Theplahunters unban appeal (An actual serious one.)
Frances replied to Theplahunter's topic in Unban Requests Archive
Honestly? I don't know anymore. I still feel very wary of having you back on (and you have to learn sometimes you shouldn't make jokes at the expense of others, especially with people who aren't your friends or don't know you well), but if you can actually argue yourself maturely and responsibly on here, well, it's all in your favor. Anyway, the final decision is up to the staff. If you don't get unbanned, and still maintain the same outlook, I'd recommend coming back in a few weeks or months and giving it another try. Best of luck. -
Theplahunters unban appeal (An actual serious one.)
Frances replied to Theplahunter's topic in Unban Requests Archive
I'm honestly still against this appeal. You've had plenty of time to think about all that you've done. You returned yesterday with the exact same hostility that saw you gone, and are hoping to apologize with a 24-hour change of heart. If you're so quick to change your mind, what sort of guarantee do we have that you won't change it again, and go back to your previous ways as soon as you are unbanned? Maybe if you can stick to the same story for a few weeks or months. But as things stand right now, you have very little ground to make apologies and promises on. -
I could honestly see this as a neat labcoat variant, that could be added into doctor and scientist wardrobes. Of course, if you want to keep it as a custom item, though...

I like how according to this thread, the average Aurora player is a white, male, 16 to 20 naked stoner (sometimes wearing a bathrobe).
-
Well, alright. That makes me question why modkits were ever removed in the first place.
-
I'm a bit curious as to why that is, but all the reasons I can think of why modkits could be bad would also apply to having several variants of the detective's gun. Well, what's Skull's input?

Theplahunters unban appeal (teamspeak and server)
Frances replied to Theplahunter's topic in Unban Requests Archive
This is quite honestly one of the worst ban appeals I've seen (that weren't outright troll posts). The very first thing you do is contest everyone's posts in an extremely rude and confrontational way, which is pretty much the reason why you were banned in the first place. This does absolutely nothing to show that you've changed or improved at all. -
I think one very important thing we have to draw from that, if we're looking to understand why the Aurora's environment is the way it is, is that people will roleplay what they want to roleplay. Realistically, like in most workplaces (save for a few exceptions), you'd have a pretty diverse age cast ranging from young interns or newcomers, to middle-aged people, to older, experienced workers, all in relatively equal proportions. Yet the Aurora is 60-70% young people, because our playerbase is mostly teenagers and young adults, and these are the characters we relate the most to. For the same reason, it's difficult to relate to racism, especially when all of the alien races haven't been presented as doing anything bad for humanity, lore-wise. One way to push for racism would be for the lore team to present sensible and semi-believable anti-xeno propaganda, but save for that, it's very obvious that if your character is being racist, they're a dick. And some people roleplay dickish characters for fun, to add color to the world, or for the sake of balance/conflict generation. (Which I find really admirable.) But right now, it's sort of difficult if not unappealing to be racist, and the only reason why people would roleplay a racist is for the sake of diversity, or to stay true to realistic human behaviors. Which is not the main priority of most players on this server (and that's okay!) Just a short blurb on why racism isn't exactly how we would realistically expect it to be.

There is a character (Leo Wyatt, I think) who has a revolver modkit as part of their custom item kit. The gun isn't really "unique" if you can choose from 2-3 options. If a detective wants to have their unique gun, they could simply put in a custom item app for it. I'm not sure if there would be enough demand to come up with an entire update for the gun, otherwise.

Take your time! I'm happy to hear that you're working on it, playing minecraft again is gonna be lots of fun. Looking forward to it!

About Mistakes, and a Note of Passing
Frances replied to Covert0ddity's topic in Off Topic Discussion
You know what sucks the most about this? You weren't a complete shitter. Despite all your flaws, you still remained a very enjoyable person to be with, both on a personal and administrative level. I hope these flaws don't keep holding back your best, because I think people were always ready (and still will be, I hope) to move past them with you. Maybe the sad truth here is that fully recognizing and admitting your mistakes doesn't even guarantee you you'll succeed in fixing them. But it's the first step. -Fran -
Double shifts?

