Sprinting Into People Knocks You Both Over

A method of takedown that deals no damage and takes no equipment to do, but also doesn't give you the advantage of an instant pin or grapple because you fall over as well. Primarily for cutting off someone that is fleeing and giving time for backup to arrive, but also an obstacle for sprinting carelessly. It could deal some damage, but not more than a bruise or nothing at all. It could be balanced in a number of ways, and I will present some ideas that could work. It is also somewhat realistic, and presents a real factor to sprinting around in hallways with disregard for others. This is not a method of combat disarm. It would take a third person to approach either of the fallen people to attempt pinning or grappling.

  • You could make it so that depending on the armor they're both wearing, it could be impossible to knock them over. If you're weighed down in a big suit of armor and someone else isn't, they could just fall over instead. If you're both in heavy armor, you are both knocked over. For balance purposes, however, this could not be done.
  • You could make it take a certain amount of sprinting(3-5 seconds) before the knockdown is applied to both of you on touch, to avoid it being something someone can do at the very beginning of a fight. Turning the button on and waiting shouldn't do the same thing. You should have to actually run to gain momentum. This helps prevent accidental or annoying knockdowns when two people are trying to pass each other in the hall, as you normally have to stop and plot a path around them, giving time for a reset.
  • Race COULD be a factor, making larger and bulkier races better at dealing with smaller ones bumping into them. But, perhaps not. An m'sai may be able to catch up to an unathi, but that may not mean a guaranteed tackle is going to occur.

Would be cool to see someone sprinting around actually just bumping into people accidentally and knocking both back dropping whatever they had on their hand unless the one being bumped was on harm intent.

I feel like this would create a dynamic of kamikaze tactics where security beats any non-group antag by one of them charging into them while the others pile on the knocked over antag after.  It would make unathi security officers horrendous to go against, because their lunge speed is so fast you would have almost no time to react to their charge.

Cultists or mercs/raiders could use the same cheese tactics to capture important targets.

A "ready / defensive" stance could solve that. Like being on disharm intend only knocks down the one rushing you for example. Could create some interesting situations. Would be very interested in a test of this idea.

Maybe have it drain some stamina so it's not a 100% perfect block every time?

Isn't this just a new form of the fabled suicide baton rush from the olden days.

It doesn't have to be, you know. I'm sure this concept could be balanced somehow. Like if you were to knock into someone and both of you fall over, you could scatter apart a few tiles? Or you could counter their push so that they're the only one falling over? I like the ideas for stamina drain and ready stances.
