[Resolved] Character Complaint: Ward Sagan

BYOND Key: Keinto

Game ID: Next round's ID: bRd-aYSw

Player Byond Key: ((Don't know))

Staff involved: Bigby Farkas, Ward Sagan

Reason for complaint: First of all, I need to clarify that I would have loved to deal with this ICly with an incident report of Neglect of Duty, but unfortunately it involve the death of a character that the player of Bigby Farkas decided not to keep canon. I have nothing against Ward Sagan or the player who plays him and I think he is relatively competent as a doctor. The only reason I report the issue in this subforum is because the rules don't allow incident reports on events that are not canon such as antag-related or deaths as it is this case.

Officer Bigby Farkas died dealing with a blob that spawned in Brig maintenance. He was later cloned by Ward Sagan with at least two other medical staff present at the time. Instead of delaying the cloning of Farkas while first treating the patients who were still alive to later properly sit down with him to inform him of his death, Sagan decided to do both simultaneously and later told Farkas to talk to him later while he stabilized other patients. Some times passes, and then this bizarre statement comes from Sagan in the common channel.

[Common] Ward Sagan says, "Hey, uh, sorry bigby, was busy getting dead."

[Common] Ward Sagan says, "If you have questions, PDA"

[Common] Bigby Farkas asks, "What?"

[Common] Ward Sagan says, "... me"

[Common] Bigby Farkas asks, "Wait, what?"

[Common] Arthur Greiss mutters, "Fucking brilliant."

Having realized Farkas was not told of his death before being released, I look for him in the medical lobby.

We begin speaking to Sagan and then this happens:

Bigby Farkas asks, "Did you say I died..?"

Ward Sagan says, "What? I said nothing like that."

Bigby Farkas says, "You said..busy bein' dead.. And that if I had questions..t' PDA you.. And I can't remember anythin'.. "

Ward Sagan says, "I was busy grabbing the deceased due to the blob was what i was refering to."

Bigby Farkas glances around the lobby..

Bigby Farkas says, "R-Right, yeah.."

Bigby Farkas nods.

Bigby Farkas says, "Yeah.."

We later go our separate ways due to a radiation storm and I meet Sagan once again in maintenance and begin asking about Farka's death because I was not sure whether he had really died or not. He replies with this:

Ward Sagan says, "As I said, patient confidentiality. Unless it's a security matter. You have access tot he morgue anyway if you're that interested. I was calling him back there to speak to him about it. Kunta is supposed to be fired so I was grabbing some patients to stabilize them and such while he recovered."

The rest of the round consisted of me trying to prosecute him after having looked at Farka's own body bag in the temporary morgue. I ask Farka's player whether he's keeping the death canon or not, to which he says he isn't. Then I proceed to write a character complaint instead of an incident report (which again, I would have loved to do ICly).

Did you attempt to adminhelp the issue at the time? If so, what was the known action taken by administration/moderation? (Yes or no, then an explanation for why not, if applicable.) No.

Approximate Date/Time: (The date and time of the incident. Date is more important but both are helpful) 30/10/17 8:00 PM UTC-08:00

Generally, Medical should not be cloning patients unless they are properly able to handle their recovery, from the physical and mental aspects of it. The player in question has a few incidents regarding medical play but considering their activity, those things have been addressed by themselves.

From a glance, it seems like the cloning was really rushed, with little thought towards the long term well being of the patient. I'll wait to hear from their side before addressing it further.

Though, could you explain why this wasn't ahelped? Seems like this could've been easily dealt with during the round.

I did not ahelp because I was dealing with it ICly, and waited until the shuttle came to ask Farkas about the canonicity of his death. In retrospective, I should have tried ahelping right after that so there could have been a chance the staff replied and spoke to him, instead of me making this thread.

That's alright, we'll look into this and have the player in question respond. Just something to keep in mind in the future.

I currently play Ward Sagan.

The reason I didn't allow the other two medical staff to handle it because the Captain and CIAA agent on board the station stated over medical channel that the character of Kunta X was not allowed to continue working on any patients for that shift.

The other medical staff was a fresh medical resident who didn't even know where the fitness room was and allowed an assistant to die while I was trying to stabilize the incoming injured from the blob and process the deceased to clone them.

I cloned Bigby Farkas, gave him full cryo- treatment, gave him some alkysine, and moved to help stabilize injured coming in. When I arrived back at the cryo cells, his things were gone, and he was missing. He walked out without me having a chance to sit him down and explain what happened.

The comment about "Sorry, Bigby, I was busy grabbing dead" was referring to me going to get the corpses from medical lobby and the main hallways. I knew he would be confused as to why he ended up in medbay so I wanted him to be aware that I didn't forget he was there, I was just busy working.

It was not until the Blob fiasco and Bigby being cloned that medical finally received a doctor I could ask to help but by that time, I had nearly processed a good chunk of the people. The only other doctor that I could have called was Mika, whom I never even saw enter medical bay.

I've not got much to say about the situation besides that I was very busy trying to help multiple at once and couldn't quite give as much mental health attention as i would have liked.

I think the issue here is that you over-reached a bit. A good rule of thumb is to always focus on the living. "Can the current staff handle the wounded while I clone?" If the answer is no, you should hold off on the cloning. You could go ahead and scan the bodies quickly while the players are around but come back to the actual cloning when you've got the time and means to give them the physical and mental treatment cloned patients require.

[mention]keinto[/mention] Is there any specific action you have in mind for this to be conducted by staff?

To me it doesn't seem like a case of willful neglect, but rather being swamped and thinking they can manage better. At the moment I'm just considering advising them per my post above.

The thread should function as evidence of Ward's failure so that if it happens again in the future (which I am hopeful it won't) we will have something to refer back to if he continues neglecting clones this way.

Besides that, I don't think even a warning is necessary.

That's quite reasonable. Reviewing their records, this is the only incident for clone treatment which I would say is sub par at the very least. It would be an issue if it occurred often when it could've been avoidable.

So I think I'll leave it to an advisory for the player in question, with a reminder that if it did happen too often, it may pose a problem.

This is the advisory in question and should cover the cloning topic. I'll deem this as resolved with a minimum period of 24 hours before I lock and archive it.
