[Accepted]Vrow - Skrell Application.

Recommended Posts

BYOND Key: Vrow

Character Names: (From Most to Least played) Lawrence Powers, Verdigris, SAAI, Elena Remei, Porter Cowart, Sebastian Carter, Zachariah Rogers, Hayden Faustian, Victor Wall.

Species you are applying to play: Skrell.

What color do you plan on making your first alien character (Dionaea & IPCs exempt): Pale Green.

Have you read our lore section's page on this species?: Yes, although I'm still not sure if the AUMS is supposed to be Aliose or Aloise.

Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph format. One paragraph minimum per question

Why do you wish to play this specific race:

After a throughout reading of their wiki page, Skrell fall under a very neat "Intelligent, Efficient, Logical" mindset I tend to adore in characters and the like. And I find very interesting their deeper emotional aspect and their difficulties of conveying it to non-skrell, as it's something I can relate a lot. The asexual aspect is another big factor which I can relate a bunch.

Identify what makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a Human:

While there's nothing much mechanically different, it's how they behave and their history in which they shine. Their logic-oriented mindset makes them actually stop and properly assess a situation instead of hastly jumping into action and/or conclusions, yet their pride seems to make them not consider the worst results (such as the Glorsh Rebellion, where they had not heed the warning before it was far too late). Plus, their efficient mindset making them drop and overlook parts of the Common syntax and appear as cold as they look, yet still being deeply emotional in their own language. The way they see other species almost as if they were children, another way their pride manifests as patronizing attitude but not out of maliciousness.

Character Name: Woxyl Glunvek-Qwon

Please provide a short backstory for this character, approximately 2 paragraphs

Born and grown in an underground facility in Aliose, 2392, Woxyl would live close by the medical laboratories with his fair share of health problems, fascinated and with an interest that would only deepen the older he got, as would his anguish the more he learned history and how he'd notice so many fellow colleagues, friends and family still suffering by the actions of synthetics.

Woxyl would find balance in Qeblak through a friend, a star-bright earnest to help his kind along with the desire to climb among celestial bodies motivating him through his studies, work and roughest moments. He'd decide to focus on the chemical processes, the reactions and compounds of elements and how they could be used to heal and aid the ones hurt through medicines and the like, already born so close to the esteemed Aloise University of Medical Sciences, and he’d give back just as much as he managed to learn, working as a Pharmacist in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry of AUMS.

Even then, he'd be dissatisfied with himself and work harder towards a doctorate of medicine as chemistry could only go so far. With a MD, he would finally be able to help directly, while still capable of assisting in the chemistry development.

His desire to create more medical compounds through elements still to be discovered would make him reach for the cosmos. And what better way to help the progress of medical chemistry other than working with the leader of all things phoron among the stars?

[More detailed version below.]

Woxyl Glunvek would be the first from a clutch of three to hatch after intense treatment along with his sister Wunn, while the third egg would be unsalvageable. Even then they'd have their fair share of health problems. For Woxyl, it'd be a weak heart and minor immunity system issues, which would make his trips to Medical facilities and laboratories just as often as other young skrells of intense treatment. From those visits, Woxyl would be endlessly amazed by the procedures, and would also notice the exhaustion in the staff's movements, how their intones were shaken by the end, a small hitch at certain hints and mentions of things synthetics.

Like grains, those little moments would mount heavy in his heart. A weight that would grow in classrooms, attentive to lessons and documentaries, of the horrors frozen in pictures and still frames.

It didn’t make sense for him, then. And due to fainting spells from his weakened heart, he’d meet Qwon Weilri in the ever familiar medical facility, whose infectious wonder of the galaxy and how they were mere specks to something so vast would instill a sense of purpose on Woxyl. Just as there were elements yet to be discovered and clusters yet to be reached, there’d be ways of him to help and be just as guiding as constellations.

