[1 Dismissal] Baseline and Industrial IPC Paper Printer

Welp, my argument got crushed. I got nothing else to argue against. Although I still think it's just wierrrrd! Who the heck wants to install a printer inside themselves? -
[1 Dismissal] Baseline and Industrial IPC Paper Printer
NebulaFlare replied to NoahKirchner's topic in Archive
As I recall, there is an ongoing, undocumented part of lore that explains away any kind of modifications or deviations from the norm of IPCs: People are still very wary of IPCs, being unlawed individuals, from having access to anything that is not approved body parts. You and I might see a printer to be totally harmless, but an IPC, who can tackle the idea a trillion times a second, can come up with some nefarious idea with a printer. It's a Skrell's worse nightmare. This is why IPCs cannot repair themselves. It prevents them from accessing their bodies and manipulating it to install new equipment. (If this is not part of modern lore, well shoot. This is what I've been going off of the entire time) If this was for a station-bound unit, it'd be fine, because now we have the lawset failsafe in place. They're not built to be citizens, they're built to be tools. What is an IPC anyway? Why build an IPC instead of some other android implemented with laws? ICly, people want to give sapient robots the chance to be sapient citizens, by giving them the way to buy their freedom. They should be made as human-like as possible, but maintain just a few qualities of their robot-likeness to form their own little culture. IPCs were built primarily as indentured servants, not slaves. Slaves are the lawed synthetics. Indentured servants have more freedom and choice. IPCs are caught somewhere between the lawed androids and everyone else in the social hierarchy. In 21st century, our robots are highly autonomous bots that are specialized for specific tasks, and look nothing like IPCs. Somehow in the year 2459 we shifted away from that set and made human-like robots that can complete human-like tasks. Why? Maybe because the whole 'walk upright on two legs' is a right of passage for intelligent and sapient individuals. I dunno. However... Mulling this over a bit, I can see this be usable. I wouldn't mind having my engineering robots have access to a few tools built into them. Pull a screwdriver out of an arm? Sure. -

No. D: That is so wierrrrd! -
As someone who plays security, I must disagree. The speed of applying handcuffs is a lifesaver. I'd rather see roleplay be used to get out of handcuffs, than game mechanics. ((Hey officer, I'll tell you everything you wanna know if you just loosen these cuffs because they're cutting into my wrist - SYKE!!! *steals ID and bolts* )) I do agree with the ability to open doors though. And uncuffing each other would be cool - just make it longer to achieve than normal with free hands.

I don't see what the issue is, really. Voidsuits of the future are going to be very streamlined and comfortable to wear. Miners are supposed to be out there for the majority of the shift, in voidsuits, mining. Even NanoTrasen isn't that sadistic to torture their miners in uncomfortable equipment for prolonged hours. They have slower speed in a suit, and that's plenty enough for me to avoid the suit on station, altogether. I do see miners drop off their load in Research while decked in voidsuits, but I'd argue it's equally more of a hassle to gear up all over again. Also, if you add in something like 'rashes' or 'sweaty' or anything else a poor organic must suffer, that voids off IPCs. IPCs are now valid for running around in full voidsuits because nothing bothers them.

Castille was Rico's buddy, right? Well, Rico works at a salvage shop. He scours junkyards for things to repair and sell. If Rico finds Castille, he could try and activate him again.

I'll PM it. One moment.

BYOND Key: NebulaFlare Total Ban Length: Permanent? Not stated Banning staff member's Key: alberyk Reason of Ban: You, or another user of this computer or connection (-edited out-) is banned from playing here. The ban reason is: Attacking someone a with a fireaxe and logging off when being contacted by staff. Reason for Appeal: Hi! I haven't played on the server for who-knows-how-long and wanted to come by and greet everyone. I'm pretty sure the last time I was online, was October 2016, which would be after the ban (September 2, 2016) . I'm banned, I have no idea who this person is that was banned in my place. My guess is they were using an IP address similar to mine. No one else in my household plays 2D spaceman, and I wouldn't attack someone with a fireaxe unless the roleplay situation warranted it.

Omg, I freaking miss this community. I saw the newsfeed. you guys are doing another Synth arc without me. I'm gonna cry. Maybe I can hop on to say hello this weekend.....

