  1. I feel like this can be entirely addressed by intent. Someone on harm intent is harder to tackle than someone on help intent, because they're prepared for a fight.
  2. I can definitely see some of the problems with this, but I do think race diversity is good, as it just spices up the RP and gameplay. You have to remember, unathi males are dinosaurs that go up to 7 ft tall. No human short of Hafthor Bjornsson could tackle that. Personally, I think unathi should be the strongest unarmed combat race, but have problems with ranged weapons; that's a topic for another day. On top of that, the head of security has a bunch of other tools available at his disposal. This would just create more diversity in unarmed combat, not replace armed combat. I think it wouldn't be a bad idea to have multiple variables affect weight. Perhaps close combat expertise would make you more muscled, and therefore heavier? Or maybe just add a new mechanic of "physical fitness" which functions similarly to skills, and affect this stat along with other things like stamina. Again, a topic for another day, but I do definitely think this idea could work with some tweaks (I am biased, however).
  3. The basic gist: When you bump into someone while running, a few different things can happen depending on your intent. Depending on your weight, different things would happen. Weight would be species/gender related, going something like this: Industrial IPC -> Unathi male -> Baseline IPC -> Vaurca warrior -> etc... This would just be a set variable per species, and obesity would send it up a decent amount. HELP INTENT: You bump into them, which gives them a message "Urist McSpessmen has bumped into you!" and lets you pass through them. Purely for RP. Has a slight chance of stopping you and stunning you shortly (or knocking the other person down if you weigh more than them) if you run directly into the person. DISARM INTENT: You throw your full body weight into it, bringing you to a dead halt and knocking down the person for a decent amount of time. The person takes a little brute from the fall, and is stunned for a decent amount of time. Has a chance to miss where you just fall and hit yourself. If the other person weighs more, you bounce off and get stunned. GRAB INTENT: You throw your arms around someone, stunning them for a very brief amount of time but giving you an aggressive grab on them. If they weigh more than you, you get stunned shortly and have only a passive grab. HARM INTENT: You barrel past someone, knocking them onto the ground, hard. If they weigh more than you, you hit the ground just as hard. I don't know how feasible this is coding wise, but I think it would make chase scenes a lot more exciting and have a lot more flavor to them once you catch the person.
  4. I agree with this 200%, and would +1 this as an individual suggestion. It feels so... odd that cuffs are not only so weak, but people can escape them with minimal difficulty. I can see this adding RP, with breaking out of cuffs being something really desperate and difficult, and only to be done as a last resort. Actually, I can see this being a simultaneous nerf to the cuffs. Getting out of cuffs would be possible while being moved, but getting out of cuffs period would damage your hands pretty badly, cause a large amount of pain, and cause bleeding. Pushing or otherwise debilitating the person breaking out of said cuffs would still reset the counter, but the person resisting would take slight damage every time they attempted them, and significant damage if they succeeded.
  5. I have only know adolph in the short time i've been on the server, but he has definitely been one of, if not the, best wardens around. He has good leadership, good RP, and I think would make a natural fit as HoS, since he often ends up filling the HoS's shoes.
  6. I feel like this character is making a lot of enemies and pissing a lot of people off. He's really stubborn, confrontational, and intransigent when it comes to what he believes in. He's been in numerous arguments and spats with his coworkers over matters of conduct or regulation, as well as how things are done. I didn't really intend to take the character in this direction, but his background of pretty much being raised to be an NT goon as well as his deeply rooted beliefs that the company is always in the right cause him to run into a lot of push back. He also can be really blunt and forceful (not physical force usually, just very strict and demanding) with the people on the other end of the baton. He's never abused prisoners, but once he gets it in his head that someone is guilty or at wrong, it takes a LOT of effort to convince him otherwise. He also has a tendency to roll over whatever gets in his way of dispensing justice, which inevitably steps on some toes. Despite all these things, he would never intentionally break regulation in any circumstance. He is however, prone to bending it for the "greater good" of NT, something which may get him in trouble in the future. What are your thoughts on this character? Should I tone down how confrontational he is?
  7. It'd certainly be amazing to have around, but seems like it wouldn't be very much fun to play. Regardless, I still think it would make a great option and +1 the idea.
  8. I agree with uncuffed people being able to uncuff each other, but nerfing cuffs would make sec's lives SUCH a fucking pain when someone comes into the brig that resists at EVERY possible opportunity, with minimal or no RP beyond "i dindu nuffin." Cuffs are a fallback for people who resist. I'd much rather people RP to get out of cuffs, or even better, never be cuffed at all, rather than making cuffs loose, coated in vaseline, and made of plastic...