Woxyl Glunvek-Qwon would turn his attention to his heart medication, at how mere units of a single thing could make such a difference. They were the untapped possibilities, the compounds yet to be discovered. And born so close to the esteemed Aloise University of Medical Sciences, and he’d give back just as much as he managed to learn, working as a Pharmacist in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry of AUMS.

It would also be in his early career in which his heart would finally fail, something easily amended by heart implants - only, he’d refuse. Woxyl would opt for an experimental procedure involving a prototype of what would become known as Peridaxon, a near miracle-like compound made possible only with the discovery of Phoron. Woxyl would still do anything in his power if it meant helping the future of his kind.

However, there would be too many things chemistry alone could not heal, not until the proper elements were fully researched, which could take far too long. This fact would pressure Woxyl into achieving a MD, being able to directly aid the wounded while still able to contribute to the long term of chemical development.

Woxyl would look back to the discovery of Phoron, and wonder what else the cosmos held. What other elements that could hold a potential just as infinite as the unobservable universe?

It would be this hope that would push him to climb higher, to reach towards the cosmos. And what better way to help the medicine development other than working with the leader of all things Phoron among the stars?

What do you like about this character?

Woxyl's utter optimism and love for the future of his kind, his prose which leans heavily on Qeblak and astrological terms while his Tau Ceti is short and clipped. I'm not a hopeful or extroverted person by nature, but I do feel that Woxyl would be an interest change of pace.

How would you rate your role-playing ability?

7/10. I still have issues maintaining character and not powergaming, both of which I've been trying to work on.

Notes: This is my first time making an application, and I apologize for any grammatical errors or incoherent sentences.

Hahahaha... same.

Vrow doesn't break character. My brain hurts, trying to think of how anyone could possibly write a stutter so diligently. And I believe that this Skrell, a noble journeyer of Queblak for the Stars, will proudly represent his race in medical. The hesitance toward synthetics by mere word-of-mouth, the desire to see the stars... I'm surprised this is your first time applying. Such a fine roleplayer and a pleasure to work with. +1

Another one to the ranks.

Your IC roleplay is good, better than most people, in fact. I haven't seen any instances of you powergaming, so I do think you're underestimating yourself a bit there. Your OOC conduct is also pretty good, and I don't have anything else to say about that.

Onto the application. The backstory seems a little short to me. Perhaps you could expand on what he did in Aliose, the education he got and where, and such? It's often better to have a clear cut backstory so that you don't have to make everything up on the spot and to make sure that you don't contradict your own words later. Which has happened to some people. I like your answers to the other questions, so I don't have an issue giving a +1 here. Though expanding the backstory would increase your odds of being accepted a lot.

[...] The backstory is only slightly lacking, but that's more from a story-writing standpoint than anything else.

+1.

Thank you so much for the feedback. I admit I ended up hesitating in the backstory, trying to keep it at 2/3 paragraphs that was still compelling to read without a block of information.

I have edited the backstory section to contain the more detailed version, as well as adapting the 2/3 paragraph version with clearer information.

+1 from me as well, Dr Powers and Cowart are great characters that put up with me coming in all sorts of states while maintaining character, would love to see how ya play a Skrell. Verdigris is also great to have around and pretty sure I've met Remei, Carter and Hayden! All are very friendly and good at their jobs. Give this man a whitelisting! :D

I enjoyed the backstory for this one, though don't know all that about skrell to be honest, felt like I learned from it either way.

Add 'im to the squid army. But seriously, I know Lawrence most of all, as I think most people also do. He runs the line between famous and infamous so well with his iconic stutter and the fact that he'll never move past resident rank. This might sound like I'm ripping into the character but I genuinely love it. He RPs well, he seems a nice guy OOCly as well which is always a plus. Not to mention I love me some squidd. Definite +1.

Hey there. Loow here.

There's a lot of love in this character design and in this backstory. There's plenty of feedback here, and it all seems to be singing praises.

Let me take a moment and just say good job. I want to see how you bring this character to life, and it looks like a lot of other people do too.

Application Accepted.