The station being blown up by anything more than small breaches is rarely if ever canon, as it tends to be due to antags. If people really insist on keeping large damage to the station canon (for example the Vira de Santos arrivals bomb), it could simply be handweaved as having happened at a different time in the continuity of the timeline. I don't think the station would be repaired within a day, either. Yet we can ignore that just fine already.
-
I believe it can and will be discussed. Now that the issue has been brought to the attention of the staff, we simply need to wait to hear from Skull again. As for the thread, the easiest way to show it's gone past its purpose is to not post on it and let it die slowly.

So wait, is this his personal drinking flask? (Not a flask, but you understand the effect). Because I don't think NT would allow anyone to bring alcohol on station (nor should custom items have to be smuggled, generally). The only way I can see this is if your character is a bartender, and they'd keep the flask into the bar. (In which case we'd care less about the concept of the bottle being carried to work every day or not, that can be handweaved in as something else). Edit: I don't know your character, but your OP seems to heavily imply he is a bartender. I've got no issue with a bartender character having a custom bottle of alcohol. That seems reasonable, no?

So wait, you say you left the nuke unarmed, at the same time the shuttle was called? Why did it detonate, in this case? Anyway, I can provide a perspective from the side of security this round. There were two active officers, and I, the warden. The bridge blowing up separated the brig from the rest of the station, so we spent a while getting hardsuits from EVA, so we could leave. After that, we went to cargo to order additional hardsuits (and shotguns because the officer with me wanted one for some reason), and tried to get them to our last officer who was protecting medbay. This was about 1h in. At this point, you broke into the brig, which the AI informed us of. Figuring you were just raiding the armory (which woulda made sense ICly), and being under-equipped and not even having a full team, I did not want to investigate the brig, although shotgun officer rushed towards it alone, forcing me to follow him. We managed to save all of the armory's contents, and started to leave the brig. Everything happened really quickly after that. In under a minute, the AI informed us there was a nuke, called the emergency shuttle, then the nuke blew up. We went from not knowing what the ops wanted or were planning to do (except ask us a silly riddle) to the station being destroyed and the round ending. Was the station sorta dumb for brushing off the nuke ops over the comms? Sorta. Were you justified in detonating the nuke? Not really, imo. Lack of communication or coordination made it difficult to organize, but the nuke's presence should really have been revealed a long time before it was blown up. This would've prevented the crew from being as dismissive, and if you can't get your teammates to speak for you over comms, you can always speak for yourself. Something else I don't understand - both you and Josh were mods. If you saw he was unresponsive to you most of the time, but still speaking on comms, wouldn't it be preferable to try to contact him on Msay, or via admin PMs?

People that are planning to stay for multiple shifts would simply stay on station. Instead of being an "everybody get out", the transfer shuttle is simply a shuttle that ferries people whose shifts have ended.

Summary: Synchronize the Station Time clock to the server clock, instead of the round clock. Description: One thing I never liked about our server is that although we're working to create a persistent universe, the same round repeats 6-7 times per day. And while it's easy to handweave that, RP-wise, I always thought it would be a cool addition if we could actually get the sense that time is relevant, rather than having every round start at 12:00 and play out the events of an afternoon. You could actually have timed breaks, timed events, stuff like everyone meeting for lunch at noon or slowly coming in in the mornings and sleepily grabbing breakfast at the kitchen. Working during dead hour would actually have the "feel" of running a night shift on the Aurora, rather than just being on a particularly empty day shift. People who play during certain timezones would actually have characters working the same "shift" every day, instead of simply coming up certain days (for example, you'd know character X. usually works starting at 7:00 PM station time, instead of coming every few fictional "days".) How easy it is to implement: Since we already have stationtime and roundtime as two separate counters, it should be fairly easy to change the stationtime variable if we can extract the server time somehow. The only possible challenge I can see would be if any events worked on stationtime rather than roundtime, such as book checkout timers or idk what else. Any of those would have to be recoded which *could* be quite a hassle. How big of a change it would be: Pretty big, though it depends how much people are willing to roleplay it. Generally, I've seen the community adapt very easily to these changes - it'd be nice to have the chef serve different food depending on the time of day, people having meetups in the bar in the late evening, and being able to work an actual night shift.

