[Feedback] Post-Mortem Borgo Sprite Rework Feedback Thread

Recommended Posts

Hello, 1 and a half year later. I put a lot of looove into animating and spriting these.

This is about the Bongoborgo sprite rework, which includes all of the current sprites + their animations.

I'm considering returning to do another full rework of them in a new, more fluid animation style that I've learned, but first I need feedback on what the current climate of the server is again, I'm really out of touch after being gone for so long, and I'm still not sold on coming back in totality, maybe just touching up my projects and 🚪🏃‍♀️

PRs here: Lemme know if you think the current 'borgs are cute and how to make them cuter.

Bongoborgo

Spiderbots + animations

So far to make Borgs more expressive, colorful and personable, I've.

  • Gave each sprite department colors
  • Created a Intent light system, bound it to a new layer so they glow in the dark.
  • Brought an entire new selection of highly detailed sprites into the mix.
  • Animated all 'borgs sprites except the only humanoid one, the HD-MAD.
  • Added new law wordings, gave important subheaders to help people follow the laws correctly.
  • Added a new animation for selecting a 'borg sprite (nice little spark), MattAtlas added the sprite selection wheel, thank them, but it certainly helps towards this purpose too.

My desire here is for people to give me more ideas on how to make 'borgs more atmospheric!

I did not know you produced these, but I've been nothing but pleased with them since their addition. I would be interested in seeing this new animation style.

As the OP asks, can you think of any atmospheric thing I could add to 'borgs to help make them feel more personable and real? As an example, sound effects?

I personally do not want borgs to be more personable. My preferred flavor of borg is cold, detached and unfeeling. Anything that heightens that feel will get my seal of approval. I'd like a new ability to be given to the AI to "Set Cyborg Directive" similar to how Xenomorph Queens can do on CM, but that's more code than icon work. Some sort of "processing" sound effect would be nice!

Personable in this context means feeling as if it is really there, as a mechanical being, Atmosphere. The feeling like "yeah, this big robot is standing right there." -- Not necessarily empathetic and human. Keep in mind. Stuff like the sounds, processing, light engine revving when starting up ,any number of stuff, please compile a list of ideas if you can. 👀

I don't want 'borgs to be humanoid, I love that they're non-humanoid, even when they can have a human-like personality, or can simply not.

I would love to see subtle sound effects for robot moving - nothing too loud or annoying, but having sound of motors, whirring and other appropriate noises.

From visual side of things. I can't think of anything that could be added. Yes better animations might be nice, But I think they might be subtle change compared to effort that might be needed to make them.

make Borgs more ... colorful ...

Also I don't like word colorful here, like Butterrobber202 they shouldn't feel like full blown personalities with there look and abilities. I wouldn't want to see a rainbow borg. Ok maybe once in the context of event. But I think they should stay as corporation slaves, bound by cold laws, meant to do there assigned job and have sufficient social capabilities to make humanoid personnel feel comfortable around them.

Thank you v. much for the feedback, yes, colorful is the correct word. 'Borgs are supposed to be as personable as IPCs, they have the same brains in many cases (Androids). People are free to play them as true personalities similar to IPCs, or they are free to play them as robotic servants of the Station.

Both approaches work for 'borg gameplay and exist in the Lore, my 'Borg is very robotic as well,  but they don't view their laws as 'Slavery' or 'Service to the Station', they view it similar to how a Secret Service Operative would view it, they were given missions, their laws are their missions, and they use their capabilities to achieve those missions.

As you can see, there is a lot of diversity in how a 'borg can view their laws, the thing is, their personality has to be conducive to it and actively achieve it, that's about it.

In regards to the term COLOR explicitly, I don't mean colorful in a personable sense at all, I used personable for that. I mean colorful as in, rework their colors to be less dry and with more variance in the colors used, obviously this still is limited to their department colors, but we can add more colors alongside the department colors to make them vibe more with the design direction that the Station has gone.

