Alternating Round Modes

Alternating Rounds

Earlier today, a couple people went into an entire argument for nearly half an hour about how people calls the shuttle during rounds. So here's my two cents.

Alternating rounds. Server starts up, goes into extended. This is a server picked thing and nobody will be able to change it (except adminbus, of course). After one round of extended, the server then opens up to vote for a round (or two) of the playerbase's choice.

I always wanted to really get far with xenoarcheology but I never have been able to since the round is on another mode other than extended. This is also a heavy RP server, so why not?

I can predict players purposefully skipping the extended or voted for rounds, though.

No matter what the round is, I can always predict who will join and who will mill about as a ghost or sit in the lobby.

So what you're proposing is a cycle of extended -- voted -- extended -- voted -- extended ad infinitum?

In a way, yes. Though I was thinking maybe we can put a couple rounds in between the extended rounds.

Another proposal is to single out a day just for extended.

I think 1138 made a similar suggestion at some point. Not sure where that went, but I doubt one day of extended would be that unbearable for people into action. Give it a try, I say.

I don't want to be forced to play extended. I'd rather it just be voted for, as some of us don't have all day to play this game and would like to spend the time we have shooting bad guys and roleplaying that rather than roleplaying the newest line McDonald burgers being introduced to the station. Sorry I'm really against this idea.

Except "vote influencing" is explicitly against the rules. Not only that, but we ARE a heavy roleplay sever, how can we call ourselves that if most of the player base goes "Ugh, damnit, we actually have to do STUFF without having people with guns and bombs and stuff around? Ugggghhhhh" Im not saying antags are a BAD thing, but if its secretstended, no one gives a crap there are no antags, but if extended is voted outright, or forced outright every round or so, thats when people start to complain, when they know they're going to have their people who blow up the station, or make themselves a threat to the station taken away. Im going to beat the broke horse record to death again and say extended is only boring if its made boring. Im not saying all the weight is on the playerbase here, because we do have admins with infinite power, and infinite control over the IC corporation that owns the station we play on.

That's something you'll have to resolve by creating more fun individual events that involve players during rounds with antagonistic roles. Through this, it'll make players feel like they can do these things in extended too, which might change their minds about just how uneventful extended can be.

Except you can't do fun things like that during secret or antag rounds. The ice cream social or station evacuation drill you planned doesn't usually take precedence when armed syndie ops show up, or when faceless corpses start being found in the tunnels, or power sinks start blowing up in the bathrooms.

Right, Heavy Roleplay. Essentially means taking the role more seriously, immersing yourself in the character, making sure not to break character. It does not mean that rounds should be modified to be made boring. Yes some people enjoy chair roleplay, I used to as well. The issue is that not everyone does, the server took a direct move from chair rp and to making antagonists more open and enjoyable. We're here to enjoy ourselves and play a game, yes a game. Yes this is a roleplaying game, but a game nonetheless.

TL;DR: Heavy roleplay doesn't mean boring roleplay and people play games to enjoy themselves not do more work.

Yeah, I wasn't talking about saying "Lets all vote extended! Hint hint!"

I was talking about making Extended, when it happens, really interesting and cool. If Extended rounds are consistently the most fun, most interesting, most engaging rounds on the server then of course more people will vote for them.

Pretty much this.

If I wanted to simulate a realistic work environment for four hours, I would stop playing this game and go pick up a half-shift at work. Moreover, forcing a round type doesn't even remotely solve the "problem" of people calling the shuttle early - and I stuck quotes around it because it's not actually a problem. Three hours is more than enough for anything I could possibly think of, and if the players can pass the arbitrary 2/3 threshold before the three hour mark, then who are you to get miffed because they want to move on? If the players aren't engaged, they won't want to play - this isn't a failure of server mechanics, this is a failure of the chair RPer's mindset.

When I try to make extended rounds fun, it typically doesn't go over very well - it usually results in an event with poor attendance (due to SSD's, chair RPers refusing to move, etc,) or being thrown in the brig while the officers go SSD (because I did something non-antaggy, but also illegal). Unless the gun is in your face (or you're part of security) I can't really see how most rounds are different from your extended chair RP - if you're the kind of person who's making all sorts of preparations you wouldn't normally because of your OOC knowledge there's an antagonist about, you're doing something wrong. If you insist on being a chair RP hermit, just shut yourself in your department and do it, but don't force the rest of us to suffer through it because you don't get the 3-4 hours of quality time with your clique that you'd like. I can't even conceive of a situation in which someone requires that span of uninterrupted time.

If it didn't get voted in, that means a majority of people don't want to play that round type - so don't be a selfish git and try to force it on us, because all that'll do is disgruntle players, myself included.

If you want extended, vote extended.

If you want secret, vote secret.

Maybe people will share your desire for wanting a certain gamemode, maybe not.
