  1. Hi! I like this, but I would love to know more about Szsk's personality and how it's going to play on the Aurora specifically, given the uhh....ridiculous personalities we have. How does he deal with being in an alien culture, or have you planned that out yet?
  2. Hi! I am not worried about the lateness, please don't be sorry. I would presume some level of scorn for being female, but given her reason for the pursuit, perhaps less so once she had a chance to explain to anyone. It is not a field with direct, tangibly helpful results, so it would seem probably somewhat obtuse to others Sinta who are not of a similar mindset. Given that she did not let it effect her raising of her children, most I presume would accept it, even if it was with reservation. I don't think it does much for her clan unless she accomplishes something notable, but I (personally and as Skar) think it is an honorable pursuit for her, given she has already had four hatchlings and did well by them. Also I hadn't thought about this subject, so thank you for making me do so!
  3. Oh, yeah! I did, in fact, mean warriors. And I do have opinions for her, at least some, though for writing reasons I like to leave some smaller opinions to develop. I can answer some of these questions about her opinions right now, though. She was excited by the prospect of first contact, but was wary of what the aliens might be like. She never actually met a human or Skrell, only heard about them, until after the war. The Contact War's beginnings she was sympathetic to the Traditionalist Coalition, with a similar way of thought, though she herself didn't feel the need to speak up in war, if it could be addressed later. But as she had her loyalties set to her husband and the Hegemony, that is what she stuck with. She was much more firmly entrenched on the Hegemon's side after the nuclear exchange. The current state of the Hegemony, she is less than pleased with, privately, though of course if asked by anyone she isn't close with she will not say that at all for her Clan's sake. She also refuses to tell her children about her misgivings, in case she poisons their minds about their duties. She is very tired of the fighting at this point, with the Iron Crusade and the latest civil war. Those solidified her decision to leave and see what other species do in similar situations. She is very firmly Th'akh, as she sees no sense in the existence of a custodian for the universe, it clearly gets on well by itself. She was furious at Skrell and humans both, blaming their indelicate approach to first contact as a direct cause of the Contact War. She has mellowed out, especially after the war, though she still harbours a deep mistrust of both species as a whole. She is thus very much going to have a difficult time getting used to seeing them on a daily basis.
  4. BYOND Key: IndyCooper Character Names: -Mackenzie Jenkins -Patience Byrne -Alaina Quinn -Sabah Mrakiizar -Rosaline Saxton-Briggs -Edie Species you are applying to play: Unathi What color do you plan on making your first alien character: Sandy brown Have you read our lore section's page on this species?: Yes Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph format. One paragraph minimum per question. Why do you wish to play this specific race: Like my bent towards philosophy about existence with the IPCs, there are neat themes to explore with the Unathi. In their case, however, it is religious practises and concepts of honour and standing. This app character is the one I am mainly aiming to play, but I will eventually stretch myself into trying Guwan and priests and such once I get more comfortable. (Maybe even play a male, who knows!?) Identify what makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a Human: In a word, freedom. Humans are free to grow into whatever roles they choose for themselves, no matter what their family thinks, no matter what traditions exist in their homes. Unathi do not have that, not really. It's not only that they are bound to follow tradition and honour or be exiled, but I think it's so ingrained that even the choice to do otherwise is all but gone. It's unthinkable to do something other than honourable. A completely alien mindset from what humans grow up with. And should one actually do so, go against the grain in that way, they not only risk but almost guarantee they will be forever branded Guwan, which I don't think is a concept most human characters readily even understand. Character Name: Skarahakh Ghur'rak Please provide a short backstory for this character Skarahakh grew up under Izweski rule, in the moderately well-to-do Khraaz'nar Clan. Born in 2411 to a warrior and his wife, she grew up living well. At 16 she left to join her new husband in a town near Teht. While she grew up a traditional Sinta, she had no problems with trying to improve things like the Izweski were doing, simply had a problem with the speed and aggressiveness of the changes. This made her a perfect fit to cement an alliance with the Ghur'rak, and her husband, Thurashz, actually pleased her as well. For years, everything seemed fine. In fact, Skar was well-occupied raising three hatchlings by the time the Contact War broke out. Caught between ideologies and honour, Clan Ghur'rak was torn in two as several leaders broke from the clan to join the traditionalists. Skar and Thurashz were among those who remained loyal to Izweski. As a warrior, Skar's husband was obviously in the fighting. He fought well