  9. BYOND Key: driecg36 Character Names: Pierre Leonce, Aramis Laurent, Andrei Yeltsin, Samuel Jets (scrapped/turned into Jackass) Species you are applying to play: IPC What color do you plan on making your first alien character (Dionaea & IPCs exempt): Have you read our lore section's page on this species?: Yes, I have. Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph format. One paragraph minimum per question Why do you wish to play this specific race: I quite enjoy robotic/synthetic characters in fiction, and think they can have really interesting personalities and stories that aren't available to organics, such as problems with sentience and purpose (well people have that last one too sometimes but you get what I mean). I used to main an IPC on paradise back when I played on it (P.I.E.R.R.E. Shit name and shit server I know, haven't touched it a while), and now that I'm getting more used to HRP I have a couple of neat ideas for synthetic characters that aren't really possible with law-bound synthetics. It's something unique that would bring a lot of variety to my RP experience and playtime, and I think I would enjoy that a lot. Identify what makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a Human: Well, to start with the obvious, IPC's are entirely synthethic. No organs, no blood, no pain. Synthetics would be much less afraid to get hurt, but would still have feelings of self-preservation. IPC's also don't feel standard emotion, but instead have emotion synthesizers that are created to simulate emotion, to various degrees of accuracy, which means they would be much less emotional/unpredictable than a normal human. They also have personality emulators, but I my first character will not have one of these. The way IPC's are viewed and treated is also very different, as they have the least options for command out of any species in the game (aside from vaurca, who have none). They are generally mistrusted by the vast of majority of people, especially the skrell who have a backstory with them, and have to work extra hard to maintain relationships as they are quintessentially different from anything else on the station, sometimes having more in common with borgs than with organics. Another difference with IPC's comes from culture; since they really have none, their backstory is very different to that of organics. They don't get educated, they are built in with the appropriate knowledge. They aren't born, they are made for a purpose. They don't have families. The way the company treats them is also very different, as they are often seen as tools to be bought rather than workers to be hired, even if they are unbound. Character Name: Mac Please provide a short backstory for this character, approximately 2 paragraphs Mac, or ENGINEERING MACHINE MODEL C-5 ISSUE 5439 was a factory printed industrial IPC designed with no personality module, no emotional module, and the minimum amount of circuits required to achieve its purpose: engineering. It was trained in all aspects of engineering to be as efficient as possible, with no extra baggage; it was closer to a floorbot than a person. However, when it was shipped out of the factory to be sold to some construction company, the ship carrying it (and 200 of its sister models) underwent a terrible accident, stranding the ship in space with a deceased crew and a heavily damaged shipment. Unit 5439 stayed there, dormant and powered down, for many years until a ship of scavengers came across the wreck of his cargo freight. When picking through its remains, the found one model still functional; unit 5439. The scavengers activated the unit, and it became a part of their crew. At first, they treated it like it was; a simple machine. However, due to its hard work, the scavengers grew fond of it and upgraded its circuits best they could, including getting it a relatively cheap emotion synthesizer. Unit 5439 started to take in its surroundings as more than just plates to weld, owners to protect, and wires to maintain. It began to learn about the world, for the first time. It observed it's human compatriots. It saw how they interacted with each other and tried to imitate them, often failing miserably, a trait which the crew found endearing. Eventually, the crew found that it had enough personality to be called something other than "robot." After many long years of work, it's name had been worn down, until only 3 letters remained clear enough to read: ENGINEERING MACHINE MODEL C-5 ISSUE 5439. Mac was born, and unit 5439 was forgotten. Eventually, the scavengers grew too poor to sustain Mac and upkeep him, so they sold him to Nanotrasen, where it is now employed as an engineer. What do you like about this character? A lot of my characters are kind of assholes, so having an innocent machine trying to learn about the world and just fit in with the people around it would be something new and fresh for me. Generally, I think Mac could have a lot of interesting interactions where he attempts to be "human" and fit in. Mac would generally be non-confrontanional and offensive, but would always try to learn from the things going on around him. He would also try to awkward participate in social interactions, something which could be pulled off as somewhat comical and endearing. How would you rate your role-playing ability? Honestly? Probably a 7/10. I always act like my character would act, and take into consideration my character's personality into everything I do. However, I sometimes get carried away in the moment, especially in intense situation, and kind of switch into "combat mode" where I don't really focus on RP and focus more on winning. I have been trying to overcome and change that, with decent success. Otherwise, I try to create interesting characters that affect the environment their in in a unique way. Notes: I have also played "simple" borgs quite a bit, but no overarching ones, usually opting for default names and RP-ing being more mechanical/simple. I rarely play PAI, but I do about the same things as borgs.
