Having coffees actually make people faster won't be so easy. There's only one effect in the game that does that, iirc. CE_SPEEDBOOST, and it doesn't make you faster than normal, only nullifies movespeed penalties. It's quite restricted, only being found in hyperzine, and the very rare Nuka Cola drink (which needs uranium to make). I get the impression it's not intended to be handed out easily. Maybe if it only lasted a really short time, and drinking too much caffiene damaged your heart so you couldn't just massively overdose to abuse it. (that would also be pretty realistic, caffiene is dangerous in large quantities. People have died from it) There are a couple of alcoholic drinks in the bar menu that already involve coffee in some form - Kahlua is coffee liqueur And we definitely do already have cafe latte (and soy latte) so more milky coffee is redundant

Yep, she's right. After that thread notified me of it, i went and explored the code myself to confirm, and then documented it on the wiki https://aurorastation.org/wiki/index.php?title=Guide_to_Food_and_Drinks Several drinks, including milk, milky coffees, tomato juice, lime juice, orange juice, carrot juice, and tea, have fairly significant medicinal effects, and can stand in for a visit to medical for minor conditions. I'm going to have to start teaching engineers to drink more tea. Maybe i'll deliver it to them. Do you think i can give engineers medical orders to drink a cup of tea? they have a soft drinks machine right there in their breakroom

honestly i'd prefer a brown cup with a forest-green stripe

I've combed through the file and noted down every hidden effect i could find, the wiki now documents them properly https://aurorastation.org/wiki/index.php?title=Guide_to_Food_and_Drinks Let me know if i missed anything

I've been working with Carl Duran recently. he is...odd There's no question he's bad at his job. He's a lazy chemist who makes and abuses his own narcotics. But he does it with colourful emotes and communication and roleplaying. It kind of seems like he actually wants to RP an abusive incompetent chemist, presumably to the eventual conclusion of IAA involvement and termination. I'm not really sure what to think of this.

You know, sprinting requires contact with a solid surface The Odysseus should really have a built in jetpack imo. it's not actually useful for EVA as is

[Accepted] Nanako's Head of Staff application
Nanako replied to Nanako's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
I remember this event. We spent like 20 minutes discussing things, you didn't order me to use liquids. I assumed we were having a friendly professional discussion about medical methods, you weren't ordering me to do things your way. We both had arguments, we both made them, neither side convinced the other, and i didn't feel you were obligating me to do things your way, so i carried on doing mine. I would have used liquids if you'd ordered it. It seemed like we were just discussing our personal opinions, perhaps there was a misunderstanding about the implications of that conversation. I was giving you plenty of respect, and holding a fairly intellectual, civil conversation with you, which has always been a mark of respect in my book I disagree. As i tried to explain in that conversation, a pill bottle allows me to hold fourteen dose (of varying medications) in a single inventory slot, Inventory management is a major issue for doctors, and i can't often spare three inventory slots for dexplus, bicard, and dermaline. there's no right answer here, pills vs liquids comes down to several factors -
I love you <3

it'd be helpful if you could list the contained reagents that cause these things, or are they direct affect_blood calls?

But adding flair is the exact reason i'm using exclamation marks, and this lack of control over it is making me not want to use them. People can always add flair in lots of ways, your new parsing idea will help add new ways of adding flair and emphasis to words, and to shout the whole thing. This is a case where randomness is bad, it's taking control away from players.
-
Your solution isn't going to affect verbs though, unless you're stripping out all non-say verbs. Rewrite what? Say.dm, line 107. A slight alteration is all that's needed to implement this, it'd take zero effort, and won't interfere with your parser idea at all.
-
The intent was to emphasise the statement. It's a little louder than normal speech, certainly, but it's not 'ow my hears hurt' loud (which is exactly how the person in question reacted) You would, but i wouldn't, so maybe it's just a personal difference. but when the verb very clearly says shouts, what are you supposed to expect other than that they're shouting? The problem, ultimately. is that i want to exclaim, and not to shout. They are similar, but not identical things. The only way to exclaim is either to use me's and write it manually (which is more work and prone to typos), or submit to randomness at 33% odds

No i exclaimed something like 'Hey i like your hat!'

