ArcBot - Head of Staff Application

Recommended Posts

BYOND key: ArcBot

Character names: Tom Albright (I've been working on Tom since I've joined here, yet to make another character.)

How long have you been playing on Aurora?: Around a month or a little over a month.

Why do you wish to be on the whitelist?: I wish to be on the white list so I can play the Research Director, who enforces paperwork on all of his scientists and keep the department nice and ogranized.

Why did you come to Aurora?: I came to Aurora for a heavier roleplaying style. I was originally from Goon so you probably know how lax their rules are. It was a big transition but I feel I got the hang of the protocols, and procedures here on Aurora.

Have you read the BS12 wiki on the head roles you plan on playing?: Yes, I've read the Research Director job guide many times, it's one of the easier heads of staff to play.

Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph each.

Give a definition of what you think roleplay is, and should be about: Roleplaying to me is acting out a role or character in a realistic manner. Using emotions, gestures or verbal means to express your feelings or thoughts.

What do you think the OOC purpose of a Head of Staff is, ingame?: To guide and help new players in their department with roleplaying and their job mechanics/objectives.

What do you think the OOC responsibilities of Whitelisted players are to other players, and how would you strive to uphold them?: To teach new players who don't understand Heavy Roleplay how to get in the swing of things, and answer questions respectfully if they need help. I would strive to answer any questions that I know the answer to, and give hints and tips to new players while keeping it strictly OOC and not bringing IC aspects into it.

Please pick one of your characters for this section, and provide well articulated responses to the following questions.

Character name: Tom Albright

Character age: 54

Please provide a short biography of this character (approx 2 paragraphs): Tom Albright was born into a wealthy family, his mother Linda being a Research Director on the NSS Antlia, and his father leaving them at a young age due to unknown reasons. Ever since Tom's mother had to bring him with her during her shifts, his passion in the science field grew. He loved deconstructing anything in site to find out exactly what makes it operate. When Tom turned 18 he went to school for a bachelors degree in cybernetics, which he aquired by the age of 22. He got his first job as an assistant to a roboticist on the NSS Exodus and began making, and upgrading cyborgs. Two years after working under someone else, he grew tired of working on cyborgs and decided it was the right time to go back to school and start for his first PhD, in Xenoanatomical Studies.

He studied long and hard, with the help of his mother, by the age of 32 he had his PhD. He started frantically looking for work with his newly aquired PhD being his main asset, but had no luck. One day his mother told him about a position as an xenobioligist opening up on the NSS Antlia, and he had to apply. With his education and a little help from his mother, he got the job with ease. Tom began working at the NSS Antlia, which he continued to do for a suprising fifteen years working with slimes, and all other sorts of xeno life forms. Tom and his mother were bickering regularly since they had to spend so much time together while working, and he just couldn't take it any longer. He started looking in the classified ads for a new position aboard another research station, when he came across an opening for a Scientist aboard the NSS Exodus, where he worked as a roboticists assistant at an earlier age. He wasn't exactly sure what he was applying for, but with his education and recommendations he got the job and was assigned to Research and Development where he continues to work to this day, occasionally helping out the xenobiologists with their studies, or outbreaks.

What do you like about this character?: What I like about Tom is he's very stubborn, but also really easy to get along with as long as you do your job. Another thing I like about Tom, is he's all about paperwork. Making sure every item in Research is accounted for, and exactly who has it.

What do you dislike about this character?: The one thing I don't like about Tom is the fact he doesn't like xenos. Skrellians being the most hated species. It's hard for him to get along with them, or help them out.

What do you think makes this character fit to be a head of staff?: His education, age, and ability to operate /most/ but not all departments in Research to the best of his ability. Also his organization skills.

Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions.

How would you rate your own roleplaying?: I would rate my roleplaying maybe a 7 out of 10. I still need to improve on my use of emotions, and actually socializing with others not in my department.

