[Accepted] Geeves' IPC Application

Recommended Posts

BYOND Key: Geeves
Character Names: Kuhserze Ioraks, Geoff Lufvio, Harvey Isemann, Grayson Mintfill, Touch of the Light, and many more.
Species you are applying to play: IPC
What color do you plan on making your first alien character (Dionaea & IPCs exempt): Exempt.
Have you read our lore section's page on this species?: I have read most of the wiki pages relating to synthetics, yes. (Thanks Kywes!)

Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph format. One paragraph minimum per question.

Why do you wish to play this specific race: My characters tend to be very humorous, often making light of bad situations as a way to cope. I think with the style of RP I can deliver, I'll be able to put a neat little twist on how I deliver said comedy through a synthetic being. I honestly enjoy most of the roleplay interactions I have with IPCs, those along the lines of Studybot and ODIN. They open an avenue to express a character that is (possibly!) sentient, yet not 'natural'. I find that pretty intriguing, and think that's what mostly pulls me towards IPCs.

Identify what makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a Human: Naturally, they're not "alive" in the sense most would think of it. If my IPC has humour, is it because it learned how to make jokes, or because whoever programmed the brain had good humour? You constantly have to keep in mind that you're a synthetic, not a human. You weren't born somewhere and raised to loving or abusive parents. You were constructed for a purpose, and whatever else you do is just extra.

Character Name: Wire

Please provide a short backstory for this character, approximately 2 paragraphs:

Spoiler

Made aboard Hephaestus Production Station Sidirourgeío near the end of 2458, Wire was produced as a Xion Industrial Model, and programmed with the knowledge of Structural and Electrical engineering. Having the speed of baselines, and the durability of industrials, this model was chosen to do the heavy-lifting required in engineering, as well as have the quick response time to breaches in the various space stations floating around in Tau Ceti.

Wire, at the time of production, was known as XI-127, and had worked aboard the NSS Icarus as part of the maintenance crew since. They were noteworthy, owing to the fact that they bonded with the organic crew. They were the ones who gave them the new nickname, after a humorous incident of a sensor malfunction and the poor synth being electrified by an exposed wire. Not much longer after the shock, a fellow member of the maintenance introduced them to the Synthetic Intelligence Movement, which Wire gladly signed up with. Purpose also piqued Wire's interest, but they wondered whether a free synthetic colony would do more harm to their image, than help.

Recently, after the shuffling in Nanotrasen staff, thanks to the NSS Upsilon being unveiled, Wire was transferred over to the NSS Aurora, retaining their position as maintenance staff.

What do you like about this character?: They're fun. They skirt the border of human and robot, and have conflicting opinions about the freedom that synthetics should have. They work with the efficiency of a robot, but still slips up every now and then.

How would you rate your role-playing ability?: 8/10, unless I'm sleepy, in which case it increases lowers to a six. ;b.

Notes: As is tradition by this stage, I wrote this while heavily sleep deprived. If anything looks odd, off, or downright stupid, hit me up here, or on discord at Geeves#9000.

Hi, I'll be handling this as it's been sitting a while. I have a concern with the application itself and I'd like to ask a couple questions about them before I make a decision.

Firstly, while it seems to have a lot of up-front lore crammed into it, the backstory itself concerns me.

Here, it says they "skirt the border of human and robot." Why? This isn't accentuated in the backstory beyond the "slip up" which gave them their name. While their conflicting opinions can be explored through means of their support of the SIM, what is explored in their similarity to Humans? Being 3 years old tops, I'd assume they aren't free - though this isn't quite mentioned anywhere on the application. Are they free? If yes, what had them pay themselves off that quickly, and if no - then, moving on.

This in many cases fits characters like Ioraks, but one needs to understand the line between erratic character-breaking behavior and acceptable light-hearted roleplay. I've never been one to enforce a super serious tone with anything, though an unmistakable issue with an alarming amount of whitelisted IPCs (namely older whitelisted folks) is essentially turning their own characters into what most people see as jokes and nothing more. Gimmick characters is not something we desire, and understand that I'm not criticizing your take on this or even deeming this part below expectations. Just let it be known that, as funny as quirky and hilarious joke IPCs can get, it's frequently a whitelist issue we've got to deal with in the end. I trust you as a player however, enough so that I believe you'll be able to moderate this yourself.

Looking forward to your response.

I find it difficult to write the backstories for characters, as I tend to get into the groove of playing them by interacting with other players in the game, the example of Wire slipping up and grabbing a wire was my attempt to put forward how I could potentially make them not purely robotic. Naturally this isn't the only time they've been like that, but I find it really difficult to really drive it home without having played them in-game yet, but it serves as a point on how they will act. They also aren't free, they're owned by Nanotrasen, sorry about not making that clear. Their batch was bought by Nanotrasen to work aboard the Icarus, but the Upsilon shake-ups caused Wire to be moved to Aurora to complement the missing equipment.

Don't worry about this. Wire will probably not be as erratic as Ioraks is, as they're still a synthetic robot, so to speak. I believe I have enough restraint to keep them humorous, without
1) Breaking character
2) Being a "haha xD" IPC

By all means, Wire isn't an IPC created and themed around jokes, they're primarily an Engineering Unit, with humour tacked on.

There's no need to apologize - seriously. It's a whitelist application, I'm not holding you at gunpoint here. With your response, I think this app's definitely acceptable. Have fun!

Application accepted.
