[Denied] Tbear13's Head of Staff Application

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

BYOND key: Tbear13

Character names: Tyler White, security officer, Trevor Hill, warden and detective, and Nathan Langston, a medical resident

How long have you been playing on Aurora?: Around two months, I haven't been counting the days or anything.

Why do you wish to be on the whitelist?: I want to play as Head of Staff for the role-play opportunities it opens up, as well as helping newer players learn the ropes of the game.

Why did you come to Aurora?: I came to aurora because it's the only HRP server with an active playerbase.

Have you read the Aurora wiki on the head roles and qualifications you plan on playing?: Yep! Read the wiki.

Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph each.

Give a definition of what you think roleplay is, and should be about: Roleplay is essentially putting yourself in a made up characters shoes, coming up with a backstory, interacting with a world and other roleplayers, in a generally mature way. It can be about combat, general life, or anything in between. The purpose of that being either fun, or just as an escape or release of stress.

What do you think the OOC purpose of a Head of Staff is, ingame?: The purpose of any Head of Staff is to keep their department, and the ship, running smoothly. They are expected to know when and where to delegate, and when to do something themselves, as well as know enough about their department to be effective. Realistically, it'd be generally hard, or even impossible, to learn each and every job in their department, which is why delegation and leadership are their most important skills.

What do you think the OOC responsibilities of Whitelisted players are to other players, and how would you strive to uphold them?: The job of a whitelisted player is to set an example, be what players are expected to be, follow the rules, and overall make the game a better experience for everyone on the server. They are expected to assist newer players if they're needed, act mature, and be friendly, respectful people.

Please pick one of your characters for this section, and provide well articulated responses to the following questions.

Character name: Trevor Hill

Character age: 38

Please provide a short biography of this character (approx 2 paragraphs): Trevor was born to a lower-middle class family of farmers, in south eastern North America. He had a somewhat troubled childhood, often getting in fights and nearly failing in school, after coming only a few marks off of failing a school year when he was sixteen, he decided to turn himself around. He started attending church weekly, his grades picked up, and he got involved in sports. Due to his families financial situation, he couldn't afford to go to college, so he enlisted with the Sol Alliance Navy, as a Master-at-arms.

After flying through the physical aspects of training, but nearly failing on the mental aspects, he narrowly passed. Trevor served for six years aboard a few different ships. He'd nearly been booted from the Navy a few times, after a few altercations with other naval personnel. After those six years, he switched to the Naval Reserve and went off to the New Seoul Combat Training Center, where he received a bachelors degree in criminal justice after four years. During college, he kept in touch with a Nano-Transen recruiter and was hired around two months after graduating. He's worked for Nano-Transen for ten years as a Warden, this giving him a total of sixteen years of security-related experience. He decided to apply for the role of Head of Security halfway through his tenth year.

What do you like about this character?: I find his balance of humor and seriousness to be just about perfect for an enjoyable roleplay.

What do you dislike about this character?: He has a fairly short fuse, and his dry humor is often considered annoying.

What do you think makes this character fit to be a head of staff?: He has the experience and education he'd need to be a good head of security in my opinion.

Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions.

How would you rate your own roleplaying?: I'd give myself an 8/10. I usually roleplay decently, but during combat and other fast paced things, I usually skip out on a lot of roleplay opportunities.

Extra notes: Excuse any grammatical or lore mistakes, if you notice any please point them out. I was a bit rushed when I made this. I'd love to hear any feedback y'all have, good or bad!

Tyler White is really the only character of his I've actually seen. I've been his HoS and been a cadet under his supervision. Both times he felt like a decent character. Followed orders, wasn't a general asshole, had his own personality rather than being a blank slate or over-accentuated caricature. He isn't the standard asshole sec officer nor does he think shooting his way out of a problem is the only solution. All of these I personally like about him. Can't say much about the other characters but since this is a HoS app, I'm assuming this is the one that matters the most so definite +1.

How many years of security related experience does he have? Does he have a relevant bachelor's or masters? When was he hired by Nanotrasen?

First off, thanks for pointing that out. I was kinda rushed as I made the application, so I missed a few things like that, my mistake, I'll edit to fix those issue. This wasn't my primary character and I never had a fleshed out backstory for them, but my favorite character's age and backstory just wouldn't work with the HoS position in my opinion. And again, thank you for the feedback!

Thanks for the feedback! Trevor Hill, the character I would play as an HoS, is something of a more sarcastic and less enthusiastic version of Tyler with a more management based skillset.

Trevor stripped me of my headset as a prisoner being booked for assault (6 minute sentence), despite my comment that I did not believe that to be correct procedure. He was also painfully slow in returning my gear to me after release (did not put it all in the cell locker like he should have). I was overplaying my frustration with sec as I was an antag vamp who framed an antag sec changeling after I was caught dragging the ling CSI into maintenance to feed, still, there was no excuse for the breach of protocol. CSI was subsequently caught feeding and I was released. It took the warden (Trevor) more than 10 minutes to return my bag and items, despite no fewer than seven requests for my items. Had to ahelp twice. Once for the headset and again for my items.

