  1. Just....just gonna.... leave this right here...
  2. Oh god, yes yes yes yes yes PLEASE yes this. Between finding a safe/quiet place to write and forgetting or losing or needing to put away the pen, I've lost an hour before trying to write out a few paragraphs. While it's simple to just pull up notepad next to the game and do it in there, a nice little reminder to get out ye pen would be very welcome.
  3. However, you can totally cook them, which makes them quite useful to the chef in the kitchen! I don't mind 'em where they are, even if they are literal xenoflora.
  4. I'm all for more hard-boiled. But I'm not sure this is hard boiled. With that said, absolute seriousness is what almost no-one goes for in this game, here or elsewhere. If someone wants to be Dick Tracy and someone wants to put in the time to make that happen in the game art and code, God bless you.
  5. Thank you for the explanations, both of you. If it's coming back sometime, in some form, my jimmies are less rustled. Better safe than sorry! Now, must go make pasteable copies of everything since records and flavortext don't seem to update when you change characters in-game.
  6. Mmmmh. I was using it a couple of weeks ago without any trouble. I appreciate the bit of standardization, and as far as I know the accounts system wasn't linked to the one here, or BYOND's. That's too bad, though.
  7. I can't log into this anymore. Please fix. I need it. Why were logins disabled? I have records to write. More people should use it. I should use it. You should use it. Halp.
  8. I like this concept. As someone who once worked nights in a very, very brightly lit room, I can totally vouch for how easily it trashes the sleep cycle. Having this be a feature in the corridors seems like a nice gesture to the (human) crew on the surface, but the company would clearly be disregarding that most of that crew comes from different worlds and time zones. It smacks of a good idea that was ultimately poorly implemented, and it seems pretty NanoTrasen to me. Edit: Thiiiis. Spooky shift at night? Vampire's delight!
  9. This is a novel bit of backstory with some potentially built-in development goals. The unrealistic/dishonest context that the adult entertainment industry exists in makes an interesting jumping off point for a new intelligence that wants to learn from organic behavior (assuming that is one of its goals). It also might give Peaches an unusual amount of insight into human desires and motivations that most machines either don't understand or bother with. She could be weirdly relatable while still coming across as incomplete and developing, depending on how it's played. ...And if you can stick to that speech quirk, you will make a more consistent roleplayer than me! I'd pull my own hair out trying to write like that. I have a few questions on the backstory, since with IPCs there isn't a ton of strictly-established lore to check for. There seems to be a desire for Peaches to leave the space in which she came into being, and she took a few big risks to do it. What drove her to want to go from being relatively anonymous and safe on the darknet, to being easily identified in a positronic chassis? If her methods of theft and hacking were discovered as is implied in the story, does that mean that someone is aware of those crimes now? Has the persona that she assumed online carried over at all into her new form of existence, or was it entirely a deception for her scheme? There are plenty of potential angles for a character here, and I'm curious as to what most closely motivates her as you've imagined it. I'm asking the above because I'm curious more than critical, but I think an important question for an IPC character to be able to answer is "why do I want to work for NanoTrasen in Tau Ceti?" Obviously we all have to reconcile that in order to play on the server, but I don't quite see the link between character and company up there yet. Given the scrutiny that IPCs have been going through in the system, hiding in plain sight might be more risk than it's worth. What made it more appealing than leaving for a more tolerant part of inhabited space? I'd also be interested to see how you expand on the idea that while Peaches herself is entirely uncontrolled, she believes in a measure of control on synthetic life. Is this idea evident of some built-in hypocrisy on her part, or would she ever seek or want to enforce directives on her own behavior? Does she feel exempt from the judgements she's made on her fellow intelligences, and if so, what makes her different? All told, I think this has just a ton of potential, and I really enjoy the concept. I've seen Ginger a few times, but I don't have a full impression of how you play or write, yet, so the best I can do is to interrogate you in your application thread. Best of luck, and I'm hoping to see more soon!
