LanceLynxx
BYOND key: LanceLynxx Character names: Natascha "THE SUKH" Sukhoi / Researcher Viktor Lavochkin / Merchant Ilya Mikoyan / Miner Kimi Myasishchev / Engineering Apprentice Nikita Yakovlev / Cadet ADMINISTRATOR / AI Mikhail "Misha" Volkov/ Researcher / RD candidate How long have you been playing on Aurora?: 7 months-ish Why do you wish to be on the whitelist?: First of all, to be able to play a new role. Secondly, to help out others and promote cooperation while making the department work like a well-lubricated machine. Why did you come to Aurora?: Tried to RP in other servers. Got toolboxed and dragged to maint before I could finish my first emote. Have you read the Aurora wiki on the head roles and qualifications you plan on playing?: Yus Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph each. Give a definition of what you think roleplay is, and should be about: Becoming someone (or something) else and placing yourself in their shoes, forgetting your persona as a player; Thinking and acting according to the character's traits, motivations, drives, background, etc. Literally a controlled dissociative identity disorder. What do you think the OOC purpose of a Head of Staff is, ingame?: Teaching jobs, guiding new players, explaining things and answering questions, generally helping and assisting like a mod, but in character, as well as leading the department and trying to mantain cooperation to fulfill their roles at their best capability. Also, try to give a direction to the department, try to engage everyone and try to get everyone to enjoy the round within your best capabilities. AND GET EVERYTHING WORKING PROPERLY. What do you think the OOC responsibilities of Whitelisted players are to other players, and how would you strive to uphold them?: Basically be a role model for others, be level headed, courteous, and helpful, don't play to win, but play to RP, and be the example of change that you want to see. Please pick one of your characters for this section, and provide well articulated responses to the following questions. Character name: Mikhail "Misha" Volkov Character age: 33 Please provide a short biography of this character (approx 2 paragraphs): Misha was born in May 9th, 2427, in Harmony City, Luna, son of a wealthy merchant and a surgeon. He grew up during the boom of Bluespace Gates after 2425, and became interested with the science and technology behind the contraptions. Being an only son of a rich couple, he was pampered with all of the best available, from food to private tutoring to getaway vacations and expensive toys and gadgets. Taking this to his advantage, Misha, with innate curiosity and the funds to satisfy it, pursued a career as a scientist, going to Solis Cognito University and taking a Bachelor of Science degree in Experimental Physics, all the while becoming rather sympathetic with the ideals of ATLAS members on campus. Fresh out of college, he was snatched up by Hephaestus Industries as a researcher aboard HRS Odyssey, mostly dealing with reverse-engineering the competition's technology, rather than developing his own research. After a two year contract, he furthered his education by attending to Mars University for a Masters degree in Neural Networks, going back to HRS Odyssey for another two years, and finally returning to Solis Cognito for a PhD in Bluespace Theory, after which he was reassigned to HRS Lemnos for six years. Disgruntled with the restrictive measures surrounding research and development, general stagnation of innovation, and focus on just reverse engineering and refining existing ideas, he jumped at the oportunity to transition to NanoTrasen , having a much larger freedom to test and experiment at his discretion, with state-of-the-art equipment and less government regulation. What do you like about this character?: He's well educated, analytical, focused, and presses on for results using pragmatism, and although solitary and more at comfort with books, attempts to mantain a good relationship with his peers. I also like that, although pragmatic, he also strives for innovation, so long as it is useful and efficient. What do you dislike about this character?: Due to his upbringing, he may at times be posh, stuck up, and somewhat spoiled, becoming condescending when his colleagues fail to execute tasks efficiently or otherwise get in the way of his research. Somewhat a narcisist. His time in Solis Cognito University also made him a bit of a bigot in regards to other species, although sympathetic towards synthetics, since he sees as a human creations, therefore, a statement to humankind's genius. What do you think makes this character fit to be a head of staff?: His education background and experience make him fit to run a science department, and perhaps even advise on matters in concurrency with Engineering in regards to synthetics and AI. His drive for results is also a plus, since he would do everything in his power to assist in reaching the goals of each subdivision of Science. The analytical pragmatism would be a boon to the overall efficiency of the department, as would the will to learn more from experiments. Even though his narcisism is mostly a "bad" character flaw, it is also used as a pressure drive to present results to his superiors; Failure in giving satisfactory reports would result in bringing shame unto himself as a Director. Thus, the personal and professional goals are aligned, increasing productivity. Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions. How would you rate your own roleplaying?: I would say that I'm a solid 7/10, always striving for RP and never playing to win, trying to keep a balance between emotes and actions as well. Every so often I may "break" the atmosphere but that's usually within the spur of a moment, and those are far and in between. Butterrobber202
Sukhoi is abit of a meme and has/had serveral CCIA reports from what I remember. You constantly play them like a dehinged loose cannon from what’s I’ve seen/read. Do you plan on making them a RD? (Your AI is decent though.) Link to comment

