BurgerBB Posted March 23, 2019 Posted March 23, 2019 Research is and has been genuinely the worst job mechanic of Aurorastation. Out of all the servers on the hub, Aurorastation research is unquestionably the worst. Current problems Research resets to 1 every round. Research is super tedious to perform and requires several menus to go through a sub par interface. Research as a Cyborg is worse. Interface is absolute shit, as mentioned above. Research consists of following a guide and performing the same actions over and over again. There is no optimization or variation someone can perform. Roboticist is absolutely shafted of content if there is 0 research. On other servers, a roboticist can do research themselves. How to fix (short term): All research starts at level 5 on round start (except for phoron, bluespace, and illegal). This will still make research shit, but significantly less shit. How to fix (long term): Research starts at level 5 on round start. Remove the feature where if you sync an item of level x research when you're at level x research, research is increased to x+1. Make it so that miners, xenobiologists, and other occupations can discover objects of high research level. Just going "wait until next big thing" or "wait until research overhaul that has taken 2 years to debate and make" is dumb. Research needs to be fixed now.
ferner Posted March 23, 2019 Posted March 23, 2019 I very much agree, it's a mechanic of tedium, repeating the same steps round after round, and as said by others, feels just gamey and non-collaborative. Not conducive for a good rp experience. Starting the levels at 5 would be a small relief certainly.
Chada1 Posted March 23, 2019 Posted March 23, 2019 (edited) I think a bandaid solution while we wait for the overhaul is a good idea, so I support this. Simply increasing the starting levels is a good temp solution, that'd make research less aggrivating for all parties, and can be justified in Lore, too, with the recent opening of the Upsilon. Doxxmedearly Posted March 23, 2019 Posted March 23, 2019 Seems like a similar QoL idea to when we moved the phoron canisters and shield locations for engineering (Which is great). Removes some of the tedium. Seems like a solid short-term solution with potential for implementing your long-term ideas. Honestly, this is exactly why science is the only department I haven't played extensively. I like it.
Guest Marlon Phoenix Posted March 23, 2019 Posted March 23, 2019 (edited) I made an overhaul consisting of research papers and a roundi randomized tech web that made research a mix and match puzzle game. The dev for it ghosted. Edited March 23, 2019 by Marlon Phoenix
Guest Marlon Phoenix Posted March 24, 2019 Posted March 24, 2019 We'd start at 5 so science can both play with toys for applied experiments. Or have research papers be what advance the research level. So research levels are risen by publishing papers on that field.
VTCobaltblood Posted March 24, 2019 Posted March 24, 2019 Burger writing a post on a job I actually can talk about, fantastic. 5 hours ago, BurgerBB said: Research consists of following a guide and performing the same actions over and over again. There is no optimization or variation someone can perform. False. In fact, the only interesting element of RnD is different methods of optimizing it - circuit kit, roboticist's stuff, etc. The guides we have right now are terribly outdated, and I'm currently following none of them. There can be also plenty of variation if you're a RD - derelict shuttle with phazon head, telecomms parts, etc... 5 hours ago, BurgerBB said: Research is and has been genuinely the worst job mechanic of Aurorastation. snicker All of this ignores a much more obvious, prevalent and important problem than the barely significant things you've described in attempt to make the job seem like "the worst evah". The entire concept of research levels is gamey and anti-RP. It pains me to say "levels" in IC, or to hear you say as an antag to "finish research in five minutes". Although your fix would be welcome, and I doubt it'd be difficult to add, it does nothing to address this problem. The NBT research I've seen being talked about does nothing to solve it either, but that's not for this thread.
MoondancerPony Posted March 24, 2019 Posted March 24, 2019 I will consider reviving Jackboot's proposal. The two suggestions proposed in the OP are absolutely untenable.

The first just removes a 13 minute roundstart. It doesn't mean that the levels are entirely maxed. Edited March 25, 2019 by VTCobaltblood
