ben10083
BYOND key: ben10083 Character names: Bob Jones - Quartermaster Ben Smith - Warden B.O.B/B.O.B 2.0 - AI/Cyborg How long have you been playing on Aurora?: I have been playing since August 2017. Why do you wish to be on the whitelist?: I am roleplaying a character that went from a good job as a Roboticist to a lowly Cargo Technician, the character climbed up to Quartermaster and wishes to become a Head of Personnel Why did you come to Aurora?: To play a high-rp server that actually allows you to get stuff done and do things other servers don't have the time to do. Have you read the Aurora wiki on the head roles and qualifications you plan on playing?: I have, and I am anxious to see how I will fare as a HoP and how fast I can master the art of paperwork. Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph each. Give a definition of what you think roleplay is, and should be about: Roleplaying, in a game or in real life, is a way to express yourself in different ways, you could be a ruthless capitalist that only strives for that extra credit instead of their fellow man, or you can be a man of facts that doesn't let things like "feelings" get in their pursuit of knowledge. Roleplay should be a chance for people to try new things and act differently, they can act mean or nice, smart or dumb, and many more things. Its impossible to find two characters that are alike in everyway, as everyone has different ways of expressing themselves, and that is how it should be. What do you think the OOC purpose of a Head of Staff is, ingame?: A Head of Staff is someone who helps model a round, their actions can take someone out of round, or make it horrible, it can also allow people to try new things, like being a interim HoS and finding out firsthand what it is like to be a command member, although temporary. A Head of Staff also helps people get into the game, by giving orders and insight to what you should be doing as a certain job. The Heads of Staff are also able to answer questions newcomers have and help them do their job right. What do you think the OOC responsibilities of Whitelisted players are to other players, and how would you strive to uphold them?: A Whitelisted player is someone who the community thinks is ready to become on of the most powerful people in the round short of some antags. They are excellent at helping people learn how to play, and I hope to be someone that people know they can learn how to play from, I also intend to give them links to wiki pages that can make their jobs MUCH easier. The players are also responsible for making sure they don't ruin the fun of other players if they can, and should avoid meta/power gaming. Please pick one of your characters for this section, and provide well articulated responses to the following questions. Character name: Bob Jones Character age: 76 Please provide a short biography of this character (approx 2 paragraphs): Bob Jones was born into a wealthy family, with his father being a expert Roboticist and coming from a long line of Roboticist. His family guided him on the path of being a Roboticist and Bob Jones eventually went to Mar's University to get a degree in Robotics. When he graduated, his father used his connections to get him a job at the HRS Lemnos as a Roboticist. It was everything Bob DREAMED of.....at least he thought so. His job was simply cyborg maintenance, with the occasional lobotomy to make more cyborgs. He quickly become bored and depressed about how his whole life led to this, and daydreamed constantly, which led to a accident while preforming a lobotomy. He was careless and forgot to ensure anesthetic tank was full when it was nearly empty, the tank ran out and the patient panic seeing Bob about to severe his brain stem. The patient started resisting causing Bob's scalpel to puncture multiple times in the patient's brain. By the time security and medical arrived the patient was unconscious and heavily bleeding. Bob Jones was arrested and his father used a decent portion of his funds to hire a excellent lawyer that managed to reduce Bob's charges to Neglect of Duty with the punishment being Bob being fired and given a hefty fine. Bob's Father payed for the fine and soon after went into retirement due to old age, and Bob went off to try to find a new job. Bob soon found out that no one will hire a Roboticist after seeing his criminal record and he had to settle for a job at the NSS Antlia as a Cargo Technician. Bob soon fell into a depression and barely did any work until one day he met a Quartermaster that changed his life forever. It was a person of high class that whipped Bob and the others into shape and quickly made cargo a cash making machine. Bob was amazed by the QM's brilliance and begged him to be his mentor, the QM agreed after hearing his story and over the course of 4 years taught Bob everything he knew. The QM directed Bob to a college that he can attend to get a degree that will allow him to become a QM, and before the QM retired he gave Bob his spare cane as a memento. Bob quickly attended and graduated at The Nal'tor College of Career Excellence with a associates degree in economics. Bob was able to then get a job on the NSS Aurora as a Quartermaster. Bob, like his mentor, started making cargo work efficiently and quickly started adding a steady stream of income to the cargo account. Bob, although he loved his job as QM, wanted to climb the ranks and went back to The Nal'tor College of Career Excellence to get a bachelors degree in Personnel Management. Bob then applied for the position of Head of Personnel. What do you like about this character?: I love playing this character since its enjoyable to try to manage a department where funds ACTUALLY matter, and anything can go wrong. What do you dislike about this character?: He always walks with a cane since its of great personnel value to him and it can be annoying to work with only one hand open. What do you think makes this character fit to be a head of staff?: He is very good at organizing his cargo staff to make his department efficient and profitable and has the initiative to help all the other departments stay efficient. How would you rate your role-playing ability? I would say around a 6, I can roleplay but can sometimes forget to act a certain way in certain situations (Hard to think of what your character would say when they are being attacked.) Notes: Couldnt find a application format for Head of staff (or maybe I overlooked it) so if I missed any questions let me know. Edited October 23, 2017 by Guest Link to comment
Azande
