Butterrobber202 Posted August 25, 2020 Posted August 25, 2020 (prefacing by saying this would pretty much need unanimous lore dev approval to add, as they would be in charge of introducing the point values.) at the moment the language system works on slots limited to a list each race gets. The whole reason I want to add this because it steamlines unique scenarios so we wouldn't ever have to go by a case-by-case ruling. I think a cooler system that would cover more scenarios would be changing it a point buy system based on a variety of things. A race's standard languages would be extremely cheap on the point system while widely used galactic languages (tradeband, gutter) would also be pretty cheap. Also, based on one's citizenship some languages should be easier to learn due to accessibility. A language a race usually wouldn't have access to would be very expensive but atleast it would be possible to have them. And I do acknowledge some languages would be impossible to speak or even learn due to biological limitations of some races. Here's an example on how I think the calculations should go. Spoiler Human: Tim Cheeseburger is a Human, Age 30 Base Value, 10 Human +0 Age +3 Sol Alliance +Sol Common, -2 points List: Tradeband, 3 points Gutter, 3 points Sign Langauge, 2 pointsAlien Langauge, 6 points obviously different races and different citizenships get different prices. Like Skrell would probably have a easy time knowing multiple languages due to their age. anyways, this was just a spitball idea I had, feedback welcome and changes wanted.
Roostercat Posted August 25, 2020 Posted August 25, 2020 From what I remember, the problem with humans having alien races is that humans literally cannot produce the right sounds, or understand them. Or do any body language required like that one tajaran language I forget the name of.

This in particular has always made me want a form of 'read-only language knowledge', for those who could learn a language but wouldn't be physically capable of speaking it.
