Character Complaint - Travis Davis

Recommended Posts

BYOND Key: Valkrae

Player Byond Key: XXTheFurryXx

Staff involved: SoapyCup

Reason for complaint:

Travis Davis is, in my opinion, to snowflakey of a character in it's current state. Not only is Travis Davis skilled in Telescience, he is also skilled in Atmospherics, fixing Hull breaches and Xenobiology. I don't see this as the sort of character we want on Aurora, as it is unbelievable. Especially at the characters age of 34.

I'd like for XXTheFurryXx to change the character up to fit believable standards.

Approximate Date/Time: 11/6/2015 - Around 9PM EST.

I'm honestly in agreement with you. I've seen Travis Davis do a tremendous amount of different things, teleporting people with Bluespace, Xenobiology, Atmos, Engineering, R&D and at-least once Robotics. And when confronted he just goes "HE HAS NO SOCIAL LIFE. IT'S ALRIGHT" or "I'VE SEEN OTHER PEOPLE DO WORSE". And I just don't see how this is excusable

If I remember correctly this was already brought up and addressed and he changed it many many months ago?

Except the "agreement" Staff came to with him, is still allowing him to do Science, and Atmos, and parts of engineering. Which is still...bad.

I have a 33 year old with a doctorate in xenobiology, a bachelors in chemistry, a minor in emergency medicine. She's an EMT, Chemist, Scientist, and Xenobiologist. Nobody's made any complaints about her qualifications.

These fields are more cohesive; they're all biology/medicine-related, and chemistry has some very strong tie-ins with biology. Atmos, engineering, biology and telescience have very little relation, in comparison.

Anyway, I'm also assuming your character acts more... dignified? People are generally more willing to accept characters with above-average intelligence/skills if they act their part, while Travis combines the qualities of being really unserious and overcompetent.

(I'm not saying skilled characters can't be eccentric, but they probably shouldn't be the caricature of a Brony.)

It's Lifeweb weekend, so I forgot to post this earlier on the other thread, but I think this to be more suited to this complaint. There, proof. Thursday, approximately 9PM. You can go dig up more context, but this snippet is what I posted in a Skype message to some people who was actually complaining about TheFurry.

Tbf, I'm going to regard what Delta said as null-information, as it doesn't really provide any substance towards the complaint, nor does he use it to present a point, relevant or otherwise. I'm all for catching people when they're being silly and claiming things didn't happen, but this isn't it.

If my memory serves, somewhere around January/February, whenever this issue was picked up by the admins of their own initiative, we reached an agreement that Travis is permitted to be an atmospheric technician within the capacity of an apprentice. Which, at the time, seemed to work: he was indeed following around actual atmostechs and RP-ing with them. The rest of the staff, or TheFurry, can bring me up to speed on if anything has changed since then, though, I am somewhat doubtful of this fact.

Three questions stem from this:

- Did Travis exceed the agreed-upon capacity of knowledge? (This is primarily to Valkrae/other observers.)

- TheFurry, for the sake of public information, what is the actual skillset Travis has and employs?

- Does the previously agreed-upon deal sound reasonable to everyone? If not, then why?

From what I can tell, He's not only fixing hull breaches, but actively having an expertise over Xenobiology, and Telescience. I have not properly spectated him in Atmospherics, but logic would assume it's the same as the previous two.

My issue here is this; These fields have nothing to do with each other. Telescience is math based, requiring advanced trigonometry, and mathematical reasoning. Xenobiology, on the other hand, is a biological science. Requiring knowledge of xeno-life and how it operates. Atmospherics, while I don't fully understand it, is nothing like fixing hull breaches and the like of which Travis has been doing.

I don't agree that this decision is reasonable, for the sheer fact that I don't see NanoTrasen hiring him for these jobs. I could understand is his character had knowledge in them as a hobby, but not to the point where NanoTrasen would pay him to come onto the station and perform those jobs.

Link to comment

You are splitting a hair with the telescience/xenobio thing. Namely, take note that most, if not all science-characters who've been on station for a long enough time have been around all branches of science. Granted, though, I have yet to see a scientist who also plays engineering with the same character.

Now, my question is, why is it unreasonable for a scientist to be an engineering apprentice, basically? Let's speak hypothetically for a moment, as I want to figure something out real quick. We have a scientist named Bob, he's like 40 or some shit, and is swapping from science to engineering, so he's doing the occasional off-shift as an engineering apprentice. This was basically the deal which was made so many months ago, as sounds reasonable to me.

