New Engineering Job: Network Administrator

Network Administrators would have the following responsibilities:

Managing, fixing, and maintaining telecommunication servers. They would be repairing any equipment failures, monitoring the coolant levels in telecoms, helping engineering fix breaches, and using NTSL2 for telecommunication scripts.

Managing, fixing, and maintaining PDA servers. They would be managing problems like blocking PDA spam, providing PDA logs to security, and tracking PDA viruses.

Managing, fixing, and maintaining NTNet servers, such as chatrooms, news, and other things. They would be the only ones with the power to block news articles on request of security, and have the power to delete them.

There would only be one slot of this job. This is for people who wish to learn more about telecommunications, NTSL 2, and some other features without having to be the Chief Engineer. Currently, the Chief Engineer is the only one who has access to telecomms which just seems silly.

RD and captain, too. But that's not helping. I like the job. Would make the entire area not so antag focused and maybe give us more than three people who can repair and rebuild that place. But the Issue of total comms monitoring needs to be addressed. Don't want to hand that to just anyone tbh.

The only way to prevent any sort of griefing or shit behavior is to bwoink players for OOC transgressions (powergaming, griefing) and punish players for IC transgressions (violating privacy laws and regulations as non antag, meming). I mean janitor has near all-access and can cause a lot of issues and people who abuse that all access have been bwoinked about it.

Like when you think about it, it's kind of like AI where there is a lot that can go wrong if a bad player chooses it, but it's dealt with when it happens.

PDA logs are private, and no one is permitted to monitor them without a warrant for a specific person, and only then they can only get the logs from said person. I feel that having a job with a decent portion on their job to be monitoring the pda logs makes the semi-secrecy of pdam nonexistent. (yes ais can sometimes see a message, but only fragments and entirely random).

I think it is appropriate to treat such a role as AI is treated, with bwoinks when necessary, as Burger says. I imagine such a role will be immensely boring for people if they don't enjoy learning the scripting language, but it will be very good for those who actually wants to learn it and those who can see the different opportunities for antags and non-antags alike.

It has a strong potential for antags to have fun with, and for other people to botch up, but so does atmos and AI, this will just be noticed a bit faster.

PDA messaging is, if I recall correctly, blocked behind a monitor code in the RD's office. If we can simply keep access to the logs behind this, but enable other administration tasks without it, then privacy would be ensured until the code is released (or an antag gets a hold of it some other way). And if I am wrong, then that might still be a solution.

I think we should explore it some more, it is an interesting idea and one I would personally like to try out, rather than begging for access from the captain to do the same thing.

Afaik PDA logs are in the server room and the RD can watch them whenever they want. It would be radio logs that pop up. You can pick the command channel and just have every log written out to you. I have as an antag changed the translation of languages to force people to only speak sol on common and it was pure cancer. So yeah, it would require  a lot of monitoring from command and staff but I'd be  down to give it a try.

I could have sworn job like this used to exist a long fucking time ago, I wasn't around to know why it was removed (if it existed) but I heard it could be fairly boring. I'm not against seeing the return of such a concept; though I'd be wary of how easily it can be abused, yet at the same time a lot of jobs have easy access to that area and I rarely see it targeted by griffons.
