BYOND Key: geeves

Character Names: Harvey Isemann, Grayson Mintfill, Geoff Lufvio, Skrawl, Touch Of The Light, Trust In Everlasting Hope

Species you are applying to play: Unathi

What color do you plan on making your first alien character (Dionaea & IPCs exempt):

AyjNJbK.png

Have you read our lore section's page on this species?: Yep!

Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph format. One paragraph minimum per question

Why do you wish to play this specific race: This is one of those races that constantly bring a "woah" feeling, to me. The first time I read the written news article about the Unathi Crisis, the HMV Cataclysm ramming the NMV Daedalus gave me goosebumps. The Unathi Honor system also conveniently aligns with how I like to play my characters, which is quite nice!

Identify what makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a Human: As mentioned above, the Honor system would change how the character would respond to conflict of any kind, preferring to face it head-on. The species is also a few eras behind the rest of the galaxy, only recently being thrusted onto the galactic stage, with a massive technology boost that the species now has to adapt to.

Character Name: Ruzaaki Ih'akhar

Please provide a short backstory for this character, approximately 2 paragraphs:

Ruzaaki hatched from a clutch of three in 2420, being the second to make it out. Born in Teht, far from those that lived in the mainland, his hobbies included lying on rocks and making doodles in the sand. Growing up he was quite unremarkable, being slightly stubborn and arrogant in his youth. His interests included throwing rocks at anything that moved, and loitering in front of storefronts before being chased away. His father tried his best to instill some Th'akh values into Ruzaaki, managing to get some core values and teachings in. Ruzaaki's personality however bloomed in his teenage years, making an almost complete one-eighty.

In his teenage years, he had dug up an old artifact whilst playing in the sand. He continued digging and started to find more and more pieces of the past. This quickly turned from game, to hobby, to ambition. He showed his father, who wasn't really interested, but chose to support his son's interest. Taking a more archaeology centered approach in his schooling. Midway through his schooling, the unthinkable happened. The Unathi made contact with aliens. The start of the Contact War had humbled him, his father and later he himself being drafted into the army. After the war, he and his father decided to lay low, experiencing the horrors of war did a toll on them, although the glory they received numbed it significantly.

The nuclear weapons being deployed made his father fear for their clan's safety, opting to take the first shuttle to Ouerea, opting to settle from from the mainland yet again, they chose Um'a'yid as their final choice. Here Ruzaaki continued his studies, getting accepted into a multi-species Human and Skrell run university. Here in Ouerea, he discovered his love for digging, but in a difference sense this time. He was informed that there were vast cave systems that spanned the sub-terrain below Ouerea, and Ruzaaki made it his goal to search each and catalogue his findings.

He enjoyed this job a lot, as he was accompanied by Unathi Rangers and Hephaestus survey teams that all shared his interest in what lay below the ground. Doing the same thing for years made Ruzaaki careless, as he begun ignoring more and more safety regulations, his arrogant behaviour arising once more. He started going into the caves alone and without any support. This quickly came to his near-downfall, as a cave-in pinned his arm between two rocks, which broke a part of his back and some of his ribs. Through sheer luck or an Ancestor's influence, one of his colleagues came upon him and radio'd for help immediately. Upon arrival, the medics declared that removing the rock would be impossible and risked more damage or even death to Ruzaaki.

They opted for amputation. Rushing to the nearest hospital, Ruzaaki's medical team was intercepted by a Th'akh Shaman, demanding to be taken to the hospital along with Ruzaaki. After a heated discussion with a Skrell doctor over the unconscious Ruzaaki, the Shaman had convinced the doctor to repair the organic parts of Ruzaaki as best he can, by implanting tissue rapidly cloned from Ruzaaki’s own tissue, these tissue were in their infancy and required a pace-maker to work, which was installed under the Shaman’s blessing. Upon re-awakening Ruzaaki was informed of what had happened. His back, muscles and spinal column, were irreparably damaged and wouldn’t be able to be fixed without replacing organic flesh and bone with synthetic plastic and steel. This presented him with a limited array of choices. Either he stay bedridden for the rest of his life, take the synthetic route which he, his values and the Shaman were heavily against, or accept an experimental new treatment co-developed by Nanotrasen's top scientists, which consisted of both Skrell and Humans.

Ruzaaki opted for the experimental treatment, unknown to him this was their first time doing it on a live subject. The treatment consisted of a serum filled with various amounts of slime extract and healing chemicals refined from phoron. Some days after the treatment started, news broke about the cave-in, causing some controversy among his clan and his friends. An uneventful week passed, and then the big news hit. Ruzaaki had indeed discovered an ancient tomb, but a large part of it was damaged by the cave-in, which an investigation concluded was caused by a piece of heavy machinery that was incorrectly secured. This sparked major outrage among his peers and tainted the name of his clan. He was temporarily humbled by this, yet again, pledging to restore his clan’s honour.