  10. You are right, I shouldn't judge a book by its cover (and it's first page). I mean, the first one is pretty inexcusable as a sec officer. There's no way she doesn't get demoted to cadet even she even attempts that. However, you were dealing with an antag, so Aramis couldn't report it or do anything cept let you get arrested. Second one was just shit RNG. Somehow, the fucking telescopic baton caused serious heart damage. I have no idea how, but it did, and Leonce wasn't too happy about that. However, we all make rash decisions from time to time in security.
  11. Well, you did baton me excessively twice, two rounds in a row. One time I was aramis and you stunned me no less than 7 times while disobeying orders and spacing a lings, when I wasnt even breaking the law or resisting. The other time I made the incident report on. I'm not the type of person to hold grudges, but I agree with berry, from what I've seen you do break regulations quite a bit. Maybe just stretch them instead of break>
  12. Overall, I enjoy the brash, aggressive attitude Sophie has. I think it's interesting, and creates a dynamic in sec between the more reserved officers and the more gung-ho ones. I do however think she needs to slow down with the baton a little. Aside from that, she's an enjoyable, competent person to have in security.
  13. I do think that expanding IPC parts and organic body mods would be really neat, but as Skull said, this particular change doesnt make much sense by itself; I would be for it, in a larger package. Maybe give IPC's modules to use that consume energy that are related to their job? So a bureaucrat IPC would have one of those paper printers, but an engineering one wouldn't. On top of that, robotics could make more of these modules/more advanced modules, and even modules that can be attached to organics (within reason of course).
  14. Thing is, aside from welder fuel (which is liquid not solid you scrubs), pretty much nothing is flammable, so all it does is raise the temperature. TBH I'd much rather welder tanks just have a tiny explosion when shot, but spread a shit ton of fire like a napalm grenade.
  15. Right now, fires are pretty much only caused because of phoron leaks, either accidental or not. The problem is, not only are phoron fires a rather rare occurrence (unless someone is working toxins), but also an incredibly boring one. Almost every instance of phoron fires is immediately contained by auto-shutters, and then can be dealt with remotely 99% of the time by waiting for the fire to burn, then cycling the air through the air alarm, and calling an engineer to fix whatever damage it caused. Phoron fires aren't very fun for anyone involved; the firefighter sits at a console and presses buttons; the victims are either left to burn until the fire goes out, or get out before the fire starts, since phoron spreads instantly across a room. But what about old school, solid fuel fires? I don't know how hard it would be to code, but I do think it would add a lot to not just the atmos experience, but he general station experience as well. They would just be self contained fire tiles that burn anything flammable (I get that most of the station is metal, but still) and spreads until it runs out of oxygen or gets put out. They could start a few different ways, whether it be by a cigarette that wasn't fully put out, a flamethrower, or a spark from a wire. I think this would generate a lot of fun RP and gameplay mechanics overall. People getting yelled at for fire safety, people panicking over a fire, and ACTUAL firefighting! Since the fire doesn't spread instantly over any open area like phoron fires, it would actually be a good idea to be a brave firefighter running into danger with his fire suit and fire extinguisher! Sure, it wouldn't make a massive difference for most rounds, but I really enjoy mini random "crises" that aren't antag related, and I think all the firefighting gear is criminally underused. It'd just be a neat little addition that could create some fun RP and give people something to deal with on slower rounds, while adding to the chaos on faster rounds.
  16. Also, I feel like most people are never on run unless its very intentional in a combat situation, while people occasionally go into harm intent to avoid being pushed and the like.
  17. I still do really think there needs to be a way to crash through it with no resistance, either by running or being on harm intent or something. Otherwise it could lead to some cheap scenarios and being used as blockers, when they really shouldnt be, while still making them uncross able unless someone actively wants to.
