I agree, but I think that round end voting should still be possible otherwise you'll get other issues.

Nice changes Senpai. But there is the issue of estimating time in processing. No one gets a timer out and times it. Also, as much as I'm in favor of it being more possible to lawyer your way through sec dealings, I don't think that a prisoner who deliberately wastes sec's time in processing should have the time count against their sentence. I suppose this could be resolved by adding a charge, or clarifying the legal applicability of an existing charge, for wasting time in processing. However, it should be noted that simply remaining silent/not confessing should never be an acceptable example of "wasting sec's time"

Minion memes are my fave.

This seems like metagruding to me to be honest. All your characters come down hard on me for no reason, starting with the time when you attempted to murder me as a non antag because I was hulked in my own lab, and wanted to scan myself in the DNA modifier before getting rid of it. What do I do that is so problematic? Edit: Also I don't want to be RD, I don't think Richter is qualified for that.

Giving myself powers is the ONLY way to effectively find out what blocks are what gene mods, and, despite admitted transgressions in the past, I always remove any dangerous gene mods now before I leave the lab. This is of course thrown out the window when I'm an antag. I definitely do not run around the station doing security's job hunting for antags, but if security fails then I start thinking self defense, and I use my powers to be an effective medical first responder (more of a body-bagger, really, since I'm not prepared to treat people in the field as a geneticist.) Hulks are almost immune to pain, mechanically. Why shouldn't I RP as such? Lore follows mechanics, or so I've been told. I've never been given a definitive lore explanation for hulks, or how to behave as one, but I imagine it would feel uncomfortable, so I become a little more irritable, and otherwise I am an intelligent being (a bit diminished by said irritability) in the biological equivalent of a mech suit, so naturally I get braver if combat comes to me, but I don't go and hunt down antags like a vigilante. What you're saying may have been true about me in the past, more or less, I think that since Killerhurtz had a talk with me about it I really have changed the way I handle genetics, for the better, and I don't think this should be what holds me back from the whitelist.

