are you the guy who was mad when I knew how to do surgery? Its not unrealistic given his age. Besides, what CMO wouldn't know how to do basic treatments and surgery? You are aware that he is a Biologist, and that they are given a surgery table for a reason, yes? Anyway, with the GEOM thing, you can't just name yourself something in genetics. I had that name because I injected the actual god emporer of mankind's UI/UE into myself (found on the derelict station.). I had a syringe in my pocket to turn myself back too. I don't see the issue with that, as it was contained to my lab. When did that ever happen? And are you saying I get salty ooc for transgressions IC? What are you saying there, and give an example.

Three times in the past week or so that I have done... what exactly? Please explicate. Anyway, the hulk boxing match was not to entertain crew (although that was considered a perk), it was to demonstrate to the other geneticist in a safe manner the exact qualities of the hulk gene, which is valuable data. Edit: Also, if I have issues solely related to genetics, that should not prevent me from becoming a CMO, as my access to genetics would be diminished. And if I'm really that bad of a geneticist then that should be addressed as in issue somewhere other than my whitelist application. Richter is an exemplary doctor and this has been demonstrated in game many times over.

BYOND key: Magnificent Melkior Character names: Martin Richter, Holden Wright, Cade Powers (rarely, as a learning experience) How long have you been playing on Aurora?: Since september. Why do you wish to be on the whitelist?:So that I can make a HoP character, and so that I can make medbay great again. Why did you come to Aurora?:For the RP and then ss13isms that brought me to the game as a whole (murder and traitor mysteries, meaningful pvp, sci fi memes.) Have you read the BS12 wiki on the head roles you plan on playing?: Yes. Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph each. Give a definition of what you think roleplay is, and should be about:Roleplay is immersion into the role of a character. Qualities that make someone a good actor make them a good roleplayer as well, and I think that role playing should be about creating an enjoyable scenario by being a good actor. Fun is, in my opinion, a byproduct of good roleplay, and is the goal of those who choose to roleplay, but fun is too subjective to be a well defined target, and so I say that roleplay itself is what roleplay should be about, or phrased another way, being a good actor. What do you think the OOC purpose of a Head of Staff is, ingame?:Largely the purposes that it serves ICly. To allow for a social hierarchy, which allows for the resolution of conflicts in an official way, removing the need for two engineers to duke it out over a pair of insulated gloves. Also, because ICly heads of staff would exist in this world, so OOCly we expect them. I hope that was not too circular. Additionally they exist to serve as an example of proper play in their department. The CMO should practice good medicine, the HoP should file proper paperwork. What do you think the OOC responsibilities of Whitelisted players are to other players, and how would you strive to uphold them?: To correct bad behavior in their underlings, to be helpful when asked for help, and to tutor willing pupils when able. Please pick one of your characters for this section, and provide well articulated responses to the following questions. Character name: Martin Richter Character age: 34 Please provide a short biography of this character (approx 2 paragraphs):Martin Richter grew up on Earth, raised by two good parents, a doctor and a housewife. He went to school planning on being a Plastic Surgeon, for the money. Somewhere in college though he became fascinated with gene therapy, and part way through medical school he formally changed his goals. He received an MD and a Ph.D. in Comparative genetics, his thesis was comparing the genes of intelligent skrell with intelligent humans. Since working on the NSS Aurora, Richter has been forced to deal with medical emergencies surprisingly often. On two occasions he was able to come up with a treatment plan that no one else could have done, using his genetic research to save a patient's livelihood, and he's done more than his fair share of surgery. He believes that he could run the Medbay better than some CMOs he's served under, and is eager for promotion. What do you like about this character?: He's got a unique perspective on things. Unlike most doctors, he juggles the twin pursuits of research and treatment. Occasionally both science and medbay need him, and he has to make a decision. Usually medbay wins, but occasionally he's been too entrenched in science to leave (On an away team or something). Also, he's good at his job, which lets me be robust and save lots of people's lives when shit hits the fan in medbay. I also like how confrontational he can be, as it creates RP. An example is when security tries to enforce a law that exists only in their minds, and its not code red, he puts up a strong argument. What do you dislike about this character?: He's kindof a jerk. By that I mean he's very open to confrontation and doesn't take shit from anyone unless he has to. He tells other people how to do their jobs if they are impeding his progress (such as a slow chemist). I also regret how far I took his confrontational nature in the past. While I was legally correct to, say, tell CMOs not to worry about my research, it made some enemies that ended up costing more than it gained. What do you think makes this character fit to be a head of staff?: He has a proven record of medical excellence, and he has demonstrated an ability to take charge and lead people, such as when he was made interim CMO, and other times where he unofficially took control of medbay and organized the doctors to deal with serious death and injury outbreaks (though the worst of these are noncanon rounds). Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions. How would you rate your own roleplaying?: 8/10. Extra notes: In my previous application, I was shot down for perceived vigilantism. I eased up on the gene modding, and went many rounds where I didn't even touch the DNA modifier except to make protohumans. And in the rounds where I did use gene mods, I never used remote viewing to hunt valids, never popped a hulk gene in response to conflict, etc. There was one instance where my genetics came into play in combat, and it was when I obtained permission to go to the holodeck and box another hulk from the RD. The other geneticist was really excited to try it, and as far as we knew everything was fine. Then we heard trouble on the bridge, and went to check it out because I brought my medical supplies and with our powers we felt we could stay safe and see what it was. Suddenly a horde of spooky ghosts and constructs came out of the walls and killed the other geneticist immediately, so I ran as fast as i could, but they chased me. During the chase I managed to robust them with telekinesis. Also I am aware there is an incident report against me, but I have no idea when DOs will contact me about that, and I am pretty confident that I will be cleared of wrongdoing in this instance (there is a counter IR that was filed on the reporter, not by me, and its a whole thing that I don't want to go into here). I was told by garnasus a month or more ago to apply again in two weeks, and he said I should be accepted if I didn't do anything during that time. Well, I've got for a much longer period than two weeks. During those two weeks I had done nothing at all, and recieved not even a note. And in the extra time, I've had a couple of scrapes with the law, but nothing major. I think I'm ready to be a head of staff.