  10. I enjoy the attention to detail here. It's great to add more flavor the game world, especially when it gives a nod to Elyra's earthly heritage. There's even a nice bit of history to go along with the song too! As someone who enjoys world-building, I hope more people decide they'd like to submit stuff like this. The lyrics seem appropriately patriotic for an anthem. Like any song though, it's hard to imagine how good they sound without the actual music. Is there any track you can imagine this being played to?

  12. I love the concept, but in practice it's going to be hell to enforce. If it's plastered in neon paint all over the server rules, maybe it stands a chance.
  13. I necro-revive this thread eight months hence, hijack its topic, and triple post in it to inform you all that Sunless Sea is: - Still good - Still purchasable - Coming out with DLC in like three weeks So you should still buy and play it. The Fallen London writers are still going strong here. Also, zubmarines, people. Zubmarines. I'll go sit in the shame corner now.
  14. Lab Assistant (with cameo by Xenobotanist)
  15. Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to read the application and leave feedback in one form or another. I appreciate it! It's been one month since I posted this. I've previously contacted an admin asking how to proceed without a response, so this is just a selfish bump for hoping the thread might be looked at and assessed.
  16. Reading the app makes me feel like you took the time to make someone who is believable while being faithful to what lore is there. While I can't speak from experience in terms of Skrell specifically, the information and your motivations seem well-reasoned and thoughtful. What you mentioned about why you want to play the species - how they are rebuilding from an event that effectively ended their society - is something I also find to be one of its most interesting bits of history. While it seems like several races in the lore have gone through recent or unprecedented upheaval, Skrell definitely win the prize for the most traumatic experience as a civilization, and also for coming out of it on top again. As for you, the player, you're all-around good! I enjoy interactions with Ahmad and Pioneer, and I observe Raymond in enough rounds to feel like I have a good sense of your writing style. You treat the setting and your fellow players with respect, and I feel like you'd be at home playing any species. Here's to hoping you're warbling soon. I have a wonder about the character's nature - he certainly seems to have a wanderlust, and a desire to immerse himself in the wider world. Was he somehow compelled to put that on hold when he decided to work for NanoTrasen for a decade, or is that simply not a lot of time to someone with such a long lifespan? Was there something about the human career arc or corporate employment that particularly interested him?
  17. The timeline of humanity...the suggestions to change revolvers and viruses... It's all the work of the la li lu le lo! But if this is a serious suggestion, no thank you! Viruses feel pretty easy to get already, as interesting as it is to target all the Siik'maas speakers, or all the warblers. Makes it far too easy to conduct ethnic cleansing as an ambitious virologist.
  18. Seriously, though, an interesting idea, if feasible to easily code. Maybe consider applying it to things like rubber rounds too, since they strike me as pretty likely to do the same? *Braces for the people who know guns to insert informed opinions*
  19. Jackboot edit:Done! Name: Hongsun Park Engineering Institute Link to Lore Canonization: Focused Field: Applied High-Energy Engineering Overview: HPEI was founded in 2419 in Phoenixport on Biesel, to educate engineering students on the emergent applications of the phoron present in Tau Ceti. Two years after its discovery, phoron's promising potential for use as an energy source prompted founder Park Seong-ja to establish the institution, with the expectation that the excitement surrounding the resource would make securing investment and donations for the school a simple matter. This hope was quickly fulfilled, as private and government interests combined to fund what they believed would prove to be an important piece of the puzzle to solve the Alliance's energy crisis. Park and her trustees have since striven to stay at the forefront of applied phoron technologies, using the relevance of the field to survive the century's economic and political crises. When NanoTrasen effectively bought the system in 2452, the board moved quickly to closely integrate itself with the megacorp. Though young by the measure of more prestigious universities, HPEI sets itself apart on Biesel for its aggressive marketing and pursuit of emerging, high-risk fields. In no small part thanks to a close partnership with NanoTrasen, they are one of the few educational institutions in Tau Ceti to participate in the megacorp's Bluespace, xenobiology and exotic particle research programs, offering invaluable experience to their