Server Moderator Application

Basic Information

Byond Account:Loow

Character Name(s):Alexis Mendoza, Chance Mendoza, Steven Smith [More inactive or in development]

AI Name(s): None

Preferred means of contact: Discord, Skype, Forum PM, Byond Messenger

Age: 20

Timezone: Central Standard Time (GMT -6)

When are you on Aurora?:Typically afternoons to nights.

Experience

How long have you played SS13?:About two years.

How long have you played on Aurora:Over a year. Since late 2014.

How much do you know about SS13 (Baystation build) game mechanics?: I have a working understanding of the basic game mechanics as well as seemingly unlimited access to a wiki. On a scale of PDA light activation to supermatter setup, I’m around Solar maintenance and setup.

Do you have any experience moderating for an SS13 server?:None

Have you ever been banned, and if so, how long and why?:Not Applicable. The closest I’ve come to being banned was an early event in which I helped a wizard, a staff, and a detective’s pistol become familiar with one another. Tish bwoinked and explained to me the ABC’s of Aurora and that an assistant probably doesn’t know magic-staffs or guns very well. His logic made sense, and I’ve been unrobust ever since. In other words: No bans and I have taken previous staff interaction/criticism/feedback/getting told "hey you're doing it wrong" fairly well in the past.

Personality

Why do you play SS13?: I got started when a friend showed me the ropes one day, and it’s become a bit of a habit of mine since then. I can’t write novels or books, tabletop groups always fall apart down the road, and I like to write characters (Although they’re not always what I’d call “good” looking back). I play SS13 because I enjoy it. Putting characters through whatever the round brings is a pretty good time. Having those characters develop a bit on the way? Also a nice time.

Why do you play on Aurora?: People seem to care here. If memory serves, I first heard about Aurora from a Reddit post about a funeral that happened mid-round for a security officer. Little things like that got me here and kept me around. Although I’ll admit that now I’ve sort of bought into this whole “HRP” thing and Aurora’s still the best place around for it.

What do moderators do?:Moderate. Help out any players who seem to need it, respond to Ahelps whenever possible, keep in communication with other staff, and generally keep the wheels turning on the server however they can.

What does it mean to be a moderator for our server?: It means working as one of the many faces Aurora. The way players see a server is often largely related to how they view their staff. Talking things out and having sound reasoning during a few tense situations may very well make people who are newer to the server think more of it while letting knee-jerk reactions slip you into a fit can make the entire server look bad.

Why do you want to be a moderator?:To help out the server primarily. I've been answering these questions out of order for a few days, and I have to say that my answers to some of these other questions phrase it much better than that. I like this place. It helps me get my RP fix and have a good time doing it. It's time I return the favor by helping it run smoothly.

What qualities do you possess that would make you a good moderator?: First off, I'm willing to listen. Input is important, and I take whatever I can get. I see no reason to turn up my nose at free lessons. That's a pretty smooth transition into "willing to learn" too. I'm fine with learning more about mechanics and have been dipping my feet into research as of late.

I'm not afraid to admit when I need a hand. If a situation has me stumped or I just don't know what's happening, I am more than willing to bring it up. Communication is sort of a big deal.

I also understand that people have their own opinions. Not everyone has to agree with what I say, and that's fine by me.

How well do you handle stress, anger, or insults?: Pretty well. I'm typically not one to (as Gwen Stefani puts it) "holler back" at someone who's legitimately angry. People are just people, and there's not much point to getting riled up over every little thing or making someone feel more frustrated than they may already be. Worst case scenario, someone on the internet offers a well executed insult. Not too groundbreaking.

Anything Else You Want to Add:

I've been wrestling with the idea of applying for moderator since applications reopened, but I didn't want to rush into this. I spent some time asking around for tips, advice, and general information on moderating and stopped to think more than a few times. I believe I can put this information and experience to good use. I’ve gone through a beautiful transformation from a newbie curious about HRP to someone who likes to think he can help out when push comes to shove. The way I see it, it's about time I tried helping out around here.

A basic description of modding:

For some reason i thought you were already a moderator.

Chance is one of the few security officers that i find to be friendly and approachable - who actually seems like a person who interacts with other people, rather than a machine for whom other people are merely targets or sensors to find targets.

He's one of those "good officers" who i feel like I can PDA about something that concerning me, and know that he'll have the responsibility to investigate it, disseminate information to his department, and give some assurance it's being worked on. I'd be very happy to see Chance Mendoza, the character, as a moderator. I'm sure his player isn't too different

+1 from me. In addition to being a really fungi, Loow is someone who I could see doing a very good job as a moderator. The application was really well-writ in my opinion, and I'm very confident he would do a tremendous job.

Applicant interview, posted for public review at applicant's discretion:

Now for my onions.

Applicant provided intelligent, well-thought out answers in response to the questions, and shows great potential as a moderator, and possibly, one day, as an administrator. They certainly have the right level-headed approach to issues. Following completion of the interview, I would be willing to support Loow in a trial moderator run. +1.

I used to be in the same boat as Nanako where I had previously thought that Loow was a mod when I first joined the server. I have literally zero things bad to say about Loow. Loow is a great player and a great member of the community, and I would love to see them as a mod. +1

If this is accepted, the server will reach a new Loow point.

But really, for as much shit as I give Loow, he seems like a spot on guy. The only problem I can raise to them is that Id have to try with all my will not to pun in ahelp, again.

In OOC Situation (and Artemis), he shows great enthusiasm and calamity and would encourage people to roleplay like myself. I've not heard a complaint and he has been honest and cooperative. I already can imagine to see him as a team player.

I think that Loow would be a very good addition to the Moderation Staff. He is very mature when he needs to be but he can also take jokes unlike some other people. +1 I would have to say :D

The Skrell are finally moving to the upper ranks! Oh no!

Okay, this guy is a good pick. I had some IC, OOC, DO shenanigans crop up for me on an Extended round and he not only dealt with my politest bitching but talked me down, assured me he'd straighten things out, and generally acted like you were paying him to deal with a customer, rather than volunteering his time to lord over the masses.
