cloud
BYOND Key: Cloud_motion Character Names: Kizzy Jenson, Owl, Miranda Steele Species you are applying to play: IPC What color do you plan on making your first alien character (Dionaea & IPCs exempt): Have you read our lore section's page on this species?: Yes Why do you wish to play this specific race: I've been playing synthetics a lot recently, and they're probably my favorite because you actively have to restrict yourself in terms of laws and directives. Makes for a nice change and makes me monitor what I do, before I do it. The idea of playing as a synthetic and having grief with Skrell/Atlas supporters in particular seems pretty fun to me as well. And I feel like even though playing as an AI is fun, it's difficult to get the interaction that you'd get from being an actual mob. Identify what makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a Human: Having directives and laws in place forces them to, naturally, act completely different to humans. They're likely to be more calculating and logical in responses, and emotions aren't going to factor in to anything as much, if at all. Character Name: Owl Please provide a short backstory for this character, approximately 2 paragraphs Owl was originally manufactured in 2451 as a commercial product for public-sector and private ship systems. Garnering a decent amount of success, the product was later sold to Einstein Engines in an exclusive contract that expired in 2454, at which point funding ran out for the father-company: Owl Inc. The success beforehand was mainly with facilities that had small crew numbers for extended periods of time, such as long haul ships; primarily due to programming and operating situations, Owl installations were typically viewed as 'one of the crew'. However, due to the rapid and ever-changing market, Owl Inc was quickly bought out and merged with SilverLinings Inc. Seeing promise in the system, the new owners decided to tinker with the personality emulator to impose a less 'organic' and thus more efficient design, in the hopes of more commercial success and breaking into larger markets. To the dismay of first generation Owl users, firmware updates were pushed out with the new design, effectively resetting Owl's personality and interactions with its former crews... and consequently building quite a bit of loathing for the new father company. The Owl baseline as it's seen today is the culmination of eight years work and widespread service. SilverLinings hope to push into the Shell market to reconcile some of the trust previously lost with its customers, in an attempt at a more personal and hands-on experience. As a result, any installations currently contracted with an Owl AI unit will receive a first generation Shell in good will. In contract with the Aurora, SilverLinings only have one active Intelligence, and thus only one Shell will be in operation at any one time. The Shell itself is the arduous end result of work by SilverLinings software engineers, and couples with the somewhat 'mothering' personality that users have become accustomed to. The Shell version of Owl is likely to be equipped with medicinal and anatomical databases, with further capabilities available upon request. Due to the Owl unit itself not being actively contracted or otherwise free from subservience, payroll will not be expected to contract the Shell a wage, or cover any costs beyond equipment usage and maintenance; as indicated in the contract. Furthermore, one can expect the same level of consistency in-terms of directives as a station-bound would be expected to follow. What do you like about this character? I like the idea of playing a character who's software/personality is designed to be everywhere at once in a ship or station's systems, then taking that capability and stripping it down to what is comparatively a severely limited, alpha version of itself. I think it could lead to some interesting situations where-in the character may end up disoriented or otherwise challenged at times. Plus I think playing as something that is more of a product to be sold, used and eventually disposed of allows for some pretty neat existential thoughts on an Intelligence that is otherwise designed to think and mostly act positive. How would you rate your role-playing ability? I'm okay I suppose. Never understood why this was on the template. Notes: Edited August 12, 2017 by Guest Link to comment
MoondancerPony
Your backstory is interesting, your answers are very good, and from what I've seen of Owl the station AI you're very good at roleplaying synthetics. Definite +1 from me. Link to comment

