I'm not sure if Nymphs require the whitelist (I'Ve heard both versions so far), but having them require the whitelist makes sense to me. That being said: Most of the nymphs I've encountered so far have been pretty decent about things. Often the crew member who grew them will ask people to donate blood and most (though not all) nymphs I've seen will not just run up to people and bite them. I'm for quality control here, but I think we should be careful not to demonize everybody playing nymphs here. Furthermore there is the lore aspect. Dionaea, as they are, don't have an awful lot of lore to begin with and the nymphs are one of the few things interesting about them. While no specific changes were suggested here yet, I have this feeling that taking away such a central aspect of their lore will make them even less interesting than they already are. Just my two cents on the whole thing. It's late and I doubt my short line of arguments makes much sense. Sorry.

I don't know if this was a lost a bet, or a drunk decision, or a 4am post, but I don't care, so Coalf: You're a good guy. Thank you, and the rest of the staff, for what you are doing. For the amounts of work you put into the community and the trouble you accept. Thank you so much. This post has been brought to you by: 3am and beer.

[Accepted] Tbear's IPC App
EngineersDream replied to tbear13's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
The character has the potential to a bit wrong, but after a brief talk over discord I'm confident that Tbear can pull it off without going off the chain about it. He gets a +1 from me. -
Hello! BYOND key: EngineersDream Character names: Fae McDonald, Emma Vasilyev, Sea of Rocks, Roar of the Chains, Corrine Nash, Cassidy Smith, Affinity, Affinity Mobile How long have you been playing on Aurora?: I don’t recall. If I had to guess I’d say about 8 months, give or take. I’ve been on the Aurora quite a while ago, then took a break from SS13 and came back. Why do you wish to be on the whitelist?: I want to expand my horizon and the possibilities I have when playing. Why did you come to Aurora?: I was looking for an HRP Server, found the Aurora, played my first round and just stayed. The Server just works for me and I’ve grown quite attached to the community. Have you read the Aurora wiki on the head roles and qualifications you plan on playing?: Yes. Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph each. Give a definition of what you think roleplay is, and should be about: Roleplaying means to shed your personality and assume an artificial one. This means taking a fictional characters point of view, mannerisms, preferences and dislikes as practically your own. Roleplay, from a personal point of view, should be about expanding your horizon, learn and practice empathy and, in terms of the game, allow for a temporary escape from your own life. When it comes to interaction with other players roleplay should be somewhat realistic and offer hooks to learn about other people’s characters as well as offer opportunities to share information about your own. What do you think the OOC purpose of a Head of Staff is, ingame?: I think the OOC purpose of a Head of Staff is to be an IC moderating force of sorts. They have a bigger picture of the situation at hand (usually, at least) and can make sure, that conflict between characters doesn’t get out of hand, that Antags have the possibility to make the round interesting for as many people as possible, to make sure that the round doesn’t end in fire and brimstone 20 minutes in, overall to make sure that people have fun playing. They are also there to ensure that new players can get into the game by providing guidance in character. What do you think the OOC responsibilities of Whitelisted players are to other players, and how would you strive to uphold them?: Like mentioned above the responsibility of a player cover making the game enjoyable. This means that the player in question needs to take in the situation as a whole, to the best of their abilities, and make decisions that ensure a smooth and enjoyable game. To me that means first and foremost not to powergame. Taking what you know about the game mechanics and ensuring that the Antag gets busted 5 minutes after their arrival just isn’t fun. They are also responsible for encouraging roleplaying by engaging other players and allowing stories and character development to take place. Please pick one of your characters for this section, and provide well articulated responses to the following questions. Character name: Nicole Wright Character age: 33 Please provide a short biography of this character (approx 2 paragraphs): Wright was born on a small civilian station orbiting Mars to an industrial supervisor and a lawyer. Wright went through the usual chain of education and eventually enrolled in a smaller, private university on Mars, studying economics and management. After she had finished her Masters of Economics she applied to NanoTrasen and was assigned to managing the civilian sector of a fabrication station orbiting Tret, which mostly provided mass-fabricated parts for terraforming machinery. Her stay on the station was mostly uneventful, except for one incident, during which there was a catastrophic failure in the atmospheric systems of the station. While most residents of the station could be evacuated in time, with the station being re-build successfully afterwards, two cargo technicians died during the incident. Wright ensured that at the very least the bodies of the deceased were recovered, gaining her the reputation of never leaving anyone behind, if it can be helped at all. Wright continued her work on the station until NanoTrasen transferred her to a new station, the Aurora, as a Head of Personnel. What do you like about this character?: I like Wright's tendency to be encouraging and making sure that people have a decent time at work, understanding that a happy worker is a productive worker. It should provide plenty of hooks for roleplaying with other crew members. I generally like playing characters with a positive outlook without being unreasonably happy and optimistic. I think I managed to create a character that fits me without being too snowflakey. What do you dislike about this character?: She lacks a bit of out-of-work interests, which I find the hardest part of writing a believable character for the Aurora. This might leave her a bit out of water during extended and I’m hoping that I can find a hook during play to develop her interests a bit more. What do you think makes this character fit to be a head of staff?: Wright has experience in management and feels highly responsible for the well-being of the staff that works under her. She has an interest in seeing people thrive in the work environment, if at all possible, and does her best to support those who need help as well as those who are ambitious. Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions. How would you rate your own roleplaying?: 8/10, I’d say. I’ve gotten a bit better since my last application, and am generally very invested in my characters, but there’s still quite a few things I need to learn, practice and improve. But at this point I feel pretty comfortable. Extra notes: There’s probably some mistakes in this application. If you find any, let me know so I can fix them. Edited post due to feedback via Discord. x2 Edit: Added character that I've been playing this last week or two. Have a nice day.