Here's the part that's unreasonable to me. In the deal, it was said that Travis Davis could possess knowledge of Xenobiology, Telescience and BASIC atmos. Which I believe is kinda reasonable, but which I've seen Furry take to unreasonable lengths. What I mean by this is that I've seen Furry rebuild entire sections of the hull after a meteor impact, something that I with my fully trained and educated Atmos tech will not do. As that ISN'T atmos, it's engineering, that being said. I'd be fine with it IF Travis was just an Atmos tech. But IMO Xenobiology, Telescience, Atmos and engineering is just too diverse a skill-set for a single character.

The way it looks, he was given permission by SoundScopes to be a duo Science/Atmos Tech.

True, Jennalele had said "Do this and you're banned." But he reappealed asking what he needed to do to get his character to a level where being a duo job department should suffice, talking to Scopes about the issue.

After that, he complied and changed his character accordingly.

Soapy was going off an older note which was voided three days after after he seek out what he needed to do in order to play Travis in duo departments.

Now, many, many characters, mine included department jump. Can someone please tell me why this is an issue with Travis Davis?

Link to comment

Xenobiology/atmospherics/telescience have zero field or career relation at all. Especially since Travis only joins into xenobiology for the sake of acquiring bluespace crystals for telescience, and only seems to join in engineering when there are Tajarans in the department.

Don't know about you, but I got yelled at for pulling shit like this. I also believe I spoke with Skull once about department hopping, and that it's only okay if the department you're hopping to is just an assistant-level position. That is not the case here.

So first things first Idk why or how people get so misinformed. Or if they are simply lying. let’s just get that out of the way.

I've seen Furry rebuild entire sections of the hull

No you haven’t…oocly I barely know how to repair the hull. If travis was doing anything I was just helping someone else or completely lost.

I've seen Travis Davis do a tremendous amount of different things, “…”, Engineering, R&D and at-least once Robotics.

No you haven’t. unless your counting over 12 months ago when I was first learning the game and developing the character. I’ve never touched engineering rnd or robotics.

From what I can tell, He's not only fixing hull breaches, but actively having an expertise over Xenobiology

No he doesn’t. see comment one.

anyways moving on. Snip and snip

If my memory serves, somewhere around January/February, whenever this issue was picked up by the admins of their own initiative, we reached an agreement

• the infractions described in the complaint have already been dealt with by a staff member in-game, a player complaint will not change the outcome of this. If you feel that the outcome was unjust, you are encouraged to post in the Staff Complaints section of the forums.

I was going to leave it with just that but out of respect for you skull I’ll answer your questions. Even though these are the same questions I answered way back when.

Answer one, no, I’ve only ever done atmos and xenobiology with travis.

Answer two, Travis has a phd in bluespace xenology (study of bluespace and creatures associated with bluespace) and a minor in atmos tech. To translate this in game, He knows xenobiology as it relates to bluespace. He knows telescience, and he knows atmos tech. This is a fairly straight forward duel major/majorminor situation and easily attained for a 30 year old. Let alone a 35 year old. Which im still butthurt that I had to wrekcon in the first place.

Answer three, the previously agreed upon deal is fine with me, it’s recently been verified by scopes that assisting with a breach can be done under atmos tech (breach fixing is something travis rarely ever does anyway).

I havn’t even gotten into the amount of other charaters that jump departments fairly frequently on this server and I won’t bother. But, since delta’s taken a couple of shots at me I guess I’ll do the same.

Don't know about you, but I got yelled at for pulling shit like this. I also believe I spoke with Skull once about department hopping, and that it's only okay if the department you're hopping to is just an assistant-level position. That is not the case here.

Delta..you actively play Talia Varick right? Talia who is a Head of Security (which requires advance understanding of SOP, Law, officer conduct, and must have a basic level of understanding of the rest of security), and a Research director (which requires one phd in a specific study and high level of understanding of multiple branches of research and basic understanding of the rest…not to mention the command training both those positions require. If you have such a hard time with Travis who has one simple major and one minor, please I’d love to hear your justification on talia…actually on second thought never mind, not here anyway, enjoy defending yourself on your own player complaint about this very topic. I’ll post it for you later this week.

fail. Talia is an RD, not a head of security. Her records are strictly filled out on Xenobiology and Anomaly studies. She has doctorates in both and a master's in plasma/phoron applications. She's 44.

maybe if you actually knew the difference between Talia and Vira you would know that. you butt.

also. I don't play Talia as much as I used to, as I pretty much exhausted every fun way I can mess with science mechanics within her field of knowledge. I play her every once in awhile if security or any of the other departments aren't doing it for me.

cute job trying to attack me back, though.

eh very well. Figured there had to be another explanation then you being obviously bias.