Hi, my name came up a bit, i suppose i should post. I didn't know anyone here before i came to aurora, there's nobody here that i've met in real life, and only a handful that i talk to much outside of the server. Lucychan/crazytoast is a person i play with a lot though and i guess we're sorta good friends. she's been a great companion in medical RE: My head application. It was startling, a lot of names there of people i don't interact with much, but who apparently had a lot to say about me. And a lot of the people I DO interact with regularly and considered close friends, didn't bother to post there. The whole affair was/is kind of depressing, i tried to be mature about it and deal with my butthurt privately. i've been drunk for three days straight, but it is my birthday now. Most of the replies there seemed to have some good intentions behind them, there were a couple that just seemed flat out vindictive, but i won't name names I guess it was startling because, aside from that thread, i've not felt disliked here. My loredev application got accepted a little while before, and the staff have been very welcoming, and quite full of praise for some of the stuff i've been doing. RE Skull: I pretty quickly came to realise what he's like, and accomodated for his personality. I've known a couple of other people like him - People who can be blunt, and who you can hold an argument with, without taking it personally. We occasionally have intense discussions about stuff and he seems to not be building up resentment towards me, so that's good. I don't mind anything from him, skull is a cool guy. There are a couple of people in the aurora community i intensely dislike, and would rather they weren't here, but discretion is the better part of valour. And its not my place to try to pursue vendettas against established people just because we don't get along. RE Lesbay, i heard that word a lot before, and i immediately decided the best choice was to just not let it affect me, i've just consciously ignored that cliche, and not actively tries to either conform or avoid it. Maybe my characters fit it or don't, i don't know or care. Most of the people here are pretty cool, i like aurora, hopefully another application in future will go better and we can forget the mess that the previous one ended up in. Some of the mess was literal and my fault. Did you know lore devs have forum moderator powers in a couple of places? I accidentally edited two posts in that thread with my mod powers, when i meant to quote them, destroying the original in both cases, one still hasn't been fixed, not sure if can. In any case, i've got lots to learn and do, just gotta keep soldiering on

They're different degrees of emphasis. Exclaiming is something you do to make a point when you're talking to someone. Shouting is what you do when someone's really far away, or you're angry at them One is socially acceptable and one is not. And i've had people telling my characters off because i shouted at them due to the random speech verb selection, and had to explain it in looc

Normally 3D Sounds would be the term, but since we're in a twodimensional environment, i'm not sure that fits. I'm used to working in 3D engines Right now, as far as i can tell, hallucinations use 2D (or 1D?) sounds. That is, the sounds are just played straight to the user, and not modified or offset. They play at full volume equally from both speakers, and as a result they sound like they're happening right ontop of you This can be startling the first few times it happens, but you quickly get used to it and tune it out. The fact that the sounds are happening right ontop of you is an easy way to tell that it's not real, and i think that kind of defeats the purpose. I'd propose instead, that these sounds are triggered on a location. In the case of airlock sounds, gunshots, etc, they can sound like they came from somewhere just offscreen, which will make you want to go see what happened. In the case of explosions, i think they should usually be far away. Use the distant echoing explosion sound that we hear when a bomb goes off in science, rather than an obnoxious explosion-right-ontop-of-you sound. The idea here, is to make hallucinations more convincing, to make it harder to tell what's real and what's not.

whoa, its okay, don't worry, Skull is just like this, he's blunt, i'm blunt, sometimes we have long arguments in OOC about various things I actually rather enjoy this relationship, i'm sure he doesn't mean to come across as hostile Back on the original topic, The various ideas about bolding, and especially skull's simple parser idea, actually don't conflict with this one. He specifically said it won't affect speech verbs, and so it won't affect this issue at all It will provide more options for emphasising and shouting things, which i think only makes this idea more valid. We don't need shout/yell as speech verbs for exclamation marks It's right in the name, exclamation. It should be used for exclaiming, nothing else

On code red, security is usually too busy to hunt for regulation breaking assistants, especially if its a <5 minutes sentence not if that's what they're busy with. when there's a traitor around, a list of who has no sensors enabled is almost certain to include the traitor Security often ends up at code red because bombing/shooting/corpses, but has no leads. Following up on a list of possible suspects is something a detective can do.