-1 needs more experience and needs to review procedures more.

As I told you at that time, I was dealing with the CSI, a ling, stabbing himself with a lightbulb. I believe a prisoner dying is more important than you having to wait two minutes for gear. And it wasn't ten minutes, that's a blatant lie. Thanks for the feedback though, I understand your frustration and I'm very sorry about that situation, but which would you consider a priority, the QM who my character hated ICly waiting on a backpack, or the CSI "demon" as we called it that round, killing himself?

In my opinion 2 months isn't enough experience. Give it a few more and I'll support it.

Thanks for the feedback, first of all. I understand why you feel that way, I personally don't agree though. I find it's much better to judge someone based off of actual ability, rather than experience. I hope you see where I'm coming from, thanks again for the feedback!

I'm not sure I can support this application. The answers to the questions are alright. I don't see any particularly outstanding issues there.

However. You've said that you rushed this application yourself, which made you neglect the requirements to be a Head of Security - which you did state that you read the wiki earlier on. Which isn't a good sign, but I'm willing to not pay too much mind to that. It happens.

Onto the character itself. I'm not sure why Nanotrasen would implant and promote a person with a short fuse out of other candidates. Having a fairly short fuse is definitely not something you want in a Head of Security at all, considering how stressful the job is, but then again they're implanted. I'm also not much of a fan of your answer to the "What makes your character fit to be a head of staff" question. Your answer is basically an answer that anyone can give about any character. You can write a character on the spot and give them 10 years of experience and a bachelor's without any real backstory, and the answer would be the exact same. There is nothing noticeable in your backstory or your answers that makes me think "This character would be good as a Head of Security". It seems like the average security officer, more than anything. Your backstory is also lacking in my opinion. It's not very long, neither does it define who Hill is as a person. I'm not too keen on that.

Onto your actual OOC and IC conduct. I haven't seen much of you OOC, except you calling my character out on something I never did, but that doesn't matter now. I'm willing to pass over that too. I haven't seen much of your warden play, but how you neglect punctuation IC isn't a very good sign of an 8/10 roleplayer. I'd expect a roleplayer that gives themselves an 8/10, but that's also something I'm willing to pass over. Considering the answers that other people have given and what I've observed of you in game, I'm not going to support this application. I'm going to lean towards a -1.

Please don't call me a liar. Perhaps with things happening you didn't realize how long I was waiting. And, perhaps I am unfairly adding the time for the confusion in sec after I fed on you. I recall it being a very long time, longer than my time in a cell. I would not lie, especially in a Head of Staff application. One of us is mistaken, but there's no lying going on here.

What concerned me is that I tried to communicate to you an absurd number of times that I needed my gear (no fewer than seven is a pretty safe estimate) both locally, in common comms, in bold text, and finally via ahelp... and you didn't listen. I was standing next to the cell you had originally placed me in where I had items strewn clearly on the ground inside. I had pointed out when I was being moved to a new cell that my items were inside and you promised that I would get them back. I think you were on autopilot, which I get can happen in security (though, again, that prisoner causing problems didn't happen until the last 20% or so of our interaction. I don't know how your headset was otherwise blowing up though, but you were nearby that entire initial time). But a Head of Staff needs to be able to communicate, especially when security is involved (I have been playing here for just over a month but played command for two years on Paradise Station prior to coming here). And from that interaction, I do note that your communication fell short. That's all.

Thanks for the feedback! To clear that up, I didn't rush just cause I didn't feel like doing much in the application, I was doing something with other highschoolers from my church later that day and I got started later than I meant to. As I said in an earlier comment, I essentially made up this characters backstory as I wrote it, he was never my primary character and I only realized my favorite character, who has a much better backstory would be a bad fit for HoS halfway through the application. I understand the backstory was below average, at best. Writing is probably my weakest school subject, I'm awful at writing good paragraphs or backstories, I can do the shorter, more interactive RP kinda thing fine though. As far as that OOC interaction goes, I believe we cleared that up a minute or so later. According to MrModeste, he played Erana at the time of the incident I'd named, I'm not 100% sure if that's true though. Thanks for the feedback, once again.

First off, sorry I had called you a liar, shouldn't have done that, my bad. But I wouldn't say adding in the time that security was trying to figure out why I had called out that you attacked me makes much sense, As I said earlier, I can't be everywhere at once, you wanting your gear back was at the bottom of my priorities, compared to a ling killing itself and security struggling to figure out what kind of monsters (vamps and lings) were attacking, what they did, and who they were.

I'm going to have to deny this application for a few reasons.

You did receive in-depth feedback, but a lot of it pointed out issues in your gameplay and playstyle. It's not that you were bad as a security player, it just needs a bit more work. You show you can follow orders and do work, it's simply the fact that a Head of Security faces things from a whole different angles, and after the Captain, have the most influence to the round, easily making it or breaking it.

My advice to you is to play a while more, maybe try applying in two weeks time. There's a security discord which you're part of where you can ask for feedback and to try to get interim when possible. I hope this doesn't discourage you and that you apply again in the future. Best of luck to you.