As it stands (objectively), the second you make a monkey a protohuman it becomes completely stoic, rigid, and emotionless. I want to at least make it so people can RP the "HOLY SHIT I AM THE SENTIENCE" before being cut in half and thrown down disposals. That's not true. Through much experience I have determined that protohumans as they currently are most likely possess very basic neurological reflexes, lizard brain stuff. They scream when you do really mean things to them like give them seizures or certain other things. They are problably comatose, literally. IRL people in comas can still track motion with their heads and will do so when they see new things, despite being totally brain dead aside from the stem.
-
If this is implemented I think it should only be possible on certain protohumans, to avoid genetics turning into a spawning ground for the dead. Maybe protos that get telekinesis are permanently flagged as possible candidates? Reason being that it says "you feel smarter" when that happens, so It has a foundation for lore writing to stand on.
-
That would be cool if it didnt necessitate a retcon of protohuman SOP. As is, I'm allowed to blast them with radiation without consent, vivisect them, give them to other people with minimal regard for their safety ("hey, we wanna test our lawgiver on a protohuman!"), turn them back into monkeys, etc. And I want to keep that ability. But if occasionally they become sentient, that would be interesting.

Wheras: Cryotubes are an ICly discussed and accepted fact, and everyone's character can be expected to think of them as real objects. Why would there be a rule against using them to escape? The prisoner cryotubes should be put in a secure location to prevent that from happening by whatever prison architect put in plans for them. If you wait inside the tube for someone to walk by and pop out and robust them, well, good job! That's how I see it anyway.

New job for both Current and New Map: Salvage Crew
MagnificentMelkior replied to FluffyBirb's topic in Archive
a trans z-level ship sounds great. I'm worried though that this infringes on a certain subsection of telescience, xenoarcheology, and mining. Do you have any ideas on how to bring them into this, or make this distinct from them? If nothing mechanically changes, a new job title for miner "Salvager" with different RP duties would be cool. -

What sort of issues do you detect?

That was me, sorry, I didn't even realize that happened. Thought I was quoting it and the format got messed up. Anyway, people's votes being swayed by the running tally is a good thing. When someone switches their vote it indicates that the new thing is what they want their vote to be counted towards (for strategic reasons, yes.) Robbing them of that ability means their vote doesn't go to the most preferable option (and again, the strategic option is in fact the most preferable option, because you want another round type NOT to happen more than you want your favorite round type to know you stood up for it in vain). This would, at vote end, increase dissatisfaction in everyone who lost because it is more likely that an option that a larger group wanted to avoid won. Do you disagree with that? If so, you have to demonstrate why its bad that people's votes are swayed by votes of others.