BYOND Key: FFrances Player Byond Key: Valkrae Reason for complaint: Cutting the round short, failing to create a satisfying roleplay situation for the crew Approximate Date/Time: 16-APR-2015, approx. 1:30AM EST. First of all, this complaint is a follow up to this: http://aurorastation.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=39&t=2065 Two days ago, there was a nuke round where the nuke was detonated very shortly into the round (roughly 1h20 in). In my previous complaint, I mentioned that the AI, NTAI-X, called the emergency shuttle after discovering an active nuke, which caused the ops to detonate said nuke in retaliation. I later found out this was not what happened. What happened: Basically, the situation, as reported by Josh1133 (the nuke op that was talking on radio), was that two of the nuke ops died very early into the round due to terrible luck (one flew into space, one died to a mystery virus). The two remaining ops (I think?), Josh and Valkrae, set out to finish their villainous mission. They planted a bomb in the captain's quarters, which blew up the bridge, and everything after that gets a bit fuzzy. Basically, what Josh told me was that he kept taunting the crew for a while after that, not sure what the full plan was. Meanwhile, Valkrae, taking the nuke disc, stealthily moved the nuke to the brig, and set it to detonate. Josh himself only learned of this plan as Valkrae's op yelled at him to leave the station because the nuke was going to blow. Why I'm not okay with it: Based on that report (as well as what most of us were able to observe in-game), Valkrae essentially went for the nuke without informing anyone (including the other nuke op) of his plan. No one was given a chance to understand what was happening, and since the crew isn't allowed to meta, it's very easy to stealth-nuke the station, especially if there's no command staff on, without anyone realizing anything. This results in a round ending after an hour, with no one understanding what happened. I suppose for now I'd like to hear Valkrae's reasoning for detonating the nuke, as it seems it wasn't done as retaliation for a shuttle being called, but simply because the ops could blow it up.

Because A happens, does not necessarily mean B will happen as well. A large thread like this is an indicating factor there likely is tangible evidence. However, we cannot simply assume there is without verifying, because it's a player's reputation and ability to play that's at stake here.

There is more complexity to that side than this. While I do think Sue is receiving undue hate (from people that are not fact-checking their accusations, for example), the core of the issue is that I believe Ana has the right to act that way as a character, while others disagree. The problem here is that what will offend someone or not is very subjective. This is the reason why the rule was left as vague as possible, though people seem to be disagreeing on how to enforce it.

Complaint - Draculabot, Krypton_Osmium - Nuke
Frances replied to a topic in Complaints Boards Archive
I don't really find a problem with either of the two bombing incidents. In the first, all of the station's heads decided to chase the nuke ops together for some reason, and they ended up getting caught in the blast of a bomb (which was honestly a hilarious turn of events). But the point of nuke is pretty much to cause chaos and mayhem in an interesting way, and blowing up a bomb that manages to kill/harm all heads at once does pretty much that. The second bomb everybody had pretty much been warned about, and as one of the doctors working in medbay at the time I clearly understood somebody say that the IPC had a bomb somewhere on him/her. I do not understand why they were dragged into a room full of people including all of the recently cloned heads (though it did happen pretty fast so I don't want to hold anyone at fault), but I really can't blame them for wanting to seize that opportunity. All in all, some very unlucky heads got collectively blown up twice, but... isn't this sort of what nuke is about? -
I'm mostly wondering how to make this from a coding perspective. Because I think you can only ban by job, and what you're suggesting is simply a title for the same job, and I don't think there's any way to restrict those for now. And we don't want to make the joblist any longer than it already is, so... bleh. I dunno. Anyway, I think it would be a minor but good addition. There's already a list of in-universe job titles, complete with qualifications for advancement, if that can be of any help to you: http://aurorastation.org/wiki/index.php?title=NanoTrasen_Occupation_Qualifications

