Self bump since I just remembered this 3 months later and I still really want it to be a thing.
-
I haven't played in a while, but I get what you mean. I have had absolutely fantastic experiences RPing as an officer because I usually attempt to give the antag a chance OOCly, unless they are going ham and trying to murder everyone, in which case all bets are off. However, a lot of sec players don't think this way at all (a few examples spring to mind, but they may have changed so I won't name any names). For example, a raider was hiding out alone, with a ballistic weapon, in the oldmap mining outpost (I know, old example, but one of the most obvious I can think of). He had blocked off the narrow glass hallway leading to the second half of the mining outpost with an O2 tank, and was standing there. Neither me nor the other officers were wearing space suits, so a firefight would have gotten us all killed, as he could've shot out the glass before I could have taken him down. So, I order them back, so they aren't in the way of depressurization, and attempt to talk down the raider. We have an intense holdout situation, where I try to deescalate the situation while I wait for backup with voidsuits. We have an intense bout of RP, with me trying to convince him to surrender, and going with the argument of "I'm just doing my job, mate, I don't want to kill you." Suddenly, after a minute or two of this, another officer with a breacher suit comes in and lasguns the guy, who doesn't even return fire because he doesn't want to kill me with the ballistic weapons (I think I fired a few potshots to support the breacher). The breacher proceeds to then slaughter all of the other raiders without much resistance and certainly no RP, and captures the one I was negotiating, who is barely alive after a barrage of lasers. I think it's a lot more enjoyable for both parties if people RP the former (IE an out of his depth cop trying to make the best of a bad situation). I try to do this most of the time, pointing guns at people and yelling "GET ON THE GROUND" before I open up, trying to help crew with daily problems with a hefty dose of "Ma'am"s and "Sir"s, or, my favorite, acting like an MGS guard when I may spot something suspicious (IE. investigating a little bit, going "Huh? What was that?" and then backing off saying it must have been nothing after a bit) like a cloaked ninja charging. Sometimes I fall into the other camp though, because I must admit the idea of your officer becoming the antag's bitch when he's supposedly a tough guy is extremely unappealing (not that I mind that on other characters, like Francois, who gets taken hostage frequently).

Self bump yet again. Server needs something like this more than ever imo.

[Resolved] Character complaint against Alicia Forest
driecg36 replied to Knightroid's topic in Complaints Boards Archive
As someone who plays CE somewhat regularly, I can agree, there is ALWAYS conflict about the tesla with alica forest. Every single round I have to tell her not to build the tesla, something which she is vocally displeased about. Honestly, I think it's more a problem with the tesla than it is with the player. It is outrageously easy to sabotage, and often leads to early shuttle calls, which is why I ban it every single round as CE unless there is an absolute emergency. -
Honestly, I like this. It gives the advantage to the person with the weapon, which is the way it should be, while still allowing an unarmed and skilled person to disarm. If locked to either a passive or aggressive grab that would be fine. However, I do think clicking on someone with disarm should still have some effect, though purely for self defense. Instead of having a chance of getting rid of their gun, it should have a chance push them one or two tiles, with a tiny amount of stun (not on the ground stun, just unable to do anything for like half a second stun). Force gloves should retain their current disarm status.
-
I was the officer in question who ran away after being almost kidnapped by superior, before the roboticist saved me (albeit I had called for help before the robo even showed up). I have a lot of problems with disarm RNG, mainly because my luck is so ass with it. Why can I get instantly tackled down by any prisoner I'm trying to move with almost no counterplay (aside from getting up and kicking his ass, or stunning them beyond any reasonable standard)? Why can some rando just bat the baton/knife/gun/esword out of my hand on the first try? It feels so odd and immersion breaking when that happens. I'm not quite sure what the solution would be, but there definitely needs to be one.
-
Shameless self-bump because I still really want this to be in the game.
-
I like this, but I don't like it being possibly mandatory. That would really fuck with sec antags, and make them near impossible to play as. I think implementing this as something fully optional would be great though.

[Accepted]driecg36 Skrell whitelist app

Mofo1995, thank you, I'm glad you liked it! I've never done a religious character before, and I found that qeblak was pretty interesting while remaining fluid enough to not restrict my RP, and that a spiritualist/romantic skrell would make for a fun character. Even if glorsh was a colossally influential event, and a somewhat recent one too in skrell terms, I didn't really want to make my first skrell character focused on it, since there's so much more to skrell than "muh ai." Though I do have a couple ideas for antag skrells revolving around AI, I feel like most skrell that work for NT shouldn't be centered around hating AI, considering the fact that NT uses a them regularly. Sure, most skrell will have many misgivings about synthetics, but not outright center their entire lives around hating them. -
[Resolved] Player Complaint against yacobpo157
driecg36 replied to Superiorform's topic in Complaints Boards Archive
Actually, stover wasn't the one who shot the RD or the one who shot me (the HoP) with the slugs, those were both separate officers. The first time it was a cadet with rubbers, and the second time it was an officer who hoped to get in a shot when the ninja had turned around. However, he was continuously encouraging me and the other officers to attack, kill the hostage, and simply clone them later. Later he told staff this was a bluff, which I could believe had he not said it sec comms multiple times where the ninja wouldn't hear it. I can verify the third problem though, he was extremely belligerent and whiny that he warden didn't hand him out heavy duty lethals when he was the detective that round, though that is an ICly problem, not one that belongs in a character report. -
[2 Dismissals: Archived] Laser Weapon Ammunition