throughout the war, bringing much honour to the clan through victories. Sadly, he would never see the end of the war, killed in 2448 in a skirmish where his unit was outnumbered but fought to the last man standing. He left Skar and now a fourth hatchling behind. His widow resolved that her children should want for nothing, and her clan approved of her two eldest boys, now twelve, to begin training for the levies. Thankfully, the war ended a year later, without her home being wiped out like so many others. Skarahakh was not one to lay about and just raise her children off of their father's earnings, however. She attended university as soon as they re-opened, and by the time her youngest was sixteen, in 2456, had earned a masters in experimental physics. Her two eldest had joined the clan warriors, and one had been married and was expecting his first hatchlings himself. Now, in 2462, Skar's children are grown and serving the clan the way she raised them to, properly and with honour. She has also assisted with two papers on how to possibly safely terraform small sections of Moghes, though her name is not on them. Her heart is still full of sorrow at what has happened to her home planet, and, with the blessings of her Clan Elders, has left for the Republic of Biesel, semi-retired and wanting to see the some more of the universe before she dies. At fifty-one, she's looking to have her own Grand Adventure, and spirits willing it'll be a fun one. What do you like about this character? She is essentially a retired mother who has no fucks left to give except where her clan's standing and her children's well-being are concerned. She has done her duty already, and can now have fun as long as she doesn't embarrass herself. How would you rate your role-playing ability? Ehhhh. Low 7/10? Notes:
  5. Hi! Edie does still pursue literature, though without access to Schmidt's library, it is incredibly difficult for it to actually find the books. While the extranet, of course, is a source, digital copies were regarded in the household as not real, so it prefers having physical copies of bound paper, which is of course expensive, both for procurement and storage. This is most of the driving factor for Edie's continued pursuit of actual financial gain, much more so than personal freedom might be (though of course it's still in the back of the mind). As for Schmidt's passing, Edie regrets that mortality took him, but the unit maintains a pragmatic approach. Organics die, sometimes. It's unfortunate, but not something she is programmed to stop in anyway aside from contacting emergency services and possibly applying bandages. Its personal opinion, following a bit of introspection, is that this is a natural process for organics and shouldn't be interrupted except in case of violence, which is not a natural end and should be avoided and repaired. It does, however, regard the death of an owner as a personal failing, and as a caretaker model, strives now to prevent health conditions in any future owners that might lead to an untimely end.
  6. Specifically, both in physical and mental style, Schimdt....didn't necessarily enforce, but encouraged the sort of style and mannerisms typically attached to the Victorian era, as he himself thought it was the peak of human social development. True or not, it left a serious impression on Edie, so its mannerisms, dressing style, and taste in literature and philosophy is all coloured by that influence above all others.
  7. BYOND Key: IndyCooper Character Names: -Katherine Marchaire -Rosaline Saxton-Briggs -Mackenzie Jenkins -Alaina Quinn -Constance Hall -Sabah Mrakiizar Species you are applying to play: Integrated Positronic Chassis What color do you plan on making your first alien character: (exempted, apparently? Or n/a? Realistic skin tone shell, I guess.) Have you read our lore section's page on this species?: I have! Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph format. One paragraph minimum per question. Why do you wish to play this specific race: I held off on this one for a long time, even though it interested me to begin with, because I wasn't exactly sure how to go about creating a believable, lore-friendly character. With the Trinary Perfection now getting more play, and getting deeper into the lore section and thinking about it, however, I am too into it to not try. Specifically, the argument of sentience, the clash with historical tragedies, and the mysterious Frontier societies all intrigue the heck out of me. I've got lots of deeper concepts I want to play around with, but I think trying to stay calmly low-level for my first one is possibly even more intriguing, as the struggles of a working class IPC trying to buy its freedom in TC is a neat backdrop for all sorts of drama. Identify what makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a Human: The first, most glaring difference is rights, or more accurately the lack of them. The legal system alone is geared almost completely against IPCs, from freedom to punishments for “crimes” against them. Social stigma against them as living, thinking entities is also a high difference. Humans are obviously given the benefit of the doubt, as even when their intelligence is so low as to frequently have life-threatening accidents, or they commit foul and unreasonable crimes, they are still regarded as people to be treated with respect. Where-as an IPC can, even if self-owned or free, even if careful and conscientious and having never