Extra notes:

Aito Kusanagi, Evelina Bell, and James Albright are the best co-workers a scientist can have. (Has nothing to do with the application.)

My only concern is him putting a monkey on his head and walking into the slimes.

Joking aside, tom does look like a suitable RD, both looks and personality, though id like it more if he wasn't so cheap about helping other departments, the OOC purpose of science is improving other department's equipment.

+1 from me

Yeah, I admit that I could work harder at actually upgrading other departments equipment. I usually do the destructive analyzer and the two borg chargers in robotics. Occasionally the auto-lathe in cargo.

I'm going with a VERY HEAVY MINUS ONE here.

Tom Albright is the kind of person that thinks he knows absolutely everything, both ICly and OOCly, and is a straight dick, bluntly put, to anyone who may even remotely question this. He is stubborn, rude, standoffish and often refuses help or guidance from his coworkers in favour of his own (often absolutely inane) methods. It's a type of behaviour I hate with researchers to begin with, and I would not want to ever see this in an RD.

In a more polite way. He'll say one thing, someone else will say another. Instead of talking it out, he immediately jumps for the rude, standoffish insults and attacks, gets very defensive and hostile, and absolutely refuses to see anything any other way except his own.

For the love of all that is holy.

Big time -1 from me. Tom Albright has a very loose familiarity with the rules and directives of the station, and plays fast and loose with the rules. I find the idea that he is strict on paperwork to be wildly inaccurate given these principles. This ranges from thinking illegal research without Director permission is okay, to thinking it's okay to take an alien hunter out of xenobiology to be cooked up and fed to the crew. These are serious concerns for someone who wants to be a head of staff. But, not everyone is meant to be an infallible follower of proper procedure and protocol. Even heads of staff have their shortcomings, and even I had to learn some things following getting my head of staff whitelist. But, then there are the personality issues... Tom isn't just "stubborn." He's an extremely condescending jerk who lashes out with a barrage of insults when people try to help or lookout for him. He's unaccommodating, and to mirror a bit of what Jenna said, he acts like a know it all when confronted with any issue, even when he's very wrong. He prostrates and points to his employment records and age when confronted with any challenge to condescend and browbeat anyone who tries to discuss with him. He consistently treats Fraser like a unprofessional child, presumably just because of age difference, even though I've been here for months and Fraser is pretty dang professional. There was another incident about a week or two back where he went off on Fraser, calling him a a new guy and condescending the ever living crap out of him. He was going on and on about how new people should "know better" and listen to "their superiors" and that he "worked here for years" even going as far as to say it was "his lab" and that I had to listen to his orders. He tried to claim he was my boss even though we had to same job, just because of the age difference. All because Fraser analyzed an advanced mining drill that was sitting out to further some research, even though printing a new one took less than a moment and was done just about right afterwards, which inadvertently held back a miner less than ten seconds form getting a new drill. Tom absolutely cannot stand, in any way shape or form, being wrong. He even went as far as to claim that a head of staff who was never even present in the shift would be okay with taking a xenomorph out of science to be served as food for the crew. Auralia-Fedas Ro-Suos, mind you, who ironically, would never even remotely be okay with that, but that's more in the realm of YouJustGotOwened. OOCly, Arcbot seems like a nice guy, engaging the community in OOC chat and offering advice to new players within ye olde double brackets, but the way Tom Albright acts is very far from what is acceptable for a head of staff. Logs of conversations posted below.

So, I reiterate, minus one. Tons of room for improvement, I think you can do it, but with the current status of affairs I'm adamantly against this.

Logset One: Reaction to me calling security for a potential hostile xeno outbreak in xenobiology (He spent some time in the hospital for this, recovered, did some work, and then died by the same creatures, causing the security response anyways but hours later.)

Logset Two: He dragged a locker with an alien hunter and deposited it in the bar to be cooked and served for the crew, violating all kinds of rules and procedures presumably for keks, and possibly endangering everyone. Not good role-play. Even going further and lying saying that a very straight-lace by-the-books reputable head of staff would be okay with it.