[Denied] Unban request (Two in one)
MagnificentMelkior replied to MetaphysicalPersona's topic in Unban Requests Archive
I've never seen her display medical knowledge of any significant caliber, but what I can speak to is her knowledge of genetics. She worked for my character Martin Richter as a lab assistant in genetics for like 5 shifts (not all in a row) and I went through a lot of effort to explain to her how to irradiate the blocks to a level where powers manifest, and I got her to the point where she could autonomously irradiate blocks and print them out. Her character as a result should know how to do just that: print out blocks that will manifest powers if the gene is right. That's the extent of her genetics knowledge that I've seen her display, and despite her character's bragging, she still behaves like a lab assistant who is just smart enough to operate the machinery. She has a poor understanding of the science behind genetics work, and as Dr. Isiah Fraser found out, doesn't know how to safely handle genetics at all. She's trying monkey see monkey do and doing a good job at it, but nothing more. As for combat and weapons training, shooting a gun is not hard to do, same with punching, and I don't think she's exceptionally robust at either, having fought her hand to hand before (no offense Meta!). -
BYOND key:Magnificent Melkior Character names:Martin Richter (Biologist), Holden Wright (Detectve). How long have you been playing on Aurora?:About 3 months. Why do you wish to be on the whitelist?:So that Martin Richter can be CMO, and so that I can play as heads of staff on other (new) characters after I git gud at it. Why did you come to Aurora?:It was listed in the byond server list and it said high roleplay. I stayed because I've had some really good games here and have become entangled with the community. Have you read the BS12 wiki on the head roles you plan on playing?:Yes. Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph each. Give a definition of what you think roleplay is, and should be about:Roleplay is immersion into the role of a character. Qualities that make someone a good actor make them a good roleplayer as well, and I think that role playing should be about creating an enjoyable scenario by being a good actor. Fun is, in my opinion, a byproduct of good roleplay, and is the goal of those who choose to roleplay, but fun is too subjective to be a well defined target, and so I say that roleplay itself is what roleplay should be about, or phrased another way, being a good actor. What do you think the OOC purpose of a Head of Staff is, ingame?:Largely the purposes that it serves ICly, except fewer. To allow for a social hierarchy, which allows for the resolution of conflicts in an official way, removing the need for two engineers to duke it out over a pair of insulated gloves. Also, because ICly heads of staff would exist in this world, so OOCly we expect them. I hope that was not too circular. What do you think the OOC responsibilities of Whitelisted players are to other players, and how would you strive to uphold them?:Off the clock, I personally don't believe there is any White-listee's burden, except perhaps to be helpful to people who ask how to get a white list in ooc. On the clock, however, someone acting as a role that requires a whitelist (including characters who are regarded well enough to be assigned as heads of staff but who happen to be playing the round as a different role) ought to demonstrate a good example to your peers so that they can get a concept in their heads for proper head of staff/taj/etc behavior. Please pick one of your characters for this section, and provide well articulated responses to the following questions. Character name:Martin Richter Character age:34 Please provide a short biography of this character (approx 2 paragraphs): Martin Richter grew up on Earth, raised by two good parents. He went to college originally planning to become a doctor but changed his focus to gene therapy somewhere along the way. He's got a positive and friendly outlook on life in the immediate sense, but has quite a bit of concern and paranoia about the astro-politics 2457. On one hand he just finds genetics fascinating, but on the other he is happy to believe that his research, which pushes the human(oid) form to new levels, takes away the teeth of the argument that synthetics will ultimately advance beyond us. He firmly believes that if we play our cards right, humanity can reign eternal in our realm. Martin's time on the Aurora has changed him, somewhat. He has seen a lot of absurd crises situations, and been forced to respond to them, falling back on his medical training. In his opinion, he has handled these situations well, and feels that he would be an asset to NT if they gave him command of the medical bay he's seen so much blood in. What do you like about this character?:He's talented and strong willed, so I can do a lot with him. He also has connections with a lot of the crew, both friendly, rivalrous, and in at least one case both, that provide me with a lot of entertaining RP. What do you dislike about this character?:He's kindof a dupe. While he's about as trust/suspicious of strangers as anybody else, he really lets his guard down with people that he considers friends. This causes him to let others get away with things that he probably shouldn't. He's also kindof a softie. When I'm an antag sometimes I want to and am able to bust into the CMO or RD's office, take their ID, and do evil stuff, but unless said head has wronged him, Richter just can't do it, even as a syndi-op. What do you think makes this character fit to be a head of staff?: He is competent in medical professions, and specializes in genetics which is seldom understood by medbay and this knowledge has resulted in many saved lives. He knows how to take command, and he has a proven record for success in a crisis. Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions. How would you rate your own roleplaying?: Pretty good. Extra notes: EDIT: today, 12/15, I was promoted to interim CMO on a long and busy shift and got a feel for the job. I'll let other people assess how I did.

Surgery without anasthesia should actually hurt
MagnificentMelkior replied to Lady_of_Ravens's topic in Archive
I don't know about the heart stopping thing, that seems a little unlikely and ss13 tends to err on the side of high (absurdly so) constitutions, but treating it like ghetto surgery is a solid idea, mostly because I can see squirming or freaking out causing you to slip up. Instead of anesthesia, there should be an easier and more brutal method for when you don't care about the health or sanity of the patient: strapping them down so hard they can't move, which could be assumed to already be taking place with the surgery tables. -
Martin Richter would be a Nord Alteration mage and alchemist who Hulks himself up with ironflesh and... tries punching people to death? Doesn't sound very viable lol.

I love it! Now I have a race of xeno I would want to play as! Could you explain a bit more about the nature of combat augments? Basically could you be a super-skrell nukeOp and wreck humans in CQC without it being considered unrealistic? Also, how strong do humans believe Skrell military to be? Do we fear them as a race that could wipe us out if they chose?

