So just ran into a game where I didn't have the ability to bolt or electrify doors as a purged AI. can non-default AIs be given bolting and electrifying abilities again?
-
This is bullshit, and I can't believe you're still trying to peddle this opinion as fact. Bolting is useful for all manner of things. Don't pretend AI players abuse this as a matter of course. It's insulting.
-
Can't agree, at all. Bolting is not nearly as game ending as a security force with weapons on the warpath. It's ridiculous you think otherwise.
-
By this logic, having to plan around security actively hunting down the antag is nuts, and they have far more power to actively handle the situation with guns and armor. Any knowledgable player antag will be able to unbolt doors quickly. All this is, is an excuse to nerf AIs.
-
Meta wise, we don't assume someone is going to create a pirate AP upload console connected to the station for the purpose of subverting it. That being said, I would agree that a new connection should be known to the AI, since it's on their network.
-
The point of the doomfort is to keep unauthorized people out of it. AIs are expensive to produce and so are their cores, it makes perfect sense to protect that investment... and if your AI is subverted, that's a whole other problem.
-
Bolts are also used to keep the crew from harming themselves or the station. Don't try to pretend this is only used for antags. I am not, I admit. Discord doesn't appeal to me at all due to the need to maintain alt accounts if I want to appear inactive to some groups but not others. I can see that majority opinion is against me here, but I still call it unnecessary.
-
This argument can be used to justify all kinds of nerfs. If you're going to neuter the AI to give antags a buff, why stop there? IPC security officers are infamous for being completely ridiculous to fight, yet I don't see active calls to neuter them. Diona are infamous for being practically immortal. I don't see calls to neuter them. etc etc...
-
You don't want to, yet you're doing it, so that statement is moot. It's neutering the AI, no matter how you try to paint it. If you're going to neuter it, at least be honest about it.
-
Ok, so you admit you want to neuter the AI. Why?
-
So you just want to replace bolting with 'pull the fire alarm'. I don't understand why you're so hell bent on removing bolting. I can tell you right now that this is just replacing one set of 'annoyances' with another set. On top of that, it is a MAJOR PAIN IN THE ASS to do shutters sometimes as the AI, while it is simple to control click on a door.
-
After thinking on it some more... perhaps we can tie this to the code? Code Green, you get this. Code Blue and Code Red, you get full information access. That being said, this comes with a new problem; what if I come across a crew characters while monitoring hallways in dire need of help... and I just don't see them because they forgot to turn on their sensors? That screws the crew (that I'm supposed to help) and me (not being able to interact as freely)
-
I can't agree with this. Anyone with a crowbar will just force the shutters (and let's face it, it'll be the new meta to do just that for antags if this is put in), where you need to hack the doors and unbolt them currently, which is a bit more involved, and can be somewhat mitigated by shocking. I understand the reasoning behind it, but don't pretend this is somehow 'better'. It's a blatant nerf.
-
I understand this, and my responses are tempered with that in mind. Given that the majority of rounds will have the AI lawed the entire game, I understand this is what needs to be considered when doing AI reworks. That being said, do keep in mind that making the AI effectively just a hall monitor with no real power... is not fun for the player in general.... and telling me to 'use my stationbounds' isn't viable, because that relies on players actually joining as one. That being said, giving the AI a remote controlled exosuit that can stand in for stationbounds? That would help to mitigate the removal of these tools, I admit.
-
Disagree completely. You need to be able to at least interpret how to effectively apply Laws in any given situation, and that requires the ability to understand crew and their needs. The AI is not just some one trick voice activated tool. It's a complicated matrix that needs to know how to deal with crew without overreacting. There has to be an underlying personality -no matter how simple- to make decisions that keep the station stable. Some personalities are just more complicated than others. Big brother is exactly how the AI is supposed to work. The Aurora is not a democracy.
-
You're all forgetting that the AI player isn't always on the NT lawset. Characters can and do change up lawsets (or even purge them entirely) for the AI. Removing options for the AI just makes it more boring to play as one in these sort of situations. We would have even fewer tools to keep people out of our core if we were so inclined, since malf was removed. This is cutting off the nose to spite our face. If you're going to do this, at least give purged AIs these abilities back.
-
I'm willing to give this a go, at least. I can definitely see all of my characters being able to transfer over.
-
I'm completely against this approach. It assumes the AI can't process visual data, and ensures that anyone who actually roleplays as an AI will never pick it up again, because they have no way of telling who's who. Humanlike AIs will be crippled. Whitelist it if you must, but do not do this. It will ensure I never play as Rhetoric again.

Implement Clear Code Delta guidelines for AI
Zyrus replied to sonicgotnuked's topic in Rejected Policy
I thought about this... but I can't agree with you. A voted in Captain is an Interim filling in for legitimate personnel. They are not trained or briefed on the station as a proper Captain would be, and they have no loyalty implant to ensure Nanotransen interests. Objectively, a voted in Captain is inferior to a proper Captain, and I can't agree they should be informed of Omega Protocol. -

Chiming in as the Rhetoric player. I agree with this completely and see it as a good idea. -
With the new bluespace beacon being a general godsend for mining, I'd like to request that this be added to the mining module. Stationbound already get an inbuilt satchel, this would be easy to put in.