I don't think I've ever been rude to a player OOCly, if I have I'd like to know about it please.

The alien hunter was dead, and I was told it can be cooked in the kitchen, why would Research just throw it out rather then have it used by the crew? Also no director was on at the time of this taking place, so I had no one to sign off on it anyways. It's really just seems like one of your IC characters don't get along with mine. Also for log set one, yes on code green security can't just burst in because some other scientist who had /no/ idea what was going on in xenobiology screamed for security. Things happen, it's a dangerous job, I said you weren't needed and you didn't like that. I'm sorry.

Also, I've seen Director Auralia scream at security for trying to come in and kill off xenos before, they are research and should be researched.

He convinced Nanako Weiss to stab herself with a really sciencey knife, and then claimed it was a suicide attempt. She ended up going to a psych and everything. (He was a changeling so it's totally cool)

That was a really fun experience to be honest. Convince her to stab herself with more things in future, weiss is really gullible.

.... If anything, that should be a -1 for that sort of behaviour. But this doesn't really tell anyone something qualitative about the player in question.

He was an antag.

It was fun RP, we both had fun, it was a lot more interesting than grabbing me and draining me in maintenance.

What it qualitatively tells you is that he can do something creative and fun as an antagonist, instead of plain boring murderboning

My first interation with Tom Albright was an interesting one. He gave me an Advanced Energy Gun he made in RnD and I had a lot of fun with it.

Great guy, but he would made a terrible Research Director.

May I ask your characters name and position when I gave you the advanced energy gun? I don't just hand those out like nothing unless it's an emergency situation.

Link to comment
Matt Dalmer. You told me I could use it to shoot monsters. It was definitely not an emergency and I don't believe you were an antag.

I don't know what to say, I remember Matt Dalmer though, but I would not give out an advanced energy gun, unless I was antag or you were a security officer. Or of course you were a scientist, because then it's entirely up to you too keep it in the Research department.

The things that Mofo and Jenna are worrying me but from the experiences that Auralia has had with Albright, I think he is a competent Scientist. I'm hoping that you could work to change those issues before you become a Research Director. I was going to give you a +1 but I am not sure, especially with the things that Mofo said. I am just going to leave this as a no vote for now but I definitely think if you work to change your ways, I would support this.

Yes, I'm going to make a new character and he's not going to be rude, disrespectful or the alike ICly at all, I didn't mean to make anyone think I was an asshole OOC, and I apologize to anyone who I may have offended OOC.

Well, it is mostly your IC character's attitude that was an issue for me as I haven't really interacted in OOC with you. I am glad that you will work and make a new character. If you are going to play them before this application has made it's decision and I like what I see, I will change my vote. Good luck.

I was a Miner at the time. I think I stopped by to ask you if you had any toys I could use on the asteroid. You gave me an Adv E-gun and later when I told Security you send me an angry PDA message that I betrayed you because it got you brigged.

He started calling my character a bitch and tried to get her arrested because she was too busy at the time to get some ore, thats a terrible indicator for his head of staff behavior -1

In my defense no matter what round it is all Sunny does is mine for robotics, she's not interested in helping RnD out at all and she's always constantly screaming over the comms.

Alright, I've adjusted my attitude and am ready to roleplay a respectable, helping co-worker in the Science department. Please try to keep your eyes out for Jack Davidson, and once again I apologize to anyone I may have made mad OOC.

Met him once as a waterboy. Terribly nice guy. Wish I had more time to chat with him. Got distracted. He's got potential.

Arcbot may or may not be ready for a whitelist now, but I think he's got the stuff to shape up and get one down the line. At the very least, I thought he did alright RPing the one time I got to see Tom Albright IC. Take some time to RP from different angles for a few months and I bet you'll get more praise.