In case any of you even care, I'm still here. Breathing. And yeah. I have continued with my studies, finally going back to college. (Woo!) And that means less time to do other things, including SS13. I meant to leave a message about my current leave, but things got so hectic, demanding, and busy and...well. Yes. Ehem.. If you want to add me over on Skype to keep in touch, please go ahead! It's NebulaFlare. Although, do leave a message and tell me who you are, otherwise I'll just delete you. Hope you're all doing well in the 2D world of spessman~

Allow IPCs to recharge from power cells in hand like food
NebulaFlare replied to SierraKomodo's topic in Archive
Actually, this would make sense for jobs where an IPC can't be on station - like xenoarchaeology. Actually, that'd be the only job that can use it. But I'd still wholly approve of it! It would also make sense for arpee off-station. In my headcanon, I think of IPCs having portable chargers - small devices they can slot their hands in and charge up slowly with. -
I miss Mutiny. It was one of my favorite round types, and I'm sad it got removed. I'd defend it and say it was a good round type, if it was done right. It needs work, and it's got potential to bring out some true chaotic fun. 1. One of the main gripes was the unbelievable objectives. There was this thread that came up with better alternatives: https://forums.aurorastation.org/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=2212&hilit=mutiny+objectives To list a few: a. A war has been declared between [sol/Jargon/Frontier/Synths/etc.] and Tau Ceti. Our station is tasked in constructing Gygax and Durands. re-assign all service and non-human/non-skrell personnel to mining duties, have research produce strictly military-grade weapons. If a xeno species hail from the mentioned star system, ensure they are loyal to NT by whatever means necessary. b. A ship has been detected within the station's sector, before disappearing. It is believed that the ship is carrying a crew of highly trained agents who are to infiltrate the station, and pose as regular crewmembers - become sleeper agents. Find out who these people are, interrogate and do whatever means necessary (implant, for example) to ensure loyalty to NT. c. Due to constant Mendell Rioting, the station is now in a permanent code red. Security may do as they wish to secure the site. d. NT approves of PRA-styled government, and will transform the station to promote communism. A specialized lawset will be uploaded to the AI, and pro-NT propaganda will be broadcasted. Those that rebel will be ousted by security in a secret-police fashion, and 're-educated' accordingly. 2. One of the main gripes was the necessity of a captain to take up the role. To cover this, I'd like to suggest a formal meeting by the heads, and they elect one person to be captain, if no captain is available. This means there only needs to be one loyalist, and one mutineer - two heads of staff at minimum. A box will spawn in the captain's office with the secret code for the newly promoted captain, instead of a captain spawning with their necessary stuff. Included in that box is the code and the implant. The objective will be faxed to the bridge. Discuss. What else can we do to make mutiny better?

[ACCEPTED] Araskael's Tajara App
NebulaFlare replied to Araskael's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
I don't believe I've ever interacted with Araskael, but I do appreciate the backstory. It's very down-to-earth; a big plus. I want this cat to meet my own cat Laikov. -
[Denied] Eternias' Tajaran Whitelist Application
NebulaFlare replied to Eternias's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
Okay, looking at it again, I notice that the 'survive the night' might be plausible on one thing: In the app, this happened when she was 11 years old. Was this 11 Tajaran years old, or 11 human years old? Because an 11 year old Tajara is about the same as a 15 year old human. I can see a 15 year old having the smarts enough to survive a night, while being cocky enough to end up in the situation in the first place. Second, the PRA claims citizenship for all Tajarans, even if they are from NKA or ALA. Obviously, this doesn't sit well with the other two factions. PRA is the only 'officially' recognized government of NT, but NT are also accepting of Tajarans from other government. With all the war and fighting going on, it's a bit of a limbo thing. NT doesn't support either side - they're letting the Tajarans fight it out, and whoever is the winner, they want to maintain good standing with them. I just hope you didn't take the idea of 'All Tajarans MUST be PRA' and box yourself in with that. There are ALA supporters, they're just...not as vocal. (My own cat Laikov actually supports the NKA). More flavor means more conflict, and conflict generates roleplay. -
YOU'RE Azkuyua?! Dang, now I gotta play my Mazaka again. Also, I'm going to say what everyone's been thinking: Japanese lizards.

