[Accepted] ParadoxSpace's Skrell Application

Recommended Posts

BYOND Key: ParadoxSpace

Character Names: https://i.imgur.com/7RuD8Wm.png (Ash-Gulai is a leftover Cocksalami slot)

Species you are applying to play: Skrell

What color do you plan on making your first alien character (Dionaea & IPCs exempt): Likely some sort of off-white, #f0efe6 or even lighter.

Have you read our lore section's page on this species?: Yes!

Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph format. One paragraph minimum per question

Why do you wish to play this specific race: Now that I've actually started looking deeper into Skrell lore, I've found it quite interesting. Almost a sort of fallen empire trope. I'll not dance around the issue and say that I'm not also interested because of recent codework I've contributed. This has inspired a character concept for me, and I'm excited for the prospect to play it out.

Identify what makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a Human:

Skrell are a prideful, logical, yet very emotional species. Although they cannot translate their own feelings into our language all that well at all, or utilize things like body language that we do ever day, Nral'Malic can display emotions we don't even have in our languages. They can live to quite venerable ages, and carry a lot of knowledge with them. They have no real concept of gender roles, and may find them incredibly confusing in our culture.

Character Name: Kresp'Yeeblo Pras-Tiapt

Please provide a short backstory for this character, approximately 2 paragraphs

Kresp Pras was born in the middle of the Glorsh regime, in the year 2124. They did not grow up with a strong hatred of the machine, rather an intense, deep-set fear of what it could do. She was taught at a very young age that one must do whatever they can for Glorsh, or they will be seen as wasting space. To this extent, their family were heavily in the business of swindling other Skrell with overpriced 'supplies' in their little corner of Federation space. Fortunately for some, Glorsh-Omega was defeated. Almost vanished. Unfortunately, their family was, of course, found out by those they ripped off.

Many years of hiding and running were on their plate, until the mid 2400s. Kresp made the bold move to abandon the Federation entirely, to live amongst the humans. Some came with her, some attempted to beg the Federation for their lives. Being that moving cargo, getting money, and manipulating the common man with a silver tongue was all she truly knew, she looked into NanoTrasen. Though she still had much of a future infront of her, Glorsh-Omega had taken her past.

What do you like about this character?

I like the idea of being a morally questionable Skrell that did dubious things for their greatest villain just to survive. I want to experience the conflict between myself, other Skrell, and the IPC's she would distrust.

How would you rate your role-playing ability?

Honestly about a seven, sometimes I slip up.

As much as I DETEST Paradox for his AWFUL eyepatch update that was somehow added before MY SWEATER, he plays the GOD AWFUL Vaurca, and that takes some skill, I think. As long as this isn't for fact you can be any color, I can totally support more Skrell on station.

Edit: +1

Paradox knows how to make a character be just alien enough, but still relatable and understandable. They incorporate world building things into their characters and all that, have goals with them, and without a doubt is good at roleplay. BUT, I don't really know WHO this skrell is, or how they'd act in a situation, only that they're fearful and a bit cowardly. If you add a bit of a story of adversity to this it'll show how your character reacts to shit and give us a glimpse at how you'd play your character.

1+ regardless, because of Paradox's roleplaying skills.

Hey there. Loow here.

Dangerously low amount of feedback despite all the posts. Most of the posts here say next to nothing on the character design. No questions about the character either.

I also see no discussion. No dialogue with the applicant.

If I were processing this app with this post, I would be denying it.

ParadoxSpace Get more feedback with more substance. Engage with feedback and critiques. Engender discussion.

From what I can see here, at least one person (SleepyWolf) actually read this application and gave their thoughts on it. The applicant would likely be well-served to respond to these thoughts.

Discussion is usually a very, very good thing for applications. Editing one's application many times typically robs us of any proof of discussion in the thread. I recommend responses in-the-topic rather than editing previous posts when at all possible.

Here's a question from me.

Do you have any things about this character that you'd like to talk about which don't directly tie into synthetics or the Era of Synthetic Oppression?

On a side note, I've been getting muffled complaints about the quality of new Skrell, meaning I have to crack down on applications and whitelist holders.

I suggest any prospective applicants use their application as a chance to show off their skills in writing as well as their passion, not "play it safe" to get a whitelist.

