  1. But you hit the nail on the head. This is really all it is. I don't have an artistic background, so I pull my stuff from the RPGs that I play in (Which I guess is limited acting, but then again so is writing a book when you really tear down the boundary).
  2. I wish I had the money to buy awesome games. I have a huge game list. I'm Xelnagahutner on steam as well if anyone wants to add me, we can then simply look at games we have in common to find playable things.
  3. I come from a community of free-form roleplaying where we don't have the guidelines of a single setting or style to create a character in. Many of us took aspects of ourselves and worked with it. It was also there that I learned that I don't play outside of my gender and/or sexual preference well. My wife (whom I met on said RP site) plays males quite well however. It's simple preference and ease of play. Lets look at "self-inserting" now. You are always going to be you. you will think like you and respond like you. When you have time to think about the actions then you can put some distance between you and the character by doing things you might normally not. This doesn't mean you've thought of a different method, you've simply chosen the method you normally wouldn't. Another person might actually see a different way of going about things than you possibly could have. This is how you can't avoid putting yourself into something. ME for example. I'm a kind hearted giver. I am more than willing to help people I don't even like because that's who I am. But I have an inner rage that hates EVERYTHING. I can RP a really nice person and a very angry guy. Those are typically my options. I can see the shades of grey so I can play them, kinda. If an emergency hits, I lose my ability to use the grey area. I'm either kind or angsty. To a small extent you can't really escape who you are because you always think like you. The best way to make varying characters is to change what little you can, but across many different aspects. Now I want to look at character attachment. I play tabletop RPGs on the daily. And yes they are the "main characters" of the story so they get to be allowed a different level of bias for this, but it should still pan out. I get attached to whatever I'm playing so long as I enjoy it. I don't want my character to die. I don't want the party to make a decision I disagree with. And a surely don't want any other malicious things taking me out of the game, even temporarily. I care about my character. I love my character. And yes, I use my character to escape the real world around me. If I die, am I going to cry and throw a fit? Nope. It's a part of a GAME. I understand some people have a hard time seperating RPGs from reality when they get invested, but that is where the problem lies. It's in an individual being unable to seperate their mind into game vs reality. If that's true then it's not a matter of self-insertion = overly attached players. It's an issue of overly attached people playing RPGs, which you can't really stop.
  4. Message from "Qwerty": Hi! I see you're a former AI as well. What is it like adapting to your position as crew after being instilled with the AI laws for so long? If the company asked, would you go back to an AI core to assist? And I'm curious as to what kind of learning we need to go through for various heads of staff positions. I'm still new to my chassis and I'm trying to get used to being crew.
  5. Xel Carin: Security Cadet with a focus on learning forensics and detective work. Vel Carin: Assistant level employee. He's been given time to bounce from area to area to figure out what he wants to do the most before the company helps him with school tuition and gets him educated, so he does a bit of everything. Qwerty: I consider this AI one of my characters. It's vibrant, friendly (even while rogue), and helpful. It comes across as naive from time to time and doesn't know much about the physical work aspect of running the station. It serves as various models of android in the station from time to time as the uploading minds see fit, but never learns a whole lot during the shift it seems. (update. Qwerty has an IPC now and uses it frequently. He has entered an agreement to still AI for the station if it is needed.)
  6. I threw together an edit to add a small snipet to the notes section. Killerhurtz, I'm glad you think highly of my AI especially since I've only been on the game for a little over 2 months. Thank you for the support.
  7. BYOND Key:Xelnagahunter Character Names:Xel Carin, Vel Carin, Qwerty (AI/Cyborg) Species you are applying to play: IPC What color do you plan on making your first alien character (Dionaea & IPCs exempt): Have you read our lore section's page on this species?: I've read everything I can find. Your lore section seems kinda of lacking on IPC lore, if there are things I'm overlooking please point me in the proper direction. I have been all over BayStation12's wiki though. Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph format. One paragraph minimum per question Why do you wish to play this specific race: I'm very interested in playing synthetics. I have the idea to retire my existing AI, this would have him being given an IPC for a body and getting "freed." This is pretty much my sole concept though in time I might have even more reason to play IPCs. Filling in this role will allow me to finally play a synthetic that isn't bound to the AI laws and isn't strictly an antag. Identify what makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a Human: The synthetic nature of the IPC gives it strange outlooks on things. Those outlooks apply various quirks, from lack of proper emotions, to strange commentary. Those quirks make for fun role play opportunity. Personality is what the major,non-physical, difference is for me and it's what I intend to use to make my IPC unique as possible. Character Name: Qwerty Please provide a short backstory for this character, approximately 2 paragraphsQwerty was designed as an AI unit several years ago and installed into various stations depending upon shift needs and station familiarity. It has served NanoTrasen in 15 different stations and on several large transport vessels. It's age is becoming a concern though, being one of the oldest machines in this current generation some of the AI techs have began to see it growing beyond what they wanted in the way of personality. Its time to retire it. Moving forward, the plan is to integrate the AI's memories into the posibrain and to simply give it the Chassis. Qwerty has already been spoken to about this and has voulenteered to become a member of the NSS Aurora's (the station on which it spend it's last bit of time as an AI) crew to continue to further that station's agenda. This time it simply has the right to do so without governing laws and while getting paid. What do you like about this character? It is an AI that lives to serve the crew. Even after having the laws removed, it will still have a hard time recalling that it isn't in an AI core or in an Android any longer and will act as though it still were. Qwerty has a friendly attitude and does it's very best to get along with everyone. Which could also be it's biggest downfall. How would you rate your role-playing ability? Having a past in role-playing, from free-form to tabletop, I'd say I'm good. Considering that I'm still getting used to SS13 and the Aurora all together: 5 or 6 out of 10? Notes: I'm not the greatest player in the world for the game. There are many aspects of every occupation that I don't know, Indeed I'm barely an apprentice in each department. Any feed back, criticisms, or hints would be helpful. Thanks a bunch.
  8. That's awesome! Thank you for the information! I encourage more people to give me what you know, just in case the item linked above isn't cannonized yet. I'm loving the learning curve.
  9. I might have missed something but I'm really looking for EVERYTHING I can find for IPCs. I've found 2 seperate Bay Station 12 links that both have the same general information about them in differing formats. Those are, at least, partially incorrect though. I've noted that IPCs on Aurora can be heads of staff, where the Bay Station wiki says otherwise. The Aurora wiki page on IPCs is incomplete and has TBA in all of the sections. I'd like to apply for a whitelist, but want all the info I can gather. In particular I'm interested in an AI of mine being retired into an IPC is that is functionally possible, hence where more information is needed. I understand the use of a positronic brain isn't standard in an AI unit, but is it possible to transfer that data, or is there another internal memory source that can be used by IPCs?