Regarding the Departmental Security Test Merge
Zyrus replied to Skull132's topic in General Announcements
All this will do is make those who want to RP with other security grab radios. There is literally no benefit to this. -
Regarding the Departmental Security Test Merge

While the rest of it I'm neutral about or supportive over... this is a terrible idea on so many levels I have to chime in. I have numerous problems with this idea which have been addressed by others... but my number one problem with this idea is simple enough; This server is all about RP. Why would you literally take away one of the most important ways for departments to communicate with each other just to reinforce 'report to their department only'? This isn't even remotely getting into all the problems around the logistics of forcing this in Dead Hour, when there's usually no Command to do code blue. -
BYOND key: Zyrus0 Character names: Adrian Holmes: Paramedic. Cypher Paiyo: Engineer Apprentice. Ezekiel Nasir: Security Officer. Tyler Sirek, Roboticist. Desmond Methews: Shaft Miner. Javier MacLean: AI/Stationbound character. Jack Carlson: Captain-potential. Jeffrey Koren: HoP-potential. How long have you been playing on Aurora?: A couple weeks now. Why do you wish to be on the whitelist?: Because I think I can do well with coordinating players and making rounds fun for the other players. Why did you come to Aurora?: I server hopped a lot during my first week, but most of them I came across had no concept of immersion or context. I'm not against killing as an antag, but I am against pure murder from the start of the round without even an attempt at a story, and Aurora seems to fit that mentality. Have you read the Aurora wiki on the head roles and qualifications you plan on playing?: I read the wiki a LOT, and still reference it for a lot of things. Have you received any administrative actions? And how serious were they? None that I'm aware of so far. Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph each. Give a definition of what you think roleplay is, and should be about: Roleplaying is a collaborative narrative experience designed for escape out of ourselves to step into the shoes of other characters for a while. This can mean many things to many people, but at it's core is fulfilling an escapist desire. The point of any of this is to have fun not being ourselves, and I think Aurora accomplishes that well enough that I want to stick around. Sometimes, we just want to play a shaft miner and keep out of the troubles of the station. Sometimes, you want to play an engineer and find solutions to problems in creative ways. What do you think the OOC purpose of a Head of Staff is, ingame?: Coordination of IC actions and consequences, and making sure things run smoothly. If there are new players, make sure they get instruction so they can integrate into the community, if possible. It's your job to make sure your department is having fun, and that players aren't left out of the loop if at all possible. What do you think the OOC responsibilities of Whitelisted players are to other players, and how would you strive to uphold them?: Ensure a round runs smoothly for your department if at all possible. Mentor new players to the best of my abilities. Give the narrative a chance to unfold without trying to shut things down with OOC knowledge. Killing has a place in stories, but mass murder because you can? Those sorts of stories tend to just devolve. That being said, it's our job to maintain crew cohesion, and deal with rogue elements who refuse to follow IC legal commands. Could you give us the gist of what is currently happening in Tau ceti and how it affected your character and their career? I've been reading the lore on the wiki slowly but steadily, and have recently participated in a couple events. I am not aware of recent history though, as there no sections for that on the wiki. Point me to a source for it, and I will be happy to read it. What roles do you plan on playing after the application is accepted? Head of Security, initially. HoP and Captain in time. Characters you intend to use for command or have created for command. Include the job they will be taking.: Ezekiel Nasir for Head of Security. Eventually Jeffrey Koren for Head of Personnel. Jack Carlson for Captain once I am settled into the server and game to a point where I'm comfortable with taking the position. How would you rate your own roleplaying?: I've been roleplaying on and off in various mediums, games, and tabletops for about fifteen years now. I've run tabletops, played as a character on tabletops, and played on persistent roleplay servers in the past for years without serious issues (excepting the trolls that just try to burn everything around them). So far this server seems fairly stable, and I am happy to bring my own experiences and time to making a fun collaberative experience for both myself and others. In short, I think my roleplaying is fairly good, once I've settled to a new place. Do you understand your whitelist is not permanent, and may be stripped following continuous administrative action? I am very aware, and would expect such if I screw up badly. I am not perfect. I'm a fast learner, but I am not perfect. Have you familiarize yourself with the wiki pages for the command roles? I've read them. I'm fairly good about communication, so I think I'd do well with it. Extra notes: I'm weeks old to Byond and SS13 in general, but I bring a wealth of experience from other mediums and I'm a quick learner. Please, I'd love a chance to prove I'm worth trusting. I have no interest in the Captainship until I've had enough time to have a good understanding of all the departments. Probably about a month for that. I do believe I can handle HoP and HoS now, though.