Oh, my apologies. I didn't just mean breaches to space. I was talking about dangers of any kind (well, most kinds). I worded that badly. Edited the original reply to reflect that.

I understand why this bothers people, but I'm also for it. IPCs are robust as hell and are currently able to just throw themselves into most dangerous situations that happen to be around, where most species cannot. Giving the ressurection process a little bit of a downside seems reasonable to me. Of course the consequences of the change would have to be tested on the server, but I generally see no big issue here.

BYOND Key: EngineersDream Character Names: Aileen Petersson, Cassidy Smith, Kaylee King, Fae McDonald, Abigail Adams, Chiara Papor, Affinity Species you are applying to play: Dionaea What color do you plan on making your first alien character (Dionaea & IPCs exempt): Excempt Have you read our lore section's page on this species?: Yes. Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph format. One paragraph minimum per question Why do you wish to play this specific race: I find the Dionaea extremely fascinating as they are much more alien than most of the other races. Their different biology is interesting, but the really fascinating part is their potential to be so different on a psychological level, due to the idea of collective intelligence and the interesting implications regarding individualism and personality that spring from that. It gives me plenty of ideas and questions that I hope to get a sort of insight into during play, both by interacting with characters of other races and interactions with other Dionaea, as Sea of Rocks grew up in a mostly human community and may lack certain social understanding that other Dionaea, who were in deeper contact with their kind in their early days, may have. Furthermore I find the Dionaea to be interesting on an aesthetical level and have loved them since I first started playing Space Station 13. Identify what makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a Human: First, the Dionaea are extremely different on a mechanical level. Them being able to sustain themselves on light, heat and radiation, them getting into trouble when said things are not available, them not needing a breathable atmosphere or suitable pressure to survive and their slow movement differentiate them from humans. And while these are interesting, I believe the biggest part lays in the emotional and psychological aspects that I already cut into the paragraph above. The Dionaea not being individuals in the classical, human sense, but rather a collection of beings banded together to form a greater form and the implications that arise from that as well as the potential difference in their emotional states and social behaviour. Character Name: Sea of Rocks Please provide a short backstory for this character, approximately 2 paragraphs It is not known which space-bound gestalt ejected the bunch of seeds which eventually gave birth to Sea of Rocks, but carried by solar winds a clump of spores drifted through space for quite a while before finaly entering the Uueoa-Esa-System and being caught by the thin atmosphere of Tret. Most of the seeds died quickly, or remain within seemingly endless hibernation, without any nutrition on the barren planet's surface. However, some few lucky seeds found themselves in more or less protected pockets between the rocks, where some nurishment could be found and from one of those few seeds Sea of Rocks emerged as a nymph. Wandering the barren lands the nymph could barely find any food, surviving mostly on light and whatever it could draw from the thin atmosphere. That was until it came across a mining NanoTrasen outpost. The skeleton crew of the outpost was somewhat hostile to the nymph at first, treating it as vermin, chasing it away with whatever was on hand at the time. However, due to the miners wearing heavy suits the nymph was able to keep its distance and as it watched the workers from a safe distance. Eventually the people of the outpost came to like the observant nymph and offered it small bits of food and the occasional pet. As time went by the nymph became more and more accepted into the small community and was eventually allowed inside the buildings, with the foreman of the installation taking it in as a pet of the outpost. Slowly but steadily, the nymph