As Dreamix said, Lore can be changed. If lore and the realities of the game (mechanics, or species job restrictions) it should be changed otherwise what's the point of having an obviously inconsistent with reality lore? What are people supposed to base their IC knowledge and resultant behaviors on if not lore? And what's wrong with restricting certain things in order to have a verisimilitudinous world? Why can't Taj or Unathi be captains? Because lore. Getting rid of such restrictions would require a less racist and less interesting lore.

Jim Calhoun - Feedback, Sustains, Improves
MagnificentMelkior replied to Redfield5's topic in Character Stories
I've interacted with calhoun significantly more over the last day or two, and I really enjoyed it. He's very good at his job, and fun to try to circumvent as an antag. -
1; The same argument can be made for literally any race, including humans if the company didn't happen to be humanrun. 2; The same argument can be made for literally every role. If Vaurca are banned from the security role for the reasons posited, the natural conclusion is that they should be banned from every role except some civilian roles. 1; You're right that it could be made for unathi, and maybe taj, because they both have anatomical weapons, but taj claws aren't that threatening, and unathi are less scary and more well known than vaurca. Skrell are unthreatening in appearance and well known at this point. 2; A vaurca scientist, engineer, or civilian would not be an issue because those roles don't require out-group interaction to a significant degree, and most importantly, doesn't put people into situations where they are likely to be very afraid. A mandible bearing bug with a stun baton however would be a scary thing . With vaurca sec officers you are forcing people to be in violent or at least hostile situations, alone and isolated, with a nightmarish creature. People are going be traumatized by that. And that brings us to medical. I can see people being scared to go under the knife with a vaurca. But at least in these situations they are supposed to help you and heal you. In any case nursing intern and chemist would be fine (psychologist I would be very dubious of: how is a totally alien creature going to do psychology for humans after less than a year of knowledge between the species?). I'd say medical doctor but not surgeon, but, they are really the same job with different focus so they have to be considered as one.

how do you manage to blood boil 5 people? Dont you have to drag them onto a rune and activate it?
-
[a bunch of self contradictory stuff] When mystical religious stuff happens provably in front of you, and another religious figure claims he can fix it, why would you not give them the benefit of the doubt?
-
Vaurca sec officers would really make a lot of people uncomfortable and I don't know if that's been addressed. Sec are, after all, at least partially a police force. For that reason I am in favor of banning them from security.

Unban appeal 'Round Two'
MagnificentMelkior replied to MetaphysicalPersona's topic in Unban Requests Archive
I recommend you don't write records unless you really want to and just do the in lobby chargen stuff. -
Hey that's pretty cool. Here's my picks: Dr. Storch - who cares if he's arrogant, you need a smart guy, and Shane is a crippled prick. Sheena - athletic build and no disabilities? sounds good. Not planning on erping so aids doesn't matter. Barry - if it was a 1st worlder he killed I might be concerned. Billy - Only because Barry and I can watch him and keep him honest. Problem eliminated, solid crewman acquired. Mary Anne - experienced nurse is nice. Her sins do not warrant death, and what's the worst an alcoholic woman can do at sea? Wildcard slot. Fred is the survivalist choice but I don't think he's necessary. Lola might cause group problems, wants to die anyway. I'd pick Cindy, and everyone not mentioned is a horrible choice.

As far as I know there is no erotica in the library. I got a warning for "uploading erotica" when I posted wgw.

10 Seconds Notice - Gravity Generator Status
MagnificentMelkior replied to UnknownMurder's topic in Archive
I like it the way it is. I think that having to be aware that its about to come on and slam you when the power turns back on yourself or get slammed is a nice bit of mundanity for our characters to have to suffer through. -
This sounds reasonable except for your double asterix aside. Non-medical generally don't carry around any method of healing and I don't think that a valid self defense incident where lethal force was justified should carry any sort punishment. It ought to be your responsibility to make sure medical is informed, but to actually save them yourself? I don't think so, Especially when they could just get up and take their vengeance after you stabilize them. If it were a medical personnel who self defended the other guy, then I do think they are obligated to help but I think it would be gross neglect of duty rather than manslaughter.
