Remove Assistants

Hm, yes I see now that assistants are needed.

They just need to be dealt with properly.

Do you also think this can be closed ?

Removing assistants alone will just lead to the greytiders joining visitor, and there are actually people trying to play decent assistants.

The idea of adding a bridge secretary/assistant would be worth its own suggestion thread imho.

(Altough heads of staff can already do that if they want to, so its also a bit redundant)

I hate to be that guy, but making bridge assistants and assigning assistants to their lesser roles is one of the bigger things that HoPs get to do imo.

Just gonna throw in my thoughts. Some of you may remember Bob Springston, the greyshirt extrodinare. He was my first character, and I kept him as an assistant, even as I made new characters who specialised. Because I liked the random rounds, changing jobs, getting to play with different characters each shift.

I have started this process again recently, with a new assistant. The difficulty in actually getting anything is a pain. When I join, I normally spend a large ammount of time walking randomly. Only one RD has actually repeatedly even spoken to me. Past that, my offers to help are ignored. I feel like the distrust would pass onto whatever new jobs you made. That said, a command assistant would awesome.

Command assistants can already be a thing with HoPs. I really don't think adding or removing anything is necessary at this point. We really just need to look at how people treat assistants poorly all the time and stop.

I think the problem of what assistants are mostly used for overshadows the fact that 3 or 4 players are trying to make them decent. Another example of this kind of problem is genetics. The genetics department was removed in the old map due to most people abusing it to do low-rp shenanigans despite a couple people working it 'HRP' style, which apparently means just doing proper paperwork, and from what I have heard from some staff, genetics will be removed again in the Aurora II. I think people should try looking at the assistant problem the same way.

For the argument that the blame will be just passed onto these new suggested positions, my argument is that the positions will carry a much bigger responsibility due to clearly being part of a certain department, and the superiors to those positions will be able to keep a tighter leash on them more than they do on Assistants. I know Assistants technically are part of the civilian department, but they are regarded as their own thing most of the time, resulting in people not managing them as much as they should. I think this is because assistants are at the bottom of the chain of command and the lack of interaction between the higher positions and assistants is somehow paradoxically because assistants have to take orders from anyone, and anyone can give orders to assistants, so it's better not to waste time trying to get most of them to do anything.

As for the issue that could emerge with visitors, if a wewladder decides to join in as a visitor and starts running around with tools and whatnot, they can be immediately questioned because they are not supposed to be carrying anything else other than what they came onboard with.

I am glad this thread generated as much of a discussion as it did, and I respect the arguments brought on. What I can say for my personal skepticism is that I cannot recall the last time I met a productive assistant that wasn't doing something engineering-related, which at that point they should just be in engineering.

Due to the fair amount of resistance this suggestion has met, I conclude the thread can be closed now. Hopefully it will be reconsidered later.

Thank you, @Arrow768
