[Accepted]Here we go again: UglyXeno's Tajaran whitelist application

Recommended Posts

BYOND Key:

UglyXeno

Character Names:

Amy Wright, Essh Kesan

Species you are applying to play:

Tajaran

What color do you plan on making your first alien character (Dionaea & IPCs exempt):

Off-white (eggshell? silver? thereabouts?)

Have you read our lore section's page on this species?:

Yes.

Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph format. One paragraph minimum per question

Why do you wish to play this specific race:

I was mostly drawn to tajara by the political situation on their homeworld. I tend to study left-wing politics and philosophy as a hobby, so the space soviets are an obvious choice for me. Aside from that, the idea of space cat people is kind of my jam. I grew up playing Traveler, which has a space-cat-people species as one of its major players, and Aurora's tajara seems to be a pretty compelling implementation of the trope.

Identify what makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a Human:

Well, aside from being a cold-adapted, fur-covered species from an icy planet, tajara also come from a far less sophisticated technological environment. Wiki implies they were tooling around with their industrial age when first contact occured, so a certain level of mystification of advanced technology could be assumed (How does it work? It just does and thank god for that).

Also, their history as a fairly repressive species slots in nicely to a few of the character concepts I had.

Character Name:

Asmar Rikov

Please provide a short backstory for this character, approximately 2 paragraphs

Asmar was born in 2429 to a pair of M'sai revolutionary collaborators whose families were previously known for generations of loyal service to the nobility - whichever nobleman happened to be the most popular that week. Asmar witnessed most of the first revolution from his mother's arms, being carried from building to bombed out building.

As a young man of about seventeen, he entered law enforcement service in his home town of Naltor, but also found himself drawn to the underworld - curiosity brought him to illegal nightclubs, secret hangouts, drug dens - and his secret infatuation with other men led him to start partaking, himself.

Around the time of the second revolution, at twenty-two, he had been promoted into the local secret police's vice unit as an informant and occasional interrogator, having made a name as a quiet workaholic who was particularly good at rooting out vice criminals (although, perhaps unknown to his colleagues, mostly former flings gone sour). He was very outspoken in his support of the Hadii government, as it was politically expedient to be so.

He'd spent the majority of his remaining time in the PRA consulting for rural police units who were unwilling or unable to deal with organized vice within their jurisdictions. Unfortunately, one night, having been back in Naltor a few weeks after his thirty-first birthday, Asmar was caught in a raid on one of the secret establishments he'd chosen as his favorites, and in the process of escaping arrest, killed a fellow secret policeman. The very next night, he used all his social and literal capital to leave the planet, hoping that, if his crimes were discovered, he would be far away from punishment.

Now in space, and having made his way to Tau Ceti (mostly for the opportunity, but also because they seem to take anyone), he used his credentials as a former detective to secure a position in nanotrasen's internal security.

He also sought forgiveness for his many crimes in religion, and began attending services at a Srandmarr temple in the Imperial Plaza distrct in Mendell once a week, as well as volunteering at a local soup kitchen.

He hoped to make up for all his indulgences and all the harm he'd done by serving others for a change, rather than keeping to his old habits of enabling his own depravity.

What do you like about this character?

The idea of a vice officer who, in the course of partaking in all of his illegal desires, secures his position by informing on, arresting, and interrogating supposed friends, and the guilt associated with that, not just guilt at harming mostly-innocent people, but also guilt from allowing himself to be vulnerable to these things in the first place.

How would you rate your role-playing ability?

5/10

EDIT:

7/10

Essh is a very good character, and your roleplay abilities are great. You've proven in a short time that you're more than capable with upholding whitelist standards and have a good grasp on lore.

I very much like Asmar, as well. A short and to the point backstory that paints a realized character and understanding of the main themes of Tajaran politics. His desires are deviant, his political affiliation is present, and the fact that he used his power for his own personal agenda is... really excellent. And now he wants to make up for his misdeeds and (presumably also) his deviant lifestyle and depraved indulgences? Awesome. This is a character who would be interesting to speak with, and really I would like to see develop.

If I have any concerns with you, it's that Essh seems to be job-hopping. A lot. I'd really like to see you pick one or two and stick with it. But otherwise, I think you're a great RPer and person, and it's a solid app. +1 from me.

Agreeing with Doxx, Essh is an amazing officer who I love to interact with as Karak, and as others, including our two interactions while I was The Dragon. The jobhopping seems a bit much, but its not the biggest problem and just sticking with Officer, Miner, or Chef would solve it. I had a problem of Jobhopping before pretty much making a set character for most jobs. Also spent some time talking to Amy Wright, shes good too.

If anything, the app seems a bit short, but you do show an understanding in what is there. +1 from me, from your interactions as Essh, even if there are other people who are better than yourself, your RP is easily a 7-8/10.

It's all right. I don't really have much in-depth criticism to give, it showcases a good understanding of tajara lore and Asmar shows appropriate shame and understanding about the dangers of his vices. A key thing to keep in mind over the course of roleplay on the station is remember to be reclusive and possibly even dishonest about his predilections, being sure to only tell very close friends in private. You have a lot of positive feedback in your application too, and almost entirely from people with tajara whitelists too. I think you'll make a good addition to our tajara population on the server. Application accepted.

EDIT: Also, consider Asmar's exit strategy from secret policeman to expat. Did he resign his post and leave? Did he go on vacation and not come back? How did he go about that?