You constantly play them like a dehinged loose cannon from what’s I’ve seen/read. Do you plan on making them a RD? (Your AI is decent though.) Had 2 CCIA. 1 from building a second experimental AI without going through the red tape 1 from making a joke and dressing up with a holo soviet uniform and holo gun found in a strange crate and then ordering robotics to share materials or else gulag at a round end. neither of which I consider a problem tbh. one was skipping bureocracy and the other one was, tbh, a bogus report. But I digress. Sukhoi isn't a loose cannon at all, I don't know where'd you get that from. He was interim once, but that's it. I'm making the app for a new char. I haven't planned anything but for now I don't intend on making sukhoi RD. Maybe in the future, I haven't decided. (Thanks for the AI. Have played it for less than a week, first time touching it) Link to comment
Azande
If you made Sukhoi an RD, you'd basically lose any ability to have their side business exist. So I'd advise against that. Most of your characters, including the Suhk, show a disregard for regulations and the like, but you also play them damn well. I'm neutral ont his as a result. Link to comment
Arrow768
Do you name all your chars after Russian Avionics Engineers / Leaders of Russian Experimental Design Bureaus ? Sukhoi = Company that produces (amongst others) the Russian Su Aircraft (OKB-51) Mikulin = Well known engine designer (OKB-24) Viktor Lavochkin = OKB-301 Ilya Mikoyan = OKB-155 Kimi Myasishchev = OKB-23 / OKB-482 Nikita Yakovlev = OKB-47 I do not like the idea of naming crew members after persons that have made significant contributions in the same field. I might be able to overlook that if it was a janitor, but not if they are a scientist or a engineer. It is like creating a engineer Char who´s named after Prosche Or a Head of Security who is named after Rommel In addition Sukhoi is well known for being a troublemaker. I do not see how NT would allow a RD to work at the same time into his own pockets. (If you were to make Sukhoi a RD) (I dont see how they allow that with a scientist either, but thats something for another discussion) A huge -1 until the names are changed and are not those of relevant persons in the same field and until you definitely say that you wont have a RD with his own little side-company +1 for your AI, but thats not the topic here. Yes, that's why I'm apping with a completely new character and not Sukhoi himself. Yes, it's Sukhoi's character trait to disregard some of regulations in lieu of performing research, but even then, those cases have been rare lately. But I don't recall any of my other characters disregarding regulations. Thank you for the feedback! Edited March 22, 2018 by Guest Link to comment
LanceLynxx
Do you name all your chars after Russian Avionics Engineers / Leaders of Russian Experimental Design Bureaus ? Sukhoi = Company that produces (amongst others) the Russian Su Aircraft (OKB-51) Mikulin = Well known engine designer (OKB-24) Viktor Lavochkin = OKB-301 Ilya Mikoyan = OKB-155 Kimi Myasishchev = OKB-23 / OKB-482 Nikita Yakovlev = OKB-47 Haha, well, someone noticed. Didn't think that'd happen. It's actually a little something I made just for myself as a personal and easy naming scheme just for fun/homage that I wouldn't think anyone would even associate to be honest, because I love aerospace engineering and soviet aviation, and am myself a pilot IRL. They aren't meant to be actually "related" to the IRL people, could be just a coincidence (I mean how many Vladmirovichs, Ivanovs, and Popovs do you think exist). I do not like the idea of naming crew members after persons that have made significant contributions in the same field.I might be able to overlook that if it was a janitor, but not if they are a scientist or a engineer. It is like creating a engineer Char who´s named after Prosche Or a Head of Security who is named after Rommel Well the only character that works in the field that has the surname related to it is.. Natascha. Maybe The engineering apprentice. The other characters work in departments not relevant to their surnames. But that can be changed for the other characters if it's an issue. I can absolutely retcon this since they are rarely played and probably would go unnoticed. In addition Sukhoi is well known for being a troublemaker. Yes, but notably not with malicious intent, mostly just making use of unorthodox methods to further science, and sometimes disregarding the red tape if it starts becoming really an obstruction for research. And I mean, he is competent. So productivity is not jeopardized. This is an intentional character trait. If this is a problem I could tone it down. but insofar it never caused any major troubles for anyone AFAIK. . It has never caused major security problems, mostly just administrative. I do not see how NT would allow a RD to work at the same time into his own pockets. (If you were to make Sukhoi a RD)(I dont see how they allow that with a scientist either, but thats something for another discussion) Well the SUKH SYSTEMS thing is more of just a "personal brand", not even a company really, just something to throw "patents" and "IP" into. I don't sell any devices as a scientist, and I only ran the little Vacant Office as a "business" few times when 1) All science slots were taken and I joined in as Visitor and 2) Got HoP/Captain approval and ID naming change from "Visitor" to "Sukh Systems Rep". In a few cases I was allowed to produce and distribute circuitry items in the Vacant Office but not charge. Others, I could charge but had to split with the HoP. And no, this app is not for Sukhoi, hence, a new character was made. (Speaking of which, app surname changed.) A huge -1 until the names are changed and are not those of relevant persons in the same field and until you definitely say that you wont have a RD with his own little side-company I could always change the last names no problem, except for Sukhoi for being an already established character. The other ones are played not as often, so the surname change wouldn't even be noticed by most crew. So that's something I can fix and retconn before new playthroughs. (with