BYOND key: Resilynn

Character names: Lily Fiefer, Melody Nash, George Schmidt, Fernando Gonzales, Ellie Shoshana

How long have you been playing on Aurora?: A little over a year now.

Why do you wish to be on the whitelist?: I play regularly in various roles. I have experimented in most departments and know what I enjoy best, but I'd like to become more involved with a more important job.

Why did you come to Aurora?: BRAINOS told me about SS13 and it sounded neat. When I did a bit of reading on the various servers, Aurora consistently came up as the best RP server. I enjoy the RP, and even though some of my characters (like Schmidty) are less serious than others, I love interacting with other characters, making friends, and basically, feeling like some part of me is living life in space.

Have you read the Aurora wiki on the head roles and qualifications you plan on playing?: Of course.

Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph each.

Give a definition of what you think roleplay is, and should be about: Roleplay is largely about catharsis: living a life you can't live yourself. But roleplay is also about fun. It's about characters and situations, solving challenges together, overcoming adversary, and getting (in my experience) a ton of great stories out of it.

What do you think the OOC purpose of a Head of Staff is, ingame?: OOC, Heads of Staff are pillars of consistency in the game. They are generally experienced roleplayers who keep the high RP culture of the game going. They are expected not only to keep the station running, but also to serve as models for incoming players for what RPing looks like. They don't pull barely in-character wacky shenanigans, and their responses to situations make sense. They also, in a sense, train new players. I'd expect a HoS to in game show a new employee how to do their job, but a good HoS should probably also LOOC and go over game mechanics if someone seems to be having trouble.

What do you think the OOC responsibilities of Whitelisted players are to other players, and how would you strive to uphold them?: Like I just explained, whitelisted characters teach, support, and set an example for other players. I think they also assist the moderators in reporting incidents.

Please pick one of your characters for this section, and provide well articulated responses to the following questions.

Character name: Ellie Shoshanna

Character age: 42

Please provide a short biography of this character (approx 2 paragraphs): Ellie Shoshanna comes from a reasonably affluent family on Earth. She began college young, at 17. Her BA is in biology, her Ph D. is in Archaeobotany. She excelled in school and managed to get her Ph D by the time she was 25. She initially worked in the field, but found that the long hours, remote locations, and dangerous conditions made her feel too exhausted, so she began a professorship once she turned 30. As a professor, she was in charge of leading field studies: taking students to different locations and teaching them how to take and document samples. She was in charge of a fairly large research project, so she got experience in hiring, allocating different jobs, managing grants and resources, etc. She married a professor of literature at the age of 32, and for a few years was very happy. Her research became mostly a desk job, managing students and postdocs.

She divorced two years ago after finding about her husband's affair. She decided that she needed a change of scenery, so applied to Nanotrasen. She's interested in working on the new Aurora as HoP. It'll be different than her previous focus on research, but the Aurora is still a research station, and she's definitely gained the experience to do this. She is nervous about the move, but she is generally a very optimistic person, so she's hoping for the best.

What do you like about this character?: Ellie is nice! She trusts and believes the best in people. She can border on naive, but she is very intelligent and also very by the books. She is by far the most vulnerable of my characters: she's more expressive and more personable than the others.

What do you dislike about this character?: Pretty much the same stuff. She has so far been a bit too trusting and forgiving. Security once tackled her (when she was working as a xenoarchaeologist) for brining a harmless relic onto the main station. She was tased, and as she describes it: they can get pretty stressed sometimes. Her kindness and vulnerability can hinder her. I could never see her carrying a weapon, and she will always be the very last person to think violence is the right solution to a problem. I'm sure this will get her killed on this station.

What do you think makes this character fit to be a head of staff?: She's intelligent, she's personable, she's very by the books, and she has a decent amount of experience in research management and human resources. She thinks before she reacts, and she's very attuned to the needs of the people around her.

Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions.

How would you rate your own roleplaying?: 7/10. I'm getting there. I've definitely gotten better over the last year. This is my first real online roleplaying experience. I'm an avid tabletop RPG player, but RPing over text is waaaay different. So I'm still learning. But I think I try to always keep my characters' motivations and speech patterns in mind, and I'm finally getting the hang of emoting.

Extra notes: I know some of my characters, like Schmidty, are kind of silly and not very realistic. I mean, I still try to roleplay the character and he hasn't done anything SUPER stupid and unrealistic. I am not planning on playing this character like that. I'm planning on playing her like I have played her so far, like I play Lily Fiefer, Melody Nash, and Fernando: reasonable people doing their jobs in a reasonable way.

Also, it should be noted that my roommates also play, and we occasionally have people come over and play with us, all on the same wifi so all at the same IP address. So there are more warnings on my account than I've actually gotten myself. The one on 2017-05-31 12:07:27 was not me. I think that's my only active one.

Until recently, I've only roleplayed with Resilynn in a few fleeting interactions since our characters don't often run into each other. Buuuut after a few rounds - especially a few outstandingly well done antag rounds starring them, I feel very confident that they not only have a good grip on game mechanics, but on roleplay, as well, and has a very clear understanding of how to run departments well. Hearing some of Fernando's logic honestly makes me wish they were CMO more often than not and after working for them while they were quartermaster, I feel like leadership is a thing they're fit for.

I +1 to this application.

