I like the idea of the meeting room being separate from the main bridge. They're two rooms that serve clearly different functions, and having a conference room be in the exact same place as the heart and core of the station feels a bit weird. Yes, the current meeting room is too small, but rearranging it is not an easy fix.

Can we look at the issue from a game balance perspective while we're already at it? I mean, I'm not even going to go into the specifics of light-rp, but you'd think that on a heavy-rp server, a gamemode based on progression and escalation wouldn't possess a workaround letting the antag unlock all of their powers/abilities immediately with minimal RP or effort. Changeling is about being a serial killer. Changelings who are successful at killing multiple people without getting caught are rewarded with stronger abilities, thus encouraging them to preserve the serial killer MO while favoring a stealthier/more subtle approach. If feeding on monkeys isn't playing to win, why is it still an existing game mechanic nevertheless? It does not create any roleplay, and if anything, puts changelings willing to eat all the tasty monkeys at a clear advantage over those actually putting effort into finding worthwhile victims. Could we make it so lings can only get DNA from mobs with a valid (or ghosted) ckey?

Ohh, I can totes answer that one since I actually worked on clarifying the rules. (Can I still answer? If not, slap me.) ERP was never really allowed, we simply used to have ambiguous rules on it. Thing is there's two kinds of ERP, hardcore 18+ textfucking, and "erotic" situations (that might go as far as sitting on someone's lap while making out with them, but nothing above what you'd see in a PG13 movie). Textfucking did happen, although rarely, and when it did it usually got broken up through adminabuse rather than contacting the players, because honestly, it's damn awkward to PM two people to tell them they're not supposed to get their rocks off on server. Plus dropping a dead clown on people trying to fuck is hilarious. Eventually a few people began complaining because they were either engaging in clearly 18+ activities (lying naked on top of each other on tables, etc) or fondling each other in maintenance tunnels when they should have clearly been doing their jobs (heads during red alert, come on). We broke them up with a variety of entertaining things, including honk mechs, exploding clowns, spider infestations, carps, and killer trees. They started getting upset, and at that point we noticed that the rule on ERP wasn't really clear at all. Whoops. Basically, the server's previous rule allowed ERP under the "suggestive but not actual sex" category. People had to extrapolate from that (which they should've been able to), but it didn't clearly say "don't bang". So we added that. End of story.

No worries. That seems like a pretty stupid thing to ban someone for, unless something else happened I can't say I really understand what Bay staff is doing at times. -
Mod Application take two: OneOneThreeEight
Frances replied to a topic in Moderator Applications Archives
That seems rather contradictory to the rest of what you've been posting. I don't know what you see as the truth. However, I might suggest that you should not try to make up for actions with words, but rather look at the actions themselves, and what you can do about them. Otherwise, your words end up being a mere crutch which holds you back from your full potential. Don't rely on them as strongly, so you can focus on improving what's important. -
Frankly surprised to see this here, maybe it's actually more well-known that I thought. Anyway, it's an absolutely lovely film. So is Blade Runner, cyberpunk is great.

The thing is no new posts will actually bring you anything. Explanations and promises can actually go in your favor when you're not known (and people are willing to take a chance), but once you become a regular member of a community, people will judge you through your actions first and foremost, no matter who you are. There's really no need to write anything else. You've changed? Just show it. People will take notice, easy as that. -
I'll try to present my point more clearly. Right now, a user could create an AI which is pretty much a direct copy of John Travolta's personality, and name it "Travolta". There's nothing wrong with this imo, as long as you don't start naming your AIs Hitler or anything of the like (which would probably warrant admin intervention anyway). The proposed rule change would eliminate references to other AIs (SHODAN, GLaDOS, etc.) but would also prevent AIs from being overt references to other famous personalities. You could still have a John Travolta AI, however you would be unable to reference to the fact that you were programmed to mimic Travolta's personality by some semi-insane scientist. In the hope of not losing that, I would like to suggest we impose a specific ban on names of famous AIs only. (And yes, I already see some people coming to tell me that Aurora is a serious server and that no decent scientists/corporations would program an AI after the personality of some age-old celebrity, to which I'll retort that players already do silly AIs all the time, and it's actually pretty fun, if not at least manageable. It's a matter of opinion though, really.)
-
Even so, wouldn't it be preferable to let people name AIs after references if they wish (in good taste)? I thought the main issue (at least it was when I made the original thread) was to get rid of blatant references to other AIs (the problem isn't the referencing itself, it's the copycat storytelling).