I'm actually a really big fan of them being hitscan. Makes them feel like actual lasers, and laser firefights look dope as a result. -
[2 Dismissals: Archived] Laser Weapon Ammunition
driecg36 replied to Outboarduniform's topic in Archive
I do think it really odd to have to pull back all the way to a recharger to continue fighting in a prolonged firefight, and it really takes you out of the action while being honestly somewhat immersion breaking. Sure laser rifles are powerful, but at the end of the day, any antag with ablative or even burn meds is gonna pretty much ignore anything but a massive amount of burst damage. However, fighting a large amount of spiders is a colossal pain in the ass when you have to pull back, recharge for a minute or two, then go back to keep fighting. A simple reload system with rechargeable clips seems really beneficial here, especially for antags. It would make laser/energy weapons somewhat more logical ICly, and a lot more fun to use. I'm not a fan of needing a tool like a screwdriver to reload them however. Simply having a one or two second delay on removing/inserting clips would be more than enough to keep the weapon balanced so you can't just insta reload and empty 40 lasers into an antag. I think energy weapons have enough hard counters that this really wouldn't make them OP, since a single EMP completely neuters a sec officer equipped with energy weapon, and ablative/energy shields/eswords are all pretty strong against lasers so. This would also give research things to do by producing more, better cells. Maybe even producing cells with specific effects, like incendiary or shotgun. That would make RnD a lot more useful/interesting in producing weapons for sec, if all they needed to do was make the cell imo. -
Maybe a "lite" ion effect is in order. Doesn't permanently disable tech/decharge it, just makes it unusable for a few seconds. Could be used to stun IPC's without damaging them. Though I do think the main use for a mechanic like this would be against combat ninjas, who are a colossal pain to deal with when there's only one ion rifle on the map. Edit: the X-19 should have this, and honestly a few more things. Maybe an "ion taser" that has exactly this effect, but the armory only gets one or two?
-
I very much like the idea of rifles that switch between ion and laser, but i feel like 5 shots is a little low, especially considering it's a weapon locked behind RnD. I feel like the 5 shot version could very well be within the standard armory gear rotation (maybe even the 10 shot version tbh). I think making an "ion weapon" crate that you can order from cargo would work splendidly for this, having 2 X-19s, 2 ion rifles, and 2 EMP nades. for 60-70 points. Ion melee weapons are a little weak and wouldn't really work in a sec role, but would be really cool in the hands of antags like mercs and raiders.
-
I feel like the ninja should have some way of disguising his hardsuit module, since currently they are a massive tell something's up, both ICly and OOCly. Give it a projector that either hides it or gives it the appearance of a back. A chameleon jumpsuit would also be neat. Tools like this would allow the ninja to be more stealthy without simply spamming teleport and cloak. The wizard, however, is a little different. They are outlandish by nature. Maybe giving them some basic illusion spells might help? Maybe even having an entire illusion schools? Things like making people believe things (like jedi mind tricks) and looking like specific people/specific uniforms would be neat.
-
I mean, I understand officers that do that. Especially with ninja. With wizard, I usually just say "it's a dottering old man, let's get you your ID grandpa." The problem with ninja is that some unknown person comes onto the station with a high tech piece of software, unwarned. If you really want to peace ninja/wiz, you should prolly ahelp and see the admins will announce your arrival as something to be expected. Or at the very least come through arrivals checkpoint instead of just popping up in the middle of the station.

Not to self advertise, but vampire is my favorite antag and it's so rare to see them, since they aren't in ANY mixed secret modes. It's partially why I wrote this suggestion: https://forums.aurorastation.org/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=8720, and even though I love mixed secrets, there are a lot of problems with it that result in situations like this where a great antag doesn't get to see the light of day (double entendre intended).

Thanks, I put a lot of effort into Leonce, and I quite like him as a character. Glad you do too! -
I get the appeal of rating the antags from 0-100, but I feel like that would just make things more unnecessarily complicated. One of the main pros of this suggestion was making sure there was a limit on the crazy/clusterfuck rounds, so we wouldn't end up with cult+rev+malf+merc or something insane like that.

Alright, after having played a few ling rounds, I switched ling to 2 and traitor to one. And honestly Mappel6 I still feel like "Utterly FUBAR" is still less hard to deal with than paranoia or siege lol.

