[+1 DISMISSAL] Increasing round duration to 3 or 4 hours.

It's probably an idea that have been suggested in the past, but I don't seem to find trace of it with search or recent post talking about it.

I've been playing here for about a year now and this is something I often tough about. The current two hours round seem short on many aspect and it often gives me the impression things are cut down when they start to get interesting. I can give for a few examples:

  • You just got a new nice new KA from science as a miner, but you know it's useless because you are 1h30+ in the round and nobody really care about mineral anymore.
  • You finish a huge renovation as an engineer of a place for people to enjoy and do some RP, but there is 20 minutes left into the round.
  • You were able to set an expedition in place after all the paperwork struggle, the preparation and getting people to have a minimum of coordination to see yourself not being able to finish it be the round end.
  • You try to set a gimmick in place as an antag without being too obvious and getting robusted too fast, only to see yourself rushed by the round timer and decide to just blow everything up instead.

etc.

Aurora is selling itself as a HRP server, so longer rounds would only give more opportunities to the people to do some RP on all modes (it's frequent to have secrets that feel like an extended for some people). It will also give some space to people to create things and involve themselves into activities they would normally have not done by a lack of time.

It could also be a possibility to had a vote with secret results in the middle of the game to ask people if they want to continue like that or to add antags. (Secret result par would be to avoid meta) So if the majority of people found the round too tame, there is an opportunity to spice it up.

Finally, if things are going bad, we still have the emergency shuttle or the Nuke to end the round early.

 

I don't know if that would be a popular idea, but I had to give it a try.

The two hour mark foils my gimmick EVERY TIME as a vampire bc my escalation takes too long. But the thing is, that might just be MY fault, though I do feel very rushed with my gimmicks to do something stupid and dangerous so I dont get kekked by transfer. I would say up to 2 and a half hours. 3 seems a bit long.

The longer a round goes, the more of a mess it tends to be. Unless Extended were more common I'd be against this seeing as a lot of modes are already 'Antag causes huge mess that makes everything vaguely unpleasant for the rest of the round, Command too afraid to call emergency shuttle, people left to deal with a fucked-up station and a fifth of the crew dead and unable to play for 2-3 more hours'.

These threads pop up every year. If people wanted 4 hour rounds they'd vote continue, but they usually vote to extend.

I would be fine with 4 minimum hour rounds if the antags were actually good, but they're not. A 2 hour minimum round is fine.

Voting for dismissal.

Two hour minimum rounds are the perfect spot and three hour rounds would get stale after a while, in addition to getting less players overall during timezone switch times. We can also see that most rounds have the transfer shuttle voted at 2 hours in.

God no. Two and a half hours is the maximum amount of time I'd want as the MINIMUM. People don't like three hour rounds- there's a reason most Continue Votes never hit them and if they do, you bet there's gonna be a transfer vote after unless it's deadhour and people are joking around.

 

3-4 hour rounds also fucks with bulk-rounds/binging. The current two-hour formula means if that if we get the CT exactly at 2:00, we'll be back at the lobby for a new round by 2:16 round-time. If you do three or four rounds, people will only be able to get really just one game before they have to go- that round could suck ass for them and fuck with them.

 

Also, while three-aurora rounds is only six hours wasted (about a fourth of the day). Three rounds that follow this new format (or bay's since they have 3 hour rounds), it's nine hours wasted. Even just two rounds could be their entire evening. I dislike the very idea of this, and it'd probably result in much harsher deadpop/who-list drops.
