How long have you been playing on Aurora?
Actively, since around 2021
Played on and off occasionally since 2018ish(?)

Have you received any administrative actions? And how serious were they?
Once, for calling someone out publicly when I should have approached an admin privately on the matter.

What do you think the OOC purpose of a Head of Staff is, ingame?
Heads of staff can steer a round for better or worse, their power over the crew is even more absolute on the Horizon than it was on the Aurora and so their leadership is more essential than ever. They are the first line of communication between departments, as well as the driving force behind the individual department goals - be that the discovery aspect of research to the maintenance aspect of engineering. They are there to be a figure to look up to and rely on during all of operation.

Heads of staff also exist in part to drive the narrative of a round, and this involves creating appropriate responses to antagonist action while not outright hindering them.

What do you think the OOC responsibilities of Whitelisted players are to other players, and how would you strive to uphold them?
Be a role model for existing and new players, many of my responses above apply here as well. I have ideas for science specifically to try and garner more crew interaction, and I'd like the opportunity to try them and learn from those experiences to provide a fun playing environment for the crew.

Explain how the recent events in the Spur changed your character and how they came to be employed on the SCCV Horizon.
I am planning on using Sasha Kaiser for this role, he is a Visegrad native whose career and livelihood was flipped on it's head following the collapse of the Solarian Government. Having been affiliated with dissonant political groups made him feel like staying on Visegrad was unsafe as the local government became more militarized as the seat of the SSMD. With all that in mind, he left his home and took on a contract with Zavod - intending on pursing a Director position later on; ie - now.

What roles do you plan on playing after the application is accepted?
For now I just want to give RD a shot, I may try other roles in the future - but I'd like to see more engagement from science and it seems like a good time. I want the department to have more reasons to engage with the crew, and that is something that is more accessible with a persistent RD

Have you familiarized yourself with the wiki pages for the command roles?
Yes

Characters you intend to use for command or have created for command. Include the job they will be taking:
Sasha Kaiser - RD

Do you understand your whitelist is not permanent, and may be stripped following continuous administrative action?
Yes

Have you linked your BYOND account to the Forums?
Yes

Extra notes:
I'm not extremely active, and mostly play on the weekends. It might take me some extra time to gather feedback.

I've been an unknowing fan of 50s characters since way back when I had no presence out of the game. Only after getting to know them OOC did I find out that they play a whole slew of characters I've enjoyed interacting with over the years.

They have my +1.

I've never seen a bad character from her in over 9 years, I don't expect that to change any time soon. Has always put an exemplary amount of thought and care into character writing.

Biggest +1 I can offer!

On trial until 10 June 2023. Try to play command as much as possible during this time, but don't stress too much if you can't. Make sure to advertise your application in OOC at the end of the round to gather feedback on your application. We'll get your access to command roles updated soon.

If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to message me on Discord: Owen#2139

Good luck!

Having just had a round with one of their characters as an Interim RD, I'm of the opinion that their approach to treating antagonists (at the start, at least) was horribly aggressive with a refusal to consider a gimmick. Which, in my personal opinion, that's not great when it comes to a member of Command; I'm not sure how it went after as I only interacted with them for a short time, but it felt a little like trying to crush a gimmick or brickwall it for the sake of it. It might just be the character and their belief, but as it's the same one you applied for your whitelist for in general, it's pretty important to note.

I can't speak of many other instances, and I haven't seen much negativity otherwise, but as that's a big contention point for me now-days I'll leave it with a bit of neutrality. I don't really want to +1 or -1 this app for now, but I thought I'd leave feedback anyway.

Thanks for the feedback! Sasha is definitely an abrasive character, and I realize I was stonewalling by leaning into that a little too hard. I'll keep that in mind for the future and try to encourage gimmicks more. I appreciate the comment.

As I've had more experience with their RD since then, I've noticed the trend of abrasive tendencies; however, they as a member of command, have been fine enough! I don't think there's a real negative bit about them that I've noticed when I've been playing command for the time being. Besides a tendency to sort of zone out of things, but beyond that? +1.

Hey, your trial will be ending in about a day.  How is it going with getting more feedback? Make sure you're advertising your application in OOC at the end of rounds if you're still struggling.

A little late to the party but we used to play a lot on Aurora in engineering. Fantastic roleplayer, Yasin is still my favourite engineer!

I'm not sure if my feedback counts for anything given I gave this vouch in the first place, but I've had a good experience with Sasha Kaiser so far. I don't know how things look in the actual department because I've only interacted with them as a BC, but they're pretty active in terms of offering me stuff to do every round. i.e. sending me on little quests to find derelicts, planets, etc. for science to go look at, and asking me to drive them to places. +1 still applies now that I've seen them play for sure.

50_Noob and their character Sasha Kaiser have created a unique dynamic within the position a Command character holds, characteristics which are so profound and within my experience are rare aboard/in the Aurora Command roster.