BYOND Key: driecg36 Character Names:Pierre Leonce, Aramis Laurent, Andrei Yeltsin, MAC, Valentine, Francois Leonce Species you are applying to play: Skrell What color do you plan on making your first alien character (Dionaea & IPCs exempt): Teal Have you read our lore section's page on this species?: Yes Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph format. One paragraph minimum per question Why do you wish to play this specific race: Skrell have a very deep history, and are nowadays quite rarely seen on station. I think their rich culture and intriguing attitude towards the other races make them very enjoyable to play as, while their difficulty with basic is an interesting handicap/modifier to RP. The skrell also have a really interesting history (especially with synthetic life) as well as a very unique set of customs and beliefs. Identify what makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a Human: Skrell have a much worse grasp on common, usually speaking in very curt, simple sentences, having difficulty to understand inflections and nuances in the language of others. However, in their own language, Nral'Malic, the skrell are capable of even more subtility and emotion than humans, though this is lost on the more primitive races. Skrell also have a very deep and bitter history with synthetics, meaning they treat them with suspicion at best and disdain at worst. Skrell also have a fascination with progress and learning, making them very dedicated to their work and placing an enormous pressure on individual skrells to succeed. Skrells are typically very logical, though they find admitting mistakes extremely shameful. Skrells are typically somewhat ascetic, not seeking out luxury for the sake of it, and are generally herbivores, preferring soft foods due to their lack of teeth. Skrell can also live much, much longer than humans, and therefore can acquire a colossal amount of experience and skills by the end of their lives, as well as having many skrell that were present during historical events still alive today. Character Name: Wrelshi Hrgul'Qeblak Please provide a short backstory for this character, approximately 2 paragraphs Born in 2359 on Kal'lo, Qerrbalak, Wrelshi Hrgul'Qeblak was born to a respected Aeronautics Engineer and Astrophysicist who were key members in the reconstruction of the Skrell space program, post-Glorsh Rebellion. They were also devoted Qeblaks, who placed much value on the stars and their meaning in every day life, and they raised their son to these ideals. Wrelshi was particularly fascinated with the functioning of spaceships and space stations, and found that exploring the stars and the universe was the way he wanted to spend his life. He attended a prestigious engineering school on Qerrbalak, much to the pride of his family, where he learned all the skills necessary to run, operate, and improve space ships. For many years, he served as engineer, and chief engineer, in the Jargon Federation Navy, but was displeased at the lack of exploration and discovery he could perform in a military environment. Wrelshi decided to rediscover his Qeblak roots, adding " 'Qeblak" to his legal name, resigning from the JFN, and deciding to explore the worlds and stars of the humans first, learning basic and imbibing human culture along the way. He discovered Nanotrasen, and fascinated with their wide reach and incredible phoron research. His stellar record meant NT was ecstatic at the opportunity to hire him, where he was quickly promoted to the position of Chief Engineer and sent to the NSS Aurora. Despite Hrgul'Qeblak's misgivings with NT's use of synthetics, he sees his position as CE as an opportunity to keep them in check, while still being able to pursue his dreams. What do you like about this character? I quite enjoy his somewhat spiritualist nature, as I've never attempted a religious character before. He also has a rich history, with a lot of interesting lore to build off of, making him an interesting character with a lot of possibilities. His attitude is very interesting, usually being very calm and methodical, preferring resolving problems through reason and logic rather than brute force. He isn't as arrogant or dismissive as most people think skrell are, since he wishes to learn from humans rather than dismiss them. He also has a lot of potential to develop meaningfully in conjunction with his faith and his want to explore and discover. How would you rate your role-playing ability? I think a solid 8/10. I have a decently wide variety of unique characters, which I can all RP quite well. I can usually create compelling experiences through my character's personality, and I think I have been doing very well as a (mostly) non-violent HoP recently (Francois Leonce). Notes:

[Resolved] Player Complaint on Superiorform
driecg36 replied to Prospekt's topic in Complaints Boards Archive
Alright, so as I said before, I was the HoP Francois Leonce this round. I'm gonna start at the beginning: We had just destroyed a rampant AI, dealt with horrible monsters, traitors, breakins to the bridge and attempts on our lives, and things were FINALLY beginning to calm down. The captain goes to a command console (one that I was logged in) and makes an announcement somewhat covering up/sugarcoating the things that had happened, which pop up under my name. Before I could even read the announcement, Detective Booker immediately jumps into sec comms and says (these are as i remember them, not the exact wordings). The captain then ordered Booker to his office, most likely for a stern talking to, and booker denied, breaking another regulation. A warrant was then set on booker, who then refused to turn himself in, sparking a manhunt and breaking another reg. What happened afterwards I did not witness, except for a slight amount of the firefight between booker and the security force. Overall, i think booker's conduct as an IPC was extremely subpar. He was completely unaware of what could take down an IPC first of all, which seems to be why he made this report. Second of all, he acted extremely unbelievable and irrational for a FUNCTIONING, non-antag IPC. In fact, I was sure he had been subverted by the AI or something. Why in the hell would NT purchase/hire an IPC that insults the captain, not once, but multiple times, constantly degrades heads by calling them "retarded" and "biggest idiots he's ever seen", breaks multiple regulations, and acts insufferable? That just seems like a bad purchase to me.
