Help me with Coffee

Recommended Posts

So I’ve been trying for ages to get feedback on this sort of thing for ages on pretty much everything, The original coffee idea proposal, Discord, OOC and I have been hitting a brick wall over and over again so this is my last ditch effort to get some feedback and ask you “Please give me what /you/ want”

Because if I coded only what I wanted you would hate it.

Here is the list of coffee’s I’m working on/have already coded:

Black Coffee: Stronger than normal coffee base for all recipes

Cafe Au Lait = Black Coffee + Milk: Heals very minor brute damage

Russian Coffee = Black Coffee + Vodka: Gets you drunk, heals minor rad damage

Irish Coffee = Black Coffee + Whiskey: Gets you drunk

Coffee with Lime = Black Coffee + Lime Juice: Heals minor toxins

Coffee with Lime? =Cafe Au Lait + Lime Juice: Gives minor toxins ( The lime juice would curdle the milk)

Espresso: Black Coffee + Sugar: Makes you jittery but faster won’t last long ( it’ll take a lot to make espresso 10 units of coffee and 10 units of sugar to make 1 unit of Espresso )

Café Cuban Peteo: Espresso + Space Cola: Makes you faster but gives you toxin damage

Mocha: Black Coffee + Cream: No idea what to give this one effect wise, maybe heals minor burn?

These are all the ones I have for now I left out some really silly ones just to give you these ones I’d really like some more suggestions though!

Eh.... I don't believe you could call that real though, Last time I checked Soda, Coffee Etc. shouldn't heal medical damage, NOW, you should be able to mix beneficial drugs into the drink which would be epic, so you could serve drinks at the bar, etc and it helps people who have slight damages, I could see NT doing that, having the Barkeep serve 'repairing' drinks to crew, But I don't see that every though we are 442 years in the future that coffee just mixed with something else, would heal damage, it just doesn't seem, realistic

Yep, she's right. After that thread notified me of it, i went and explored the code myself to confirm, and then documented it on the wiki

Several drinks, including milk, milky coffees, tomato juice, lime juice, orange juice, carrot juice, and tea, have fairly significant medicinal effects, and can stand in for a visit to medical for minor conditions.

I'm going to have to start teaching engineers to drink more tea. Maybe i'll deliver it to them.

Do you think i can give engineers medical orders to drink a cup of tea? they have a soft drinks machine right there in their breakroom

Having coffees actually make people faster won't be so easy. There's only one effect in the game that does that, iirc. CE_SPEEDBOOST, and it doesn't make you faster than normal, only nullifies movespeed penalties.

It's quite restricted, only being found in hyperzine, and the very rare Nuka Cola drink (which needs uranium to make). I get the impression it's not intended to be handed out easily. Maybe if it only lasted a really short time, and drinking too much caffiene damaged your heart so you couldn't just massively overdose to abuse it. (that would also be pretty realistic, caffiene is dangerous in large quantities. People have died from it)

There are a couple of alcoholic drinks in the bar menu that already involve coffee in some form - Kahlua is coffee liqueur

And we definitely do already have cafe latte (and soy latte) so more milky coffee is redundant

By the same logic though I shouldn't make the coffee machine because we already have one.

At the end of the day the machine and all the drinks inside it are there for RP purposes, it doesn't make sense for a character to openly drink while they're doing their job, on a break sure buuuut if they say "Irished up" their coffee while no-one was looking...

The entire point of this machine is for RP, the shit it dispenses isn't anything special, you're right its just another type of coffee but it helps build the world and it helps premote RP, the fact the coffee comes from a machine means most characters will act like it tastes better, the machine itself is a common thing in break room and the gathering ingredients will require interacting with multiple departments meaning you might make some friends along the way.

I get there are duplicates and thats fine but they're supposed to taste different there is no meaningful way I can do that because some characters might think it taste better some might not, the point is its a cool thing that'll be there and encourage RP.

RE: Our conversation on discord, i'll sum up my points for public viewing.

We already have a generic black coffee, 'Robust Coffee', and we already have a coffee with milk, 'Cafe Latte'

You want to duplicate them to apparently create better, high quality versions. But you're actually making them more generic than what we already have, 'black coffee' is about as simple and generic as you get.

I see two good ways to do it:

1. Don't duplicate things, reuse the content we have. use the normal coffee and cafe latte in your machine, have it dispense those

or

2. Make them not generic. give your coffee a brand name, some unique flair. Something like Darkdrop Coffee. something creative, recogniseable and not generic.

Im all up for coffee! Think of all the powergaming Roleplaying. we could have engineers flip their fingers at medbay and drink some russian coffee security pretend to be merely drinking coffee while getting drunk

I like this idea, not only does it give the barkeep more things to do, they're water downed effects so powergaming on em isn't a real issue

Eight Bells Coffee. A brand name for straight black strong coffee. 8 Bells is a nautical term for the end or beginning of a watch. It is also a play on 8 o Clock coffee, a popular American brand. Arabica, not peasant scum Robusta.
