Virologists need their own access

If there isn't a Chief Medical Officer aboard the virologist can't open virus sample crates, and this is really a bummer. They just need their own access even if they're an alt title of the medical doctor, this will help them actually continue their research without having to wait all round for the CMO or another head of staff.

simpler answer: Give doctors access to the sample crates.

anyone with medical training should know enough not to screw around with them, no need to code access specific to an alt title. This implemnentation would be more useful too, since many doctors do virology as a secondary thing when they're not needed for patients.

We already have alt access for alt titles anyway. I feel it'd be better if it is just Virologists and CMO who have access.

This was exactly my thought as well. I'm just waiting for more input before actually making the PR on github for it.

I get the feeling the access, like only Warden+HoS and above having gun crate access is more of an "minimal access minimal griff" thing but at the same time I would also assume people can trust the average Medical player here not to infect the crew with GBS. So no reason not to give the access, really.

No I don't think medical doctors should get access to the crates, only Virologist + CMO. Sorry I should have made that more clear.

Erm, where? Because as far as I'm aware, we don't. My lack of knowledge about this actually made coding something half a year ago into a pain. (Namely, there's no mechanic with which to pull it off, outside of switches.)

Mind if I make a pull request for it Skull? If it looks good you can go from there?

Xenologists straight off the top of my drunken head. A scientist cannot access xenology.

Xenobiologist and Scientist are different jobs.

Fair, if that's the case then virologist should be separate to medical doctor because it very much is. A good comparison is xenology to scientist.

Right, should I just separate the jobs completely or work in Doctors no longer getting virology access and only CMO + virologists do.

Which ever is easiest for you. Both have the same result I assume?

Don't do either of these please

Give Medical Doctors access to open the crates, done. Simplest solution, upsets least people.

Doctors having access to virology is important. Because as mentioned, many doctors do it alternatively, it's a niche role and not often filled by a specialist.

Virology is also a very common place for carp to attack, and it's really rather important that doctors have access there so we can let engineers and security in.

Why even have the role then if players playing Medical Doctors just know virology and do it anyway?

You can make the exact same argument about surgery. not all doctors know surgery, but they still have access.

Why?

Because what a person can do is decided by their character's skills, not the job they've chosen. Characters can hold multiple degrees if they're old enough, and be skilled in multiple fields. Especially skrell. And IPCs

Not all doctors will be skilled in virology, but some definitely will be. Those that don't have the skills will stay out, they generally do anyway, i've never observed any problem with tons of inexperienced noobs crowding into virology. I don't think there's any problem here that needs to be solved except crate access.

If people are abusing extra access too much, admins can step in, and they will, they already do. I got bwoinked about doing surgery and chemistry as a nurse, and stopped when admins made it clear about what IC skills are reasonable (I resumed surgery after promoting to doctor a couple weeks later, with specific admin approval)

Let RP decide the restriction, not mechanics. Admins will deal with abuse.

Giving medical doctors access to open the virus crates is sufficient, it will change nothing in terms of balance (doctors can already take virus samples from virology) but it will be a quality of life improvement for virologists. Everyone wins, no farther-reaching changes are needed.

Id really like it if as little people as possible had the chance to open the easily lethal, abusable virus crates, but being CMO only is a bit much. I still think Virologists should have their job and access, but that idea was shot down WAY long ago. But having two people able to open the crate, the CMO and one virologist, would work. It already happens with weapons crate, which someone already mentioned, where only the HoS and Warden can open them, and the virology lab looks like was made for only one person to man anyway,

That's refreshingly self aware. My main concern was the old "I'M A NURSE NOW BUT TRAINED IN ALL FIELDS!!!111" which is a pet peeve of mine. Such things should only really apply to a skrell/Diona imo since that's their species/race benefit. No Human/Unathi/Tarj paramedic/doctor/chemist/virologists pls, it's lame. BUT I DIGRESS.

I agree with you Nanako you diamond. Make the crates all access.

Posted

Yeah I closed the PR last night because Nanako wanted me to wait for more input but still at this point I'm seeing more people on the side of medical doctors should /not/ get access to the virus crates only CMO + virologists should.

Edit: I would also like to point out in my pull request the changes made were; I removed geneticist from the preferences menu, none can spawn in anyways. Made Virologists it's own job in medical, removing the access from doctors, and then adding virology_access to the sample crates.

A virus sample crate spawns in virology at roundstart, unlocked. Every doctor already has access to viruses

And virus sample crates are really just a convenience, you can make any virus by mutating the starting ones plus a bit of luck, i believe.

Giving doctors access to them wouldn't change balance at all

Try counting again, Zundy has reconsidered his position.

On the side of keep doctor access, myself, zundy and carver. On the side of restrict to virologist, yourself and jboy. it's 3:2 in favour of allowing the access

I'd say medical is already sufficiently split up between chemists, paramedics, and doctors. it doesn't need anymore cutting. Virology is a medical specialty, not an isolated career, you've got to be a doctor to begin with to understand how viruses affect the body.

Yes but how is a doctor not getting chemistry access any different then a doctor not getting virology access? I see virology as a much more complex and knowledgeable job then Chemistry. That's just my opinion though.

Well, both chemistry and virology (and also surgery) aren't easy stuff. Just because it's really simplified in-game to the point of few clicks, it doesn't mean it's easy-peasy job for every twenty-year old doctor to do.

I'm for virologists (+CMO) having access to virology and sample crates. I wish people would start playing specialized characters, with surgeons, virologists, chemists, and just general practitioners each having their own places, cooperating like a department they should be. Instead of the randomness I'm usually seeing in the medbay, with people doing whatever they lay their hands on, without communication and stuff.

Sorry I'm a little daft but are you on my side about separating virologists into its own job and removing virology access from doctors? Or keeping doctors with virology access and just making the crates have virology access.

It's okay, I'm not the greatest egnrish-person either. The first one, ya.
