Handicaps at creation.

I'm sure this might've been hinted at before, and that it's probably been turned down. For those of you who can't immediately tell, my idea is for characters to choose handicaps to start with.

But this is the future! We can fix it!

That right there might've turned down the idea before. But, I have a different way to suggest this. Make it so that if a player chooses one of the handicaps, they cannot run to the medbay and have it fixed.

Well, it's still the future! That doesn't make sense!

Neither does SSD. Just come up with something else, like space-blindness or whatever.

But that's dumb! Nanotrasen wouldn't hire on a blind security officer!

I agree. Some of the handicaps could be RP restricted from certain jobs. No blind officers or chemists, but there could be deaf chefs and etc. Mute bartenders and doctors, for example.

What's the point!?

It really opens up roleplay.

I don't see what's stopping anyone from RPing a mute/deaf character as is. We even have sign language for it.

We already have the coding in for these to work in-game. It's just a matter of making it an option to actually have these problems so that they really can't hear or speak. Crosses out all metagaming, and makes it realer.

Oh, and keep the sign language, right?

Once got admins on my case for playing a mute character in a not-important role.

That really doesn't make any sense, I mean if you are a non-important role, there really isn't a reason that you wouldn't be hired if you could do your job. Also, I am pretty sure I have seen a few characters that either couldn't speak or talk.

I have a mute CMO and I've never had anyone complain about it.

It might be that I make a greater attempt at communicating than the standard head of staff with an actual capacity to speak into their headset does.

I'd like to say that... You always can roleplay it out? I mean, there's no need for special verbs or commands to stop you. Just write it down in the Medical Records that you're a mute/deaf/blind/autistic person. However, I like your point of direction where suggestion should be leaning toward to, it's just that we wouldn't want to waste developer's time, no? Unless the rule conflicts, I suggest to vary on it. I just prefer to play a normal person.

I play a blind lizard. But its hard trying to remember your not supposed to see whats in the room, whose around, whats around, etc.

That's one of the main reasons why I want it to be coded in. You really wouldn't be able to see or hear, which cuts down on metagaming.

As for whether or not it's a waste of our developers' time? Mmh, I'unno. It's an enhancement for players who roleplay this. Suddenly it's more believable for you and everyone else because you really are limited, both through roleplay and gameplay. From my perspective, naturally occurring blindness and deafness are already in. You would only have to make it an option at creation, and to make it so that it cannot be fixed because it's "space-blindness" or something.

Not to say that you're wrong, UnknownMurder. There is a lot of things the developers could do to make the game that much more colorful and detailed, but they're avoided because of development time.

Handicaps are just gimmicks with a weak excuse of realism, and rarely contribute anything of note to a character except exceptional irritation to those forced to deal with them.

With that out of the way, this suggestion can neatly be filed under a more robust character creation screen, which I wholeheartedly support even if it justifies an entire station of mutes. Character creation is 9/10s of the enjoyment of roleplay, after all.

I've used RP handicaps for character development and etc. They're not totally worthless, and can mean something. Everything else that you said, I agree with.