[Denied] Eternias' Tajaran Whitelist Application
NebulaFlare replied to Eternias's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
Is she homosexual? Or is she just a tomboy? Because I have to point something out: Simply because a person acts in the opposite gender, doesn't nail them as a homosexual. Equally, someone who acts according to their birth gender, doesn't necessarily make them heterosexual. Homosexuality is an orientation, not a personality. I don't know if that's the idea you're trying to convey, if she is homosexual or not. Also, sneaking off to shoot an animal at the age of 11, and then surviving a blizzard with nothing but the skin of her prey to keep her warm - that's pretty snowflakey. How did she ever acquire the skills to survive that? I'm curious as to how old is she. My own M'Sai would probably like to meet this young warrior. It would be a really great encounter. -
[Accepted]NebulaFlare's Skrell App
NebulaFlare replied to NebulaFlare's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
Thank you guys for giving me feedback. Really, it means a lot to see these responses. I was beginning to get discouraged with writing the snippets, thinking I wasted so much time writing something that no one was going to even bother reading. So thank you, Mofo and Owened, for going against that assumption and leaving well articulated responses. In response to a few points and questions... I only hope I get to explore this more. This is when Aveo is still in his youth, and he himself is wondering about the effects of all this 'social reconditioning'. On the outside, he must remain persistent, in fear of social retaliation, and the public denouncement would only break his parent's hearts even more. Even if he grew up outside his parent's social sphere, his parent's influence still held on and he has a very passive view of synthetics. I had another snippet in mind that would explore this detail a bit more - maybe I'll write it up later. Maybe. If you want a synopsis: SPOILER Yep, you mentioning cyberwarfare against possible AIs inspired that idea for Aveo working on viruses. So I should turn around and thank you for the wonderful idea! He's a bit of a narcissist when it comes to his own skills in technology, but that also comes at the expense of not being so well educated in other subjects. I actually had to go and as Loow for input for Skrellian romance. I'm not quite sure if I got the right idea, but I hope I came close. I was hoping Shi'Sqi would come off more as a jerk, and that she was just 'using' Aveo for her own dream to build a family. Aveo was just head over heels for her, and pretty much missed the queues. She had a partner before moving, lost contact with him, picked the best option available (Aveo) and tried to continue with her goals from there. Then came the opportunity to return to where she was originally from, so she had to choose: her old partner, or her new partner Aveo. When she learned Aveo was sterile, she left him for her old love. Bit of a jerk who broke Aveo's heart. Really?! Man, I tried really hard not to make this overtly snowflake! Dayum. Tell me, what is it? Is it at least a bit less snowflake than my previous characters? Aveo is more normal, right? No offense or insults taken, none at all. But now you have made me very curious - what do you mean that this is something I would play? My characters do take little aspects of me, I confess. That's just how I roll(play). Aveo...well, I'm a born-again health nut, and I guess Aveo's going to be dipping his personality into that. Now onto Owened's post. And Haaaah...I see what you did there in quoting me. Having grown up under Kluup, Aveo is likely to be very respectable to their sacrifices, but equally open minded on their stance to synthetics. Then again he might fear retaliation and not be so vocal. I really don't know yet - I can't say. All I know is that Aveo isn't going to snob them. As I was writing, I wanted to give Kluup some semblance of being a hardy survivor. "Kluup's going to be one of those guys who are too stubborn to accept defeat. He'd want to fight his injury and keep walking. Canes and wheelchairs are too human. The skrell are way more advanced than that. If an old veteran needed help from an injury, what would he do? He'd probably be much too paranoid to chop off his legs and get cybernetics...he'd want to keep himself as organic as possible, since he obviously handled EMPs a lot." Bam. Hydraulic leg supports. I always get the feeling that Glorsh might have had a hand in getting sympathizers. Perhaps he used the Skrell as guinea pigs to test propaganda and learn their behaviorism. Just a theory. I don't have an answer prepared for that, really. I assume for the longest time, Aveo was denied any chance to even see them. When that ban was lifted, he was by then a young man. Thanks so much and I'm glad you liked it! Kluup is your average Badass Grandpa Trope http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/BadassGrandpa I figure every decent skrell would have a pool of their own. I had planned a second segment, where Kluup has a second, larger pool, one that is extremely deep and dark. This is the one he uses for his therapy - swimming down to the very bottom of the pool and swimming back up. The one Aveo was in was just a casual soaking pool. He's a tired old man who just keeps a watchful eye on Aveo. In my own headcanon, I see the rebel skrells not having given up on tech completely - just AIs. They would use tech to fight tech - anything to give them an edge. As long as Glorsh couldn't control it, their hideouts would need life supports and defenses. They'd resort to more 'old fashioned' tech, so to speak. And who's to say they didn't make jammers or hacked networks? Kluup would prefer to have Aveo move out of technology, but recognizes that is the only field of study Aveo knows. He's tolerant, and wants to guide Aveo into proper technology fields. Thanks so much for reading it! I'm glad you enjoyed it!! -

