Guest Marlon Phoenix Posted August 3, 2016 Posted August 3, 2016 I've felt that our library database has a serious issue with quality control. CCIA has been given ability to manage the database but I feel like we need a comprehensive reform of the library in order to make it less butts. They do nothing but add to the clutter. The library should focus on things made by players and our own setting, not filled with everything Lovecraft ever wrote that you can read online elsewhere. 2) A book writing guideline will be established to make books more abstract, and the types of books will be enforced. Non-fiction should refer to non-fiction within our setting. And abstraction may help add fluff to the library that isn't as dense as anything else. An abstract book would be like:The Adventure of Yinzr.Hissanda Authorizi This book follows the tale of Zzlinzr Yinzr, a unathi hero who struggles to come out of the closet. 3) Fiction books made by players and fully fleshed out will be kept. So you are encouraged to write abstract books but if you want to write a full book then you are able. Currently books are extraordinarily ugly if they get really long. Imagine if each wiki page was nothing but text, no pictures, formatting, or anything else. I thought about copypasting in wiki pages or elements but it gets very dense and very ugly very fast. Attached to this legislation is a rider that names Jackboot the new Head Admin along with a law that forces all staff to take weekly lore exams. The most common argument I've heard: "But my character reads these books and we don't write enough!" So you're telling me that you prefer to copy poets and sit around reading them to yourself in the game and that this is a better status quo then organizing a poetry fair and submitting poems made by the playerbase into our library database?
Nanako Posted August 4, 2016 Posted August 4, 2016 I honestly don't agree with removing real books If a real book is in the library, then you can read it while playing, like while sitting at your desk waiting for something to happen. A real book written by a famous author is probably more likely to actually entertain you. Also if someone asks what you're reading, you can show them here and appear cultured maybe we can have them cordoned off in a special section like Historical Fiction, since they were all written 400 years ago
Carver Posted August 4, 2016 Posted August 4, 2016 So you're telling me that you prefer to copy poets and sit around reading them to yourself in the game and that this is a better status quo then organizing a poetry fair and submitting poems made by the playerbase into our library database? 1) Yes. The classics are always good. SS13 players are also generally terrible poets and I'd rather not have the library's poetry section be a dedicated cringe festival. 2) I don't see why these are mutually exclusive. You can have real books and fake books side by side, this is not an issue. I also fail to see why one should force abstraction instead of, again, having both abstract and non-abstract available. I come to the library to read the writing of various historical authors as well as players, I don't want to open a book and see a single fucking line in it when I want a story. That is to say I'm not against single-line books for certain things, but I despise the idea of forcing them. The only time I've seen abstraction make sense was in a grammar book for Ceti Basic, because the language does not actually exist and there is no basis from which to create a proper grammar book unless you're being a smartass and just copy+pasting an English grammar book. Currently books are extraordinarily ugly if they get really long. Imagine if each wiki page was nothing but text, no pictures, formatting, or anything else. You mean like actual books? If you want to make the text walls more bearable, add a method of having 'pages' in a book. You currently can (If I recall correctly) tinker with your writing to some extent if you know the little commands to do such things, such as changing text size or what have you.
Jboy2000000 Posted August 4, 2016 Posted August 4, 2016 What I think, and hope with all my heart, Boot is getting at with the "books that are too long look ugly" thing is that we want (NEED) is pages in our books. And as a writer of books in the database. 10 of them so far, Ive not once been able to actually fit it all in on one page before the fucking character limit got me. Not only that but the character limit is odd and annoying. What kind of stopping limit is 3059?
Guest Marlon Phoenix Posted August 4, 2016 Posted August 4, 2016 What Jboy said is also a good idea. That an additional tabs for every genre would make the library database 93.5% less butts.
Bedshaped Posted August 4, 2016 Posted August 4, 2016 Books that are copy-pasted real books should be removed. If someone wants to read a real book while they play, there's nothing stopping them from doing so through their browser. Book code could be improved so players can easily jump between pages, chapters and have more complex code for pictures or other things. As far as quality control goes, no-smut, no-realstuff and no "01100110 01110101 01100011 01101011 01101001 01101110 01100111 00100000 01101001 01110000 01100011" books.
November Posted August 5, 2016 Posted August 5, 2016 Pretty much of the opinion that the books really are a pretty meh thing until pages and hopefully chapters are implemented. Being good about how many characters is right per page might get tricky, but with some playtesting I'm sure the number range will be found pretty quickly. Pages is definitely necessary for poetry purposes, unless you feel like carrying around a bound book with eight lines of text in it. Being able to compile poems by authors or themes I think would be a much better way for characters to actually end up organically discovering poems instead of asking to have six random ones printed off and checked out. Real books are fine, and I think having pages/chapters to combine things into anthologies would reduce the clutter by quite a bit (everything lovecraft in just one book).
Jboy2000000 Posted August 5, 2016 Posted August 5, 2016 As far as quality control goes, no-smut, no-realstuff and no "01100110 01110101 01100011 01101011 01101001 01101110 01100111 00100000 01101001 01110000 01100011" books. Yes, yes, and no. I know what book you're talking about when you say no binary, but I say that it's a bit funny, and makes sense in a way, that an IPC or synthetic would write a book in binary code.
Bedshaped Posted August 5, 2016 Posted August 5, 2016 It doesn't make sense, IPCs don't "think" in binary the same way humans don't "think" in numbers but rather images, memory and language. That is, in the traditional depiction of a positronic brain they usually have nothing to do with binary computing.
Kaed Posted August 8, 2016 Posted August 8, 2016 I know what book you're talking about when you say no binary, but I say that it's a bit funny, and makes sense in a way, that an IPC or synthetic would write a book in binary code. No. Writing in binary is stupidly inefficient in terms of amount of space it takes to convey a message in text format, and I'm fairly certain we'd have issues if the library began getting titles that were in other actual languages such as french or spanish. We're trying to cut down on joke books, from the idea I'm getting of this thread, and binary books are absolutely nothing but joke books. No IPC would write in binary when 'Hello World!" can be accomplished with 11 characters instead of 96, and in fact, I would actually think that doing something that requires that much effort for the sake of a two word gag would be more the purview of a dumb human than a logic-oriented robot. Imagine, if you will, that instead of writing out letters with your pen in the normal way of moving the pen across the paper, you repeatedly poked your pentip into the paper over and over, slowly forming the letters from a series of closely-set points of ink. This is roughly how a printer creates letters and images on a sheet of paper, but it is not how a human (or IPC) would ever write words, because it wastes way too much time with our slow meat fingers. This is much the same way that writing out 0s and 1s is horribly inefficient when they are being used in sets of 8 to stand in for single characters. Binary is only functional and efficient in a digital setting where they can quickly be processed as a value, not on paper.
Arrow768 Posted August 8, 2016 Posted August 8, 2016 Alright some stats here: We have 322 Books with a total of 302289 words. Those 322 books are split up as follows: Reference - 54 Books with 32465 words Non-Fiction - 77 Books with 54193 words Fiction - 145 Books with 190971 words Religion - 28 Books with 21693 words Adult - 18 Books with 2967 words
Arrow768 Posted August 8, 2016 Posted August 8, 2016 Alright. Thanks to our heroic moderators 15% of the books have been purged. We are now at 276 Books
