BYOND key: ArmaliteRifle

Discord Username: gigachad#1085

Character names:

Francis Kelly

How long have you been playing on Aurora?:

I can remember joining this server roughly a year ago. I have a feel for every department. Notably Security and Engineering.

Have you received any administrative actions? And how serious were they?

A few bwoinks here and there, not much I can remember. I try my best to keep my nose clean.

Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph each.

What do you think the OOC purpose of a Head of Staff is, ingame?:

To provide structure and more functions to a department, act as an authority figure for the ship, and to help their department make the ship as a whole communicate and act more efficiently. They would also be expected to handle situations much bigger than themselves, and teach apprentices or cadets the ins and outs of their job.

What do you think the OOC responsibilities of Whitelisted players are to other players, and how would you strive to uphold them?:

Be a role model to others, show around new players not only to their job, but to the server. They would have the power to allow, or create scenarios for a better narrative for the round rather than just using the power to immediately squash it with extreme prejudice. It isn't just a license to boss people around however. They are held to higher expectations than other players, in both roleplaying and rule aspects.

Could you give us the gist of what is currently happening in Tau ceti and how it affected your character and their career?

Tau Ceti, and the Orion Spur to an extent is undergoing strife and insurgency. In Biesel Phoron resources are dwindling and are now turning to the stars, or Elrya to keep the new republic strong. Fuel prices are increasing due to the unsustainable production. Abroad, the Solarian Alliance has become isolationist, much of its former territory falling into Biesel's hands or deserter warlords.

Sergeant Francis Kelly is a former police officer recently recruited into Nexus Corporate Security. Due to the push of economic and political decline of Sol, and the waning prosperity of Biesel, he has traveled to Biesel to begin a new life, or at least live out the rest of it. Soon, a contract was signed. The SCCV Horizon. A large prospecting ship destined to explore the stars to locate and produce phoron, and survey for prospective colonies. Figuring he'd want some adventure in the stars rather than staying in the same spot as he had been in for years, he gladly accepted the posting. Perhaps his previous expertise will be useful to the Horizon, he thought to himself.

What roles do you plan on playing after the application is accepted?
Head of Security

Have you familiarized yourself with the wiki pages for the command roles?
Yes, I have prepared for the roles I want to do before I've made this application. I've learned so much about command roles during my trial.

Characters you intend to use for command or have created for command. Include the job they will be taking.:
Francis Kelly - Head of Security

Do you understand your whitelist is not permanent, and may be stripped following continuous administrative action?
Yes, I do understand it can be revoked due to rule infractions, and the whitelist will endure as long as I behave myself.

Have you linked your byond account to the forums?

I believe I have so.

Extra notes:
Funnily enough, when my last application was denied my trial never ended. I haven't joined a command role since. However, I have improved my communication skills since last year. The slump in activity was due to a personal issue I didn't foresee. Things have gotten better; more stable now.

On another note, I have been studying criminal justice in real life too, so I'm thinking of reforming Security a little bit. I do have some busy weekdays, notably Thursday and next Tuesday.

Francis Kelly is a neat guy. While I didn't see much of your job in action (which I couldnt)  for our last interaction in a round I am still confident that you know how to play your role effectively.

I am going to cite my experience as my investigator, Richard Slade (name for validation). When I played my investigator your warden would typically be the shift warden, and I always noticed how you were taking charge despite the role having no inherent power. Regardless of the push-back from the other ISD members... you still made an effort to organize the department, hand out some paperwork you had created for things you believed to not be in the requests console, and just be over-watch in general. Another thing I noticed was that you were not in the brig the whole round for any round I played with you, and made an effort to interact with people.  I'd like to see you during your trial and see how well you handle being given a role with more authority.

While not working with Kelly in-department, I've interacted with Kelly during stressful situations - antagonists actively causing problems, and my bitch of a Caladius bringing more to the plate for him. I found him to be a great character from this perspective. Beyond that, I've enjoyed his presence in general, and I think he'd be a good face for the department.

Played a round with Francis Kelly as HoS, as my orange XO. I can see you are quite capable, and you can coordinate your security staff, in that revolution round, investigating many people at once.

BUT.

As I have told you IC, a HoS also is supposed to keep command informed of what is going on. And also the crew in general, via announcements and the common channel. You were basically silent on command comms, and when me and the captain went down in person to get an answer of what is going on, we stood there for like 15 minutes, with you either not noticing or ignoring us. If I have not noticed you randomly mention "espionage" on sec comms, and mentioned it to the captain, then the captain would not know of any of this until maybe very late into the round, really, as he had sec comms off.

So, uh. Sorry, but I am not really impressed, to be very honest. But hey, at least you did apologize when I told you that IC, and noticed the flaw. Most HoS' who are not communicative go defensive when I bring that up, going all "oh, fuck off, I was busy with security stuff", so there is room for improvement, and you see it yourself. Good luck with the trial and everything.

Interacted with Kelly mostly as a Bridge Crewman, though never really directly. To mimick Dreamix, the radio silence was off-putting and my crewman was pretty much in the dark the whole time aside from a couple of snippets - but that's my only complaint. Otherwise from what I've seen as an observer, Kelly is really interactive with his department, and I liked that he was scheduling exercises and actually doing stuff when there wasn't antag shenanigans going on, as that's not really something I had seen before!

+1 from me. :)