[ACCEPTED] Alien Whitelist app - Synth/IPC
NebulaFlare replied to Absynth's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
I'm pretty content with this. Yes, this is good. Accepted, locking and archiving. -
I have never interacted with Sonic ingame, so the majority of my evaluation comes from the app itself. You need to elaborate on yourself some more. What is this character like, mentally and physically? Why are they a good candidate for the job? Your biography is too short and doesn't give enough information on their ability to handle leadership roles. Secondly, the OOC responsibility of being a head of staff: It's very demanding. You'll be a role-model and teacher, yes. But you'll also be a potential candidate for the dynamic events that happens every shift. The responsibilities of each Head of Staff differentiates from department to department. While I agree that one cannot fully experience the position expected of a head without first being a head, you have to understand the responsibilities required for each crew member you oversee. That doesn't just mean mechanics. You control the flow of responsibility in your department. I'm gonna withhold my vote because I have not interacted with you ingame. But I would suggest playing a Quartermaster (at the least) before tackling the position of Head of Security (That is what I assume is being applied for). HoS is one of the most difficult Head positions available.

[Accepted]NebulaFlare's Skrell App
NebulaFlare replied to NebulaFlare's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
Alright. After mulling it over some more, I'm going to make the following changes to Aveo: 1. Something that was a personal concern to me, was that by making him be born during the Glorsh Rebellion, he would end up on the Aurora too mentally old to what I envisioned him to be - around 286 years old. That's almost 300 years old. That's beyond the normal lifespan. That's grandpa skrell. I want ho to have a youthful flare - full of energy, full of wonder, full of himself. Even if I were to bypass it as 'stunted psychological development' or some other trick, it just...doesn't sit right. So now, he was born after the Glorsh Rebellion. He will be born in the year 2266, to parents who were survivors of the Glorsh Rebellion. They are still Glorsh supporters, who went into hiding with a group of other loyal supporters, forming their own, hidden community. They reversed their own sterilization, but Aveo ended up born sterilized anyway, with no hope of reversal. 16 years after he's born, in the year 2282, the Skrellian version of police enforcers finally find their hiding place. They arrest all the residence, but Kluup finds Aveo, takes pity, adopts him, and progressively converts him. This will in effect, cut Aveo's age down to a mere 192 years old - still relatively young in Skrellian culture. ^I want feedback on this point in particular. 2. I will be keeping the whole "I - I actually made a Synthetic Intelligence" dealio, but with minor adjustments. To clarify, Aveo kept contact with his parents, who are imprisoned. These parents, hearing their son's work in technology, give him some algorithms to help his studies. Aveo takes the notes, but doesn't really know what to do with them so he sets it aside. They help him a bit with his job as an CEH, but then one day he accidentally creates his emergent AI. This is in the time period before the year 2388, so before the affirmative blanket ban. Still, probably highly illegal and he'd have gotten in trouble if he was ever exposed. Luckily for him, Kluup hides his disastrous mistake. Now, I may/may not add more snippets and short stories revealing Aveo's life. It'll wholly depend on my time and my singing muse. She's finicky on when she wants to sing. -

[ACCEPTED] Alien Whitelist app - Synth/IPC
NebulaFlare replied to Absynth's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
There's two main ways to go about this: Have Waltina somehow gain freedom legally. Then she's her own unit and can't be blackmailed into doing someone's dirty work. This is something NT would like to avoid when hiring individuals, and it's vital they secure crewmembers that cannot be bullied into attacking their stations. Perhaps she can be downloaded into a shell by the store owner and freed through a contract for a social experiment of working on NT stations. Have Waltina escape her supermarket with assistance, and be at the mercy of discovery. She's effectively a refugee, and if she is ever discovered, she will be forced back into her prior life, or completely wiped. She will need to make up documents and not be registered as Waltina, with only revealing her origins through exploitable information. I don't forsee her lasting very long with this option, as registration with synthetics is a very mandatory thing.