Nanotoxin's Moderator Application

Quick question, looking at your app. You say you came here after being banned from Bay. Is this referring to your one-day ban, or was there a later incident which led to you changing servers? -
Could we have a third option? I have nothing against gimmicky AIs trying to copy the personality of say, Einstein. My issue was always about AIs copying other AIs.
-
I am pretty sure it could be implemented nevertheless (with a var check?), but I'd rather not see it, because it takes away a lot of power from ling and player monkeys (being completely blocked out of a door, anyone?)

That was indeed my point from the start. The "common sense" route, lore-wise, has been toyed with for Tajarans and Unathi to allow them more gameplay and story freedom. If people want these limitations to be enforced for IPCs, they must understand they should be put back onto other races out of a sense of fairness. This is one of the main complaints of IPC players - that Tajaran and Unathi players get to play their characters in whatever roles they want, yet they can't do the same with theirs for seemingly no valid reason.

Nobody should have to rely on another job being filled to gain access to their basic equipment. I don't know how things are currently set up, but the easiest solution would be to lock the gun away in a locker that can only be accessed by the detective, within the office. (You can even keep the old fashioned cabinets, there's a locking version of them the bartender has).
-
20-40 years, afaik. Last time humanity discovered a different race (of humans, no less) on a new continent, it took more than two decades for them to trust them in important management roles. You're throwing a lore argument at me, I'm throwing one back at you.

Balds are hilarious, though. Like, come on.

The kissing in maintenance tunnels was merely an example I was giving. Favoritism isn't mainly restricted to that, but to IC or OOC cliques.

That's amazing. Anyway, idk who's going to post on this app (probably lots of people), but since nobody has yet I'll open by saying that I've seen Tishina's capabilities as a writer and storyteller firsthand. He's extremely capable of imagining believable characters and situations, and would probably play some pretty great heads. (And like, seriously, you didn't have whitelist yet? Let me laugh at you.)

I'm aware that Thundy has been granted trialmod, but I'm still jumping on the bandwagon to agree that the LOOC log posted by Aqy makes me very uncomfortable.

Tytos_Tyris' Moderation app
Frances replied to Vittorio Giurifiglio's topic in Moderator Applications Archives
Image is important. You actually can't get away with (many) offensive jokes as a mod anymore. (There... were staff that did that, and were given the boot for it). So, I'm going to be talking a bit about image. I think you're a good roleplayer, and most people will agree that your characters are interesting and present good depth and contrast. However, what you're presenting here is an app to become a 15-year old moderator with irl fascist tendancies. (I don't remember exactly what your political affiliation was so apologies if I didn't explain it correctly). And this doesn't... look good. Like the fact that your actions both OOC and IC are tainted with that small bit of fascist pride - you haven't gone out of your way to offend anyone on purpose, and I honestly do not mind it that much as a player, but as a mod that's a completely different game. I trust you understand that, given you've actually mentioned your OOC conduct and how you were planning to modify it. But that is something you will have to do before becoming a mod, and truth is, a reputation like that can be really hard to get rid of. I used to be a huge troll. I'd actually lurk on forums and post exclusively to fuck with people. Because it was funny, because I hated the mods in some places, and because there was this "social" aspect of basically being a community's Robin Hood. But in full honesty, most people probably just thought I was a cunt, and I was never given any credit for my posting (though it was fun). I'm obviously not interested in fucking around on Aurora. And I did end up becoming headmin of the server for a bit, because I was able to convey I was interested in supporting and improving the community. But it was a lot easier because I never did any of the stupid shit on here I would've done in other places. For you, I don't know. A precedent is much harder to get rid of once it's been established. And I apologize if this seems harsh, because my intent is purely to look at facts and situations here. I'm not judging you personally. I don't really have a positive or negative opinion of you, your personality, or your values. But you do aknowledge your reputation might be problematic to your desire to become a mod, and I follow up by confirming that I 100% think it would be. I guess the question would be, could you realistically dissociate yourself from that in this community? Is it a trouble you believe is worth going through to become a mod? Of course, I'm just some gal posting on a forum now. If the current staff decides to be more welcoming and trusting than me, and give you a chance right off, then all the better for you. But I wouldn't expect it to happen soon. -
Without making an extensive list of examples, I sadly have to agree that Mirk overall hasn't displayed the level of maturity found in the rest of our (current) mod team. It's really a matter of, personal development, I think. Give it some time. Don't try to change your behavior, as much as be attentive to it, understand how people react and why they react negatively when they do. People should also tell you when there's an issue, obviously. Not everyone is good at that.