Punishing the applicant because nobody has responded to it seems a bit unfair. You're the one who approves and denies applications, it should be your job to investigate the details for better answers, not us, as we don't approve or deny the applications, you do.

You could probably ask Paradox for more information regarding why almost two hundred years were spent in hiding, and how the family managed that, let alone why they were being targeted for what was essentially slavery under Glorsh rule.

Or maybe you could ask why only a period of seventy or so years in what's apparently an over three hundred year old lifespan set this Skrell in her ways that she became a virtual snake oil sellsman in such a permanent personality feature.

Or maybe you could ask why the Skrell is fucking off-white, or something.

We as players can give +1s or -1s, all we want but in the end it's up to you as the Loredev for the species to approve and deny the applications as you see fit, so you should be asking these questions. We're here to weigh in on the roleplay of the application, not question the lore. Half the players aren't even whitelisted for Skrell, let alone know their lore, so why are you expecting them to question Paradox on it?

I don't see a punishment here, but I appreciate your feedback on my actions.

You did a good job of finding issues with my post, which is well deserved, and pointing out things you feel passionate about within it.

You even expand on some good broader ideas in the same post.

Could you do the same thing with the application above please?

No, what I will do is offer you what I've observed of Paradox's roleplay.

Paradox typically subverts the "expected" roleplay of many of the species, especially with some of their Unathi. Meaning that where some people ignore the less-favorable aspects of the species that would likely earn you little friends or respect among the others who play the species, Paradox acknowledges them, most typically with the sub-humanoid treatment of Guwan as the various Unathi they play.

Looking at the character names, I've seen the various characters, but I've never once been able to link them to Paradox because they're usually not anywhere resembling each other. The ability to fill many hats is a good trait for a roleplayer, especially when it comes to various species. If somebody is able to pick out you as the player of a character just because of a defining feature your characters somehow all have, it makes you a poor roleplayer, much like my black cats.

I have little doubts that Paradox could manage to handle a skrell whitelist, and if I had it my way, a test run for the species would be held, much like a trial moderator does with their applications. If somebody shows an understanding of the species, letting them try it out for a week or so would give them time to see if the species is for them, and after the trial they could be denied, or approved to keep the whitelist, much like a trial moderator is.

I didn't have a whole lot of room in the OP to talk about it, but I wouldn't really categorize Kresp as cowardly or fearful. She's much more likely to get someone else to do something for her, yes, because she's an incredibly manipulative person. They're extremely bitter about synthetics, and even more spiteful about their involvement with Glorsh-Omega. Though she cares little for humans or other species, she does feel a genuine desire inside to re-connect with Skrell, despite her self-doubt and somewhat self-dislike telling her it'll never happen. She's tired of being treated like a pariah.

You could probably ask Paradox for more information regarding why almost two hundred years were spent in hiding, and how the family managed that, let alone why they were being targeted for what was essentially slavery under Glorsh rule.

The point of staying in hiding (bouncing around Skrellian worlds, changing identities, etc), was to evade those they personally wronged during the Era. Even if it wasn't outright being persecuted, being treated like a pariah everywhere you go is 100% likely to eventually take a severe toll on your quality of living. And the point of Kresp being a manipulative person was because that was what she had to become when she was young to survive. She doesn't have skill in much else besides selling overpriced supplies and making sure the people making them are doing their jobs. She'd likely run Cargo very tightly, while ensuring to gain easy report with any HoP she ever saw in order to remain undisturbed.

Off-white is a nice color, leave me alone.

That's some pretty good insight, Menown. Might be one of the most descriptive statements on an applicant's previous rp that I've seen so far. To borrow a quote, "that's high praise."

To circle back a bit, I don't necessarily want people to question applicants on Skrell lore. What I'd /love/ to see is some connection and interest in the "character design" as I sometimes call it. Basically, I think anyone can pop in, read an app, and say "Wow, I feel this way about that character. I actually have a question/interest about a detail." Sleepy did something similar with this app, and that's the sorta stuff I like to see in a response. It gives me the impression that someone actually read through someone's app. In theory, app-characters should be something an applicant worked on and feels invested in. With that in mind, it's a huge plus to an app when someone asks questions like:

"How does this character deal with adversity?"