At present, i am acting on the following beliefs: 1. At Code Green: No suit sensors are required, any setting is allowed 2. At Code Blue: All suit sensors must be set to at least Vitals Tracker 3. At Code Red: All suit sensors must be set to Tracking Beacon (ie, the highest setting) 4. In any case where suit sensors have a minimum requirement, not setting them to that level is a crime, and the perpetrator should be reported to security. I cannot firmly remember who told me these, but i know it came from some combination of asking skull directly, and ahelping (can't remember who answered). I have been acting on these beliefs with impunity, and often, when i have the time, i'll comb through the manifest to find who isn't following the rules, contact them informing them of the requirements, and report them if they don't comply. In any case the purpose of this thread is simple. Am I wrong? If the above beliefs are not correct, then what is. I need an authoritative answer about what suit sensors are required by procedure, at what alert levels. If the above is wrong, then please specify exactly, in clear words, what is correct. An ideal reply would state the sensor policy at all alert levels in full. I am asking because someone recently used my behaviour regarding sensor policy as a mark against me in an application thread, and accused me of not knowing procedure properly. So i wish to: 1. Either ensure that i do know it properly, or correct my beliefs if i don't. 2. Have an authoritative judgement to link people to when they question this regulation

Doing anything based on exclamation marks is arbitrary and problematic. You're not going to find a quantity or arrangement of them that makes everyone happy. IT will cause some people to shout when they only meant to emphasize emotion, and it will cause some people to not shout when they wanted to. Here's a better idea, give the player direct and explicit control over when they want to shout; http://forums.aurorastation.org/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=6027

Something from Second Life, where it worked exceptionally well. If you hit enter after typing something, regardless of the content of the text, it should use normal speech verbs (X says, or possibly exclaims) Nanako Magojiro says, "This guy looks kinda suspicious.." If you hold SHIFT and then press enter, it should instead shout. This can be done with yells/shouts as the speech verb, plus bolding the text. For extra noticeability, we could also have it use a larger font size, and be able to be heard through walls, and by people a farther distance away than the usual on-screen range. Maybe double the typical range. Nanako Magojiro shouts, "Help! this guy is trying to murder meee...." This is a far more flexible and user-controlled way of shouting, without depending on the exact contents of what you type. It gives the player more control to make their character act the way they intended. This implementation would also work with emotes, too. Such as Nanako Magojiro screams Ideally, this would be implemented in addition to this idea: http://forums.aurorastation.org/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=6003

No, definitely not, this is even worse in the opposite direction. It's a good idea to have some way to say things in bold, but not with the exclamation mark. We don't use the exclamation mark to shout

Hah, maybe that's why i'm unpopular, Where's the middle ground here? A player has no control over which of the speech verbs is randomly selected. If they had an ingame means or option to do so, that'd be a reasonable middle ground, but also more work Do you see what you did there? You just bolded something to emphasise it. That's a tool we don't have access to ingame. Nor do we have underlining, or italics. Why didn't you use an exclamation mark? (no editing it now) Because an exclamation mark goes at the end of a sentance, it wouldn't be correct to use it there. How else are you going to emphasise a word? Typing that word in allcaps seems to be a good indicator There's a big difference between writing generally, and writing which is ICly meant to emulate speech. Our characters are talking to each other, not writing novels or forum posts. The communication isn't actually writing as far as our characters are concerned Allcaps uses bigger letters that take up more space. They're more 'in the face' of the reader, and hence they communicate a similar emotional effect as shouting at them. Has several meanings, i'm not sure what this evidences. The one implying speaking with strong emotion is how i use the word Of course it looks awful. It SHOULD look awful, because shouting at people is a terribly impolite and taboo thing to do. But it gets attention, which is what you want when something is currently eating your face off. If people use methods that don't look awful and annoy people, then they're far less likely to be noticed I disagree. In many times, like when you're dying and time is critical, you often don't bother with punctuation. Punctuation is used to add flair and RP to noncritical situations I never actually intended for any new parser functionality to be added. I can think of a much simpler way to do it. If you just hit enter, your character would use normal verbs. If you hold shift while pressing enter, your character would use shout/yell verbs, and possibly have the text appear in bold font too. That is a seperate idea though.

I had no idea this was memory. ICly i thought it was a part of your PDA with an odd interface. I suppose it would make sense to wipe it It's not a big deal, but it's not pointless either. This suggestion makes sense, and i see no reason why not

Why not, exactly? It's a perfectly valid linguistic tool, which everyone understands as shouting. It's been an internet convention that allcaps = shouting, almost since the internet was invented. It's extremely unlikely that you'll be able to convince people to stop doing it unless you start banning for it Fine for what? If you want exclamation mark to mean shouting, then you'd need to remove exclaims from the verbs. Right now it straddles two functions uselessly and is just an annoyance. I contend that its present state is not fine for either purpose