I believe had a very poor interaction with Ellie, and a lot of Cargo Staff last night as the Head of Personnel. At first, I thought Ellie may have been a good voice of reason, as she told me the other Cargo staff were being dumb... Then she stole an industrial mining rig and hopped into space, after messing up the Mining Outpost with a fellow Cargo Tech. I don't believe she was antag (please correct me if you were) , and I want you to understand that kind of conduct as a non-antag is a very slippery slope, and exactly the stuff you'll be squashing as a Head of Staff

If you were not the Cargo Tech Ellie last night, I apologize and I'll delete this ;P

Nope, that was me. We were stuck there, no one had responded on the radio for awhile and Fisherson had injured himself pretty badly, so I went to get help. You guys managed to come get him right as I got back to the station.

But I agree we probably could have waited.

I've thought about it, and decided I wouldn't like to be trapped for so long either (I had never seen you calling over comms, but was dealing with command and security things with the Captain and was distracted) and since you did take steps to alert me about previous cargo issues, I think you're rather attuned to regulation.

I'll give you my +1, try to play Quartermaster if you can - it'll be good to get leadership experience before you Head :)

As Ellie Shoshana, Resilynn has demonstrated excellent people-skills and knowledge of protocol. In general, I have seen Ellie follow regulation very closely, but, as demonstrated in the example Azande gave, Ellie is willing to go out of her way to help the crew (I am Fisherson, btw), at great risk to herself. She's a Lawful Good sort of person, and I think that's a great thing for a Head of Staff. +1 from me. :)

Edit: Also, during a meteor round today, Ellie saved a lot of materials + four other crew with an escape pod.

I've seen and played alongside Resilynn in numerous rounds, including as both an antag and Quartermaster, and on all occasions they seemed to be an adept roleplayer and competent member of the station. From what I've seen of their actions as a quartermaster, they seem to have a plenty of knowledge as to managing a department and ensuring that it functions smoothly, and would make a good head of staff.

It's not often that security likes cargo so much that they make an entire cake baking operation around thanking them for the help. Ellie Shoshana was a major factor for why that happened. Seems to know what they are doing.

I've played with three of Resilynn's characters, and they both seemed well grounded and believable (though Schmidt is a bit of a goofball). The first time, Fernando Gonzales was a vampire and had sort of assumed the leader position for the vampires. I negotiated with him and our two 'factions' made peace, the round went on as normal. Medical vampires hosted blood drives, and everything was well.

I've worked with Ellie about twice so far. She is a pretty good QM. It seems like cargo usually has everything in order when she's at the helm. Both rounds I've worked with her, she seemed very competent. She checked up on us frequently and gave us helpful advice, like sorting the warehouse stuff into one closet for each department but giving them each goodies like med-kits etc. All around a decent player and role-player.

I have only had the chance to interact with one of Resilynn's character's that being Ellie Shoshanna. She was a generous QM that paid some special attention to my department, so we launched Operation Sprinkles where we covertly obtained a cake to surprise her with. All around memorable and pleasant exchange, I think it was even in a hall of fame post. Long story short I thoroughly enjoyed my contact with Shoshanna, and am happy to see that character around. I think they understand the game and roleplay well enough to play command staff.

I've had experiences with this character. I have tested this character's moral compass and patience on numerous accounts. They seem to value emotional thought processing, over a "by the book" thought process. They aren't afraid to report crimes and issues to security, even if they are trying to befriend or impress the offender on average rounds, icly. I don't know how the character would act under a loyality implant, because I have witnessed them obtain a QM's id card, and refuse to return it to the owner, prompting them to be arrested by security, even after they asked her multiple times to return it.

I believe that from a gameplay point of view, she would do great as a Head of Personnel/Crewmember Resources Manager. She is human, imperfect, and unbiased in her approach to situations that threaten crewmembers. I'm not sure how good she would do at actually managing employees and considering self preservation, but the point of this game is to have fun. I believe she would be able to maintain a command position that may require her to be strick, yet still find a way to be personable with people involved.

Personal verdict: +1

tl;dr: I'd like to see her become a "HOP" and try to manage the crew. She'd make it fun. +1

I've seen Resilynn's characters George Schmidt and Ellie Shoshanna around, and I've gotta say I do enjoy what I've seen so far. Ellie Shoshanna recently hosted a talent show for the crew, in an attempt to OOCly as well as ICly entertain everyone, and that ended up being a round a lot of people wanted to stay for and wanted to see play out, until the talent show ended that is.

My major interaction with Resilynn was as George Schmidt however, while I was playing as Alaina Winters as Bartender. George Schmidt and companion Howard Rich both came in, and near that time the power went out, so I could serve neither of them drinks. Howard Rich went on to insult me, and I was just about ready to pull out the shotgun when they decided to leave. Nonetheless, I found the duo very entertaining OOC and saw Schmidt as very dutiful and willing to please Rich. The roleplay was done very well and honestly wouldn't mind another chance encounter, even if it ends up with Schmidt and Rich on the end of the shotgun again.

Other than that I've heard absolutely nothing bad about Resilynn, and being a friend of and being recommended this game by BRAINOS gives another plus to me. Definite +1 here, very much want to see where Resilynn's characters go in the future.

While the times I have roleplayed with Ellie have been numbered, the interactions have been fantastic. They display a great understanding of roleplay and hold all of the qualities I would think make someone a good fit for head whitelist. +1