"Is everything in his life connected to robots?"

and even

"Why is this character an off-white color?"

imho the conversations that spin off of these sort of inquiries really makes apps memorable, and occasionally leads the applicant to consider interesting details about their characters. At least, I've gotten positive feedback about the process a few times which suggests this.

tbh part of the secret meta of apps is post-count. By laws of numbers and averages and other math terms, more posts = more of a chance for quality discussion. (in theory)

I'm sort of rambling at this point, but I hope there's some sort of gem somewhere in the above text.

Discussion is cool. I like the questions I see so far. Looking forward to seeing how it all develops.

How can I question the applicant if I myself do not have a Skrell whitelist nor understand Skrell as well as you or the applicant. I have little interest in understanding the Skrell, but I know Paradox is good at RP usually- no matter how I feel about him. I don't understand what is expected of me in this scenario. All I can do is say he is good for it.

I was about to write a steamy post about my emotions, but, I'd like to keep it simple. I agree with Amory. It's insulting to imply that me or Amory did not read the post. Even with knowledge of Skrell lore, I did not feel qualified to make questions/comments about the post. However, what I do know is that Paradox is a great player and I rarely have trouble with his characters. I feel like mine and Amory's word should be worth something, in the context of a +1.

Try something like this.

"Does your Skrell character like reading fiction books? Do they have favorite sports or movie genres?"

That's how I'd do it anyway. I asked that one lore related question and pointed out a few topics of discussion. I hope that helped the app.

You've basically said that nothing anybody but Sleepy said mattered, and decided to make the community do your job of asking questions of the applicant.

I'm not so sure about all that.

It looks like I gave a list of possible topics which could be expanded upon to improve the app and even encouraged further discussion on the app quite successfully.

You've given some pretty good insight into the applicant's previous rp, Menown, as did the other people who posted here. It's just that only Sleepy's made direct reference to any of the work Paradox put into writing his app, which is what I meant to get across.

@paradox,myman. /Does/ your Skrell enjoy literature? If so, what kinds? If you're not sure yet, what kind do you think he /might/ enjoy down the line? I'm just curious tbqh

But how is asking what their favourite flavour of ice cream going to affect their chances at getting this application through. Why does that matter in the context of me thinking he is a good Roleplayer and can handle the responsibility of playing the specified race of this application. It's not my job to find out the specifics of how his Skrell works. That sounds like your job as the Lore Dev. If Skrell aren't suppose to like Chocolate Icecream, and I ask him what his favourite ice cream is and he says chocolate- it means nothing to me, but if you ask him the same question it has purpose to it in that you know that Skrell dislike chocolate ice cream.

Ey', Paradox. Let me preface this by saying i've had a little experience roleplaying with you, and I had no problems with the experience I have had.

Identify what makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a Human:

Skrell are a prideful, logical, yet very emotional species. This is an extremely decent reply to the question. You've went into their long lifespan, their inability to communicate with other species as well as their own species, their weird perception of gender roles, and how many eclipse the other species of the galaxy in qualifications, as well as their cultural focus on the Scientific process. If I had any problem with this, it'd be that it's maybe a bit too concise, but I like it.

This isn't a bad backstory, it's very unique and definitely far from the norm, though the Lore has outright said these sorts of Skrell exist, mostly as pariahs and fugitives, this won't go into my ultimate opinion, however I do feel it needs a bit more ironing out and detailing. But it does raise a lot of questions, as well. First of all, do you realise how old over 300 is, even for Skrell? I mean, certainly they can live that long, but that's very close to retirement age. There actually is an oldest Skrell in Lore IIRC, let me get their age real fast. Age 551 from the Warble inquirer. Ok, so it checks out. Next!

The idea of being raised into a stockholm syndrome sorta situation is very believable, glorsh actively did this to the Skrell population, gaining supporters from within to report on their own and oust dissidents that way, since they were far less suspicious of each other than his Androids. This is great and I love that, I do however question the manner that they were serving Glorsh, could you go into more detail on the purpose of swindling supplies? What were they swindling? Materials, weapons, food? How did this help Glorsh, or did it only help her family? I'm a bit confused on that. Going on.