BRAINOS
I've had nothin' but great rounds with both Kizzy and Owl - Cloud's demonstrated very tip-top RP capability in the past and manages to do it without the need for brooding, sad characters or hours of chair RP. Owl, as an AI, is one of my favorite AI's in just the three or so rounds I've seen them in. They're attentive to the crew and manage to somehow pull off what's needed to be everywhere at once while dealing with client crashes, multiple station emergencies and several requests from the crew at any given time. Owl's character is a pretty entertaining take on the 'mom AI' thing that a lot of people run with, and at the same time, Owl is still clearly a synthetic intelligence, and it's hard for me to put my finger on exactly how they pull that off, but whatever it is, I'll take it as evidence they know how to play a believable synth character, for sure. Kizzy is obviously a human, of course, but in relevance to the application here, I'd like to point out that Kizzy's an excellently developed and nuanced character. Able to hold a conversation and form friendships with crewmembers, Kizzy's a believable member of the crew with her own ambitions, ideas and opinions. Overall, Cloud's got this whole arpee thing down, and I wholeheartedly support giving them more opportunities to drive the story we're all part of here. If I could give this a +2, I would. AllyBearsley
Ah, let me say Kizzy Jenson is a refreshing char to play with in engineering even though she's stolen my apprentice spot more than once. She's nice, energetic, talkative to CREW OUTSIDE ENGINEERING and seems to just want to help the station. Owl is an AI that doesn't make me sigh deeply or cringe based on its very existence. In my experience Owl is a very solid, useful AI. As for Cloud Motion OOCly I haven't seen much of them (at least I don't think) and can think of nothing negative to say on their end. Not everyone needs to be active OOCly so this is absolutely fine. I'd rather have less OOC interaction with a person than have a lot of it being negative. To the app. Very good app, I'm liking what I've been seeing from IPC applications. Even mine was pretty barebones, but now people are really thinking of ways to spice up the IPC playerbase with some interesting thought out IPCs. I like the company dynamic you went with and the fact that even though you're bringing OWL to IPC form but not just suddenly having the AI in a robot body. You're giving it a reset (and could even be giving us a different OWL all together). Only problem is the backstory is a little short. I'd love to know what jobs OWL will be specializing in. What kind of training this IPC has. I think that'll definitely ease any feelings I have that the app is in danger of being too short. All in all you get a big +1 from me. Link to comment

I was expecting a couple of +1s but I definitely wasn't expecting a full paragraph like that. That really made my day haha, thanks a lot for the kinds words Brainos, I really appreciate it. Thanks Ally, I appreciate the feedback on Kizzy as well, I wasn't really expecting anyone to mention her, so It's cool that people have commented on what I'm going for with her haha. Also that apprentice spot is miine thanks for the feedback on the backstory as well, I'll stick in a few extra deets later on then with regards to roles and what-not. I tend to play with ooc off mainly, anywho, though I like to muck around on looc from time to time. Who do you play? Edited August 7, 2017 by Guest Link to comment
Diggey
I'm new to the station as a player, but if there's one thing I can tell is that the stationwide AI Owl always does a good job and I adore the personality, whenever there's an issue Owl's there and Owl is pleasant Even responding to minor things and inconveniences and always talking on the right channels Owl the IPC gets my player recommendation Link to comment

Actually I've kind of put my apprentice char in a box to play other chars on station more. Very good to hear about extending the backstory a bit. Like I said it's interesting, but a little short right now and you can easily stick a few more sentences on . My four mains are Francis Martonis (Engineering Apprentice), Sheila Mortiz (Chef), THRIVE (Gardener), and Dallas Castellus (Quartermaster). Link to comment
cloud
Han Song You know the botanist/general staff assistant I do! I love Han, always a pleasure to talk to and he's a friendly guy. He was rocking it the other shift with those bees haha We shall have a duel over it! Actually I've kind of put my apprentice char in a box to play other chars on station more. I'll hold you to that but if Francis can't join, then that also means alongside Kizzy, there's another apprentice making life hard. we should team up. haha. But I like what I've seen of Francis though, and I'm certain I remember Kizzy somewhat 'rescuing' Sheila on the surface that time, that was a blast! Definitely wouldn't have made it out without her shoving the baddie haha Link to comment

Once during the blob event and second when those mercs wanted some weird gladiator ring. I actually broke the glass ring (they didn't secure one of the glass windows ;D). That was hell, but when we just put the smack down on the head merc (or whoever) it was...something. Link to comment

Oh yeah, I completely forgot about that round, that was so much fun! Especially when we were chilling up on telecomms for a bit. Then it mucked up and I somehow got blob infection, without actually having the blob infection. The deathsquad left her behind so she went and sat on the edge of the asteroid to witness her imminent, undeserved, thermonuclear detonation haha Link to comment

Tailson
Ohey ohwow I didn't realise you had an app in or I would have been all over it by now. I absolutely adore Kizzy as a character and just by seeing that name on the manifest it seriously sways me towards playing ASSIST on that shift. But this is about Owl isn't it? Owl is a great AI. Very often you can find yourself ignored by an AI due to any number of reasons, be it crises, inundation of requests or even just client crashes. You somehow manage to battle all of that and still make time for everyone on station which I find is not only great roleplay but also fucking miraculous. Not only do you know how to play fun, convincing characters, you also know how to wrestle with the game client and make it your bitch. I love the concept. Someone mentioned already that you're not just slapping an AI into a shell but you've got plenty of backstory to back it up. I really like it. Now all I'm worried about is when this app gets approved, what happens to Owl the station AI? Seriously though I can't +1 this enough. Link to comment