You are giving people with access to democratic processes far too much credit. I am sure that this system will introduce new problems and I don't think its worth trading any problems we might have now for these fresh new ones. Reddit karma/goodboypoints or wahtever they are called are supposed to be given based on "was the post on topic and well made" but of course people just use it to attack things they don't like and upvote things they do like. Here's a potential scenario that I feel is more realistic than your nuke op scenario A. 30 people are on. 6 votes for nukeop, 5 votes extended, 5 secret (14 nonvoters). Nuke round. Some people hate nuke rounds, but don't quit when they lose the vote. Nuke Ops go loud and kill people in a way that people who like Nukeop rounds enjoy, but people who voted extended probably don't. 5 people get murdered with carbines or hull breaches. Round ends. 5 salty dead people downvote the antags, plus the 5 extended voters, plus some fraction of the nonvoting population who nontheless don't really like nuke rounds probably exactly because of nuke ops who go loud and kill people. If 5 or 6 of those people downvote, which is entirely possible, the nuke ops lose their goodboypoints. Counter-counter arguements: If your vote requires more than a majority to subtract goodboypoints, good luck ever getting enough voters to tip the scale. (Abstainees are a significant portion of the server, and you can't fix that.) If would only happen in extremely fragrant cases of shittiness, in which case player complaints or adminhelp handle it fine, and it is not worth it to implement this system just for those corner cases. If you would use a voting system that cuts out abstainees, you get skewed results and people who the majority were fine with WILL get smacked with badboypoints because salty players are much more likely to show up to vote than people who don't care.

I don't think there should be a dnd sized wizard spell list, since that only makes it harder to make choices for people who don't already know how to play a wizard, but I do like some of these spells a lot. I think the list, if actually implemented, could use some refining. One other thing: I like the healing spell, and I think healing magic should be available to a wizard, but I think that would be important to require the use of a staff, so that a wizard who is finally taken out by security cant just heal himself and keep going.

What is a "succession game"?
-
But why? Slime mobs demonstrate intelligence, and an ego. "I'm hungry" and "[charname]... friend..." So given that why would you lose your mind so completely?
-
I've been meaning to ask you how you do that. Can you add custom verbs to your IC tab or something?

The brig is actually pretty good with the communal brig in my opinion. Even one other prisoner there really makes it an enjoyable experience. Also, its not that hard to bust out of the brig if you are a savvy antag and - this is important - you are pleasant towards security. I find that if I'm nice to the arresting officers I get less supervision and am more likely to be able to hide a tool or weapon somewhere on my body because they are less likely to force me to change to orange. I think suggestions for things to add or change about the communal brig are the best place to go if you want to enhance the experience of prisoners. Most of the other suggestions have to come through the sec departments graces and they can already do that if they want to.

Emag showerheads to have them spit chlorine gas.

You can actually fix it by clicking on your labcoat with an empty hand (opening the real inventory) and closing it. But you should refrain from opening your backpack before you do this as sometimes that causes it to be unfixable without a relog.

"Character skills" vs. "Lawful combat" duality
MagnificentMelkior replied to Frances's topic in General
Yes. Another reason I forgot to mention in my previous post is that hard coding in any of these proposed "solutions" would inevitably cause collateral damage. -
Pretty sure you can't select Judaism as a religion, and its not like there are yarmulkes in game. Anyway, why wouldn't it mostly be whites and east asians? Look who have gone to space in our time: Mostly whites and east asians. I don't see why that would be different in the future. (although planets would be colonized by all manner of humans, I don't see blacks and indians being predominant forces on research stations tbh fam)

"Character skills" vs. "Lawful combat" duality
MagnificentMelkior replied to Frances's topic in General
I really don't the idea of combat skills influencing mechanics. Antags already have a hard time, how much worse do you think it will be when an antag doctor has to go against security that is enhanced with IC skill mechanics? Here's my take on it: only mechanically skilled people should play characters who are mechanically skilled. If you want to have a badass character you have to earn it through system mastery. Yes, combat roles like operative and sec should get better equipment to robust people with (and they do! Seriously security is a force to be reckoned with and that's not even counting ERT), but to make them superior really just cheapens the achievement of people who pull off badass characters through being admirably skillful. It's literally the same as someone playing a scientist who is supposed to be a genius but they can't pull it off through RP and job mastery wanting people to be forced to ICly accept them as the genius the player envisioned them as. If you can't cut it, don't play it. The problem, where it exists, of people being immersion breakingly robust is one that is best handled by administration, rather than through coding. -
Yes, I think the changelings could use some lore. Star Trek had changelings and that situation was really cool but I don't want to spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen DS9. If all people knew were rumors of body snatching alien spies (with in the loop people knowing that its not just rumors) with unknown intent, I think it would 1 bring more people into the changeling rounds because the presence of changelings on board would be more likely to be discovered (as opposed to everyone anti-metaing away from naming the changeling) and 2 allow for greater variety of RP.