When her family was found out, being a fugitive on the run is very true to the original wording on the wiki (That former Glorsh supporters are pariahs and fugitives) however I do wonder how they landed a job with NanoTrasen, is their past buried and hidden from NT? Does NT only have some of the story? Did they immigrate to Biesel and get new credentials since their old wouldn't be proveable unless NanoTrasen contacted a Federation that would want nothing more than for Pras to be extradited? I want you to fill in the blanks here for me.

What do you like about this character?

I like the idea of being a morally questionable Skrell that did dubious things for their greatest villain just to survive. I want to experience the conflict between myself, other Skrell, and the IPC's she would distrust.

I also like the things you like about this. Pras makes an interesting Skrell, but I want you to go into detail of what i've brought up, or at least fill in the blanks. There are quite afew holes. Also, there's a typo I noticed. "their family were heavily" I think this would be had been instead of were.

The sequence of events is pretty much:

Sell food and locally-made medicine to Skrell.

Skrell give us money.

We give a hefty cut to Glorsh-Omega's pockets, Glorsh-Omega allows us to continue living uninterrupted and unharmed. I'm unsure exactly why Glorsh would need this money, but I'm sure it needed to be an economic power as well.

NT would only know from Kresp that they were merchants during the Era, they took careful measures (sob stories, lies) to only let NT know as much as they needed to know. The hope is that eventually they'd be forgotten.

Still a little frighteningly concise as the first paragraph that I quoted, but I have my answers. If I had any feedback it's to maybe try to be a bit more detailed in both future apps and your replies -- But i'll +1 because you gave me what I asked for, and it's possible without disturbing the atmosphere of the Skrell as far as I can see.

That's a link to some steamy nachos, you deserve it. Eat up friendo.

Now about Paradox's application. It's short, and that's fine. Applications don't have to be very long, but at least when it comes to my catbois apps, I push for some fat content for me to dig into. So let's talk about the character design, a morally dubious skrell born in a violent and oppressive society who was conditioned to be that way as a means to survive that society. This skrell who faced those struggles was ultimately pushed out of her enthnostate and traveled afar to human space to seek out a new future. I think the concept is really interesting and exciting, but I don't think this application is a good execution of the idea. It's just too.... Glorsh-heavy. Now, I can't call it unrealistic. The character concept of a highly intelligent yet morally dubious merchant who escaped a historical oppressive regime and seeks fortune in a new world has been done millions of times before. But it's a -really- boring idea when it tries to stand on its own. As it stands, our girl Kres-Weeblo Scouts doesn't really have any personality at all. Ironically for her story being about surviving in a government of the machine, she may as well be a machine. All of her decisions are straight-forward about immediate self-interest. Has she connected with Wilbur Mercer recently? Where's her Skrellmanity? Would she even pass the Voight-Kampff test?

What I want to see in this application are the small things that make for a stronger character. Quality control on Skrell has been kind of lax, and I think you have the potential as a player to make a strong addition to the skrell community and reverse this trend as an active example for other players. What did Kresp'Yeeblo think the first time she heard music? How does she feel about humans and the sensation of living in human space? When she wasn't helping her family do their "business" in her youth and young adulthood, what did she do in her free time? Did she have any friends? Did her parents come with her to the Republic of Biesel? Are they alive? Does she sometimes wish she could have hatchlings? When she came into human space, did she immerse herself in literature on human economic thought to step up her game? What's her favorite food? I know these kinds of things are often considered minor to the greater story, but I think it's important to remember that we're looking for a character built based on lore instead of just a lore story with no real character to be found. For now I don't support this application, but if a few of the questions posed above or even a few ideas of your own are tossed in to fill our the character, that could easily be changed.

Also, one last thing.

dc6bf78e6fa6a49d4bbe2331a224b320.png

Edit: I see you said she likes comic books and adventerous things not including novels. That's a nice start, give us some more! Preferably edited into your application so that it's easier for newcoming readers and whatnot to get the full picture.

How do you plan to roleplay this? I this is the model answer that a lot of people give but will it end up just "blue human with tentacle head who talks really short"?

They have no real concept of gender roles, and may find them incredibly confusing in our culture.

The station is pretty damn liberal as is, with female heads of security and captains, there is no concept of gender roles on station so this doesn't really make them alien.