a little admin help) As for Sukhoi not being an RD, like I said, it's not something I plan to do in the medium or short term. And since I would have a proper RD character, it would also "cannibalize" it, so it wouldn't make sense. And like I said, It's mostly a "personal brand trademark", there is no "side-company" that I profit off of, so that is a non-issue. I mean. If naming schemes are the biggest issue, I'm happy, because to me that's something that can be easily fixed and, to be honest, something that wouldn't make a big difference for me in the bigger picture. So I'm a bit glad I guess. +1 for your AI, but thats not the topic here. And thanks for the AI comment. I find it relevant though, since this is a whitelist app, not just an overview of one character, Natascha Sukhoi (who isn't even in the app). So everything counts. Thanks for taking the time to write an elaborate feedback. I appreciate it. EDIT: formatting Link to comment
Arrow768
Well, I have thought a bit about this. I only really noticed it when I saw all these names next to eachother. Regarding that: Well the SUKH SYSTEMS thing is more of just a "personal brand", not even a company really, just something to throw "patents" and "IP" into. If you work for a company then generally all the ideas and concepts you produce are owned by that company. Even if you work on something in your freetime it would be very difficult to not get into legal trouble as the company can always argue that you have used knowledge gained from your work to produce these patents (Especially if you work in the same field at the company). Therefore I find it somewhat questionable if SUKH is anything more than just a naming convention of the devices produced. (Or don't you think that NT would sue you into the ground to claim these "patents and "intellectual properties" for themselves, especially when you were employed with them when you made them) I generally do not conciser the AI (or borgs) synthetic for command applications as they do not show how a player works as part of the crew. However, I am somewhat interested in seeing how your RD is going to turn out. So I am cautiously looking forward to it. Link to comment
Resilynn
I spent a tiny bit of time around Sukhoi recently to get a feel for the character, and, I think Lance really has a grasp on RP. The character is played exceptionally well. I have no doubts about Lance's ability to play a measured command character, within rules and regulations. I give an enthusiastic +1. Link to comment

I'm just having a hard time with the wording, that's why I put it between "quotation marks". Obviously all the research done is property of NT, since I'm making the devices with their equipment, while on the job for them. I meant that it's more of a "maker's mark" thing, you know like when factory builders sometimes add their name in to chassi of cars and whatnot, but in this case blatantly with naming conventions, yes. So yes, although Natascha may have "discovered/invented" the device, it's still NT property hardware. IP would be a little more complicated, I never thought about it this deep, but would contract include any IP/patents to be automatically property of NT as well? I just had a hard time explaining, closes I could get to condensing the idea was "trade mark" but that's still not exactly it. More like a maker's mark, yeah. I never thought too in depth about this tbh Link to comment

For most research and development companies or jobs, as soon as you sign a contract - any and all things you create will essentially be the property of the company you work for. NanoTrasen more specifically probably has non-competition agreements along with their non-disclosure agreements, meaning even if they did not take the rights to the design you created - you would not be able to actively utilize it in market. Anything you created before hiring is safe. Link to comment
Jakers457
What I care about is what a head can add to a department, I've seen a good hand full of heads who are about as vapid as their department pet, especially when it comes to Research. I want to know what you would do to enhance Research's experience, to allow for more Science RP. Will you give projects? Encourage projects? Will you help science players think outside the box? Anything you created before hiring is safe. For perspective the "SUKH Systems" thing was something I made in the moment, after the Integrated Circuits update without any actual in-depth planning, was just naming conventions for the devices I made, this wasn't ever supposed to be part of the character's lore at all (BUT CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT EH?), so I'd say it is only a product that I could license to NT? Or that NT licenses to me? Or it could also just be a product name and nothing more, many possibilities to deal with this particular singular thing. Well I could say that since there are no known products in lore or in game that compete for the same niche of the devices Sukhoi made, that competition agreements wouldn't exist in the first place, but I digress. I think that the focus has shifted and becoming a little off-topic from a Head app to a Character feedback... Sukhoi isn't even in the app itself besides a name on the character list Link to comment

Well I would certainly try my best to get everyone to have a good experience in science, get everyone involved in whatever requires, on slow shifts maybe give out a project or go lab-to-lab and offer help and/or/ advice or just RP really, or teach something not well known and such. Maybe hold workshops for circuitry, I've done that a few times. I would definetively encourage others to pursue their own projects, I would also try to GIVE projects as well, but that's a bit more tricky since I would have to think of things worth studying. But I would love to, yes. Especially if it involved cross-departmental things, which is usually the case with Medical and Chemistry, sometimes Engineering. And the more outside-the-box, the better, as long as there is a REASON for it. If it works, it works. Bonus points if the method is interesting. Link to comment