*edit*

but if you have such an easy time understanding having two degrees with vira what deficiency do you have in understanding travis has two degrees as well?

I'll get back to this thread tomorrow, after some rest. In the mean time, two requests: Delta, stop sparking. And can Vallrae, Dea and TheFurry figure out how there's apparently a rather large discrepancy between claimed observations, and claimed status quo? (Namely, how TheFurry claims that he wasn't fixing up breaches, but you folks claim that he was?)

so only once in the existence of travis have I ever fixed a breach solo. and I hardly did that, manfred had to help. any other time I've been around breaches its because I was assisting other engineers fixing breaching. and in the end its irrelevant because i varied with scopes that its ok to fix breaches.

Is no one reading this? This issue was solved? Honestly you can have problems with the character but if your problem was already solved, its not going to help anyone by screaming about it. A person should not have to defend himself this many times. Christing fuck its actually rather annoying to the level of bullying someone over an issue that has already been solved.

Admins have dealt with this. Stop bickering to bicker. Its over. Its the Aurora Forums, not the US Senate.

I have never seen Travis Davis work the difficult atmospheric issues by himself. He is very much in training - while he doesn't wear the regulation uniform, he very much operates as an apprentice. This complaint is outdated by a very long time, and administration has cleared it up immediately.

Well uh...I have? two-three days ago. So I'd hardly call that outdated

No. It wasn't.

Valkrae didn't just wake up several days ago, say "I FUCKING HATE FURRIES" and decide to make this complaint like several people seem so intent on believing. I, an retired admin with literally nothing against Thefurry. Am saying that I saw Travis, as a Atmos tech, exercise far beyond the knowledge he was allowed. Rebuilding an entire section of the hull singlehandedly, now if you care to believe Furry over me and Valkrae. That's an entirely different issue.

I don't have an issue against TheFurry as a player, I do have an issue with his character Travis. The point of this complaint wasn't to bring hatred to TheFurry, merely to bring notice to Travis Davis, and how I disagree with how the character is hired by NanoTrasen.

Wow the fact that I have to constantly defend myself over every action…it just gets tiring. But fine, let me explain in detail what went on that round because apparently you weren’t paying attention to what actually happened. Even though it was verified by admins and everything was fine and well within the limited agreement we came up with 10 months ago.

Two days ago there was an explosion in mis-science causing a breach. Travis was the first one to respond to the area as Manfred and other engineers where busy with other breaches and this one was lowest priority. The Idea was to give the person that has the least amount of experience the smallest issue. Now at first I was just cleaning up debris from the explosion, simple enough. Then I started placing hall and tile down to at least seal the breach (something I verified would be ok to do). Basic breach repair and refilling the room would be well within a bachelor in atmos. Meanwhile I was calling out to manfred and other engineers requesting them to help me because travis has no idea how to run wire, fix disposals, and fix an apc that blew. You keep saying I fixed the entire thing by myself? Why am I asking on coms for someone else to help me with practically everything else other than covering the damn hole (literally the only thing Travis ever does when assisting in breach repair is cover a damn hole). Anyways… Manfred came by and started assisting in the patching up of everything. Travis started to run wire, or at least attempted to but as an assistant he had his ass handed to him when he got a severe shock by a live wire. At which point he would have gone to medical but by this time I was being bwoinked by admins because someone somehow thought I was just doing everything all by myself being some kind of glory engineer (even though the hall wasn’t even close to being fixed) and I decided to just cyro.

Now how do we go from Travis derping his best to cover a hole, pick up a few broken pieces of glass, then shocking his ass to ‘omg he fixed the whole damn thing by himself’ were you even paying attention? Fuck I’m so tired of defending myself…I used to be so pleasant on the forums too.

*edit*

I cyroed well before the breach was even fixed, so idk how you got I fixed the damn thing. but just for some clarification, the only reason i started placing wire oocly(as travis doesn't know how to do it icly) is because travis is full of himself and over confident. and what would most likely happen to an over confident assistant? they would attempt to do something they don't know how to do and get their ass handed to them for it. which is exactly what i was intending on rping.