grew, learning the language and social behaviour, even assigning itself a gender, female, despite being asexual by nature, to fit in with the social construct of the human miners, eventually taking on the name "Sea of Rocks", inspired by the endless plane of rocky terrain which was the first thing it saw in its life. As Sea of Rocks grew into its working form it took over some mining duties, mostly carrying crates due to its lack of education. After a few years the Dionae left the planet, applied for citizenship in the Sol System, and enlisted at the Lunar University of Medical Science for a bachelor and master in psychiatry. During Sea of Rock's studies it took fondly to the concept of music and language, so it took on a few secondary courses in linguistics and musical theory, less on a professional level and more out of personal interest. It is no surprise that the Dionae implemented both music and precise language into its psychiatric practice, and being quite succesful with it, despite its personal removal from the psychological nature of its patients. Sea of Rocks believes that music can have a profound effect on the psychological state of most races and can help healing even severe trauma. It also believes that music is a natural evolution of language, citing its native language, Rootsong, and its melodic and rhythmic tendencies as a basis of the hypothesis, going as far as believing that most races will eventually take on a similar musical language in due time. After getting its masters of psychiatry Sea of Rocks applied to NanoTrasen as a psychiatrist, got accepted and has been moved around from assignment to assignment until it was sent to the Odin and Aurora as its current assignment. What do you like about this character? Sea of Rocks is a character that is driven by curiosity and patience in its quest to learn about the other races of the universe. Being driven by certain attributes is something that I really enjoy about characters, be they my own or those of others. Furthermore I like that Sea of Rocks has a history with other races that is neither overwhelmingly negative nor reduced to the two just existing in parallel. I also like Sea of Rocks' search for identity, which is something that has been part of my personal life for a long time and probably won't go away any time soon, so having a character with similar issues, without them being a self-insert, is something that I hope to learn from while playing, as playing confronts me as the player with scenarios that I probably wouldn't have thought about otherwise, and this potential of personal growth due to roleplaying is something that is very near to my heart. How would you rate your role-playing ability? 6-7/10. I'd say that I'm a decent roleplay, I certainly get into my characters quite heavily, sometimes even leaving me with a bad feeling throughout the day when I fucked up my job in-game, but I sometimes have trouble throwing myself into the thick of it. I've been trying to get into roles that allow and force me to be more social in-game and have been quite succesful doing so, but there are still many things for me to learn, especially when it comes to really showing the basic ideas behind my characters in play and through the limited tools that the game provides. It's a challenge, sure, but I feel like I'm getting better. Notes: English isn't my native language, and even though I read through this post a few times I am certain that I overlooked a few mistakes. If I did, let me know and please don't hold it against me.

I have doubts that giving these abilities to the average crewmember makes sense. There are, of course, OOC issues, but my main issue is an IC one. Mainly I believe that it would make little sense that NT would deploy a person with psionic abilities to be a janitor or even an engineer when their talents make much more sense in a more specialized field. So even if a crewmember's powers awoke during a shift, the likelyhood of them returning to the station would be very small, in my opinion. I'd find it more likely that NT would scoop them up at the Odin and train them for something psy-related. For Antags it makes sense, could be great fun, but for the average Crew I have a bad feeling about it. As for implementation: I don't know, but I though I'd give my feedback regardless. Can't complain afterwards if you say nothing early on.