done anything wrong, be scrapped at the whims of others with barely a blink from the authorities, assuming they aren't the ones who have ordered it in the first place. Then, of course, there are the physical differences: The lack of pain; the thinking patterns caused by the differences between organic and positronic brains; the relative ease (though not cheap) of replacing almost any part aside from the brain, and even the possible customisations of appearance what owners you might have can make, including a complete chassis overhaul (of course further moving the goal of buying your freedom out of reach). But perhaps more awesome to me is the complete shift of thinking from being an emotional, messy organic creature to something logical and calculating, more-so than any sociopath could manage, yet still capable of some small form of “empathy” in regards to maintaining its precarious position without being scrapped at almost a whim. The knife-edge of danger there is not present for any other species, as far as I can tell. Character Name: Einstein TD Model E/D-437-CT custom, PSN-0054720/A; goes by the name Edie for convenience of organics. Please provide a short backstory for this character (Approximately two paragraphs) Edie was brought online early in 2458 as a custom-chassis shell for a rich, retired minor executive. He ordered it specifically as a stand-in for an older sister/babysitter who had never existed as a way to help mellow out his two rowdy grandsons, as his daughter and her husband were often too busy to manage them and “hired help” was deemed too unreliable. To achieve this, its core programming was set for childcare, cleaning and other maid duties, and education. This arrangement went quite well, at least according to her purchaser. The parents of the boys were less-than-pleased, but tolerated the shell's presence as it had been beneficial from the start. However, early 2460 saw the elder boy develop an unhealthy obsession with Edie, and, on the advice of the family therapist, the shell was sold to a family friend at cost. This family friend, one H. A. Schmidt, was somewhat sympathetic to IPC rights in general, though not going so far as being an activist. He did, however, encourage the unit to develop its own mannerisms, and also to read whatever it wished to explore in his vast private library. This arrangement suited them both quite well, but the relationship was to be cut tragically short, as he died on 19-12-2461 of heart failure. HE had not modified his will in regards to Edie, and as it turned out was rather in debt to the Tau Ceti government. As such, Edie was repossessed by NT. IT was decided through analysis that a wipe wasn't necessary, as the IPC was a perfectly serviceable service model, and it has been shipped around to various stations as a janitorial staff member since. What do you like about this character? For one, Edie's style is going to be firmly rooted in old Earth classical literature, which I think I've seen maybe one other example of before on the server in my time here? Two, its quiet demeanor and servile attitude means I get to spend any free time, instead of dealing with organic relationships, philosophising about the meaning of things ICly, something none of my other characters really have a lot of luxury (or in some cases capacity) to do. Three, I really like the idea that, while programmed to be "caring", there's a deep sort of divide between real organic affection and care and the Uncanny Valley type Edie provides and I wanna play that up as much as I can within reason. How would you rate your role-playing ability? Um. Well. I tend to be super critical. But I have played synthetics in a whole host of different settings and formats and I always like doing so. I think I could handle this. Maybe 7/10 in this case? Notes: I...don't really have anything to add until I get questioned, I guess?
  8. +1, has specifically engaged me on inter-corporate cooperation and basically we fenced linguistically on what each corporation (ZH vs NT) will be getting out of my character's employment here. 10/10.
  9. Venty is the good RPs. I know this both from like, actual hands-on experience and legends. Definite plus one I think they can lizard with the best given the opportunity.
  10. I am clearly biased, but Henry's pretty great. Charming and well balanced with a good backstory. But you already got the command whitelist so congrats!
  11. I don't know about this as a requirement, but having been on the receiving end of being new to an antag role and having to ahelp the shit out of mistakes on several occasions, It would be nice to see some scaling. Because carrying the antag side for an entire round of higher pop by yourself is intimidating af to me. That said, I am fairly newb and unrobust, so take my opinion with a grain of salt.
  12. I like the idea behind this mechanic, but without a whole lot of coding knowledge I dunno how the heck it would work. But despite the OOC reasoning behind clearing up "Visitor", the IC reasoning doesn't change much? Like, sure, you are now an off-duty engineer or whatever, but you're still here when you don't need to be? The visitor thing almost makes more sense because why would they want you to have clearance and permissions when you're not on duty? I could def see it working if you were "tappable" as being pulled on-duty in emergencies and your Head of Staff could basically toggle you to "on duty", but I dunno how realistic a thought that is.
