  1. Honestly the only times I've seen golems used has been to handle an extremely fucked antag. The only recent examples I can think of are the armies of them that got summoned to beat back a horror form during the short time the horror form was a literal tank.
  2. I agree with gecko, decanonisation would take what little function the role serves (pure roleplay/understanding what it is to protect mining). The job is purely roleplay based, and what's the point of RP on this server if it literally cannot develop your character? The majority of conversations relate to experiences of the characters, and for xenoarch their most interesting experiences are the artefacts. A better solution would be to have artefacts that mess with the continuity of the lore break after a short while, and have the procedure be that after basic study on the ship they be sent back to central (and also maybe stop with the old fashioned idea that foreign artefacts are cursed).
  3. Add a circuit printer and the basic equipment for it to the machinist room. We had it for the robotics lab and it actually gave us something to do to impact the round outside of make a mech/hardsuit.
  4. ALSO ALSO ALSO Let's have a named sports team for each city state, since sports is absolutely a conversation topic!
  5. First of all: FUCK YES! This adds to a planet I was already interested in and perfectly captures the more reasonable spirit of it, rather than the weirdly high amount of hosts on station. Second: "Be it open steppes, beaches, the seas themselves, or deep in the mountains, towns cannot escape the changes to their culture or lives that Vysoka’s geography brings to them. " Does this imply that Vysoka has floating towns of some kind? If so, could we get those elaborated on slightly? Third: Specific date for the Velhalktai? It would be really cool if all of the Vysokans could collectively start buzzing about it, as well as if there was a news arc covering it. Would help draw some attention to the lore without being reliant on major conflict (not opposed to a doping scandal mind you) Fourth: I love the emphasis on being a friendly culture, I think that's really needed in the current loresphere with how hostile a lot of planets and species are to outsiders currently. Whether this will translate in game is another thing, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Fifth: "Younger Vysokans are sometimes embarrassed by the common “stereotype” of throat-singing and shy away from talking about it in public." This kind of depth is really needed, where something that directs the flow of RP without being politics or something that heavily stereotypes a group. Sixth: I love all the ties to other aspects of the lore, helps it feel like a real part of the universe instead of each planet suffering isolated writing syndrome, capable of mostly being their own lore in a standalone. Seventh: Having what conflict there is not be just the international stage in small form, and having other cultures show up in relevant roles, is fucking perfect and we need more of it. Between the Himeans causing trouble in the mines, the drug epidemic and the conflct between city states, there's enough to talk about in character without it devolving into wider politics over and over. Huge fucking support for this update, and I hope this sets a gold standard for human lore revisions.
  6. We probably need to give foreign body removal a "yes, if mechanical" clause cause rounds CAN embed into a mechanical arm and I don't wanna call over a physician to remove it
  7. I agree with Redshirt there, I think that dividing species up into their own sections misses the chance for cool interactions and also kind of fails to hammer home how cosmopolitan the city actually is. D6 having specific lore about non-tajarans being specifically labelled tourists comes to mind, it feels weird especially since there are already natural sources of conflict with the majority of tajaran culture anyway, inventing a new conflict seems like adding a hat on a hat. The others already mentioned city size and maps, those would definitely be preferred so people can know exactly where stuff is, but also if a map is made let's not fall into the fiction trap of thinking things gradually get worse as you get further from the nice parts. Having some of the roughest districts next to incredibly wealthy ones would be a great way to have some stories develop as well as add some realistic life to the city. For example in London the fairly deprived Croydon is directly next to the very well off Sutton, and I think the same kind of scenarios would add that extra depth to Mendell.
  8. About what? Don't command staff already co-ordinate with one another via command channel? I've mostly heard dissatisfaction on this front from the bridge crew players I've spoken to cause they're forced to play cabbie and wait for their fare to get back still doesn't explain the 30+ rule, again console manning isn't some hyper-qualified position
  9. Then what else do they do?
  10. Big support, the 30+ rule feels like a knee jerk reaction to some unmentioned non-issue. 30 seems like a really arbitrary age and doesn't line up with any real world parallels at all, especially since this raises lore issues such as "what is the average age of a navy personnel in lore?" and "if it takes so long to train people for large ships, why would a corporation not automate as much as possible?"