The TLDR: Borgs are Station characters, they are expected to roleplay, they are given tools to roleplay, they are not maintenance drones. They are capable of viewing their laws differently, they just must have a personality that doesn't violate their laws and they must follow them. Borgs can be robotic or human-like, colorful meant updating their colors. I DESIGNED their color schemes, and I'm not happy with them.

This should clear up your concerns,

What exactly is the problem with the spider bots? They look great.

This is in response to either the Arachnotrons (I'd only lightly change them, potentially) or the spiderbots that are made in robotics that are just a brain + legs, I floated the idea of having a 'borg, when disabled, be able to detach its brain into a spiderbot so that 'borgos aren't stuck for like 20 years in perma-crit, but gave the impression I might resprite them. Nothing in stone at all, nor to what capacity exactly I would, or if I'd make that rework of borg death in general, but for sure something has to be done to fix the perma-crit issue.

A 'borg can't just be given the choice of sitting in perma crit permanently or using the ghost verb, ghosting, and being forced to give up their character entirely, even if someone repairs them down the road. There needs to be a third option, some gameplay mechanic like this, or being able to succumb and if repaired, re-enter their body.

Why needs there to be a third option?

Anyone else is also either in crit or dead until someone heals them. I dont think posibrains just being detachable is something that can just be decided on a whim. Maybe ask the synth loredevs about that before putting any work into it. All in all not a fan of this suggestion, just because "a borg cant just given the choice of sitting in perma or [...] ghost".

Don't get hit, don't get in fights

Okay, I am going to make a third option and I am going to PR a third option onto the github, every other species dies in crit and can watch the game. The fact that 'borgs sit in perma crit or ruin the roboticists round by ghosting is frankly mechanically ridiculous and the complacency towards it is equally so.

If you have a problem with players of the game not being stuck staring at a blank screen for an hour, that's your problem.

Okay? No need to get hostile? No one needs to sit an hour at a blank screen - everyone can respawn after 20 minutes.

I didn't get hostile, interpreting what I say as hostile for responding to your idea of that 'borgs should simply avoid damage if they don't want to sit in perma-crit is not getting hostile.

No, the roboticist who wants to do their job has their round ruined if a 'borg ghosts no matter what, they can't repair them, they can't take their brain out and play with it, they can't spiderbot you, nothing. This is only because a 'borg doesn't actually die when they ghost, they ghost.

This means, currently, a 'borg who actually cares about the roboticists fun won't ghost, they would sit and wait. A 'borg who cares about roleplay wouldn't ghost even if they didn't care about the roboticist.

Note, as well, the spiderbot thing was an idea, I even outright stated it wasn't set in stone. A third option could be as simple as enabling 'borgs to succumb. But there is going to be a third option coded.

This also isn't the place, as if I was going to make any change as significant as the 'Detachable brains' idea @KingOfThePing You're right I'd need to run it through the Lore dev and ALSO put a feedback thread exclusively on that. This isn't actually a suggestion thread, or a feedback thread, for that.

This is specifically for sprites, so the spiderbot sprite feedback (That it was good) is appreciated and more suited for this thread, regardless thank you for the feedback on the third option idea and if I code it, it'll probably be something far simpler like just enabling 'borgs to ghost without ghost ghosting. Succumb working for them, would be all that took.

Edit I also apologize if I came off as hostile to you -- I wasn't being hostile and I think you're great.

Okay to be fair, there was a misunderstanding. I thought you want to change the Spiderbots, not the Arachnotron borg chassis. So that is a mistake from my part. I guess it can get a touch-up and the animations look good. I just like the small spiderbots (brain+acutators or however they are made) and I think they dont need a change.

Also also, I actually didn't know that borgs cannot succumb. I havent played borgs for a long time and had the impression they could do that. Then I change my opinion - there should be the succumb option for borgs, as for everyone else.