  13. BYOND Key: IndyCooper Character Names: Mackenzie Jenkins, Katherine Marchaire, Grace Johansen(retired), Rebekah Wright(retired), Stephanie Matsushita(retired?), Bolla San-kohl(died) Species you are applying to play: Tajara What color do you plan on making your first alien character: Wheat (RGB 205, 186, 150) or something as close as I can get. Have you read our lore section's page on this species?: Been reading it over the past week or so. Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph format. One paragraph minimum per question. Why do you wish to play this specific race: I thought a LOT about which species I wanted as my first white-list. While I'm comfortable with roleplaying in GENERAL, roleplaying on SS13 is significantly harder for me because I am, even now with six months under my belt, learning bunches about how the game is even played, mechanically. As such, I didn't want my first whitelist to be something even more challenging to play than was necessary (ie: a non-mammal). Tajara feels like an okay middle ground for me to start exploring non-human play while sticking closer to my comfort zone and still expanding on my RP abilities. They feel like something I can RP without messing up, excepting the “getting experienced” mistakes I am bound to make. Aside from the above, I really like several aspects of the Tajara, including the obvious conflicts that can arise with competing ideologies inside the race. I tend to play very nice, welcoming characters, so this will be a departure for me and I look forward to having a non-contrived reason to have IC conflicts. Other aspects include the speech pattern in third person, which I accidentally start using irl upon seeing it often, and the community of players who play Tajara regularly seem excellent, as well, though my OOC interactions with people are admittedly limited in scope. Identify what makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a Human: There are the obvious biological differences, of course, including the sleep-cycle and evolutionary climate, all of which lead to subtle differences. Body language, also, is going to be extremely different, and if I am being honest probably going to be my weakest part until I get used to it. The extremity of recent civil war is also going to be pressing on any character's mind, and it kind of necessitates an avoidance of middle-ground thinking. Between revolution and religious doctrine, Tajara seem much more black-and-white in their views of right and wrong, and less compromising about them as well. Character Name: Zariyah Al'Khouri Please provide a short backstory for this character The last of three siblings, Zariyah's family was located for generations in a small town on the southern shores of the Al'manqrra Sea, M'sai serving the Zatushka Kingdom. But when the arrival of aliens first broke news on Adhomai, and the subsequent unrest began, her grandfather and his three sons swiftly decided that they would support the rebels if they could. As the Hadii turned coats, so did her family, and soon enough they were embroiled in war. Her grandfather fell within a month, and her two uncles were dead in fields by the end of the First Revolution. But her father managed to survive through the end of the war, and not only that, had found a wife, a medic in the army, who he married in 2432. While he had never been all that religious, Zariyah's mother was extremely devout in the ways of the Ma'ta'ke. They had two boys before her, but when Zariyah was born in early 2437, she was immediately the apple of both her parents eyes. This of course led to some strife with her brothers, several years older than her, but with the looming troubles in their childhood, nothing was ever serious. Like her mother, Zariyah grew up with a predilection to say her prayers to Marryam, but a noted fondness for stories about the Tajani and Paspitami'rran wound through her too much for her to ever become truly devout, unlike her family. She grew into a love of stories in general, and took up writing and reading as soon as she could, despite the teasing she got from her brothers and father, and developed a passion for poetry and the written word that she saw as sorely lacking. That, however, changed when she was just fourteen, preparing for job training and supporting the government however she could, with the death of the president in 2451. The entire family, shaken by the news, sat for days arguing. Finally, after a fierce fight, Zariyah's father and two brothers left to volunteer to fight the rebels that threatened the future of Adhomai. To the tears of her mother, Zariyah also joined to fight off threats to the only way of life she had ever known. She served well and honourably for years, though she went down to wounds shortly before the retaking of B'urr. During the months leading up to the retaking of B'urr, the lives of her father and elder brother were taken, while her younger brother was listed missing and presumed to be dead. By the time she had left the hospital, Zariyah had lost all taste for fighting, and returned home. While still vehemently pro-government, she tired of killing, instead opting to join the factory workers and help supply the front lines. Her noted intelligence and care for her comrades both in and out of military service earned her several commendations and an invitation to go to Trizar Medical School in 2460. Before she could complete her first round of education, however, with ALA forces threatening the city, she was shuttled with many other students and residents to complete her education off of Adhomai. Nanotrasen picked up her contract in a lottery draw and she has been sent to Tau Ceti to work aboard the Aurora as an intern. What do you like about this character? She is not JUST a soldier, not JUST another PRA member, she has empathy for others and a worry about her home. While she HATES the ALA, individuals might still be brought back to see Hadii's grace once again, Marryam willing. She is, however, a battle-hardened veteran and should have lots of fun tories I will eventually write further upon to both horrify and entertain her co-workers in equal measure, plus while she is CAPABLE of killing, she icly won't valid-hunt without EXTREME cause, as her ideals have changed significantly over her life. How would you rate your role-playing ability? Um. Good enough in other formats. Unsure about SS13. I know I don't LRP and I like to THINK I am capable of making my characters be realistic people. Notes: I super welcome criticism but I have really bad stagefright about this please be gentle. I DO learn.