Please add in the bolds that are meant to exist for the questions, so this is easier to read. As well, I can't support or refute this application as I have legitimately never seen any of your listed characters, and if I have - they were not memorable. I notice your character went to a Nal'Tor college, which I believe is on Adhomai - Why would a human attend post-secondary on an alien world where they don't speak Sol Common or Tau Ceti Common actively, and is a frozen hellhole for the most part? Thanks for letting me know, I added them in now. 2. The "Carl Smith" that was there was actually B.O.B and B.O.B 2.0, I just have them in as a separate character for convenience, so I edited the correct names in. The character that the application focuses on, Bob Jones, might not be memorable since he spends most if not all of the shift in the safety of Cargo. 3. The college has a human headmaster so Bob Jones can realistically learn there, and it provides the education he desires. Also there is likely translators or something for people who speak Sol Common or Tau Ceti Common since Nanotrasen hires most of the graduates. Link to comment
Conspiir
I don't know how to feel. Mostly confused. I've met Jones a few times in passing and I've had extensive interaction with B.O.B. and the 2.0. They seemed "okay." I've not worked directly under Jones, so I don't know how he would act in a position of authority. If other people have positive experiences, feel free to listen to them over me, but I'm considering a strong "Not enough information" stance. Link to comment
AmoryBlaine
Aside from his get-up as Quartermaster I got zero problems with him. Great at QM, Warden. Really worthy of Head whitelist, very dedicated to running their department efficiently and being a great Warden. +1 EDIT: He made a very dumb contract dealing with PunPun and I find it to be unbecoming of someone who wants to move up to a Heavy Roleplay centered whitelist. While the contract may have been approved, it's still very lowly for an HRP server in my opinion and I see at as a reason enough for me to change my +1 to nothing. So I'm neutral now. Link to comment
MattAtlas
Your warden play isn't exactly great. Sometimes you look like you don't have a very clear grasp of regulations, from what I've seen of your arrest, whenever you play warden which I actually don't see you play too much, even as quartermaster. About your quartermaster, I feel like your warden is a carbon copy. There isn't any concrete difference I can spot in your two characters, they seem to talk the same way and I'm not sure about the backstories. As for your general OOC conduct, I don't have much to say. You do neglect grammar IC, neglecting to add punctuation or even capitalization when you bold things that you're saying - which you do a bit too often, in my opinion. Overall, I'm going to go with neutral. Leaning towards -1 in all honesty. I don't think you're fit yet. Link to comment
ajstorey456
I've played alongside Ben a few times. He somehow manages to be a superior to me in a majority of rounds I see him, my characters typically being cyborgs under BOB 2.0 or a Shaft Miner under Bob Jones. I'd like to preface this response with the fact that I have nothing against Ben or how he is at all, but this is my honest opinion. I think you need more time to learn how to roleplay. Whenever I'm Cherish, the Cyborg, your BOB 2.0 personality makes me wince a little, and brace for the round that is to come. As an AI, you tend to come off as monotonic, command barking, and a little less than knowledgeable or receptive to interaction. Whenever I'm Jericho Brigand, the Shaft Miner, your Bob Jones personality makes me wince a little, and brace for disobeying your orders because Jericho is a dick. As a Quartermaster, you tend to come off as monotonic, command barking, and a little less than knowledgeable or receptive to interaction. I haven't played under Ben Smith, but you get the idea. I think the fact that three of your main character's names are B.O.B., B.O.B. 2.0, and Bob Jones speaks for itself. While not necessarily a bad thing if handled right, you ought to be more creative in expanding your creative horizon. I believe I've played antagonist with you a few times, one for certain as a Head Loyalist. It was while I was still getting my chops at playing SS13, but back then, you seemed better than you are now. You had dynamic and interesting responses to events and what my character said. I can't say I see that anymore. I see Bob, the guy who barks orders and doesn't care. That's not interesting, and it applies to two of your characters that I know. The other times I don't really recall, but it feels like I get them a lot with you, even if I can never remember them. Overall, I think you're a good player in potential. You play a lot, you obviously like the game and enjoy spending your time with it, I'd just like you to work out your RP muscles some more. Beyond general statements about you as a whole, your application seems like a perfect example of what you could be with some more practice and experience. Your backstory was nice, compared to things I've seen, and the only thing I don't like about it is Bob's seemingly unprovoked want to be a HoP. His other jobs had reasons for being there and then not being there, which is cool, and I like it. For you to have that backstory of coming and going only to have Bob jump up to HoP simply for a pay raise or some other non mentioned reason just doesn't seem right. Wouldn't he love and respect his job as a QM, following in the footsteps of the man who taught him how to live in a better way? Wouldn't he feel rooted in his fitted job in cargo, making things run smoothly for everyone else, and possibly get the urge to take up a prodigy himself? And OOC, if I'm being totally honest, the last thing I want is another bossy, command barking Head of Staff that doesn't allow for much interaction. I say make a new character. Play something that isn't a powerful role, like Borg, AI, QM, or Warden. Play a doctor who cares about each and every one of his patients' well being, a Janitor that comes from somewhere rough and either takes that out on those who see themselves better than him, or lighten their day by making friends and sharing gritty jokes, like a good old fashioned janitor would, a Bartender, a Cadet, an engineer... Anything, really. It would also help to have the knowledge of how the Departments work first hand before trying to become the guy that manages them all, OOCly. But until you've tested your chops elsewhere, really grinded down your ability to roleplay and adapt to a new personality, I'm gonna have to have a negative response to this app. TL;DR, -1, but you have potential to be a +1 in the future. You're a cool guy, Ben. Don't rush it. Link to comment

Coalf
The feedback here was well done and meaningful and the application itself wasn't bad itself. But, well done criticism can also be negative and while I firmly believe nothing above was done out of malicious intent, head whitelist players are held to higher scrutiny than normal players and thus can't make the same mistakes as regular players, thus I will have to deny this application Don't get dissuaded though, work on yourself and I suggest making an application at a later date. Application denied, locking and archiving. Link to comment