I should preface this by saying, my character absolutely despises that of Sasha Kaiser, dating to incidents prior to Kaiser becoming a director. Predominately due to their aggressive initial nature and bluntness, however, that is not synonymous with the character being unfit or a poor choice for command. As I view it, a vast selection of the current Command rosters typically results in what I’d describe as players attempting to play your boss in addition to being your ‘friend’. I rarely ever see department heads holding standards to work, productivity, etc while also keeping player interaction fun. Most interactions from my perspective with Command follow the path of,

  1. A player character in a department makes a mistake, a bad judgment call, or is unfit for the job they picked.
  2. This is eventually brought up to the online head of staff character
  3. Some questions are asked
  4. The resolution to the issue is to laugh, act like your staff are your best friends, and just say mistakes happen.

While not inherently negative, this seems to be the unanimous play style I’ve observed across the command characters, at least until interacting with Sasha Kaiser.

50_Noob has created a character that is not immediately likable, a character that takes the position of a ‘boss’ and plays it unlike any other I’ve seen aboard.
I’ve also yet to see a research player complain about Sasha Kaiser, meaning this aggressive banter/appearance at the very least is not off-putting to interact with, which I can personally attest to enjoying. Sometimes it’s nice to not get along with everyone and to get into arguments with characters who aren’t in Operations.

I think it would be a mistake to not permit 50_Noob and their character of Sasha Kaiser for a whitelist. Aggressiveness should not be considered a negative and 50_Noob should be encouraged to continue refining their character's aggressive nature as a Research Director to perfect it for antag interaction, player interaction, etc. I wholeheartedly give this a +1 and hope to get in debates/arguments more with this character, adds some spice to the round.

If that was not clear +1

+1 from me as well. As Huntime stated above, 50 does an excellent job of portraying Sasha as someone who is an actual superior at work, who expects you to get your job done quickly and effectively as opposed to trying to be your friend while on the clock. It'd definitely be a healthy addition to the command team to have someone a little more uptight that is more focused on results than everyone having a good time.

I've played a few rounds in the science team under Sasha, and I have to say that Hunt is right on the money with their assessment. They are abrasive, stern, and very much your boss. Frankly, I believe this is an excellent character to head the department, not only from an in-universe perspective (the SCC would probably want someone harsh to reign in any unsafe behavior from the research team), but also from an OOC enjoyment perspective. It is satisfying to have some amount of conflict with your department head, because at the end of the day, they're there to oversee you, not to have a pleasant chat over coffee. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against friendly Command characters - they can certainly be played well, too. But I genuinely think taking Sasha out of the RD slot would be a massive missed opportunity, 50n00b plays them very well in my opinion.

I’ve played command with 50noob since they started their trial and I think they have a unique dynamic when it comes to being a head +1

I've had only one direct interaction with Sasha so far, and I have mixed feelings about it. The situation in question was one in which I was an antagonist, so there is some uncertainty, but Sasha did not know in character that I was yet.

The situation involved a perceived abuse by one of the security officers. The situation presented to Sasha was one where an officer was accused of refusing me medical treatment for a broken leg, and disregarding an assault that they personally witnessed on my person in the course of arresting me.

Sasha is not a head of security, it is true, but she was also the only head of staff on station at the time, so they had to do something, and I was not terribly impressed with what they did do. Essentially, they blew off the entire matter (though I did see them at the tail end of what looked like scolding said officer) and foisted responsibility for the matter of the assault on my character off to the operations chief, because the offending party was in operations. The operations chief naturally had no idea what to do about it, as this was clearly a security matter, and security was blowing us off.

This didn't strike me as a particularly responsible use of a command position. Not being omniscient, I can't say that I know all details of Sashas actions, but is the only present command authority figure, it seems to me that they had a responsibility to take command of the situation and they simply did not because they didn't want to be bothered by it.

It's a problem when non antag security officers aren't doing thier job correctly, and people seem a little too quick to just blow off this sort of issue with the phrase "file an incident report" (which is what I was told after about 20 minutes of trying to get the assault charge acted on in vain) because there was no head of staff around who could be bothered to get security to act. Incident reports are only helpful if the situation doesn't involve an antagonist, so you can understand how it would be frustrating to experience unilateral non cooperation.

This post is neither a +1 or -1 towards this whitelist, because it was a single interaction and I don't feel like I have the full details. However, it is my hope that it gives 50_n00b some things to consider in the future if they happen to find themselves as the only command officer on the station again and something needs their attention out of department.

Thank you everyone for the kind words!

Weaselscribe; Thank you for giving me some feedback as well. I completely understand where you're coming from, I think from your perspective it's very clear the secoff walked away from this without punishment and the ops manager was too out of the loop to help you with the cargo tech. Just to give you some peace of mind, the officer was told to return to duty as a security incident seemed to be brewing and half the department was on an away mission. They were told they'd be charged with mistreatment of a prisoner and a report would be filed, but to return to work for now. RD is not really in a position to be doing this themselves, so it was all very circumstantial in my eyes.

I'm very much still gauging what lines I'm permitted to step over when I'm the only command available, or even when I'm just the one people are asking questions. I'll admit I probably should have just had the cargo tech dealt with then and there, but hey - its a learning experience. Thank you for bringing up your concerns and I'll make sure to keep them in mind in the future!
