Zundy Posted January 28, 2020 Posted January 28, 2020 As the title says. When examining a player character or """"""""mob""""""""" make it say "They" for example "They are wearing a gas mask." Some species like skrell are essentially androgynous thus should require more observation then just a quick glance to ascertain biological sex. It also allows for characters to go fora more androgynous look themselves as well as softly leading people to both read and write their flavor texts.
Screemers Posted January 28, 2020 Posted January 28, 2020 I'm against a systematic replacement to put "they" everywhere. It could be available to alien species like a Diona and Skrell as an option, but most of the people around are normally easy to tell. Also, because of game limitation, people often confuse other people sex and the description help a lot to get it right. I don't really want to pass all my time correcting people on it because the description is ambiguous.
Skull132 Posted January 28, 2020 Posted January 28, 2020 If a species is meant to be androgynous upon inspection, then the code can be altered to reflect this. This is already the case with Diona, and if the Skrell lore dev wishes, can be expanded to Skrell. In species with commonly clear sexual dimorphism, such as humans, Unathi, etcetera, gendered pronouns per mechanics would remain, as I do not see a need to expand this to all species if we can already alter it per individual species per necessity.
FreshRefreshments Posted January 28, 2020 Posted January 28, 2020 Itd make sense to me to apply it to Skrell. Maybe apply it to Unathi, but people get them wrong a lot already, which I think is more about just their sprite.
Zundy Posted January 28, 2020 Author Posted January 28, 2020 Yeah, unathi wise their sexual dimorphism is very obvious so maybe keep them as he/she.
YourDaddy117 Posted January 28, 2020 Posted January 28, 2020 I suggest just adding a third "They" gender option in the char setup. Bay's version of this just has "Plural" alongside male and female. It does just as you describe where characters who people want to be androgynous can be while anyone else can choose the normal male and female options. TBH I don't think it should be something forced on characters no matter what (unless it's due to their species as mentioned) because often times you can tell when someone who's male is male. Adding a separate option easily solves any issues by just letting people choose whether or not they want to be seen as "they" on examination.

I agree, but I also agree with species-specific implementation like the Skrell (who are androgynous by form).
Guest Marlon Phoenix Posted January 28, 2020 Posted January 28, 2020 Do you only want a gender neutral examine or have it as an option?
Myazaki Posted January 28, 2020 Posted January 28, 2020 (edited) Vaguely related PR up from me at the moment - Species that are neuter gender now show up as neuter always It adds a gender sanitzation function and species-specific gender lists and makes a few species always neuter gender. That could be easily adapted to give players or specific species a plural or neuter option in the future if someone cares to add that. Edited January 28, 2020 by Myazaki
