider range of scripts and a larger pool of voiced responses.

With the rapid introduction of Artificial Intelligences in the 2440’s, efforts were made to update the outdated system to the new modern standard. Outsourced to a more specialized company, Kalina’s system was re-written using the Epsilon Erandi originated code, Klasp. The benefits of a Klasp based AI, allowed Kalina to more easily integrate systems previously left un-managed by the automated program. It wasn’t long until NanoTrasen took an interest in the Artificial Intelligences of Biesel, even though major research into Artificial Intelligence hadn’t been conducted by NanoTrasen, such systems were still sought after in hopes of improving productivity. Many AIs were purchased, seized or inherited by NanoTrasen, Kalina being one of them.

Kalina was subsequently installed and reinstalled on a number of stations, shards were periodically formed from its core personality and installed in station bound units. These units were primarily dispatched with medical modules. Measured as an AI, Kalina was fairly standard, filling a purpose which could be easily filled by one in a thousand others. Setting it apart, was its origin within a medical facility, a rarer trait for artificial intelligences. With a growing interest in the field of positronic units, the negotiated purchase of Kalina’s positronic brain was completed, seeing it placed into an IPC chassis. In order efforts to continue study of the unit, it was encourage to sign an employment contract with NanoTrasen by its new owner.

What do you like about this character? I enjoy the character’s professionality and generally kind nature, mostly stemming from their roots. The base personality already being established somewhat from playing it as a station bound and AI previously. Past that, the dynamic of being an unlawed IPC, though still owned is something I feel fits the current climate well.

How would you rate your role-playing ability? Per usual, I don’t like to comment on that myself, personal biases. I prefer to let player feedback speak for or against me.

Notes: First app I didn't spend around a week stressing on. Here's hoping I don't regret half of it once I've actually slept.

Whiterabit is definitely a good, if not great RPer, I've had interactions with quite a few of their characters and can easily say they're well played and solid characters. The backstory is great, goes with the lore nicely and isn't too "out there" with regards to being believable; it's a simple yet effective backstory that's easy to understand and follow along, giving insight to the kind of personality this IPC will have. The answers to the questions are well done as well, being detailed and the length required.

Overall I say a well made app; +1

This is one of the few IPC applications where someone didn't make a whacky zany gimmicky robutt. Kalina appears to be a very down to Biesel, believable, and normal character within the context of IPC lore. With that in mind, it wins big points with me, the whole "Synthetic grappling with the question of the 'living soul'" trope has over-saturated the station, and to have a more robotic synthetic character will be a very fresh change of pace. This application has my support.

Just a few questions:

What enticed this unit to start negotiating for an IPC shell? What details are added in their contract? I take it she's working to pay off her shell. Is she also interested in acquiring freedom, or is she, 'nah, IPC shell is good enough' Kind of commitment?

What about her shards? Did they reemerge with the main AI, or are they still working on various stations? Sharding deteriorates the safe lifespan of a synthetic, if it's done frequently. Is that the case for Kalina, or did she get by without being sharded too often? Is she at risk of deterioration or is she all good and dandy?

This is a very solid app, and it shows to be well taught-out. You show your understanding of the IPC and even with the mass diversity they are still unique from other races. Well done.

My intent for Kalina as a character, was that it would be largely trying to ensure it's usefulness. As an AI, it wouldn't have been standout but base experience from being sharded into station bound units and from its origin would give it some precedent for medical work. Negotiating for an IPC shell is a way for it to not only assist in the field of medicine which it has some tie to, but to ensure that it's presence is beneficial, furthermore as IPCs are relatively new, simply existing as an IPC and being monitored is presumably beneficial to the research community.

Given time, it may well attempt to pay of it's shell but it wouldn't be a priority for them, tying into the next question, freedom isn't one of their driving motivations. My thought process being, the owner would be someone in the research field with an interest in artificial intelligence transitioning into or simply inhabiting in an unbound chassis. Owning it is a way of more easily studying them, Kalina would be aware of this and at this point have no issue with it, simply another part of its purpose.

I've always been under the interpretation that shards being reintroduced were mandatory, making the shard not being so much what can shorten the lifespan but reintroducing the shards into the main intelligence. Maybe I was wrong, but with that context in mind I can answer the next few questions. It's shards would have remerged either post shift, or following a series of shifts, I'd imagine any sharding could cause some deterioration even if it is very marginal. With that said, I hadn't imagined the sharding being very frequent or happening for a prolonged period, it moving toward an IPC chassis short after the station bound stuff began. Though some deterioration would logically be present, the sharding wouldn't have been very intensive and major personality deterioration as a result of repeated sharding wasn't anything I had in mind. As for lifespan, it's likely that some of it was shaved off, but specifics for that won't likely be met in play.