The scientists, taking advantage of this, transported him into the safety of Tau Ceti, where the outrage couldn’t reach him. Here he worked on and off on various research projects. He could only handle the theory work, his injury was still debilitating and didn’t allow much movement. He quickly became frustrated and demanded he be allowed to do something more physical. The scientists relented and brought him onto their local station on the rim of Tau Ceti, the NSS Aurora II. Here he observed them working in the Xenoarchaeology Division of the Science Department. Again neglecting safety standards, he demanded to work on some of the rock samples they brought in, carefully chiselling the rocky parts apart at a desk they had given him.

This enthusiasm for the work quickly caught the employer’s eye, they had given him an offer for the position of Xenoarchaeologist. Considering his frustration at not being able to work, and the steep cost of the treatment, he accepted and forced the scientists to speed up his recovery so he could start working as soon as possible. Some days later, he was deemed ready to work and he climbed right into saddle, where he now works valiantly to restore his clan’s honour, and repay his Ancestors for saving him back in the cave.

What do you like about this character?: I like the fact that he isn't a 10/10 goody character. He has an arrogant nature that gets him into trouble more often than not, which in turn temporarily humbles him. I also enjoy that he's my first original character that has an amputated limb and an actual reason for having it.

How would you rate your role-playing ability?: A solid 7/10.

Notes: As usual, I wrote this whilst in a trance, so grammatical, spelling, logic or even plain word errors will be everywhere. Feel free to shout at me to fix it, and I will do so as soon as possible!

I don’t know Unathi lore so I’m not really going to post anything about that, but Geeves’ ability to RP the whitelists he already has.

I think I’ve only met his Diona, and I didn’t seem any problems regarding it. The language and phrases they used were fitting, their behaviour was no different from an experienced Diona player, etc.

I feel like he’d tackle this just as well.

I dig playing with Geeves. ICly running into him is fun, because he loves to chat in game, as much as he focuses on playing. I've even Rp'd with him as an antag quite a few times, and he keeps the mix of action and RP at a steady pace. Fuck yeah, get that Uthani. +1

Hello,

Thank you for your application.

You show a good understanding of the themes of the Unathi in their history and also culture. I particularly like how you kept his restless, rather rebellious streak to adulthood, but tempered by consequences that create clear moral lessons. The incident with the cave feels like an Aesop fable, which is a good theme to go for for unathi backstories in many cases.

I also like the little details that show who Ruzaaki is, with his childhood pastimes.

After the cave in things do feel slightly rushed. I am still not clear on what exactly HAPPENED to him. What did they replace the organic parts with? What did the experimental treatment do?

Being put on the Aurora is rushed. He's just dumped on the Aurora in a prestigious xenoarchaeologist role. It feels anti-climactic. Being wounded and straddled with debt was a good moral lessons but there's nothing to really be had of how he got the Aurora job. He just shows up one day and clocks in.

I don't think being trapped by debt and forced to work on the Aurora without any of his initiative about it makes for a strong finale. This application would be very strong if you showcased why he comes to the Aurora.

Sinta'Unathi are culturally very conservative, and they are not very open to new changes and ideas. There is a lot of potential in your Unathi's arrogance and eagerness to smack right against that culture wall. Unearthing ancient artifacts and 'defiling' ancient tombs is definitely something that might upset people. You could say that people reacted to his cave-in incident by blaming it on him irritating the ancestors, thus causing his superstitious friends and family to start shunning him. You could say it was a more personal thing, where he blamed himself.

Those are two suggestions, but they are the sort of thing I am looking for. His path from Moghean archaeologist to Aurora xenoarchaeologist should be fleshed out, and if that is done then this application will be rock solid. At least until a plucky young archaeologist starts chiselling at it in 12,000 years for ancient wisdom and our ghosts have to curse the guy with eternal IBS to teach them a moral lesson about vandalizing ancient stuff.

Woop woop! Edited the last four paragraphs based heavily on Jackboot's suggestions.

[EDIT] On further thought, the slime extract might be a bit extreme, subject to change.

[EDIT 2] I just thought about having them implant a healing anomaly into him and it being activated by an electronic pulse of a pacemaker. Whichever or neither fits better I can just slot in.

Thanks for reading <3

What is it with Unathi and losing their limbs, it's like the Ken dolls they just come right off constantly and have to be replaced.

Joking, the story is good enough I'd say more interesting and more refined than your Tajara story, I feel like you had a clearer picture in your head when making this and it really shows.

Outside of that Geeves is a fun player to have around, sometimes he stumbles with his roleplay and can get "rushy rushy" into antag/exciting situations with characters that shouldn't really be there. However it has yet to pose a problem outside of a minor eyeroll from me.

So yes, he gets my

Hello,

Your edits have greatly fleshed out the character. I appreciate the addiitonal emphasis on how he got to Aurora, and the fallout from his incident and how it affected him and his friends and family.

Application accepted!
