SS13 Language Issues

There is a certain issue that has been popping up since I've started playing a russian themed character, more specifically, that everyone expects me to know russian. I always stop them there and say that I don't really know russian OOCly, but that doesn't stop the IC conversation.

The problem that people seem to neglect is that more than four centuries have passed since today's date and that humanity has spread across the stars in that period. Even if ethnic spacific communites were kept, their language would sound nothing like their today's counterparts. Culture and language changes over time to fit their enviroment. For example, a bunch of russian colonists that settled a barren planet with nothing but breathable atmosphere three centuries ago would not drink vodka considering wheat most likely wouldn't grow there. So unless you expect them to tell stories about ancient vodka drinking ancestors and their quest for good vodka, they would've moved away from their cultural drink long ago.

This is more of a rant than a suggestion, but please, keep in mind that there are IC reasons for me not knowing russian before you shit on me or start talking about it.

You're completely right, of course. A lot of people on this server have this absurd notion that languages never change or go away. Hell, sol common itself is a bastard love child of mandarin, english, and a couple other "normal" lannguages. That generally implies that all of those languages have been /assimilated/ and are /no longer commonplace, if not dead./

And don't get me started on the people that run around speaking latin.

There are a handful of people in the world who are able to hold a conversation in fluent Latin. In no way would that be possible 400 years later.

While I agree that People shouldn't presume that you automatically speak this language which is more rare than it is today. There are still enclaves where languages like (Traditional) English, German, Russian, Mandarin, Spanish and such still exist and some characters may or may not speak those languages. But yeah, people shouldn't run around speaking Latin and asking space-Russians why they're not drinking Vodka.

Why not? We have the internet, We will still have the internet in space, There will always be one or a handful of Hipsters that will speak Latin, Especially because Latin is a very well preserved Archaic Language.

Well, you might on to something. Latin is one language that doesn't changes since it isn't used in speach. We use it for scientific terms even today and it's a tradition that would most likely last for centuries. But that doesn't mean anyone would actually speak it.

Communities on Earth still speak Aramaic, A language older than Latin, Why would no one speak Latin? The Pope, the head of the ROman Catholic church is /Required/ to know Latin.

Yes, if pope exists at that point. I bet that 90% of catholic priests can't /speak/ latin at this point in history. There is no reason to expect that this trend wouldn't continue. Besides, I've yet to see a catholic priest in game who speaks it, in that case it's alright I guess.

In any case, these are small languages that don't see much use. They are preserved in special circles instead, not in common man, which is, regardless of how snowflaky characters can get, what most of the station crew are.