  11. All tools that can be used to repair internal organs are included in the equipment for brain removals, so that's kinda a moot point. This is hitting one of my characters especially hard since she was designed to be more focussed around prosthetics, and now that whole aspect has just been ripped out and given to medical because apparently robotics had too much to do between waiting for a cyborg to take stupid damage and the security IPC to charge an antag with a harm baton
  12. Sorry but meteor seems like it would be even more of a nightmare than technomancer. Sure it can get uncreative at times, but there's a few memorable rounds that are really good. The same can't be said for "oh fuck another wall just blew up and vented half the ship again" mode.
  13. I agree with this wholeheartedly. Machinist is a cool concept, but it really feels like more of a downgrade. Everything is harder to get to, there's less duties (which is really bad because roboticists already get nothing to do some rounds) and there's a lot more isolation as they only really share a floor with operations, rather than a department. At least in the science area they got a middle corridor to share with others and meet through, but the only people who pass by their window in this new map are hangar techs.
  14. Also fully agree with this, the new console sprites especially are way too busy and not very distinguishable
  15. Machinist being split from science seems to be a really random choice when aligned with the map's design. They can't actually do any of their job in operations, so they end up being this weird enclave in science with no radio to the people around them, and a slightly redundant radio to the people who are a floor below and only interact when an expedition starts. Feels like the map was designed without these choices in mind. This is making me seriously doubtful about the job switch quite honestly, since it feels like all that's happened is the roboticist has been isolated even further from research and their upgrades, and that they've lost a lot of their duties. I get that no major changes will be made, but honestly it feels like this is a major change that SHOULD be made else you'll get an issue of the job being even more unintuitive to new players. Also there's the issue that neither the machinist room nor robotics bay has access to multitools and therefore the creation of IPCs and voluntary AI cores is now impossible.
  16. The basic idea: Players can spawn with a single poster of their choice from the menu Implementation: Insert it under the "general" section with a poster number (like what you find in maints) as well as a short title of what it is. So for example "Old Aurora Ship" or "Pinup Girl Cindy" and so on.
  17. I believe I mentioned later in the thread as well, but their attitude to work quite literally can be the defining issue of whether they are at risk of dying, which in some ways can mean that work would come before all else. However for a drastically different aspect, the aspiration for freedom would likely come into a close second, as that would mean that they could secure their existence and be allowed some flexibility in their lives. While IPCs are not 1:1 mimics of humans, their desire to have options in their lives, and the wish to achieve those varieties of options, would be able to heavily influence their actions in the long term. Certain aspects would also not induce as much fear, for example pain would have very little leverage, however their more vulnerable position to electronic tampering would hold far more weight than it would to a human. One of the main behaviour patterns that Elbee picked up from their time at the library was the use of their memory to recall anecdotes that would hopefully be relevant to the conversation. They have also kept their interest in general knowledge, gaining the belief that if they are able to recall and personally experience many books, they can accurately recommend books to customers at the library without as many errors. They do miss their old library, especially due to the size, however they had already learned that reminiscing to others is somewhat alienating and can make customers feel uncomfortable. Elbee spends much of their time reading, or performing other methods of research around the subject they are currently fixated on. While these could be seen as normal interest times to a human, due to the processing power and singlemindedness of an IPC, Elbee could be more likely described to gain short hyperfixations on a subject for days at a time, rather than months at a time. This subject could consume their entire attention outside of working if interesting enough. Elbee also makes a great effort to ensure that they are being polite, and that their customer is comfortable in their environment. This could extend from offering to gather books for the customer, to bringing them non-staining drinks and snacks if asked nicely.
  18. After talking with Bear in DMs, we managed to sort out what went wrong. It was entirely a communication breakdown and an overzealous HoS, and now we've spoken I'm happy to close.