  18. Game ID: bOU-aeKM Personnel Involved: - Pierre Leonce; Victim - Sophie Rifler; Offender - Matthew Nithorn; Witness (Witnessed aftermath, not event) Time of Incident: Approximately 3:15 Real time: Approximately 11:20 Eastern UTC, 6/9/17 Location of Incident: Brig Nature of Incident: []Workplace Hazard []Accident/Injury []Destruction of Property [X]Neglect of Duty []Harassment [X]Assault [X]Misconduct []Other _____ (Place an x in the box that applies. If other, replace line and specify.) Overview of the Incident: The incident began with a standard carp hunt. The interim HOS, Rifler, handed me a laser rifle to dispatch the carp, which I did efficiently and effectively (without missing a single shot, might I add). However, when handing it back to her, there was a misfire and I shot her accidentally. I immediately dropped the rifle and rushed to get her medical treatment. She suffered no serious injury, only minor burn damage which I treated and took her to medbay for. Instead of taking any valid form of punishing me, Rifler decided to issue a beating with a telescopic baton, which damaged my heart tissue and sent me into medbay. I believe she threatened further beating as well. I am still in pain from said event, and the doctor said my condition will worsen until I undergo surgery. Noone but me and her were there, but we were under camera surveillance, something which should back up my claim. This is unacceptable behavior from a would be HOS. Afterwards, she completely refused to apologize or accept that her actions were wrong, which led me to write this report. After the captain spoke to her, she rushed to the shuttle medbay, accused me of lying, then took me out of the cryo pod the doctor had put me in. Did you report it to a Head of Department or IAA? If so, who?: Yes, I reported it to the captain Raymond Hawkins. However, the transfer shuttle was about to dock with the station, so he instructed me to file a report to a CCIA post shift while he talked with the HOS. Actions taken: As stated before, I contacted the captain, who then talked with the HOS and told me to contact a CCIA post-shift. Additional notes: The offender, Rifler, had been made an interim HOS by the captain as a measure to test her abilities. I would like to add she is completely unqualified for HoS, or even anything above a cadet, if she not only acts like this, but then proceeds to refuse to admit fault.
  19. Maybe it could block movement when a character is walking, requiring them to either click the tape, or make another input to cross the line. However, if a character is running, they would just crash through it and break the tape?
  20. I do quite like the "missing eye" idea, so that people can't call me out for my eye patch. I dont think it should've crippling effects like lower sight range, just accuracy maluses and much more susceptible to eye damage, considering you only have one. I do think visual conditions would be neat though, like disfigurement or a burn scar. It'd be nice to have things about you character be immediately visible and less left to the imagination through char descriptions, but if there's problems with visual tidbits on your character, it probably isn't worth the effort to code it for such little payoff.
  21. I do think its neat to have a little helper that can always go through doors and scout for you/ask people on the other side to open it for you. Maybe if an antag emags it, the PAI not only loses its "leash," but also gets some new nefarious abilities (IE able to shock doors a door by jacking it, cause minor mayhem of that sort). I do think a leash makes sense lore wise too, just to prevent PAIs from getting "lost." I do definitely see the merit of giving a PAI only its users access, however.
  22. I swear I've not only seen PAIs, but been a PAI, that could go through any door, whatever my master/even if I had no master. I've never once had access denied as a PAI. I do think however, a possible solution to the validhunting PAI problem is make them auto-shut down if they don't have a master, or if they've been too long away from their master. Maybe not make them insta wipe, but make them unable to use any functions or unfold into mobile form.
  23. Honestly, since it was my very first character, he wasn't too interesting. I think his raider alias/personality is a much more interesting direction to take him in rather than try and fix his flaws. I don't have much intention of bringing him back. Oh, I completely understand WHY the rule is there. I'm still gonna try and develop the raider character best I can, but its already hard enough to meaningfully develop a char you can play EVERY round compared to a char you can only play when you roll raider on the few-ish raider rounds we have. Still set on trying to develop this antag char. I think he has the potential to be a lot of fun, even if I've only played as him once.
  24. Ok, so this is kind of a general question when it comes to canon and antags. I have this character who's fucked up a lot (as a non-antag), and feels resentment towards NT in general. Would making him tear up his contract and live life as a raider be acceptable lore wise? OFC I wouldn't play him as a crew member anymore, but would updating his employment/sec records and recreating him whenever I roll raider be OK? I think the raider variation of that character is a lot more interesting/fun than his standard one, and since he was my first character I was thinking of kind of ditching him. Thoughts? I know its necessary, but I get kinda annoyed that you can't really develop meaningful antag chars since they aren't really canon, and you don't actually get to see them that often, since their RP is so fun.