They did not grow up with a strong hatred of the machine, rather an intense, deep-set fear of what it could do.

can you expand on this more? at the time of glorsh and now, how does their fear differ?

. She was taught at a very young age that one must do whatever they can for Glorsh, or they will be seen as wasting space.

How did she feel about it during the time of glorsh and afterwards? She doesn't seem to resent her way of life.

Kresp made the bold move to abandon the Federation entirely

Was there a catalyst for this, some buildup or just spur of the moment?

Some came with her

WHO ARE THOSE???

Being that moving cargo, getting money, and manipulating the common man with a silver tongue was all she truly knew,

I assume all she swindled back in the federation were skrell, whom can understand their full range of emotional display. how will she be able to hustle crew of humans and other xenos with a poker face stuck on them? showing fake emotions is a very important part of any scam.

I feel like I forgot some things, this is half the old post.

"How do you plan to roleplay this? I this is the model answer that a lot of people give but will it end up just "blue human with tentacle head who talks really short"?"

I like to try to sound as emotionally flat as possible, while being flowery and extremely motivated in Skrellian. Pretty much no matter what emotion I have no matter how severe with someone, I emote staring at them with gaping black eyes

(irritation i just flare my gills or run my hands over my noseslits wearily).

"can you expand on this more? at the time of glorsh and now, how does their fear differ?"

I imagine most Skrell during Glorsh just had a silent boiling rage about it, or an immense panic. It's more of a submissive fear really, more of a 'what can we do to try to get mercy?'

"How did she feel about it during the time of glorsh and afterwards? She doesn't seem to resent her way of life."

She hated it. She didn't, and doesn't, like what she had to do to her own kind in order to please robots. But during that time, she had no choice.

"Was there a catalyst for this, some buildup or just spur of the moment?"

More of a 'fuck it, this is our only choice.'

"WHO ARE THOSE???"

Other family members close to her.

"how will she be able to hustle crew of humans and other xenos with a poker face stuck on them? showing fake emotions is a very important part of any scam."

Great question. One thing that comes to mind is that humans would probably be more likely to trust a Skrell, as they're more intelligent. We'll see.

"What did Kresp'Yeeblo think the first time she heard music? How does she feel about humans and the sensation of living in human space?"

I'm sure she's heard music before, though not of the human variety. The first real human song she ever heard was an older j-pop track in a shopping center on Biesel. That's pretty much the bulk of what she listens to these days. She thinks humans are very strange, very loud both vocally and physically (compared to the skrell, whom are likely more conservative in body language.) She doesn't really think much of them, secretly finding them pretty ugly (I mean, come now) and mentally dull. However, their culture is pretty admirable with how artistic they are, and it's pretty interesting how close they are to each other.

"When she wasn't helping her family do their "business" in her youth and young adulthood, what did she do in her free time? Did she have any friends?"

She had a small group of pals who were taken in by her family (they also helped around, they had to) as their parents weren't around one way or another. It was pretty much just hanging out at home, making comics about four self-inserts meeting a race of aliens (slime-men. yes, she will be very gleeful to meet a promethean) that come to defeat the robot menace.

"Did her parents come with her to the Republic of Biesel? Are they alive?"

They're likely not alive any longer, considering the timeframe, but they did come with.

"Does she sometimes wish she could have hatchlings?"

Absolutely, she always thought of it as a beautiful thing. Being that she cannot get treatment from the Federation, she is unable to at this time. Plus, she's never found the right person.

"When she came into human space, did she immerse herself in literature on human economic thought to step up her game?"

"What's her favorite food?"

Risotto. Although it's a rare treat, she's an absolute slut for amanita pie/jelly.

Hello,

Sorry for the delay.

You've responded well to feedback and there is a derth of creative and constructive conversations going on. Personally I would have kneejerk accepted the app the moment I saw her favorite book was Das Kapital by Karl Marx, but I went back to read through the thread.

Your character does focus a lot on the immediate self-preservation objectives, to the extent that she seems like a plot device more than a character. But with your additional conversations, she is starting to come to life. It can be hard to immediately create a fleshed out character, especially when we are still a bit sluggish on outlining the available culture that Skrell would gravitate towards.

I personally find your answers to everything satisfactory and the conversations fufilling and will be happy to accept this app in leu of Loow, who is away at the moment.
