Capt. Chloroform Posted December 4, 2018 Posted December 4, 2018 (edited) "Papers, please... What is your business on NSS Aurora? One moment." "Ah, my records show you're from the Empire of Dominia? Please submit to a random search." "NEXT!" Returning player here! First post here also. So as a Cadet of the illustrious NanoTrasen Risk Control & Security Department, it is my duty to further NT's decline into the bureaucratic, Orwellian nightmare we all know and love! A favourite pass-time of mine is to have a soft lock-down of the Arrivals/Departure Security Checkpoint and process the shift's newcomers in an 'orderly' fashion. Inconvenience is a Cadet's most potent (read: only) weapon against potential criminal scum and makes for pretty interactive RP! Scanning staff ID's and bringing up embarrassing details on their records such as being 'unemployed', yet-to-be expunged past crimes, misgendered ID's or a personal favourite… Staff unaware that their ID photos are nude. The whole 'I'll be watching you' schtick, blatantly giving preferential yet plausibly deniable treatment to Humans from the Sol Alliance, it's a lot of fun. It also works for when shit has hit the fan and Security needs to clear Staff before departing on the Shuttle during a Code Blue/Red! But there's a fine line between shitcurity and a creating a genuinely despotic atmosphere; because as I see it, past the bullshit NanoTrasen PR the staff are flesh-Borgs with paychecks instead of charging stations. Inspired massively by the game Papers, Please! I am suggesting that a button identical to the ringers you see at department reception desks be implemented, and when clicked on, broadcasts 'NEXT!' like the megaphone. Rather than have the squealing megaphone noise, replace the sound file with the one linked below (from Papers, Please!) Would love to see this implemented. Truthfully, some of the ambient sounds work too locally around the checkpoint area! Like the camera effect and having a measuring stick on the wall facing the checkpoint desk? Having the paperwork stamp for temporary work permits etc. It can evolve in many ways. Well, that's it from me. Let me know what you folks think! Edited December 4, 2018 by Capt. Chloroform
DeadLantern Posted December 4, 2018 Posted December 4, 2018 I don't really get the whole intro, but the idea is nice. I don't see a problem with it. I don't want to get up the checkpoint to be like a border control thing, like with the measuring stick and the photo stuff. Just the "Next" is fine. I wouldn't be too averse to adding a megaphone in the checkpoint, too.
ben10083 Posted December 4, 2018 Posted December 4, 2018 Please be more clear next time for others, In case people don't understand, he wants there to be a button in arrivals checkpoint which acts as a megaphone and says next, with the megaphone sound for it being replaced with the papers please sound. I love it. +1
Capt. Chloroform Posted December 4, 2018 Author Posted December 4, 2018 Ah maybe my reference is too dependent on people who've actually played Papers, Please! SS13 has really evolved to include many great games from our time in one reference or another. I think the 'Next!' would be in good taste
wowzewow Posted December 4, 2018 Posted December 4, 2018 I love bureaucracy. Painful, tedious and under the feet of a authoritarian regime? Sign me up! +1
VTCobaltblood Posted December 4, 2018 Posted December 4, 2018 Why is this not done on the Odin? Occupying IAAs with this would be a great way to justify IAAs having two slots, though. Granted that IAAs are a whitelisted role, this could be a great way to immediately make new players feel the lore. I'd love to have more paperwork, anyways so more people can see bretscher's signature because it's the best signature. If a justification is provided for why this is done on Aurora and not Odin, a +1 from me. What a shame that I can't roleplay getting knives in random places confiscated every round because customs are on Odin not Aurora
Asheram Posted December 4, 2018 Posted December 4, 2018 +1 The arrivals/departures gate is woefully underutilized when it comes to RP. It should be given all the love.

I totally agree, and I also agree that the checkpoint should not be pointless border security, it wouldn't hurt to make it capable of BEING that for minievents and the like.