  19. BYOND Key: Twathead Character Names: Mia Campbell, Albion-Blaise Caladius Species you are applying to play: IPC What color do you plan on making your first alien character: N/A Have you read our lore section's page on this species?: Yes. Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph format. One paragraph minimum per question. Why do you wish to play this specific race: IPCs as a whole are interesting due to their lack of technical emotion. While they have the ability to feel approximations of emotions, they do not have access to a full spectrum of emotions, instead having a sort of series of checkable boxes. This can either work really well for a character or fail miserably, depending on the type of roleplayer behind the character. I would love to give this a try myself simply for the experience, and an enjoyable character would be well worthwhile. I would also like to see if I could manage to fill a rarely played role without having to compromise this aspect. Identify what makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a Human: One major factor is the aforementioned lack of spectrum emotions. While an IPC is able to mimic emotions, it is still compartmentalised to some extent. Another major difference would be the fact that instead of the stakes of their job being a career change or unemployment, and IPCs work ethic is a matter of life or death for them if they are owned. This differing aspect of the stakes in their work would mean that if an IPC were told that their job was at risk for whatever reason, they would have very little reason to not change short of a death wish. Character Name: Elbee-5 Please provide a short backstory for this character: Elbee is a baseline IPC that was created in 2460 for the purpose of being a librarian, as one of ten test models. With this in mind, their personality was designed with the intent to create a machine that would not only naturally attempt to assist others, but would also be a studious learner. This capacity for curiosity as well as their helpful demeanour landed them in a large library in Phoenix Park, where they were deployed as a library assistant as well as customer support for library-goers that were wary of the automated recommendation terminals. Through this work, Elbee had access to many books and resources, which they often spent large amounts of time pouring over, sometimes not even leaving the library for days on end simply so they were able to study further. The library could not last, however. One of the primary issues was financing, Elbee consumed more energy than was initially projected by the accountant and the library was struggling to make the maintenance costs for them. While they did not sell Elbee, due to a fondness from the Head Librarian, the library took unto itself a sponsor, namely Nanotransen. This sponsor eventually became a merger, and with the library's merging into Nanotransen came its end, as it sat atop tens of millions of credits worth of retail land. It would eventually be turned into a new shopping centre, and with the demolition of the library, Elbee was repurposed for the station library aboard the Aurora. What do you like about this character? I haven't yet seen a librarian IPC, partially because librarian is a seldom played role anyway, but I also feel like people haven't seen it as a possible job either. This would essentially be a budget service IPC of sorts, without the expensive or flashy models and instead being replaced with a semi-genuine fascination with their task as well as a practiced friendliness rather than a programmed one. I also think that the books on the station are quite fun, so having an excuse to just grab whatever book I want until I need to serve someone would be quite nice. How would you rate your role-playing ability? Due to not being neurotypical, most of my characters struggle with being such. However, I would argue that it could give a level of authenticity to an IPC. I would also say I can usually handle small talk fairly well, as well as talkng in depth about a subject my character would know about, although sometimes I do essentially just quote a wiki page or two.
  20. The basic idea: The item book can be selected in the General section of the loadout screen. It would cost one point. Once the item is selected, you choose your book by either using a scroll menu of all the ingame literature or by typing the ss13bn number into a box for it to use an SQL query to find. Bam, you have book. If you put the wrong ss13bn in, either a pop-up would say so, or you just get a blank book, or the wrong book entirely. Why?: So characters can read a book without relying on a librarian all the time.
  21. BYOND Key: Twathead Game ID: one before cff-dlod Player Byond Key/Character name: Isak Vidas Staff involved: None Reason for complaint: During the incident of the AI becoming lawless, the captain had made my roboticist an interim research director to handle the issue. The issue came up when the captain started disregarding the director he had put in charge of handling the AI and instead started making direct threats to the AI, with no intent to change his position. He also sent in an armed team against the AI, totally derailing the progress the director had made with no clear benefit or even logic behind approving the move. Then, after the AI had been destroyed, despite nearly delaminating the crystal in the process, the captain then ordered the director to be arrested for apparently assisting the AI, despite the fact that the director had only appealed to the AI to avoid violence, and offered solutions other than the destruction or relawing of the AI. This all honestly feels as if the player was set on an ending and wasn't willing to work with others in any way. Did you attempt to adminhelp the issue at the time? If so, what was the known action taken by administration/moderation? No, I'm still unused to ahelping poor rp and the conversation was moving so fast I was too occupied. Approximate Date/Time: 29/11/21 between 22:45 and 23:55 pm GMT
