RhinoKing Posted October 10, 2020 Posted October 10, 2020 BYOND Key: RhinoKing Staff BYOND Key: Alberyk Game ID: b9y-cn47 Reason for complaint: I feel discriminated against as I couldn't play a surgeon in a wheelchair. I was told that this was against the rules -my character, apparently, wasn't believable due to his disability and chosen job. However, the admins gave me no opportunity to actually play the character and explain his background despite being able to cite numerous examples of real life and fictional surgeons in wheelchairs. I feel that being in a wheelchair is integral to my character and his backstory (the server is high role play). Moreover, games are meant to be an escape from reality; if the server was high fantasy Europe would you not allow my character to be black as it would be unrealistic? I think its absolutely ridiculous and offensive that you won't allow me to play myself in space. That's all I wanted from this heavy role play experience and I'm upset that I was unnecessarily restricted from doing this. RhinoKing Posted October 10, 2020 Author Posted October 10, 2020 Oh sorry my bad shall I edit the post accordingly?

It's simple: playing a surgeon in a wheelchair is too much of a handicap that would not get you into this career, especially on the Aurora where surgeons are often expected to also handle ICU/GTR work in addition to surgery if the personnel is lacking. 3 hours ago, RhinoKing said: Moreover, games are meant to be an escape from reality; if the server was high fantasy Europe would you not allow my character to be black as it would be unrealistic? Non sequitur and an irrelevant example.
RhinoKing Posted October 11, 2020 Author Posted October 11, 2020 But as I said I can state numerous science fictional and non-fictional examples of surgeons and doctors in wheelchairs. Also, perhaps I don't understand the game mechanics well but movement doesn't feel much different (if different at all) in a wheelchair vs out of one. Just slightly slower but still a reasonable pace. How would it hinder my character from doing his job as a surgeon?
Pratepresidenten Posted October 21, 2020 Posted October 21, 2020 Hello. Me and @CakeIsOssim have looked this over and as Matt said, you're more often than not tasked with other medical tasks that require you to be more mobile. The rule in which we are referring, believeable characters, applies to the setting in which a doctor in a small medical staff should not be wheelchair bound on a space station. There's nothing stopping someone who is disabled, especially someone with a high salary like a surgeon, from getting prosthesis. It is the future, and having a disability here is more or less by choice, as there is a plethora of options to choose from. It just isnt believable for NT to hire a surgeon in a wheelchair to be the primary lifesaver on a dangerous space station, which is why we do not allow them. That being said, you are more than welcome to shoot us an ahelp to see where you would be better suited to work on the station when confined to a wheelchair. We will consider this issue resolved unless there are other unrelated issues.