Mod Application take two: OneOneThreeEight
Frances replied to a topic in Moderator Applications Archives
Probably not the post you want to hear, nor from the player you'd like. But since you seem to be eager for some feedback, here, observer's opinion. You're good at talking. I think that's your strongest point, the fact that you don't mind being active, sharing your opinions, going out and having a conversation with people. It is definitely what I would capitalize on: develop your ability to talk, think about the way you interact with people and how it can serve you while bettering the community. (And you don't actually have to enforce the rules as a regular player to get promoted to a mod. Helping people is far more important than reminding them of the rules.) However, here is my fear: the actions backing up your talk are not so good. I'm not the best placed to speak anymore due to my inactivity on the server (which is why I'm no longer an admin), but one thing I noticed, and saw other users point out is that while you're able to write damn good speeches about whatever events might currently be going on, your actions remain problematic. Staff has had to strip your whitelist for consistent powergaming & related issues, and your most recent reapplication, not too long ago, has equally been denied. All of these events are far too fresh in my mind to make you deserving of a mod position. You speak of improved behavior, now is your chance to demonstrate it. People don't get responsibilities through promises, but through actions. If you can actually demonstrate improvement, you would have sizeable chances for the server's next mod application round, but I don't think you'll be making this one. -
The only instance of this problem I've seen is security sometimes being utterly stupid. Arresting people for taking tools out of tool storage (bald female chef had a screwdriver, security arrested her because ?) I played a variety of characters who were not recognized throughout my time on the server (in fact I'm fairly certain most people have no idea what most of my characters were besides some regular Tajarans) and I have to say that while socializing was difficult at times, I mostly faced the hurdles that any new employee would face. (People don't trust you, some people are going to be asocial dicks, but not everyone is and some people are gonna be pretty welcoming and helpful once they see you attempt to roleplay decently). The crux of this issue is not the server's overall behavior, but small cliques of people who enable each others' toxic behavior, for example heads engaging in blatant displays of favoritism (most often towards other characters they are romantically engaged with) and people shying away not from socializing ICly, but from roleplaying OOCly with people they don't know. (Come on guys, I know meeting new people is scary, but make an effort.) And like, of course you shouldn't act like an idiot towards a new player (for example breaking your own RP by assuming a new character is there to grief), but characters have no obligation to be friendly to newcomers. Favoritism is the issue.

XChrisUnknownX227 Event Mod App
Frances replied to XChrisUnknownX's topic in Moderator Applications Archives
Further clarification. Unless things changed drastically in the past week since I've left, there are two ranks for events: Event Hosts and Moderator Event Hosts. They're basically the same: temporary, limited admin powers with the intent of running an event. The difference is one rank also gives (preserves) access to mod tools for people who are already mods. The other rank (non-mod event host) can be given to non-mods/admins to run events, though these people are hand-picked under certain circumstances, and tend to be members of the community the staff already trusts. (Don't see it as a privilege, it's more logistics, like the staff can only really afford to let people who they know won't fuck up run events, because otherwise it can create a really crappy round for everyone). Hope that clears it up. If you're interested in running events, but also like the idea of moderating, I'd suggest applying as a regular mod and working your way up the ranks. That's actually the reason why I first joined the staff on Aurora, because I wanted to run events. (And yes, I got to.) -
Cream is used for a lot more drinks than milk, and isn't used in cooking that I know of. As for the IC reason, well, it stops making sense there. The whole thing looks like an oversight to me. Anyway, the question is, do we really care about milk being a limited resource? Considering the kitchen already has free alcohol from the ice cream machine, and no one gives a shit about anything that goes on in the kitchen balance-wise, anyway.