most promising students. As a for-profit institution, acceptance rates and tuition are both high, allowing the school to partially finance its own expensive pursuits. While the graduation rate is above 99%, NanoTrasen tends to cherry-pick the best of each graduating year for placement in their various research and development programs. Being limited in their choice of employers post-graduation, this selection often prompts students to compete and be recognized at the top of their class. Campus is a sprawling locale on the southern edge of Phoenixport, accommodating a network of lecture halls, dormitories, service buildings, a retail outlet, a recreational complex, and multiple laboratory complexes. While there is no accredited athletics program, the school hosts several recreational leagues for activities ranging from association football to e-sports. The school's mascot is a friendly, fictional, labcoat-clad IPC named QUARK, but the recent political climate has prompted a review to potentially replace it. Main employer of graduates: NanoTrasen Corporation (formerly various SolGov institutions) Current Dean: Park Min-soo, Seong-ja's son, currently resides as Dean of the university's College of Engineering, which encompasses the vast majority of its programs. While his aging and functionally-retired mother remains the figurative leader of the institute, Min-soo has taken the majority of administrative responsibilities for himself. Famous Graduates: Invent as necessary! HPEI is a young school, but there's potential for people to have pioneered post-warp and phoron technology here.
  20. I say yes. We accepted Nar-Salt because someone clicked the button and made it funny. This seems to be a thing people enjoy, and it is rare.
  21. Hiya! Nice to have you, welcome. I'm a Paradox fan myself, and play way too much of HOI4 and Stellaris, along with some EU4.
  22. Riding on a very good but totally separate suggestion I had the thought (again) today that there needs to be some way to remove the Horsemask forced on someone by Curse of The Horseman. It used to be possible in old code with the assistance of chemistry, but right now I don't think it is able to be removed without the wizard's direct help. Generally, my thought is that wizards who use this spell as a temporary diversion or intimidation tool are fine. Those who use it to leave them on players heads forever, so they are unable to communicate for the rest of the round, are not. Not being able to talk is not terribly fun, especially on a large scale when someone gets a little too horse-happy. Pair it with disabling the PDA messaging server, and someone is basically resigned to being a mute doofus in ME emotes for however long is left in the round. It sitnks. I want there to be some sort of option to get it off my character's head, without making the spell a trivial thing to counter. Some quick thoughts: - The acid method from old code still sounds pretty good (requires medical, dangerous?) - Surgical procedure to separate the mask from the face (also requires medical, also dangerous?) - Resist a la handcuff removal (stay still for 5+ minutes? Brute damage to the head?) - Have it naturally expire as magic after a set duration? - Separating the wizard from his or her equipment, or destroying the equipment dispels the effect? - Crew have to otherwise assist someone to get it off their head? Prompt interaction with people? If there is a way to remove it without a forgiving/living/present wizard, I'm not aware of one. Does anyone think this should be a thing, or have better ways to suggest it?
  23. I would totally be up for adding Ninja into the secret rotation. They seem a good bit weaker than wizards, but the additional RP angle is welcome, and it would stop me from voting for it in vain all the time. Borers would be interesting too, though the borers might need some focusing in terms of a team objective for the round to carry it through a few hours. I feel like they suffer from the rev problem of needing motivation to do more than the minimum. Also...last I played with them they were super deluxe buggy.
  24. Behold Sofia Pennington's true power, and despair.
  25. I feel as though the application should be judged on its content and the prediction of how a character will behave in a role with elevated responsibility. We have many regular players, command players, and staff who, at times, do silly things. It's part of what makes this fun. In my view, a valid criticism of an application should focus on either the character as described in the application, or the regular OOC behavior of the player. And if it's the latter, I hope it would be a criticism focused on whether or not the player is prepared to follow the rules and make the round better for people. It's not necessarily wrong to find dancing around on code red absurd, but it's also not a great measure for how the player will do in charge of a department, either. Also, people shouldn't be afraid to post in these threads. If criticisms are objective, they shouldn't be taken personally.