Just to clarify this, I am not defending Sue as much as I am defending certain injustices which I believe are being committed against her. From people resorting to fallacious arguments, to ignoring completely the points she attempts to bring up, or trying to blame things on her that she has never actually been held accountable for. I do not agree with everything Sue says (as you can see even in this thread - the recent attack against Crescentise was uncalled for imo), but my current stance on the big underlying issue of "what should people like Sue be doing or not" is "I don't fukken know anymore". I have a general idea of what I would like to see or not see as player behavior (and, spoiler alert, it does favor IC aggressors and troublemakers), but I realize that the issue is such an unclear and undiscussed one at the moment that I'd rather wait for a full debate to come along before making up my mind for good. I'm also not looking to shove my views down anyone's throat.

BYOND Key: FFrances Character Names: (Some of these are old) Ajira Srad'maar, Ajna An'rakharr, Alee'sa Kashirrta-el-Ebek, Alice Wilson, Adrian Escurdado, Buck Dunneroo, Eliya Kha'ssad, Eric Humphreys, Fran Naomi, Hee'ru Jalamak, Olivia Ingigneri, Observer, Peter Okereke, Phyllis Grayson, Raphael Manson, Wadiy Shey'filqqi, some others that I probably forgot. How long have you been playing on Aurora: A year. Species you are applying to play: Skrell What color do you plan on making your first alien character (Dionaea & IPCs exempt): Skull's current chat color. Have you read our lore section's page on this species?: Yeah. I think it's undergoing a rework, though. Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph format. One paragraph minimum per question Why do you wish to play this specific race: Skrell appeal to me because they tend to act in a cold, calculative manner, and value highly logic and organization. However, they are still emotional creatures, who feel alienated due to vast biological and social differences between them and other races. I can relate a lot to them for that. Despite playing a lot of casual characters, my own personality ends up reflecting a lot in my characters as they are often aloof and detached without necessarily wanting to be - I believe a Skrell character would be a good fit to my playstyle for this reason. We also don't have a lot of Skrell. I'd like to see more. Identify what makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a Human: As I stated above, most Skrell fit the stereotype of the "distant, superintelligent but cold" alien. There *is* a hidden depth behind it, which is that Skrell can be very personable (which most players might not know due to not everyone reading all of our lore), although the hidden facets of their personalities will mostly be observed when they are in the company of their own race, and not with others. Skrells also have some of the tightest bonds with humans due to a longer history of positive cooperation, though some racial tensions exist outside of NT and Sol space due to human xenophobia. Character Name: Tardraxpal Tasyraaatlyss (couldn't find a clear naming convention for Skrell, so I looked at names of characters from other apps. Let me know if this needs to be changed.) Please provide a short backstory for this character, approximately 2 paragraphs Born on Qerrbalak some 40 years ago, Tardraxpal Tasyraaatlyss is a relatively young Skrell. Although both of her parents were simple technicians, she manifested a marked interest for learning and introspection at a young age, which caused her to pursue studies in the medical field in the hopes of one day becoming one of the most prominent medical researchers of the Skrell race. It is after an excellent track record acquired over more than a decade of working at various clinics and institutes across Qerrbalak that Tardraxpal came to the attention of NanoTrasen. Accepting without hesitation the offer of the prestigious corporation, Tardraxpal set out for the stars, where she would now study the effects of deep-space acclimatization on various alien bodies. What do you like about this character? Hard to say as I haven't played her, but one of the themes I'm really looking forward to play with is the one of feeling alienated and cast away due to not being able to communicate properly. Skrell look a bit ridiculous, and even though they're super smart I always thought they were funny and took them less seriously than other races (plus a lot of them are supposed to have lisps or enunciation problems due to the anatomy of their mouth). Having to deal with that from the other side will be fun. Another thing which sorta bothers me as a frequent Tajaran player is the hypersocial mindset of the Tajaran race (the moment two Tajarans see each other they're immediately expected to become friend because the race is about sticking together so much). There's very few Skrells in comparison, and I'm assuming interactions between them to be a lot colder even if they're able to share emotions. So that'll be refreshing. How would you rate your role-playing ability? 7/77 Notes:
