  1. Reminder that Zahra Karimi is neither crazy nor a full-fledged scientist. Still, I'll take it.
  2. I mentioned some of the above concerns to Muncorn directly, but I'm also chiming in here to agree with Dancer and Fiskap. Attempting to control player behavior by rewriting core species lore hasn't worked out that well in the past, and taking away freedom of creativity rarely contributes to a richer story. The decision to do so feels arbitrary without more explanation to rationalize it. I had a long post planned, but I think I don't need it here. To summarize, I feel that the lore of a roleplay community should be in service to the players of that community, and the previous implementation of positronic lore may have done that better than this. For me, part of what makes synthetic 'life' both compelling and sympathetic in our setting is the way it skirts the line between something false and something real. It's the question that has given the plot of the last year any sort of impact at all. Retconning it so that none of the synthetics aboard could be compelling or sympathetic without jumping through some serious hoops (or maybe being reserved for antag/staff characters) takes away much more than it gives, and seems like an example of the story trying to serve itself.
  3. The establishment is full of tyrants. Down with the bourgeoisie, Best wishes and safe travels, to anyone travelling for Christmas this weekend. Don't consume too much egg-nog, or other holiday abominations.
  4. Agreed. Some explanation on why the staff feels this shift toward realism on the manifest is worthwhile might go a long way in helping move some of the opinions here. It has been mentioned here and elsewhere that this kind of change is in line with overall direction the staff has decided to take the server in. Some illustration of that direction in a public space is something we could use in this discussion.
  5. People still ask that you put down which position you're applying for. It's all good! Will edit this with actual feedback later today Edited, a bit later than I said I would: Did you? Your character doesn't meet the requirements on our version of it. If you already understood that, what makes Robert an exception to the rules? I can dig it. There's more to this and rounds/circumstances can change the reality of it, but I generally agree. How did Robert convince NT (I assume NT is his employer here) to hire him without even basic schooling? Keep in mind most forensics and investigative work requires an undergraduate or many years of experience as a technician elsewhere. As written, Robert is barely qualified to be a detective, let alone a Head of Staff. I don't understand what's being said here. Are you saying the quality of your RP dips when OOC is spammy? You'd otherwise be perfect?
  6. Hello there! Thought I'd give this a read! I don't have much experience with the one character you named, so my feedback will mostly be on what's written here. Firstly, an item of errata out of the way: Don't be so sure... As for the rest: Keep in mind this whitelist also unlocks all Command Staff positions, not just the IAA I (believe) you're applying for. Any plans to utilize any of those other job slots? Why or why not? Conclusions like this are nice to see. How do you imagine a Head character might typically accomplish this? What defines an exciting roleplay to you? I'm not sure I agree with this on the face. Having a whitelist might mean that a player understands certain expectations and has certain knowledge, but I'm not sure that is enough to place them on any sort of pedestal. Speaking specifically to responsibilities of Command characters on our server, what things are they capable of that can affect the people around them? Aside from teaching players in their departments, are there other things the players of these characters might be responsible for in any given round? Fair enough! Fun is against the rules in IA, you know. I had no big questions regarding the backstory, though I don't make the connection between the family tragedy and the appeal of regulatory work to Marcus. Does he see that component as some sort of driving force behind an efficient operation? With so much security experience, would he want to suddenly jump tracks to administration? I see the education and the internship program, but he's also been a professional in another field for quite some time at this point. This is (to me at least) a question for other people to use as much as you. Are there areas of weakness or difficulty that you find hard to play with Marcus, or might want help with? Opportunities for other players to interact and assist are always good. This is a bit how I view my own agent, though she's a bit older and more worn down. The potential conflict of corporate interest with the need for a humane touch is what I like most about IA in the first place. Thank you for taking the time to respond to these thoughts, and best of luck!
  7. Hello there! Welcome to the server. I have no idea who you are, so feedback here will be pretty much entirely for what's written in the application. Firstly, you may want to consider formatting your application so that it is not a wall of soul-crushing bold text. The template post does ask you to write your answers outside the bold markup! With that out of the way.... While this is partially the reason I applied myself, I think it's worth answering as though you were targeting multiple command positions. While the expectations placed on an IAA are different compared to Heads or the Captain, you'll be getting access to all those slots at once with this whitelist, and there's theoretically nothing stopping you from making Captain Urist McBadbeard the moment your account is whitelisted. In my opinion, with all Head roles, there's more to the job than just playing the job slot. Since all we have to go on is what you write down here, what sort of answer would convince people who don't know you to give you the chance? I feel as though there could be more to answer this with. Let's say you're a CMO for a shift and your entire medical team is not only competent, but exceptional at their jobs. Are you then purposeless? What other reasons does a Command character exist in the round for, other than to teach? Additionally, since you're applying for IAA and they have no department to teach in the first place, what do you consider the purpose of an Internal Affairs Agent to be, OOC? Keep in mind that they are distinct from CCIA Agents on our server, who often handle cases that persist between rounds. Also, at the end of that paragraph, you wrote this: What qualities made him a great CMO, in your mind? The two questions are similar, but I don't think they're similar enough to warrant the same answer. As a Head of Staff, or even an IAA, you have access to tools and information that can change the course of a round, and therefore the enjoyment of other people around you. Are you aware of what some of those tools are, as they pertain to our server? Some things Heads are expected to know, even when they may not be written down in the most obvious spots. There are regulations concerning alert statuses, evacuations, the nuclear bomb, and other things, as well as OOC rules/guidelines concerning loyalty implants, characters in the Captain job slot, the validity of character employment records, and more. Are you aware of some of these expectations? Additionally, you write that you would try to help other characters by assisting them in their positions to become better in them. Do you consider this appropriate for an Internal Affairs Agent? Backstories are not as important to me as the above, when I'm looking at Head apps, but they are still important for gaining a sense of how you write and think. I can think of a few comments for Dirnt, here: Since you mention this desire to lead a couple times in the backstory blurb, you should be aware that IAA has next to no actual command power aboard the station. While they have bridge access and a means by which to independently contact CentComm, they can't typically overrule a Head of Staff decision, even if that decision is a blatant violation of regulations. IAAs also have no ability to control or make most demands on the rest of the station's staff. With these things in mind, is the Internal Affairs division something Dirnt would have targeted? While it's not necessarily bad to project a little of the self onto a character, these answers tell us nothing about Dirnt, since none of us know you well yet. What other things did you consider when you were creating him that you might be able to share with people trying to learn about him? Does he have a central conflict, or a quality you enjoy, or find hard to play? It would be nice to see some evidence of his ability to be a natural born leader in the provided backstory. What did he do in the years after school? How does he handle crises or dilemmas in a way that allowed him to stand out? What elevated him over the mess of other people targeting his desired job? While it's possible to take statements like "he is a natural born leader" at face value, it helps to illustrate that for the people who don't know him. Thank you for taking the time to respond to these, and best of luck.
  8. Hiya Strudel! Firstly, I've played a good bit with this player's engineer character, MAKE, and enjoyed them quite a bit. They're pleasant to roleplay with, they do their work well, and they seem mindful of the enjoyment of people around them, which I always like to see in a Head character. I've only played with KELT once, and unfortunately they were in Xenobiology, which is a place I rarely go - but I'm looking forward to learning more about them in the game. For now, I have a positive impression of the player, for sure. With that in mind, I'll go through the application and quote things I have a comment or question on! You can do this in a whole bunch of jobs that don't require a whitelist. Is there something specific to Aurora's command staff that you're curious about here? Is there an appeal in other things about being a Head that you haven't mentioned yet? This hits mostly on what I'd want to see. I don't usually like the notion that the Heads should be babysitting, but it does happen at times. Absolutely agree with helping other players adhere to RP guidelines, assist in aiding enjoyment, and gently helping with job competency when necessary. I think there are some more considerations here, concerning the control Heads have over the round, and the rules or policies they need to know. For example, are you aware of the current OOC policy concerning the Captain role, or the knowledge of the nuke? What about regulations regarding alerts, ERTs, evacuations, and other things that affect the players in the round, or the round itself? Onto the backstory! This is less important to me than the above in terms of a Head whitelist, but is always worth considering. Your paragraph explaining KELT's learning makes it seem like a fairly organic method. Did it learn all it knows by observation, or was there learning done outside the lab work that it performed as part of its technician job? It seems that while working everywhere would give KELT the ability to work as a scientist in any of the roles you mention, there's no mention of acquiring the skills (or desire) to manage people who work them, which is a big part of a Head's IC responsibility. It's an interesting idea for a lawed synthetic being to target a command position, but it also raises a couple of questions for me. Would they be considered for such a responsibility even though it is impossible for them to break their laws (even when it might be in the best interest of the crew or the company to do so)? For that matter, what laws make up its lawset? While some command staff members are loyalty implanted and face similar concerns, Synthetics with lawsets are more strictly held to specific, logical expectations that might hinder their ability to make judgements. Also, how would you play out a law conflict, if one were to occur? I like the desire to learn and the idealism for synthetic/organic co-existence expressed in the backstory, and I think it suits an IPC with a scientific leaning. However, I don't know if it expressly qualifies them to be a Research Director. There are organic crew who will have been targeting the same position for longer than KELT has been alive. Aside from the likely savings in salary payments, why should NanoTrasen choose KELT over some other eligible candidate? For now, that's all I've got! Good luck with this.
  9. Tajara are by far the most played alien race on station, the idea that you don't seem to get the chance to play with them much sounds bizarre. At least on the surface level. I'd argue there is a current issue of Tajara players being exclusive, using on Siik'maas, banding together, and being condescending. Do you think Hadassah Al-Hazmi will be able to socialize with others and avoid exclusion without going to the other side of the spectrum and becoming too human? I sure hope so, though it may take a while to warm up to people in character in order to do that. I picture her as unhappy and distrustful of the situation she's in, and she's probably looking to keep a low profile. With that in mind, closed characters don't get anywhere, so it's a matter of making the right opportunities for other players to chip at her shell. I don't see her only consorting with her own kind - it would be impractical in medical anyway, where she's likely to be stuck for portions of each shift. Hive actually did this not me- small knit-pick. Is that right? I could have sworn I had a grammar-Nazi meltdown over it not so long ago. Thanks, Hive. Get out. Good description, but I think it's important to changed modernized to modernizing, as the same Tajara which might receive highly advanced futuristic space medicine from a humanitarian aid hospital down the road might also be working an antiquated farming plot with a hand scythe. There is a distinct juxtaposition of modernity and the old world present in society. That said, the rest of this is very finely put and true. Alright, that seems good to keep in mind. The advancements she isn't familiar with will probably evoke some wonder or curiosity, especially for someone who's never been offworld before now. The goal of the NKA is to establish a constitutional Monarchy with a parliament rather than an enlightened monarchy or any sort of benevolent absolutism. There are factions in the NKA which want to see the king take a role of more power within the NKA, as well as factions which want to see Parliament get more power, but as it currently stands the power is pretty evenly divided between the two. This is referred to as the struggles between the military and the civilians on the wiki, as veterans and current servicemen are more pro-king while your average non-combatant civilian is more pro-Parliament. When I wrote that, I don't think I was intending to refer to the specific type of government. When I put down 'enlightened' and 'benevolent' I meant it to suggest her belief that the royal family has learned from the past, and will make the right choices for the good of its subjects. Given the chance to express her opinion, she'd say that the parliamentary system is one of those choices, and represents both the responsible sharing of power and proof that the power structure will not be like the one their world first rebelled against. Whether she's right or not is up for debate. With the backstory material, I wanted to get the understanding of the lore/recent events on the application, and not bloat the section with a wall of text. Some of the things you're asking for I don't decide with characters ahead of time, and I don't think all of them should be revealed on paper if they are, but with the hope of painting a more complete picture to approve or deny, I can explore a bit! I picture her as a rare lover of books, thanks to both a love of learning and the challenge associated with finding good printed stories that weren't torched. She could have spent years tracking down noteworthy titles to house in a small private collection, which she would have had to leave behind when she expatriated. She might joke to herself that if the times weren't already so 'interesting' she would consider authoring historical fiction. That, like so many other things, feels like a distant dream in the war-torn present. The theatre is a luxury that she misses dearly from easier times, and while she deeply respects the storytelling tradition, and the people who have the gift to act, she's easy to put off with a poor performance. She's a quiet lover of comedies, and in rare moments of mirth she's likely to crack a referential joke or witticism of her own. It is entirely okay if only she gets it, but there's that hope that someone around her might, too. She believes she's a good cook, but this is probably not true. Either no-one in her family knows better, or they've never had the heart to bring it up with her, since it seems to instill a bit of pride. It's entirely possible she just has no refined palette. The station's microwaves are depressingly alien devices she'd never have found in her kitchen, and she's unlikely to trust them. As with all other Tajaran applications I've reviewed, I must once again that being unique or a snowflake does not automatically mean being bad. With the exception of Poslan there are surprisingly few cripple Tajara which is strange considering the massive three-way world war going on back home. There's something probably to be said about modern medicine, but there's also something to be said about the poor medical care people from the NKA would receive. "Having to rely on people she might consider enemies in order to function in her job is a reality I'd enjoy her to have as she starts to develop." There's a surprising lack of argument, disagreement, and especially violence on station despite the fact that some people might find themselves working alongside ex-soldiers who might've killed their family, and even though some factions advocate genocide against others. I'm not saying Tajara players should be at each others throats all day every day, clawing each other and getting thrown in the brig every round- but they should be more at odds. How do you feel Hadassah will interact with other Tajara knowing they could have served on the very frontline which threatens to snuff out her nation? Do you think it'll come off more as biting her tongue, or getting along in species solidarity? Hadassah's not an experienced traveler beyond her corner of Adhomai, and is quite worried about the prominence of the PRA government offworld. She'd want to bite her tongue in order to feel safer in an unfamiliar place (and to avoid any unnecessary scrutiny from PRA authorities), but she is proud and opinionated, and could probably be provoked into a debate that's more telling of her ideals, or into making some other slip up in an impassioned moment. If relationships with the Tajaran crew develop over time, I can see her growing to be more tolerant of opposing views, but she definitely feels strongly enough not to accept them at face value. At her best she'd want to try and convince her friends, and at her worst she wouldn't be above lashing out at someone who pressed the right buttons. Thank you for the point-by-point! The clarifications and questions are much appreciated.
  10. This is a good observation that I also agree with. I feel like the player has been very receptive since this thread was put up.
  11. There were no words for how all that played out. Regarding the OP, people seem to get extremely cranky OOC about NT backing any kind of illegal action, falsified, non-canon, or otherwise. If people on the whole could stomach the premise it might be fun, but I'm not sure they would. To me, it unfortunately sounds like a bunch of Deadchat salt, ahelps and complaint threads waiting to happen. For it to work as described, you'd also need the people you killed early on to stay connected and interested in being the ERT that gets called. I find that people who are upset over a death either disassociate themselves from the round or disconnect, and the earlier someone gets taken out the more likely they are to grumble.
  12. If realism is the goal, why not restrict people to their one job universally? No-one is 'realistically' hired to do surgery some days and xenobiology other days, or to be the Director of an elite research team on Mondays and Wednesdays, but only a plasma researcher on it during Tuesdays and Thursdays. Or to be a security officer sometimes, and a cadet or detective when there are already four officers on staff. And really, from the standpoint of having an administrator of a facility, it's not very realistic to swap the Captain or Command Staff out for new faces at all, either. Policies would just be confused messes with the leaders rotating in and out of any real base. Jester Stamos should probably just run the place in a 'realistic' setting, and woe to the dozen other Captains standing in line for his job, because he's there for the duration like any appointed leader. The reason I think we don't go for that kind of realism anywhere on the manifest is because it would get in the way of people enjoying either their characters, or the round, without adding anything to the play. With this rule in effect, promoting a character you like to Captain pretty much removes them from public view, as long as someone else can beat them to the Captain slot consistently. I'd rather cringe a little at noticing a shift in the Command member's responsibilities - like we notice shifts everywhere else on the crew - than to just make certain faces extra rare. To me, issues with abusing authority and knowledge can/should be handled via staff oversight and common sense (a requirement for the whitelist?), and by checking applicant awareness of expectations on whitelist applications. The benefit of this change is very hard to see. It's a corporation that abuses its employees and their careers without a second thought. It exists in a game with space bears, vampires and people who are encouraged to violently revolt when their pay is docked by half for one workday. Heavy roleplay can be achieved without heavy realism, and I'd rather see both encouraged in ways that don't take away choice.
  13. I don't think she'll even be able to qwag. God help us.
  14. I agree that it's not a deal-breaking issue, but it is one that has bothered me a little over time, and is one of the only new things I have to add for feedback after posting on the last two versions of this application. I asked my questions about it to learn more about Hunter's OOC expectations as a player, not to call him out as 'possibly shit.' He answered those, so now the answers can speak for themselves. With that i mind, I think I'm neutral on this fifth application in the end. I'm being more critical than I usually get, after the fallout/complaint from the strip and the many reapplications, and should probably step back from the process here.
  15. Gooood question. I talked to Mofo a bit about this as I was spitballing ideas, because I wasn't sure how an NKA supporter would be able to: 1) Leave the fight when it's so desperate, with the NKA on the verge of defeat 2) Leave the planet when airspace and low orbit is likely dominated by other factions, and 3) Get anywhere else with the PRA exerting the lion's share of political power outside Adhomai And we didn't come up with a concrete method to do all three. Right now I'm assuming over the 7-8 years this new war's been going on, that it's divided families and that some are living in different factions. I feel like the only reasonable way to get Hadassah offworld would be to leverage someone with the ability to 'fake it' for her in the PRA long enough to get her on a shuttle. A sympathetic family member (and NT employee or liaison?) might be able to help her leave and get into contact with the company, at least. The specifics on how she gets out of NKA territory and off the planet are still a bit fuzzy for me aside from that there are likely forged papers and bribes involved, but it might make a good forum story sometime. I don't think NT would care so much whose side she's on, so long as she's a cheap worker, doesn't care where they place her, and will do her assigned job adequately. It's been mentioned that ALA/NKA-sympathetic characters don't have a lot of protection from the PRA authorities partnered with NanoTrasen, so I imagine it boils down to a kind of 'don't ask, don't tell' informal policy. Anyone up there who wouldn't want to be deported to a PRA labor camp for any reason wants to keep a low profile, including her. Her records are likely to have significant gaps, which she will sort of gloss over with the people hiring her. As for her personally, this is totally a last-resort. She loves her country and wants to be either teaching its youth or fighting to defend it, but is useless thanks to her injuries and needs to work for the people in her family who can't. Learning to come to grips with that, in a place she is likely to strongly dislike, surrounded by aliens and Tajara she sees as enemies, is the sort of character I wanted to start with. Thanks for asking questions and not giving a blind +1/-1!
  16. I wasn't pointing it out because there was or wasn't a rule against it. I was pointing it out because to me it indicates a lack of interest in helping to build on and make a round better, which is a thing I think a Head should ideally want to do. Which part are you disagreeing with? And Hunter, any insight for the rest of my questions above? Regardless of whether other people agree or not, they'll inform my opinion of this application.
  17. BYOND Key: Synnono Character Names: Zahra Karimi - Lab Assistant chasing a doctorate, hopeless space liberal, purple poncho enthusiast. Stefanie Matis - Careworn Internal Affairs Agent staring middle-age in the mouth. Brianna Collins - Nurse Practitioner and blatant medbay lesbian. I don't even think she's sorry. Tabitha Cousley - Archaeologist, Book-Lover, and Seeker of a Certain Unfortunate Truth. Faith - Silent, watchful IPC janitor. Wears the cake hat when no-one is looking. Species you are applying to play: Tajara What color do you plan on making your first alien character (Dionaea & IPCs exempt): Some kind of brown. I can see the RGB values for the ethnicity on the lore page. I do not know what Kochiba is yet, but it sounds nice. Have you read our lore section's page on this species?: Yas. Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph format. One paragraph minimum per question Why do you wish to play this specific race: Lately, I feel like the Tajara have some of the best climate for backstory conflict in a character. The three-way war has picked up a bit, and an oppressive atmosphere in NanoTrasen workplaces for non-PRA citizens is a dynamic I want to explore with one of my own. While the concept in my head doesn't need the species to work, current events seem to make it more likely that it'll be relevant on board with other crew - particularly other Tajara, who I don't seem to get the chance to play with much. Also, Mofo has done what I've craved for someone to do since I learned the wiki existed, and clarified the correct forms for the word "Tajara" on the species lore page: One Tajara = Tajara More Tajara = Tajara As an adjective = Tajaran And for this, I owe a debt that can only be paid in catbeasts. The nightmare is over. Identify what makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a Human: Tajara are different from humans in a few obvious biological and behavioral ways. They have a humanoid feline appearance with associated features, a tendency to roll their R's when speaking words in Tau Ceti Basic, a predisposition not to use the first-person unless in trusted company or for rhetorical emphasis, a unique sleep cycle, and a coat that leaves them uncomfortable in warmer climates. They have their own pantheon of gods, which are worshiped by different sects within that religion. Tajara have only been known to humanity for a few decades, and have hastily modernized during that time both technologically and culturally. Thanks to meddling from offworld and two planet-wide revolutions, the Tajara are maybe the most societally-agitated species NanoTrasen employs, and individuals can be highly distrustful or secretive for fear of retaliation from their government or their fellows. Tajaran education is far behind human standards, which NanoTrasen uses to exploit a cheap workforce where they can. Some are ignorant of this exploitation, others might be resentful, but without better options it seems to be the Tajaran lot to put up with it. Character Name: Hadassah Al-Hazmi Please provide a short backstory for this character, approximately 2 paragraphs Hadassah is a Hharar who has lived through the ongoing war in Barj'ar, on the northern edge of NKA territory. As one of the kingdom's increasingly-rare educators, she has spent the last several years teaching the physical sciences to shrinking classes of students. She, along with her family, are enthusiastic believers in Vahzirthaamro Azunja's promise of an enlightened monarchy, which will rule benevolently and with the help of the people at the end of the conflict. This ideal, along with a disgust for perceived PRA war crimes and other atrocities, has allowed her to suffer through living in the Kingdom's terrible conditions with a measure of dignity and hope. However, when the Republic staged what was meant to be a final offensive against the Kingdom in November of 2458, she was unable to stand idle and let the enemy march into Barj'ar. Answering her sovereign's call, she left to support the defense of her city, alongside other civilians previously deemed unfit to fight, and volunteers from the Alam'ardii called for by the King himself. Though the NKA survived this offensive, the battle took its toll on Hadassah in more ways than one. Injuries from shrapnel have left her unable to walk, and the university she once taught at has closed indefinitely, for a lack of staff and students. Without a means to support her family, and unable to continue fighting, she is now forced to look for work in unlikely places. By utilizing a distant family contact in Republic territory, she's arranged for the necessary paperwork and logistics to be quietly moved offworld, where she'll get a chance to work for NanoTrasen as a chemical technician, send money home to family, and observe the fate of her homeworld from afar. It is by no means the life she wants for herself, but without a better choice, she will take the opportunities she has, provide for the ones who need her, and bide her time until she can find a way to make a difference again. What do you like about this character? I like Hadassah because she is a woman whose pride and beliefs are at odds with her humbling situation. NanoTrasen and its close ties with the PRA makes a dangerous setting for a monarchist, and she'll have to temper her opinions, obfuscate her history, and bite her tongue just to ensure her safety and her family's financial security. I also like that she has no freedom of movement, and will need help to get things done around her workplace. Having to rely on people she might consider enemies in order to function in her job is a reality I'd enjoy her to have as she starts to develop. How would you rate your role-playing ability? Socks out of ten. Here's a visual aid: (I still hate this question.) Notes: Thank you for reading this, and I appreciate any constructive feedback or well-intended suggestions. I'm still new to the species in terms of writing for it, so if I've missed a detail or there's a technicality I can fiddle with someplace, please point it out to me!
  18. I take it back. Dragonspare and Moondancer brought up something that has bugged me a bit on the OOC side of things. You are always trying to vote to end the round at the earliest opportunity. When I last asked you about this, you'd said that it's basically because you're bored. While no-one's obligated to be thrilled by every round, this is a pattern of behavior so consistent that people are associating it with you as a player. Instead of just leaving my opinion on a bored person trying to force everyone else to stop playing at 'it builds on nothing is and not fun for others,' I'd like to ask you why you get bored and do it. Do you not feel invested in most rounds? What sort of role are you taking in the stories? What do you expect of the people around you, in regards to your own enjoyment? How are you adding to their experience? Will any of that change when you're a Research Director or Head of Security? If so, why?
  19. As someone who is still not clear on why this was implemented, I have to agree. Artificially restricting characters to the one single-slot role when they're capable of working anywhere along the spectrum of their original department (while simultaneously prohibiting them from visiting) is an effective multi-job ban for nothing other than a snip of realism. Is it a little cringeworthy that we have department and rank-hopping characters? Maybe, but we also have a limited number of slots and changing crew needs for a decent round. What are we gaining by enforcing this in such a way? Why reduce choice this much? There was a secondary reason given regarding restricted knowledge of the nuke, but I feel like that's even less of a good reason to enforce this rule. The nuke doesn't factor into most rounds, and the janitor who isn't bound by the restriction of the whitelist is just going to blab about it sometimes because they don't know any better anyway. We'd gently remind that janitor that to do so is against our rules (even though it isn't printed in them yet, and the average new player is going to have a hard time knowing about it). I like to think that we could have just done the same with our Captain characters who are occasionally working in other roles, or visiting.
  20. Hi there! I have next to zero experience with you, Jane or Craig, so my feedback is pretty much limited to what you've written down. Feedback to follow, mostly in order: Fair enough! The group's enjoyment is important here, I think. Heads tend to get scrutinized more than other characters as a result of how they interact with other people. With that in mind, it's a good idea not to be immersed to the point where you're taking things like insults or strong criticism personally, since you're going to get a lot of both, IC. I like the idea of a Head taking a proactive role in keeping players invested in a round - can you elaborate on how you think you'd personally go about that, in charge of Security? They're a busy bunch. Backstories are a bit less important to me in Head apps than they are in species apps, but I'm gonna give opinions while I'm here. Young Jane sounds extremely disadvantaged as a child. How did she manage to achieve a successful education while being exploited AND crippled? Having a backstory that contains some tragedy is A-OK, but it's nice to try and keep what's happened both believable and in service to how the character is roleplayed in the present. Reading the rest of this, I'm having a hard time reconciling the humane and acceptive Jane you write about later with this child, considering what she went through. I'm not actually sure what this sentence means. When you say she 'decided to the law' is she going into legal work, police work, or something else? Keep in mind that there's a difference between a Law degree and a Law Enforcement degree. The two career paths interact, but most graduates of Law enter work in the court system, rather than police or security work. NanoTrasen also effectively owns Tau Ceti, and as such already has a selection of the best candidates for jobs. What would have made them offer Jane a special deal, instead of just hiring someone else? How do you suppose she gained her liberal and humane qualities in the first place? She appears to have grown up with a very tragic and very oppressive set of circumstances, prior to leaving for Tau Ceti. Keep in mind that ultimately, if a character is found unsuitable or not a best fit, you can always invent one for the purposes of the application.
  21. Please stop posting these without significant changes and/or time. The last one was denied for a reason, and feedback on both prior apps wasn't addressed. Edit: I see that it wasn't denied, but actually taken down by your request (again.) I don't think that an app should vanish when it receives criticism. For people who review this third version, also look at this thread and this thread and this thread too to see what has already been said by others. I don't think I'll be giving a yes or no opinion here.
  22. Chief Mix, Chief Mix, Chief Mix! Seriously though, Pratepresidenten is capable, respectful and aware. While I'm still getting to know them as a player, they have never given me any reason to doubt any of the things they've written in their application. Medical feels understaffed quite a lot of the time recently, and having a sane and knowledgeable player be in charge of medbay would be great. I also like that while the player's applications have been fast, they intend to roleplay a path to promotion. This is the question I seem to ask everyone to clarify for me - do you think there's anything more to this? What are you responsible for in a round as a player? I like to think that it's more than just your IC department.
  23. Last minute feedback here! Sharp has had plenty of chances to prove their level-headedness and skillful conflict mediation as Raymond Hawkins, and they've always done a fine job with both on a character level. You can't pull that off without knowing a little about what you're doing as a player, and they are someone I'd happily trust to be fair, thorough and impartial when it comes to maintaining the rule of law here. So, yes. I'd very much enjoy to see them go through the trial.
  24. I'm not necessarily proud of that. But, it was one of those train wrecks you just wanted to watch. :'D
  25. The earlier version of this application already had feedback from Chaznoodles and Whiterabit, in which they both expressed concerns that I think are still valid. People who help enable others' roleplay, who exhibit good sportsmanship as a player, and who are receptive to criticism instead of combative, are all things that I think about when endorsing an application. As long as someone can keep a level head and help people enjoy themselves, they'll probably do fine. Good IC knowledge is more of a secondary thing for me - all stuff can be learned, and mistakes IC will happen no matter what. When someone argues OOC to the point of a ban around those mistakes, and then launches a complaint at staff based on the decisions they made as a response to that arguing, it seems to be an indicator of what we can expect in the future. So, for Hunter - do you still feel you were treated unfairly by staff on the day you had your whitelist revoked? If so, the next time an incident like that happens (assume that it will), what should we expect of you? If not, what has changed your mind and why? As for the application itself, I still think you should look at the thing I asked about in your second application - especially now: I'd like you to reconsider your response to this question, as I still don't think it's quite on target. Your answer addresses what a character in a Command position should theoretically be doing IC, but ignores what I would think of as the OOC purpose of the roles.
